As outdoor activities pick up this season, Wisconsin residents are encouraged to stay alert for signs of feral hogs. Jeff Morris, University Extension Swine Specialist, emphasizes the importance of being aware of this invasive species while enjoying the outdoors, whether making firewood or preparing for hunting. Although feral hogs are not a common concern in Wisconsin, Morris points out that certain areas, particularly in the northern counties, may require attention. While Wisconsin has largely avoided significant issues with feral hogs, Morris warns that these animals pose a real threat, especially in southern states like Texas and Oklahoma. Known for causing extensive damage to crops, land, and property, feral hogs also spread diseases between farms. Morris urges residents to watch for signs of damage, including torn-up soil and destroyed fencing, and to be mindful of any standing corn that may be knocked down. The feral hog population in the U.S. continues to grow, with an estimated six million hogs causing $2.5 billion in annual damage.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief takes a ride with his friend Ryan Mareno, Founder and Owner of Mareno's Outfitters and Guide Service. Ryan and Big Chief talk about Ryan's guide service that offers unique hunting experiences for both American Alligators and Feral Hogs in Southwest Louisiana. They also chat about Ryan's love of wheated bourbon. This episode is an opportunity for listeners to win one of two giveaways, so make sure to listen to the end. These two outdoorsmen start the show by sipping on some Green River Distillery wheated bourbon. Its soft notes of honeysuckle and caramel make it delicious. They then move on to Castle and Key Distillery wheated bourbon. With a little more proof, it's got that sweetness the big man loves. To start the second half, the duo crack open a bottle of Fox Trail Distillery O'Highlands XIV, which is a 14-year-old straight bourbon whiskey. Man, what a whiskey! Too bad this was a limited release. They finish the show with a TX Whiskey Port Barrel Finish. It makes Ryan think of raisins and toffee. This ride on The Whiskey Trip shows just how fast the Big Man can grow his Village in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. Welcome to the family, Ryan, O'Neill, Matt, and Taddy. Cheers!

In Texas, feral hogs have become a significant ecological and agricultural problem. These invasive, non-native animals, also known as razorbacks or river rooters, have spread across the state, with their presence documented in 252 out of 254 counties. Mikayla Killam, an expert on the subject, provides insight into the history, behavior, and impact of these animals on the landscape. The Origin and Spread of Feral Hogs Feral hogs in Texas have a diverse ancestry, originating from both domestic pigs introduced by Spanish explorers and Eurasian wild boars brought over in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The introduction of these animals was driven by the desire to enhance hunting opportunities with a challenging and resilient species. Over time, these animals have interbred, creating a hybrid that is exceptionally adaptable and prolific. Ecological and Agricultural Damage Feral hogs are highly destructive due to their omnivorous diet and rooting behavior. They damage crops, compete with livestock for resources, and pose a threat to native wildlife by consuming plants and animals meant for native species. Their rooting, especially around water sources, disrupts ecosystems, damages watersheds, and accelerates soil erosion. This behavior has significant implications for agricultural productivity and natural resource conservation. Health Risks and Human Impact These animals are not only an ecological and agricultural nuisance but also a public health concern. Feral hogs can carry diseases transmissible to livestock, wildlife, pets, and humans. One such disease, swine brucellosis, poses serious health risks, necessitating precautions when handling or consuming feral hog meat. Conservation and Management Efforts Addressing the feral hog problem requires concerted management efforts. Mikayla Killam emphasizes the importance of education and proactive measures. Resources and detailed guides on managing feral hog populations, including building traps and snares, are available on the dedicated website, feralhogs.tamago.edu. This platform consolidates valuable information and offers direct access to experts for those seeking assistance. The Call to Action The proliferation of feral hogs underscores the need for a robust and coordinated conservation strategy. By understanding their impact and implementing effective management practices, we can mitigate the damage they cause and protect Texas's agricultural and natural landscapes. Mikayla Killam's insights and resources are invaluable in this ongoing battle, highlighting the critical role of community awareness and involvement in addressing this pressing issue.

Wild pigs have been an issue in Canada over the last 25 years, but a simple looking trap may be part of the solution to the problem. Called the "Pig Brig", it's big net that is 20-feet in diameter, which can be set up by one person in about an hour. To catch them, a pig simply walks underneath the mesh and once they're in, there is no way out. It's also portable so it can fit into a backpack.Aaron Sumrall is the Director of Outreach, Education, and Research at Pig Brig, the U.S. company that makes the traps of the same name. Aaron will talk about what inspired the creation of Pig Brig and the potential to use it to control other pests. A researcher with the Western College of Veterinary Medicine says the use of AI to assess animal welfare offers an opportunity to eliminate human error and bias during assessments. Dr. Martyna Lagoda says measuring welfare of animals is a complex task but there are animal-based indicators of welfare which are visible on the animal's carcass throughout the pig's life and these are used as the scoring targets of an automated system. She says the indicators tell a story of welfare retrospectively and can be tracked back to different stages of the production chain.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chester Moore talks about his recent and ongoing investigations into giant feral hogs, red wolves and more.
For farmers in the South, feral hogs are a constant threat to their crops and, thus, their livelihoods. But with the expiration of a federal pilot program to eradicate them, the feral hog invasion has become another skirmish in the broad fiscal battles dominating Washington. One problem: there's not an agreement on what role the federal government should play in solving the invasive hog problem. And that disagreement could have serious impacts as Congress gears up to debate several major agricultural funding bills in the coming months. On this episode of our weekly podcast, On The Merits, Bloomberg Government reporter Jack Fitzpatrick explains why invasive feral hogs are such a difficult problem to solve, and outlines the pros and cons of the dueling solutions to eradicate the boars: a government-led campaign or a market-oriented solution. Do you have feedback on this episode of On The Merits? Give us a call and leave a voicemail at 703-341-3690.
The recently expired 2018 Farm Bill not only funded protection for farmers from damage caused by storms and lower commodity futures, but also from feral hogs. The bill authorized $75 million for eradication and control of feral hogs, with USDA funding projects in 18 states.
Have you heard the horror stories involving these rampant nuisance animals found in nearly every state, Feral Hogs?
Glen Gentry joins Tommy to talk about feral hogs in Louisiana and what researchers are coming up with to help with the population.

For decades feral hogs have been expanding their range, creating ecological havoc wherever they show up. Efforts to reduce or eradicate them from the landscape have been largely unsuccessful. However, there is one state that seems to be having some success in the war against feral hogs — Missouri. In this episode, we're talking with Alan Leary, the Wildlife Management Coordinator for the Missouri Department of Conservation who heads the state's efforts to eradicate feral hogs. Alan discusses where feral hogs came from, how they've spread, and what he's found that works and doesn't work to reduce feral hog numbers. Iguanas didn't always fall out of trees during cold snaps in the Sunshine State, but chances are, future generations will regard them as just a natural part of the landscape. With the world changing around us at a rapidly increasing rate, how do we set conservation goals when we can't keep track of what we've lost? This episode was produced by Anisa Khalifa and mastered by Charlie Shelton-Ormond. Our thanks to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh.
The exotic pet industry is one of the main pathways for introducing invasive species into new environments. It can be hard for non-herpers to understand what's so attractive about living with these creatures. In this first of a series of bite-sized episodes, reptile enthusiast Tim Jackowicz takes us into his world, where giant snakes and lizards offer an opportunity to rethink how we approach the world around us. This episode was produced and mastered by Charlie Shelton-Ormond. Our thanks to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh.
As if our native mosquitoes weren't pesky enough, we humans have imported some of the most invasive mosquito species to the U.S., bringing with them painful and debilitating diseases. Is there a human solution to this human-caused problem? Or are we destined to see history repeat itself, as we try (again and again) to outwit the deadliest animal on the planet? This episode was produced by Anisa Khalifa and Charlie Shelton-Ormond. Matt Horton and Sean Roux mastered the audio. Our thanks to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh.
