Dr. Kari Anderson has positioned herself as a respected clinician and leader in the field of eating disorders. Her career spans over three decades of leading treatment teams in all levels of care, Kari has developed several treatment models, most recently for the treatment of binge eating. Kari earned her Doctor of Behavioral Health with her research project, The Mindful Eating Cycle: Treatment for Binge Eating Disorder, at Arizona State University in 2012. Co-creator of the Am I Hungry?® Mindful Eating for Binge Eating Program, Kari also co-authored the acclaimed book Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat for Binge Eating: A Mindful Eating Program for Healing Your Relationship with Food and Your Body. Her memoir, Food, Body, and Love: but the Greatest of These Love, was released in 2021. This work digs deeper into the science behind effective treatment and includes research on food addiction and issues faced in obesity medicine. She is an adjunct faculty for the University of New Hampshire, and trains graduate students in treatment methods for eating disorders. As a licensed therapist in three states and certified eating disorder specialist and supervisor (CEDS-S), Kari maintains a private practice in Scottsdale, Arizona. On this week's episode I am super excited to be reintroducing one of our lovely guests that we have had on the podcast again Dietitian and Founder of Love What You Eat, Zoe Nicholson. Zoe has been working as a Dietitian in private practice for almost 20 years now working from Melbourne Victoria. Over the 20 years Zoe has been privately practicing she's conducted nutrition seminars and workshops for various workplaces or corporations, created ongoing content and written her own Dietetic blogs. Zoe Founded the organisation Love What you eat in 2004 where before COVID- 19 had 5 practices across Melbourne including in Malvern, North Melbourne, East Melbourne, Coburg and Kew). Zoe also started what's called the Moderation Movement back in 2014 with Counsellor Jodie Arnot which has now gathered nearly 40 thousand followers on Facebook. The Moderation Movement has been such a great movement for people really being able to help people explore their relationships with food and body through interactive workshops and events. Zoe works from a size inclusive and non- dieting approach to health that helps people heal their preoccupation with food or movement so that they can live a life that happily incorporates the best parts of it.  On this week's episode we will be speaking about the reasons as to why all foods have value from a dietetic perspective. Where Zoe will explore how people can become so preoccupied with Diet Culture and really miss out on the best parts of enjoying food. Frustrated at not being consistent with your diet plan? Are you still in that hamster wheel cycle of losing now and gaining weight later? Does it seem like an endless struggle for you? That's probably because the more you're attached to something, the more you get disappointed every time you fail. In this episode, Tina, an HPWL graduate, shares her experience of being so obsessed with her body weight issues that things magnify her struggles. She ends up frustrated, even with how hard she tried losing weight. But when she found out about Hypnosis, that's when things started transforming. For her, this is what freedom looks like -- choosing what is good for you because that is how your body feels about it. It's not about how bad or good the food is. It's making a decision based on what you want and what your body feels it wants and needs. It's about confidence in knowing you are better, even with or without it. "Just stop the craziness. It's so freeing and accessible to people that if you want to make the change, you can, and you just have to believe in the process, believe in the program, and find the means to do it. Babies are born with a natural, instinctive relationship with food. They eat when they are hungry, stop when they are full and don’t think about food until they are hungry again. Food is not a focus, it is simply fuel for their bodies.As we grow, we are inundated with tv, magazines, social media, etc., showing us the wonderful foods we could be eating and in the next moment, giving us unrealistic ideas of what we should look like and what we should or shouldn’t eat to achieve that. We worry about what we are eating, calories, exchanges, grams or points. We are using so much energy and time to attain an idealized version of what it means to eat healthy that we don’t have space left to enjoy life, which is the ultimate goal.Today I interview Dr. Michelle May. Michelle is a former family physician, recovered yo-yo dieter, and founder of the program, “Am I Hungry? Mindful Eating Programs and Training”. found at www.AmIHungry.com. She is the author of the Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat book series that teaches mindful eating to help individuals resolve mindless and emotional eating and senseless yo-yo dieting to live the vibrant lives they crave. You can download the first chapter at https://amihungry.com/chapter1. Mindful eating takes you back to the natural instinctive state you were born with, but it is not a one and done. It is a tool to use every day. Your understanding evolves as you use it.-Unconsciously incompetent: You didn’t know better-Consciously incompetent: You knew there was a lot you didn’t know but didn’t know what to do about it.As skills and tools are taught, you become: Consciously Competent: You can use the tools such as the hunger and fullness scale to help you decide whether you are hungry or not. You can then make conscious decisions according to where you fall on that scale. If you realize that you are not actually hungry, but you want to eat anyway, it is time to figure out what you really need and what else besides eating could meet that need. Eventually it becomes natural and instinctive like it was when you were a baby. Unconsciously Competent: You don’t have to think “Am I hungry?” You just know. Not everybody gets there. As you continue to practice you go back to your instinctive, natural relationship with food and only occasionally revert. When that happens, it is a signal that something is wrong, such as you need rest or have too much stress. You can go back to basics and take better care of yourself. - Weight is not a behavior. It is not subject to behavior modification. Mindfulness is not about weight or a number on a scale. It is about awareness and purpose. It is intention and attention. By bringing awareness to what you really want, and the choices you are making, you can make little choices every day that bring you closer to feeling more energetic, joyful and having a more balanced, vibrant life. If you were doing those things only to lose weight and you weren’t seeing a change on the scale you might quit. When you stop using the scale to see how you are progressing, you can tune in to how you are feeling. That’s what really matters. Hunger and fullness scale: On a scale of 1 to 10, rate your level of hunger and fullness. One is so famished you could eat a chair, 10 is so full you could pop. Five is neutral, not hungry and not full.This is a non-diet approach to help you recognize whether you are actually hungry and if so decide how hungry you are. This knowledge allows you to make your own decisions about what, when and how much to eat. When you feel like eating, pause and check in. What is your number? If it is less than 5, you get to make the decision about whether you are hungry enough for a snack or a full meal. If your number is a 5 or above it means the desire to eat came from somewhere else. Seeing food, seeing someone else eating it or feeling deprived of a certain food are big triggers for eating. It could also be an emotional trigger. If you recognize that you want to eat but aren’t hungry, you have a chance to figure out what you can do to take care of yourself. Two-bucket concept: One way to visualize mindful eating is to picture your body with 2 buckets. One holds all the food you give it throughout the day. The other bucket holds everything else you need, such as rest, fun, pleasure, comfort, companionship, connection and organization. When we think we are hungry we fill the first bucket. Many of those times we actually are hungry, and our body needed the fuel we gave it. But, other times, we are bored, upset, tired or emotional and we think we are hungry. So, we add to our food bucket, not realizing that we needed to add rest, or exercise or conversation rather than food. Our second bucket remains empty. We can end up the day with our food bucket overflowing and our other needs bucket very empty leaving us feeling full but unfulfilled. We are filling the wrong bucket. Michelle has stopped using the word health and uses well-being because we are entire beings. We need more than just nutrition and exercise. We also need emotional and spiritual nourishment. These are things that can’t be addressed by what we are eating. Mindful eating is a new way to think about food, a way to avoid deprivation and guilt. Diets are restrictive and unsustainable, leaving the dieter feeling guilty and disappointed. Michelle is on a mission to help people recognize and cope with their triggers for mindless and emotional overeating, to rediscover joy in physical activity, and learn how to effectively nourish our bodies, mind, heart, and spirit. I have diabetes, and need to make better choices. Lately I'm in a heavy food eating, which leads me to be sleepy and inactive. My diabetes dietitian focuses on counting carbs, and I haven't counted carbs in years. I've given up and given in to the cravings. I've gained weight, watched my blood pressure rise, and my eyes fill with sadness when I look in the mirror and wonder how much over X pounds is on my 5ft frame. I actually feel afraid for my heart and all the extra work it has to do now while my weight continues to rise. There have been times when I actually enjoyed drinking "green drinks," and having my brain and body feel healthy. Grilling out, experimenting with recipes, yoga, swimming, and such. I know my food choices today make my vision blurry, blood sugar high, and cause me to make not so good decisions because my brain isn't as clear when I "exercise and eat right. " I want a strong body again. I want to find joy in a walk or kayaking or fitting comfortable in a booth having brunch with friends. How do I get back to that? How do I get back to wanting the healthy choices, the joy in experimenting with fruits, vegetables, protein, and fats in recipes? Being a weight-inclusive, fat-positive, non-diet dietitian is NOT an approach that harms health. Gastric bypass does NOT rid the world of fatphobia! The answer to this problem is a combo solution: to help people heal their relationship with food AND with their bodies. Part of this means healing the cultural fatphobia our world is currently struggling with. Megrette Fletcher joins us to talk about medical nutrition therapy! Moving away from a job that doesn't support our passions and values is an amazing step. The culture surrounding diabetes is super saturated by diet culture, and so moving out of the diet-centric paradigm in diabetes work is hard! Before insulin was invented, restriction was the only way we knew how to manage the disease. We need to pause and think, why are we so afraid of nourishing the body? When we teach diabetes from a Health at Every Size perspective, we address every body as an individual. We're ALL marinating in diet culture, and people who struggle with diabetes exist in a diet-culture pressure cooker. We don't cause diabetes as it's a genetic disease, but so much of diet culture blames the individual and individual food and exercise choices. Compassion is KEY for diabetes care, as there really isn't a cure and it's not a disease anyone asks for. It's a genetic condition that's VERY complex. The goal needs to be to nourish the body, period. Where our weight ends up doesn't matter! No matter what your body size, you need to eat! One third of people who seek out weight loss treatment are actually struggling with binge eating disorder. Pursuing weight loss actually makes bingeing WORSE! Healing your relationship with food is messy, but it's a beautiful mess, and it's worth it. What exactly does "overweight" even mean?? I say over what! Weight gain around puberty is COMPLETELY normal! But unfortunately we often shame girls for this. When the world tells us small bodies are valued and larger bodies are unacceptable, it lays the groundwork for the binge eating experience. Getting help can be the first step to peeling away the shame associated with bingeing. What's the difference between a "healing" relationship with food vs a "healthy" one? A healing relationship with food helps us walk away from the perfectionism and the black and white thinking around food. Kari Anderson from Green Mountain at Fox Run joins to talk more about binge eating! Sometimes we use food to try to calm our anxiety... and that's okay! You don't need to feel ashamed about it. Be compassionate to yourself instead! Trusting yourself around food again is a huge step towards healing your relationship with food. Food can have a sense of freedom, rather than fear. It is SO important to validate the role and the function of food in our lives... look at it as a coping mechanism that DID serve you, until it didn't anymore. We may even have to grieve our previous relationship with food in order to move onto the next version. We live in a world where we demonize our food choices constantly!! Our culture doesn't help when someone is trying to heal their relationship with food. We have to jump off the diet train!! The restrictive mindset CREATES the weight "problem." We should never limit the choices in our lives because of our weight! You have a choice in your eating behaviors. So what if we took that judgment away? What if we treated eating just like peeing? They're both bodily functions that do just fine on their own without outward policing. So stop judging when you're hungry, or how much or how little you need to eat to feel satisfied! Eating is like peeing. Marci Evans joins to talk about her expert knowledge on food addiction research! Food doesn't need to have so much power!! You are NOT alone... your pain is individual, but your experiences with food are so common. What are the first steps to making peace with food when dealing with these problems?? Compassion! Challenging food addiction in and of itself The food addiction model is problematic and has many limitations! The term "food addiction" is very poorly defined in the research community. Most 0f the research has been done on animals, not humans, and the research that has been done on humans has had a LOT of mixed results. It fails to consider alternatives to the biological response to food that mimics drug use, such as pavlovian conditioning, the fact that food is meant to be rewarding, or the impact of restraint, restriction, or previous dieting on our pleasure reactions. Food is meant to be rewarding!! The pattern of restriction and restraint that then swings to bingeing can lead someone to think they're addicted to food... but that might not be the case! Bingeing is often a reaction to deprivation!! Current food addiction research does NOT account for restraint, restriction, or dieting history. Our natural biology REBELS against restraint!! So how do we move beyond the food addiction model? Remember you are not alone! Consider what "healthy" means to you, and make sure it's BALANCED and SATISFYING. Use resources to support your journey. Notice what's happening in your body instead of what's happening in your brain. Once we take the judgment away, we can really listen to what our body actually needs. Our body craves balance!! Can you not remember the last time you ate without being on some kind of diet? Do you feel anxious and preoccupied about your food choices? Do you feel like you use food to escape your life, and avoid intense emotions? Are you consumed by feelings of loneliness, and find yourself trying to use food to fill that hole? We associate the word "skinny" with positive attributes, and the word "fat" with negative attributes, but these are FALSE TRUTHS fed to us via toxic diet culture. Erica Leon joins to talk about our cultural ideas around "skinny" and "fat," and diet culture overall. We often diet to feel in control, but inevitably it does the opposite and makes us feel out of control instead! This pain is so VALID, and our pain surrounding food and our bodies is so, so common. Perfection is not reality!! Using food to cope is an understandable reaction to trauma... but this means that we must tackle the emotional underbelly of our relationship with food. We must let go of dieting, begin to trust our inner wisdom, and understand that all foods fit! This process can cause a lot of uncomfortable emotions to arise, and so having additional mental health support is very important during this process. Dieting, disordered eating, and eating disorders have a function! They allow us to get through trauma, and we cannot discount how important these behaviors are in the context of our journeys. Therapy is such an important adjunctive piece of healing a client's relationship with food and their bodies, especially when working with a nutrition therapist who may not be able to support clients in that mental health capacity. Our relationship with food is about so much MORE than the food! Discomfort means you're GROWING!! Keep going... The first step of intuitive eating is to let go of the diet mentality. This can trigger the feeling of being out of control, and having the support of a dietitian in this phase can be super important! This is when we start to tune into our hunger and fullness, explore food in a new way, and observe everything with non-judgmental awareness. Feeling out of control with diets might be the first step away from diets... but this feeling does NOT last forever! Part of this process is rediscovering foods you may have not liked in the past, things you thought you loved that you don't like anymore, and just feeling it all out by asking yourself questions and reconnecting to your wisdom.
