It's fair to say this issue has been rumbling on a while. In the 1970s 70% of 4-11 year olds walked to school. Now less than half do. Three quarters of parents say 'side road zebras' would help them walk their kids to school more.In countries around the world white stripes, painted on the roads where side streets meet main roads, give pedestrians confidence, and drivers a reminder, that pavement users have the priority. However, in the UK any 'zebra crossing' as we call them, needs a flashing orange beacon and zig-zag lines at either side, to be legal on the roads. While 40 times cheaper to deliver, and tried and tested worldwide, 'side road zebras' without the lights or extra lines have been rattling around the pinball machine of British transport legislation for around eight years, so far without an outcome. While they exist in supermarket car parks without incident, the public roads are a different matter.Chris Boardman, England's walking and cycling commissioner, talks to Adam and Laura about the idea, which he's backed for some time, first working in Manchester as active travel commissioner, and now, in the national role. While he says caution in transport policy helps stop stupid things happening, he believes it is now the time to move forward. For context, we've had six transport ministers in the time it's taken to mull this issue.Adam and Laura also spoke to Westminster City Council's Cabinet Member for Streets, Max Sullivan. Max is overseeing trials of ten side road zebras in the heart of London, including outside the Houses of Parliament and the Department for Transport's HQ, which he says is a coincidence.A whopping 29% of pedestrians have been hit or nearly hit by a driver at a side road. Trials in Greater Manchester found drivers give way at side roads 30% more when there's a side road zebra. Additional polling found 76 per cent of parents of 4-11-year-olds would feel safer about their child walking to school (or allowing them to walk independently) if there were zebra crossings on side roads. We also visit the issue of pedestrianisation of Oxford Street by the mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, against Westminster City Council's wishes. For ad-free listening, behind-the-scenes and bonus content and to help support the podcast - head to (https://www.patreon.com/StreetsAheadPodcast). Are cars destined to fade away, or are they turning into something even more essential to our lives and identity, and can we balance our love for cars with the pressing need to reimagine transportation systems for health, climate, and cost-of-living challenges?Today, Richard Hammond, famous for his years of motor journalism on Top Gear and then the Grand Tour, and Active Travel England commissioner Chris Boardman are our guests, in interviews I recorded at a Rees Jeffreys Road Fund debate held at the Royal Automobile Club in London.Subscribe to Highways Voices free on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, Google Podcasts or Pocket Casts and never miss an episode!Richard Hammond discusses how we balance environmental concerns with the enduring human love for cars, and how we reimagine the car's future in an evolving transport network, balancing utility and emotional connection. He discusses what he sees are the limitations of electric vehicles and alternative energy solutions, and how he sees the future of car ownership in a world of shared mobility and environmental consciousness. Then Chris Boardman joins us to talk about how active travel options can address carbon emissions, public health, and equitable access to transport. He points to places like Cambridge and Kesgrave are leading the way in creating transport systems that prioritise people, not just vehicles. He looks at the economic and societal benefits of shifting to multi-modal transport systems, including improved health outcomes and reduced costs, before giving some practical solutions and innovative technologies, from rural design guides to data-driven cycling infrastructure, that enable transport independence and reduce reliance on cars.

This week Will and James are joined by bike design visionary Dimitris Katsanis. Dimitris worked alongside Chris Boardman in the Secret Squirrel Club, creating the pioneering bikes and kit that helped Team GB dominate the 2012 London Games. Ever wondered where the term 'marginal gains' came from? Yep, Dimitris and his colleagues, whose work at the time was so secret not even his boss, one Dave Brailsford, was allowed to know.Across a career spanning three decades and counting, Dimitris has had a hand in winning over 100 gold Olympic and World cycling medals, and right now his components and creations can be seen on four national teams' Olympic bikes (though he won't say which ones). Today he runs his own company, Metron A.E, which 3D-prints cutting edge parts for sport, aerospace and the medical industry. He also 3D-printed Fillipo Ganna's Hour record Pinarello Bolide F. The entire bike. This is a man who has a story about everyone from Wiggins to Ganna, and who can explain aerodynamic drag with just his hands. So pop the kettle on or jump on the turbo, and prepare to be enlightened. -----Cyclist is also a stunning monthly print magazine. 8th April 2024 The Spokesmen Cycling Podcast EPISODE 350: AA's Think Bike Redux SPONSOR: Tern Bicycles HOST: Carlton Reid GUESTS: Chris Boardman, Jeremy Vine, Edmund King LINKS: https://www.the-spokesmen.com/ https://www.ternbicycles.com https://twitter.com/CarltonReid TRANSCRIPT Carlton Reid 0:12 Welcome to Episode 350 of the Spokesmen cycling podcast. This show was engineered on Monday 8th April 2024. David Bernstein 0:28 The Spokesmen cycling roundtable podcast is brought to you by Tern bicycles. The good people at Tern are committed to building bikes that are useful enough to ride every day and dependable enough to carry the people you love. In other words, they make the kind of bikes that they want to ride. Tern has e-bikes for every type of rider. Carlton Reid 1:04 I'm Carlton Reid and on today's super short show we hear from Chris Boardman and Jeremy Vine, plugging that from today, the AA is relaunching its 10 year old 'Think Bike' campaign. This nudge-like promo encourages drivers to fit small Think Bike wing-mirror stickers to remind them to look out for those on two wheels. Back in 2014 the AA printed a million of these stickers and distributed them to members promoting the giveaway with a YouTube video featuring a good-looking naked cyclist appearing in wing mirrors demonstrating that if people chose to truly look before manoeuvring, there'll be fewer casualties out there. Did the campaign save any lives? Impossible to prove either way, of course. And some might argue that 10 years down the road the feral attitude towards cyclists in particular from some motorists is worse than ever. But that a motoring organisation is still going out of its way to promote a critical road safety message is something that's to be applauded. The concept for a wing-mirror sticker came from AA patrolman Tony Rich after his friend was killed in a motorcycle crash. The idea was then championed by AA president who's not only an arch motorist but also travels around London on a folding bike. Edmund cycles recreationally, too ... I know that because he often sends me photos of him riding his mountain bike wearing the ipayroadtax Lycra jersey that I sent him ages ago ... So before the sound bites from Chris Boardman and Jeremy Vine here's Edmund King ... Edmund King 3:01 It is now 10 years since we launched our Think Bike sticker campaign. But unfortunately, the message is still as relevant today as it was a decade ago; far too many people are being killed and seriously injured on two wheels, whether cyclists or motorcyclists. So we will be spreading the message again, to all drivers to think bikes. Chris Boardman 3:26 It's hard to believe the Think Bike sticker campaign launched 10 years ago, and I was there when that happened, the idea to make drivers just a little bit more aware of the vulnerable road users around them. Really glad to see that the AA is reinvigorating the campaign. And I'll be glad to join in and help. Jeremy Vine 3:43 And I'm so pleased to see that the AA is doing this because if you're on two wheels, you do feel quite vulnerable. And I always think when you're in a car, and I drive too, you don't always see that that person on the bicycle is a mum, a sister, somebody's son, someone's grandfather, maybe even their great grandfather. So thank you AA for thinking bike. David Bernstein 4:07 This podcast is brought to you by Tern bicycles. Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In today's episode, I have the absolute pleasure of talking to the immensely talented dancer, circus artist, aerialist and teacher Natalie Nicole James, Natalie shares her remarkable journey: from how at an early age she used dance to help her process the trauma of losing her mother, to her escape from domestic violence, and her ensuing fight for justice and a better life. We also discuss Natalie's experience of balancing the demands of career and motherhood, first as an emerging artist of just 18 and then again as an established performer of 35. Please join me as we look a life through a different lens. KEY TAKEAWAYS Natalie used dance as an emotional outlet after losing her mother at a young age, discovering it helped her process trauma. Escaping domestic violence, Natalie moved cities to protect herself and her young daughter, beginning the fight for justice. While pursuing her arts degree, Natalie simultaneously battled housing issues, a legal case, and raising her child alone. Natalie advocates for organisational learning to better support marginalized students with empathy. Returning to perform in her hometown years later, Natalie inspired the next generation, seeing her success. Natalie emphasises that healing takes time, learning to let go of resentment and focus inward is part of the healing process. Having a second child in a secure relationship makes Natalie feel positive but she still recognises that she is evolving in her identity. BEST MOMENTS "I just decided that my daughter's watching me. Like she's pretty close to my age. And so at times when I didn't see a certain value in my own self or life, I would look at her." "You are a woman of iron! You're a woman of, you're a woman of, Mental! You're breath taking courage, honestly." "To have come full circle, actually, you know, to come full circle and to come back and to kind of go, here I am in all my amazing power is so incredible." "I took, I basically, I pursued a case against the council whilst I pursued a case against my daughter's dad, whilst doing my degree, whilst raising my daughter, and I was knackered." "I remember one of my feedback was ‘shouldn't be able to get away with things just because she's talented' this was like one of the teachers. But I'm thinking, and my perception, so this is the perception that I had coming towards me from others." “People… buy a new football strip every six months because of the team they support," says motoring journalist Richard Hammond on this week's Highways Voices, "Or a new pair of trainers made on the other side of the world by somebody else's children out of fossil fuels-derived oil-derived materials and then shipped around the world where you'll use them for six months before putting them in landfill where they'll sit for 100 years."Speaking at a Rees Jeffreys Road Fund debate on the future of the car in society, the Grand Tour presenter gives a passionate defence of the private car on this week's podcast as he tells host Paul Hutton that the car will have to be with us, "because it's what it does for us, and what it's done, and what it continues to do is too important for it not to be. It's shaped our world. It won't go away, it will change, but it will be here."Subscribe to Highways Voices free on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, Google Podcasts or Pocket Casts and never miss an episode! The debate held at the RAC in London also featured Active Travel England Commissioner Chris Boardman, who agreed the car will have to continue to be a key part of the transport mix because it's so useful. "Its utility is the problem, because it is so useful and so effective, the Olympic Gold Medallist, “The question I asked before, what happens if we don't reduce car use? Every bit of data I've seen from both nationally and regionally [shows] we have to drive 30% less, and electrify, and shrink everything else. And that's the only way you're going to meet your carbon emissions targets. The only way to do that equitably and fairly is to give people an attractive choice and that's what I'm in the business of.”The Rees Jeffreys Road Fund exists to foster improvements in the engineering, management, design and use of roads to deliver safer, more environmentally sensitive, more aesthetically pleasing and more enjoyable outcomes. It does this by funding projects, research and events; and awarding bursaries to individuals pursuing relevant professional qualifications, and on the podcast you'll also hear from three of those indivuals. On top of that, we have news of a partnership between Highways News and the leading conference and exhibition Highways UK, news from our partners LCRIG, ADEPT, the Transport Technology Forum and ITS UK, and why VESOS Solutions win "Adrian's Accolade" this week.

After Donna Patterson's maternity leave, her employer Morrison's gave her a full-time role, despite her only working part time. She represented herself in a tribunal and she won a £60k pay-out for maternity discrimination. Donna joins Emma Barnett in the studio. As the clocks go back - and the nights draw in- it can get harder to find the motivation to get outdoors and exercise as the couch beckons. At the weekend the Olympic champion cyclist Chris Boardman wrote about this issue as he was aware that his wife and daughters were affected by this. Rather than putting the onus on women to keep safe he wants men to take more responsibility, he joins Emma alongside Robyn Vinter, the North of England correspondent of the Guardian, who is a runner and also wrote about this issue very recently. The words of Chris Boardman MBE, Interim Commissioner at Active Travel England and the main voice on this week's Highways Voices podcast, in conversation at last week's Transport Technology Forum conference in Liverpool, with Anthony Ferguson of the Department for Transport. In the fascinating chat, Mr Boardman talks about getting people out of their cars safely, and making it easy for people to walk and cycle. "Amsterdam's 408 miles from where we're sitting now - same climate," he says. "60% of kids get to school under their own steam, largely largely riding bikes... and they do that every day. And that's just normal 408 miles from here. That's just normal. And we asked the question, wouldn't you want that for your kids?" Hear how Mr Boardman plans to make it happen for kids, and adults across the country. You'll also hear news from our partners including an expanded ITS (UK) Awards, and why that's the winner of Adrian's Accolade this week, plus there's news from the Highways News website. ... well, actually Sepp Kuss didn't chase it down, but rather broke away on the final climb in the Pyrenees to become the first American to win a stage of the Tour since Tyler Farrar in 2011. Fittingly, Andorra is the country in which he resides, too. Ned Boulting, David Millar, Chris Boardman, Matt Rendell and Pete Kennaugh reflect - and also lament the pitfalls of betting on cycling. Don't do it, kids.
In a largely quiet day's racing, German Nils Politt cruised to victory in Nimes having launched a superb late attack from strong group of riders containing current world champion Julian Alaphilippe, and Imanol Erviti and Harry Sweeny - who finished second and third respectively. The force of nature that is Tadej Pogcacar retained yellow. Ned Boulting, Matt Rendell, David Millar, Chris Boardman and Pete Kennaugh chew the fat, and also bring you an extract from an interview with Alexi Sayle.
In addition to the important matters of the day, this episode is all about words you can't pronounce and have never used, because you're too frightened about mispronouncing or misunderstanding them. Think about the big words that fit that particular bill for you, then find out what David Millar's are. We'll give you a clue: he has three. Australian Ben O'Connor took out stage 9 of between Cluses and Tignes, with Tadej Pogacar extending his overall Yellow Jersey lead. The Slovenian is starting to look indomitable, as David would struggle to say. Ned Boulting, Pete Kennaugh, Matt Rendell and Chris Boardman also use a few long words of their own to describe the latest action.
