Clarissa shares this: As a small child, I had two interests: I wanted to be an artist, and I wanted to take care of people. I had an active imagination. I loved painting, drawing, and sharing my work with others. It brought such joy and bliss. I grew up in a household of doctors who were very practical and protective. I did not get the encouragement to dive deep into art and was told that I'd be rich and famous after I died! I remember feeling like I wasn't capable of making “right” decisions. As an adult I know my parents were looking out for my best interest. Life as an artist just didn't seem stable or practical. I also was drawn to becoming friends with children who were on the outskirts and alone. As one of the few Filipino children at my pre-school, I felt different. My dark hair and skin was a contrast to the other children around me. I didn't want others to feel like I did. I would always befriend the new kids in town. I didn't want them to feel left out. I remember walking up to a new girl in my ballet class from Canada and invited her to join me and my group of friends. Reaching out was something I always did. I became the “go to” friend who would listen, reassure, encourage, and just be with whatever situation was going on. I found I had a knack for making people feel welcomed. Clarissa is a total GEM. For much of his early life, Jay Shifman was told that he was living with a debilitating issue of Mental Health. As his condition worsened, he was prescribed more drugs at ever higher doses until, in his early 20s, he was daily taking more than the estimated lethal dosage of one drug and misusing many others while living with a full-blown issue of Substance Misuse thanks to prescription pills. "At 23, after two suicide attempts, an overdose, and time spent in an inpatient hospital and a rehab facility, I decided enough was enough and pledged myself to withdraw from all of my prescriptions. Over the next few years, many of my symptoms completely disappeared." After entering recovery, and rebuilding my life, I pledged myself to one mission: regaining the choice over my struggles. In a world where many don't get a first chance, I realized just how lucky I was to get my second. I decided to dedicate my life to making a difference around the topics of Mental Health and Substance Misuse & Recovery. Considering a Life Shift? Career Change? Today I talk about Questions to Ask Yourself and Questions to Deal With When we leave school, college, or university, often we have no idea what we really want. We choose a job or career based on what our parents, friends, or career advisors say, suggest or expect. We do the things that we “should” do because our parents have done it or our peers are doing it. Sometimes we go with “it's just what you are supposed to do”. Down the road, years on, (sometimes 20+ years later) we find ourselves in a mediocre situation, with a growing sense of disappointment and dissatisfaction about our situation, our work and our place in it. What do we do about it? Do we listen? Do we lean in and explore our options? What Do You Want? If you want to change direction, at any age, the most important thing is to discover is what you really want out of life. ● What interests you? ● What fascinates you? ● What do you feel passionate about? You will ask yourself these questions over and over: If I change careers, will it make me enough money? What will others think? What am I willing to give up to create something really incredible? Will I be good enough to make it work? The answers may not come overnight, but as long as you pursue what interests you, fascinates you, and makes you happy, you will find the answers that you seek. Beware of any criticism of your dreams and ideas from anyone you wouldn't go to for sound advice. Remember, someone telling you that you shouldn't is often their admission that they couldn't. Be relentless in your pursuit of happiness and fulfilment. Go at it like your whole life depends on it. Because it does. NEED HELP SETTING YOUR GOALS OR PLANNING YOUR SHIFT?
