A newly launched initiative aimed at advancing Canada's position as a leader in cereal grain innovation has been given a considerable funding boost from four Canadian grain grower organizations. The Global Agriculture Technology Exchange (Gate) Capital Campaign, led by Cereals Canada, has secured $13.4 million from Alberta Grains, Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission (Sask Wheat), Manitoba Crop Alliance, and Grain Farmers of Ontario. That brings its total funding commitment to just over $18 million, with a project fundraising goal of $102 million. The GATE initiative is a visionary project looking to establish a cutting-edge facility in Winnipeg that will serve as a hub for agricultural innovation providing farmers with the tools, resources, and technical support they need to be competitive globally and remain leaders in agricultural exports. Greg Sears, farmer and Alberta Grains Region 6 Director, said the organization's ongoing commitment to advancing ag-tech and innovation aligns perfectly with the Gate initiative and expects there will be tangible results for farmers. “Producers need to understand this is a multi-generational investment ensuring Canada's profile as producers of high-quality, sustainably produced wheat and barley remains intact for our customers,” he said. “That sets all of us up as producers for many years to come.” For more on this story go to ruralrootscanada.com

On today's episode Aidan is joined by Portage-Lisgar Conservative nomination candidate, Branden Leslie. Listen to why Branden is running, some of his policies, and why he is the best choice to run. Check out his website here https://www.votebranden.ca/ Recorded on 02/05/2023 Branden has earned a reputation for getting things done. He has a proven track record of fighting for Conservative principles and values on Parliament Hill while working in the Harper government and in the private sector. He's running to give you back control of your life, ensure you can raise your family according to your values, and to get the Liberals out of your pocket. He has advised Cabinet Ministers and Members of Parliament on important issues like protecting the rights of law-abiding gun owners and keeping our streets safe and criminals behind bars. Branden was instrumental in passing legislation and working with Members of Parliament to get key planks of the Harper government's agenda implemented such as the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act, amongst many others. Branden went on to work as the manager of policy and government relations at the Grain Growers of Canada. In this role, he engages with farmers, Parliamentarians, Ministers, and public servants on agricultural issues such as trade, transportation, innovation, and business risk management programs, to protect the viability of the family farm. He has been a leading voice pushing back against the Liberal government's plan to reduce fertilizer use and is the architect of legislation currently before Parliament to exempt farmers from the carbon tax. He also played a pivotal role in passing Bill C-208, which eliminated the unfair tax rates faced by farmers and small business owners selling their operations to their children and grandchildren. Branden takes pride in working with farmers and Members of Parliament to defend Canada's agricultural sector and will continue to do so if elected. Active in the Conservative Party for over a decade, Branden was the Campaign Manager for the Hon. Candice Bergen in the 2019 election, helping her receive almost 70% of the vote. Branden is a farm kid. He was born in Portage la Prairie and raised on a farm south of town. His parents Jim and Shauna-Lei Leslie are active members in the community and continue to farm to this day. He attended Portage Collegiate Institute and went on to Brandon University and Carleton University to receive his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Between reffing hockey for over 15 years and continuing to play recreationally, to being an active golfer, Branden has held a lifelong interest in sports and has had the opportunity to compete in almost every community in Portage-Lisgar. Branden and his fiancé Cailey are excited for this Conservative nomination campaign and will fight for you with the passion and energy that you deserve. With your help, we can send the right Conservative to Ottawa to take on Justin Trudeau and deliver real change.

Today we speak to Tristan Baldock, a fourth-generation farmer from Buckleboo on upper Eyre Peninsula. Tristan speaks about his journey from university graduate to agronomist and now farmer owner of Karinya Ag. Working as an agronomist ‘out of his patch' exposed Tristan to a broad variety of agricultural practices on the Eyre Peninsula, which he sees as an invaluable time in his career, especially when it came time to return home. At first returning to the farm with his wife as employees, then later becoming a part of the business, has allowed Tristan to grow into the role of decision maker, working with his parents as well as working closely with their private consultant and agronomist.Tristan gives us insights into hosting trials on his property with researchers, how he became involved with the industry group Grain Growers, as well as his advice to emerging young people in agriculture. Grain growers around Australia have a new tool, in the form of a comprehensive guide, to support informed decision making around machinery purchases. The guide, titled “Machinery investment and replacement for Australian grain growers”, is the result of a two-year GRDC initiated project to assist growers to evaluate decisions around machinery investment. The information has been gathered from contributions from more than 450 grain growers around Australia, who shared their machinery purchase and ownership experiences, resulting in 30 case studies that are featured in the guide. The guide offers a valuable snapshot of machinery ownership levels to help growers compare their position against industry averages for similar farming operations. Mining companies and farmers are frequently adversaries, with very different plans for the natural resources in a region. However, through the formation of a co-op, Eyre Peninsula Co-operative Bulk Handling (EPCBH), the relationship between local grain growers and mining company Iron Road is characterised by co-operation, open communication and a genuine desire to create mutually beneficial outcomes. Agricultural journalist Michael Cavanagh talks to Tim Scholz, who is a farmer in the region, as well as director and chief executive officer of EPCBH and principal of stakeholder engagement with mining company Iron Road. In this podcast you will learn: how local grain growers and a mining company are working together to find a win-win situation, how the planned deep-water port at Cape Hardy could allow for grain and magnetite exports, and possibly even more, why co-ops give small farmers a voice and can empower them to collectively address sustainability challenges impacting their businesses and the wider community. The federal government tabled its new emissions reduction plan as required under the net-zero emissions law passed last year. It projects the oil and gas industry will need to cut greenhouse emissions by 42 per cent by the end of the decade from current levels. Agriculture accounts for about 10 per cent of that total and the challenge will be to reduce that to net zero by the year 2050. Branden Leslie with the Grain Growers of Canada says his organization will be working with the federal government to meet those targets without impacting producer profitability and he will share the path forward focusing on innovation, research, and beneficial management practices. Crop Development Centre director Dr. Curtis Pozniak will tell us how this atlas will enable scientists and breeders to much more quickly identify genes that will improve yield, pest resistance and other important crop traits. Grain Growers of Canada have released a new video project to help educate politicians and policymakers about the challenges and realities facing farmers today. Today's Modern Grain Farm: A Harvest Across Canada features farmers from across Canada including Saskatchewan grain farmer, Cherilyn Jolly-Nagel. Cherilyn will explain why its crucial to reach out to politicians and their teams and present what life is like as a modern grain farmer across the country. She says the when the question is asked How can the Canadian economy recover from the Coronavirus? The answer might be in a strong agriculture industry and there are a number of ways Ottawa can be supportive of farmers. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hagley in northern Tasmania is the site of an extensive trial dedicated to helping the state's grain growers to achieve higher yields of quality feed grain. It's also the location of an annual field day that showcases its research into new cereal lines and agronomy strategies to lift feed grain productivity. On this podcast Tasmanian grower and Southern Panel member Michael Chilvers discusses the major constraints to cereal production in high rainfall areas, and how he is using the latest germplasm research and fungicide management strategies to help achieve the potential yield for his region. The trial and field day are part of the GRDC's Hyper Yielding Cereals Project, that aims to increase average red feed wheat yields in Tasmania from 4.4 t/ha to 7t/ha by 2020 and have 10% of commercial Tasmanian feed wheat crops yielding 14t/ha by 2020. With Jeff Nielson, Persident of the Grain Growers of Canada.
Canadian grain farmers typically battle a range of difficulties from weather related events to escalating input and equipment cost to fluctuations of returns. While the 2013 crop was generally one of the largest on record, concerns are now mounting because of the inability of railways to move grain to customers fast enough. Federal and provincial politicians have been pointing accusatory fingers at Canada's railways and suggesting the companies — CN and CP — have not done everything they can to meet the demand for rail cars. The speaker will address these issues and the long term opportunities & challenges for Canadian grain producers. He will also outline the role of the Grain Growers of Canada in marketing the crop and who the main grain exporters in Canada are now that the Canadian Wheat Board's marketing monopoly has ended. Where are the main export markets for Canadian grain? Are farmers benefitting from more competition among grain handling companies? What are some of the options Provincial and Federal Governments can use in assisting farmers generally, but more particularly, in marketing their grain? Speaker: Gary Stanford Gary Stanford is the President of Grain Growers of Canada. He is the also the Director Representative for the Alberta Wheat Commission and has enjoyed participating in agriculture policy development through farm associations since 1996. Gary is just back from the Global Grain Asia conference in Singapore where he presented the Canadian grain market outlook to delegates from numerous countries. Gary is a proponent of sustainability practices related to soil stewardship which are helpful on his farm, since he lives in the dry and windy climate of southern Alberta. Many of these sustainability practices have been followed traditionally on Gary's farm since the time of his grandfather who in 1903 was the first farmer to grow winter wheat in Alberta. Since the 9/11 attack on the United States and the so called War on Terror, Afghanistan has been in our newspapers almost daily. For over five years, Canada's largest commitment overseas has been in Afghanistan – not just militarily, but also on the foreign aid front. In fact, Afghanistan is the single largest recipient of Canadian bilateral aid with over $600 million allocated from 2001 to 2009. Despite our 3-D approach to foreign affairs – Diplomacy, Defence and Development – the public knows little about Canada's development assistance to Afghanistan and how well it is working. Last month, Ted Menzies, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Cooperation accompanied the minister to Kabul and Kandahar to assess progress. So how well is our development assistance working in Afghanistan? Is it helping to win hearts and minds? Are we achieving our objectives? Speaker: Ted Menzies, MP Ted Menzies is the Member of Parliament for Macleod. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 2004 and served as the opposition critic for both international cooperation and international trade. Upon reelection in 2006, Mr. Menzies was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Cooperation, and in January 2007, was given the additional responsibility of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade. Mr. Menzies came to Parliament with a strong background in agriculture and international trade. He has worked with the Grain Growers of Canada, Western Canadian Wheat Growers, the Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance and the federal Agriculture, Food and Beverage Sectoral Advisory Group on International Trade. Ted Menzies was born in Claresholm where, before being elected to Parliament, he and his wife operated a 5,000 acre farm. Moderator: Trevor Page Mr. Page is a retired United Nations Director
