In this episode I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Chris Barker a man with a truly adventurous spirit.  In 1998 as a mountaineer, Chris survived a harrowing ordeal on the Tasman Glacier in the NZ Southern Alps, where he and his brother had to build a snow cave to survive,  They would spend 5 days trapped in the snow cave before their subsequent rescue. After this experience, Chris found cycling was the way he could battle best with the 'ice demons' within.  He subsequently embarked on a 16,000km bicycle tour around Australia, before discovering a passion for ultra distance cycling events.  He is a finisher in the Inaugural 'Race to the Rock' an off road event which ran from Adelaide to Uluru, and also  has legendary status as the 'Caveman' as a 5 times participant in the Indian Pacific Wheel Race, an ultra-cycling event which traverses Australia from Perth to Sydney over a distance of over 5,500kmFollow Chris via:Instagram - @loftyman12You can read Chris's account of that 5 day Snow Cave Survival here. This past summer Abdullah entered the 2019 TransAm Bike race, a solo unsupported ultra distance cycling race across the united states. He won the 4,200 mile/6,800 kilometer race in a record setting 16 days 9 hours and 56 minutes; not only talking the record but beating second place by more than 3 days. This coming off the heals of his 2018 victory in the Indian Pacific Wheel Race, a solo, unsupported bike race across Australia. Coalition, what i think you are going to find amazing about this guy, he trains hard, he's been training for a long time, he was a power lifter turned ultra cyclist, but whats truly impressive and where your going to have the most take aways is we go very very deep on the mental side of training and life. December 21 | Episode 6 This episode of Explore tells two stories. In the first half, Lionel Birnie travels to mid-Wales to meet Anna Haslock, race director of the Transcontinental Race and partner of the late Mike Hall, who founded the event. It brings the debut series of Explore full circle. In episode one we met James Hayden, winner of the Transcontinental Race two years running, and in episode two we spoke to Rupert Guinness, who was riding the Indian Pacific Wheel Race when Mike was killed. Mike's influence has been felt far and wide in the world of endurance cycling. Mike inspired so many people in the world of bikepacking, so we wanted to find out more about his life and legacy. In part two, we hear from the current round the world record holders. Jenny Graham has recenly become the fastest woman to ride round the world, riding unsupported, and taking 124 days. And Mark Beaumont is the fastest man to ride round the world, completing his supported ride in 78 days in 2017. This sixth episode of Explore is not the end of the debut season – Lionel Birnie and Hannah Troop will be back on January 1 with a bonus seventh episode. **Explore by The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science In Sport.** **RUNNING ORDER** **Part 1:** Anna Haslock, race director of the Transcontinental Race on the event and Mike Hall's life and legacy. **Part 2:** (from 52:00) Around the world with record-breakers Jenny Graham and Mark Beaumont. **THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS** **Rapha** support The Cycling Podcast all year and that support has enabled us to get the wheels rolling on series one of Explore. November 23 | Episode 2 This episode of Explore heads to Australia and then across the great nation with two riders who had very different reasons for setting out on the challenges before them. First up is a compelling interview with Rupert Guinness, an Australian cycling journalist who has been covering professional racing since 1987. Much loved by his colleagues in the Tour de France press room, and instantly recognisible thanks to his trademark Hawaiian shirts, Rupert signed up for the Indian Pacific Wheel Race – or IndiPac, as it is known – in 2017. It’s an unsupported race across Australia from Freemantle near Perth to the shadow of the Sydney Opera House – a journey of almost 5,500 kilometres. The 2017 event ended in tragedy when Mike Hall was killed and in our interview Rupert talks poignantly about why he decided to stop and go home but also why he had to be on the start line next time round. Following in the wheel tracks of the pioneering Overlanders who crossed Australia by bike and did so much to document what was in the outback and help map the country, Rupert’s ride was also a journey of self discovery… In the second half, we meet a man after Lionel’s heart – the self-styled Slow Cyclist. In 2009, Oli Broom gave up his job in the City of London and decided to cycle to Australia in time to watch the first Test in the Ashes cricket series between England and the Aussies. The thing was, the first ball was due to be bowled a full 14 months after he first turned the pedals to leave London. Riding around 100 kilometres a day, an incredible adventure took him right round the world in 412 days and led him to a new career. Better Than Yesterday, with Osher Günsberg

Abdullah Zeinab is a plant-based ultra-endurance cyclist, a man with a crystal clear outlook on life and the capacity for incredible self-awareness. You can find him on YouTube by searching The Glucose Network, or follow him on Instagram @abdullahzeinabAbdullah is a prominent figure in both the plant-based and cycling community, his videos online and live streams are the stuff of legend. However - recently Abdullah completed the Indian Pacific Wheel Race, an ultra-endurance, unsupported bike race from the Indian Ocean in Western Australia, across the bottom of the continent all the way to the Sydney Opera House and the Pacific Ocean. The 2018 edition of the race was officially cancelled just hours before the event began, however with riders from all over the world already gathered in Fremantle, the GPS trackers already fitted to the bikes, many riders chose to ride the route at their own risk.Abdullah averaged more than 500km a day as he rode his bike across the Nullarbor Plain (literally the Latin name for No Tree) and ended up over 5000km later finishing the course in incredible time.Abdullah’s story of what he has not only discovered about himself through his life but most definitely what he discovered about himself on that bike ride - is truly inspirational.I was so impressed with Abdullah as a human. He came here to the flat with his lovely girlfriend, and we sat across from each other while he gratefully opened up to my questions, fearlessly exploring the areas I asked him about. He talks fast, so this one might need a second listen in case you miss something.I’m so grateful Abdullah came around, and I’m so grateful he was so open as this conversation took some turns, and went into some pretty deep concepts that might challenge you, and might even open your eyes to a way of seeing the world you hadn't thought about before. It certainly did for me.Enjoy this conversation with Abdullah Zeinab. There's a heap of cool media and some epic races including the ABSA Cape Epic and the Indian-Pacific Wheel Race; and of course heaps more!

Val and Faith are joined in the studio on this miserable autumn morning by Will Hartnett. We briefly chat about the tragic death of Azura B in Yarraville recently, trolls abusing Janet Rice for commenting on the gender split on much of Melbourne's cycling routes and the nexus between these two. We then turn to the inaugral Indian Pacific Wheel Race, now underway after setting out from Fremantle on Saurday at 6am. Will is updating the #IPWR blog and fills us in on the leaders, their efforts so far, the conditions they've been riding in, what they can expect coming up. We also take a look at the rest of the field, with 50% of the women riding in the top ten, and some fascinating stories amongst the seventy-odd riders who've chosen to take on this challenge. Some handy links to keep in touch with the Indy Pac Race over the next week or two; Indian Pacific Wheel Race, Indian Pacific Wheel Race on Facebook, Indian Pacific Wheel Race Potato Cake Survey, Sarah Hammond Purple Dot.

Its a stunning autumn morning as Val and Faith kick off the show with their respective bike moments. Discussion turns to Sydney Rd, Brunswick and Coburg and a statement from the RACV supporting the removal of car parking from the strip to facilitate the movement of people in cars, trams and on foot and on bikes. With the State Government bound to implement accessible platforms for the tram by 2022, there is an opportunity to improve the flow of pedestrians, trams, cars and bicycles along the shopping strip and simultaneously improve the environment of the street for shoppers visiting traders. Sydney Rd is unque in that there is enough existing off-road car parking spaces to replace those lost by removing on-street parking. You can find out more at Revitalise Sydney Road. Val discusses some news about technical developments in the bike wold before we move onto a long list of rides coming up over the next few weeks. These include; 55+ Pushy Social Ride, Stop Fining Healthy Transport Ride, Melbourne World Naked Bike Ride, Cemetery Discovery Tour, the start of the Indian Pacific Wheel Race and the 2017 Women's Ride.

It's a gloomy summer's morning as Val and Faith welcome Sarah Hammond and Jesse Carlsson to the studio. We kick off with our respective bike moments, before moving on to local bike news incuding Damien Howson's win in the Herald Sun Tour and the 2016 Cycling Victoria Awards. Jesse introduces us to the Indian Pacific Wheel Race, coming up in March, talking about the inpiration behind the event, the history of intrepid overlanders in Australia and the type of race he hoped to create. Sarah Hammond tells us what she is looking forward to in the race and the novelty for Australian racers of riding on home turf. Both are looking forward to seeing the community response to the race, particularly as riders come through major cities such as Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney and we discuss the type of support riders might enjoy along the route. We finish up with some local events including Melbourne Bike Rave this weekend and the World Naked Bike Ride, which unfortunately won't co-incide with the the Melbourne leg of the Indian Pacific Wheel Race. We didn't have the chance to mention it on the show but cyclists in the City of Yarra and particularly those who approach Napier St from Edinburgh Gardens may want to have a look at the Protect Fitzroy North website about a planned development that will have a big impact on this route in terms of car traffic.

Val and Faith are joined in the studio on a bitterly cold Monday morning by Sarah Hammond, Jesse Carlsson and Col Bell. We run through some news from the weekend, including the Tour de France and the Tour de Beechworth, and everyone shares their bike moments.Jesse fills our listeners in on the Trans Am Bike Race, which he won in 2015. We finish up with Jesse's plans for two events in Australia, the Race to the Rock and the Indian Pacific Wheel Race.  We finish up with a far too short round up of events which should ahve included, a Projector Bike Ride this Friday night, Fields of Joy CX Women's Development Day and Mixed Gender Development Day on Saturday july 30th, and of course the headlining event the Melbourne Grand Prix of Cyclocross on the weekend of August 6 & 7th (National CX Series) including the Lisa Jacobs Farewell Race!
