Listeners don't just experience a fascinating historical drama—they also become steeped in a bloody gothic Western. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Steve Cummings discuss the stellar performances that are the center of this compelling listening experience. Narrator Marin Ireland fully embodies the beleaguered humanities professor who, while deep diving into the campus archive, discovers the story of her ancestors. Complete with creative production touches, the result is a dark, satisfying listen. Narrator Angel Pean's stand-out performance is essential here. AudioFile's Steve Cummings and host Jo Reed discuss how her storytelling skill fully embodies these characters and the detailed and occasionally magical world they inhabit. Junie, an enslaved girl in 1800s Alabama, lives with the loss of her sister, Minnie, whose death is a weight on her conscience. An encounter with Minnie's ghost changes Junie's life, opening a new path that could include escaping her captors. The rich listening experience envelopes listeners in the powerful story. Listeners don't need to be superfans of ice skating to be drawn into this audiobook. The world of pairs skating competition provides the setting for a story of young, elite athletes who are fighting for Olympic gold. AudioFile's Steve Cummings and host Jo Reed discuss how the narrations are uniformly exceptional in this audiobook structured as an oral history. Standouts include Christine Lakin as the complicated lead; her voice captures a mix of focused competitiveness and messy relationships. Remco Evenepoel was injured in a crash with a mail truck and Jonny has invented a new quiz. Plus, Steve Cummings, a former INEOS rider and sports director, is joining Team Jayco AlUla. The Critérium du Dauphiné starts on Sunday and the Tour de Suisse takes place soon after, and both races are clear indicators that the Tour de France is now just weeks away. Top of the menu in July, of course, will be the much-hyped and long-awaited clash between the big four – Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogačar, Remco Evenepoel and Primož Roglič. But what of the Ineos Grenadiers? Knocked from their perch having dominated the Tour during the 2010s, the British team is resurgent. They may not have a rider to compare with the four main favourites, but can Jim Ratcliffe's riders be the disruptors at this year's Tour de France? We speak to Ineos team manager Steve Cummings, who highlights the untapped potential of young Spaniard Carlos Rodríguez, the ever-improving form of 2019 Tour champion Egan Bernal, who's getting back to his best following his life-threatening crash in 2022, and of the all-round strength within the British team, whose Tour line-up is set to provide an interesting combination of youth and experience. Plus, just a fortnight or so back, it was looking hightly unlikely that Jonas Vingegaard would defend his Tour de France title. However, having returned to training at home in Denmark and then in the hills of Majorca, the Visma | Lease A Bike leader has joined his teammates at an altitude training camp in the French ski resort of Tignes this week. With Vingegaard ever more likely to be on the Tour start line in Florence on 29 June, we speak to his coach Tim Heemskerk, who tells us that the Dane's training is being assessed and tweaked on a day by day basis with the aim of getting him into the right condition to be able to compete with his rivals at the at the Tour. "But," says Heemskerk, "we're respecting his recovery of course, we're not forcing anything..." Earlier this week, RadioCycling's Chris Marshall-Bell travelled to Switzerland to visit the headquarters of the UCI and the International Testing Agency (ITA) that now oversees anti-doping in cycling. Having spoken at length to UCI president David Lappartient, the ITA's recently-appointed investigative chief Nick Raudenski and Olivier Banuls, head of the ITA's cycling unit, Chris reveals their take on technical fraud and particularly motor doping, their fears about athletes microdosing banned products, and changes to the ADAMS whereabouts system. Also, in "Ways to Make Cycling Better" we hear from Lidl-Trek star Mads Pedersen, who has an intriguing suggestion for increasing connection with fans. Tadej Pogačar has a convincing lead in the Giro d'Italia as the race pauses for the first rest day. With nine stages completed he's already won three stages and could easily have bagged five. Imperious on every terrain, he's even turned his hand to providing a devastatingly strong lead-out for his UAE team's sprinter, Juan Sebastián Molano. He's racing for fun and for victory. So, we ask, can anything stop him from cantering away with the maglia rosa as the race nears its Roman finale? In order to answer that question, we speak to the directors on the two teams that have pressed Pogačar hardest over the Giro's opening nine days. We hear first from Bora-Hansgrohe DS John Wakefield, who's full of praise for Bora leader Dani Martínez, and tells us "if the opportunity presents, we'll definitely go for it". The Ineos Grenadiers have signalled their determination to be aggressive since the opening day, when their Ecuadorian champion Jhonatan Narváez outsprinted Pogačar to become this Giro's first leader. After Narváez went oh so close to a second win in Naples, we spoke to Ineos team manager Steve Cummings, who explains why his team have been "excellent" since the race started and why cycling's history suggests that there's still a chance of Ineos leader Geraint Thomas taking the title. After Lewis Askey last time out, it's the turn of Harrison Wood to update us on his Giro progress. The Cofidis rider reflects on the stage victory taken by teammate Benjamin Thomas, the awful state of the Neapolitan roads, and how he's quickly learning how to save his personal "bullets" for exactly the right moment to fire them. We also reflect on the decision to select Richard Virenque as a torchbearer for the Olympic flame, which has arrived on French soil and is now being zig-zagging its way northwards from Marseille to Paris. A doper who consistently lied about his actions until the evidence of his cheating was overwhelming, does Virenque really embody the values of the Olympic Games? Last time out in our regular "How to Make Cycling Better" feature, Soudal QuickStep sprinter Luke Lamperti suggested getting rid of time trials in stage races. Now we hear from his former team boss at the Trinity Racing team, Pete Kennaugh, who explains why he'd do away with "cognitive gains". In Lee's own words: I was born and raised in Concord, NC. Just Northeast of Charlottle, it was a town of 25,000 back then. As long as I can remember, music was around. Whether it be the turntables or 8 tracks; where my older brothers played rock and roll of the 60s & 70s, Dad listened to older country artists or Mom's Pontiac Bonneville, which seemed to always have the hits playing through it's car stereo from either 61AM Big Ways, 95FM WROQ or 1100 WBT-AM…Music was always a comforting companion. Not coming from a particularly musical family other than them playing the radio, the drum bug came from the next door neighbor playing and then taking it from there. I was playing with records by 8-9 years old; began school band in 7th grade with the natural progression through high school playing in marching, jazz and symphonic bands throughout. Since music was not viewed in my family as something you pursued as a career, I studied English Literature & Writing at Pfeiffer University until my senior year in 1990-91 when long time friend and a musical mentor, Rick Lee, called and said, "I'm forming a new band and you're the drummer." This was the beginnings of my music career and the 2019 Carolina Beach Music Hall Of Fame band, Too Much Sylvia. After leaving TMS in 1994, I played with a few different bands out of Charlotte and all around the East Coast through 1996. In September 1996, a weeklong trip to Nashville, TN put the hook in and I moved to Music City on January 11, 1997. Fortunately, I got club and road work pretty quickly while learning constantly along the way. The idea was to make a living while seeing the world and that plan came to fruition over the years backing artists like Gary Allan, Mark Chesnutt, Heidi Newfield, Kelly Pickler, Loverboy, Kendell Marvel and, now, Hank Williams Jr. Also, to be able to play and share time with some of the finest musicians & people along the way has just been magic. It's a ride I can't get off of...Nor do I want to. Along with time on the road with Hank Jr., I offer drum/percussion tracks to any clients out of the "Boom Boom Drum Room", do club/showcase/session work around town and spend time caring for my family. It's never boring and music is STILL a comforting companion. Hope to see y'all at a show sometime!! As the Tour de France leaves the Pyrenees, these are RadioCycling's news headlines...It's been frantic, the tactics have been crazy at times, but it's also been totally captivating. We look back on two days in the Pyrenees when Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar tried to knock lumps out of each other and in doing so served up racing action that was every bit as enthralling as last year's epic mountain duel between the pair, the sport's two outstanding climbers. While the dynamic duo have fought their own private battle, the Ineos Grenadiers have found themselves on the fringes of the GC battle. We speak to the British squad's sporting director Steve Cummings, who admits that the sport's most lavishly funded team is in transition and that they will have to reset their goals at the Tour because they've already slipped out of the contest for the yellow jersey. Friday will bring the sprinters back to centre of the action, with a stage into Bordeaux, a city long associated with the greatest sprint names in cycling's history. We hear from the Alpecin-Deceuninck team, who've shown in the two previous bunch sprints that they're a step ahead of their rivals, well-drilled in support of Jasper Philipsen, who's finishing speed is currently peerless. We also hear from Fabio Jakobsen, who's still nursing injuries sustained Tuesday's sprint crash but has fought through the mountains with the aim of redeeming a hitherto difficult Tour with a stage win.We then turn away from the Tour to examine the magnificent road race routes that have been announced for the 2024 Paris Olympics. As well as breezing by the chateau at Versailles, the men's and women's courses will feature a narrow, cobbled climb through Montmartre to the Basilica of Sacré Coeur, passing, Jeremy points out, one of the city's most notorious bars and a renowned butcher's shop. We have all of the key details.PLUS, in our Ground Beans round-up of news snippets and rumours, we reveal the yellow jersey wearer who "looks a banana" and the Instagram post Fabio Jakobsen was persuaded to change... Tour de France selection is always a tricky business, team managers giving good news to some riders and dismaying others. This is typified by the hullabaloo at Groupama-FDJ, where team boss Marc Madiot has delighted Thibaut Pinot fans by selecting the mercurial climber for a final lap of France before his retirement, but made way for him by discarding sprinter Arnaud Démare, who's had the Tour on his programme all year. We delve into the news that created beaucoup de brouhaha in France.Staying with Tour selection, we examine the riders pushing their case at the Tour of Switzerland and speak to Ineos directeur sportif Steve Cummings, who reveals that the British team's line-up is still very much under discussion after a Critérium du Dauphiné showing that left them with more questions than answers.Cycling has followed F1 in its Netflix treatment of the sport, and now it's set to follow suit in another intriguing way with team radio transmissions being opened to fans during the Tour de France. The move is designed to offer more clarity on team tactics, but, as Jayco-Alula directeur sportif Matt White tells us, the teams aren't completely sold on the idea of letting their rivals know what they're up to when the race is on.The Tour de France is just around the corner and, as is the case every season, that has been the trigger for the transfer rumour mill to pick up speed. We look at who's going where, who's staying put and which teams are looking to move up the hierarchy and challenge the big four squads at the top. Support the show
There's a lot to cram into this episode. It kicks off with an exclusive interview with ex-pro turned riders' union president Adam Hansen, who talks about the challenges of his first months as head of the CPA, why he's trying to be more inclusive and open, and about the riders' biggest concern – no prizes for guessing that it's race safety.Covid is causing chaos at the Giro d'Italia. Is it time for tighter restrictions to be brought back in with the Tour de France looming? Ineos DS Steve Cummings gives his perspective on dealing with the virus in the weeks ahead.Soudal-QuickStep boss Patrick Lefevere has stated that Remco Evenepoel won't be riding the Tour, but the world champion is keen to return to racing soon. We reveal when and where the Belgian is hoping to be back in action.Plus, we've squeezed in the current state of play at the Giro and assess the prospects of race leader Geraint Thomas and his challengers for the title at this chaotic Covid- and crash-hit Grand Tour. Bradley Wiggins and Matt Stephens return to discuss Stage 12 of the Tour de France on the latest episode of the Bradley Wiggins Show. There's praise for Tom Pidcock whose “almost superhuman” performance left Matt on the verge of tears after he became the youngest ever winner on Alpe d'Huez. The 22-year-old became the second British winner – after Geraint Thomas - on the iconic col and Wiggins has tipped the Yorkshireman as a winner of the Tour de France in the future. The 2012 winner thinks that the Tour de France suits him best of all the Grand Tours. There is also praise for the new environment on show at his team Ineos under the guidance of Steve Cummings and Rod Ellingworth. Arguably, though, the story of the day was Chris Froome's return to form with a third-placed finish. Wiggins says it is testament to his resilience and perseverance to return to world-class form following three years of rehabilitation. The Bradley Wiggins Show is edited by Chris Watts.Produced by Pete Burton. Rapha presents Life in the Peloton! Have you ever wondered why riders attack off the front? Why do they form breakaways? Is it just for the TV cameras or is it actually a race-winning tactic? The Tour de France is upon us and you're almost guaranteed to see a daily breakaway. It's historically how a pro cycling race is run: the first 50km is riders attacking off the front – trying to form a breakaway, the breakaway goes, gets several minutes ahead, then the peloton chases them back for the final sprint. But why go to all this effort? And is it really that straight forward? Who controls how close the peloton gets? Is it the breakaway, or the peloton? Or even the team directors? And is it really that easy to just ride off the front of the peloton in the first place? There's so much more to breakaways than meets the eye, and I was keen to dive into this essential part of racing with some of the true specialists in the peloton. In this episode I speak to two masters of the breakaway: Dutchman Taco van der Hoorn (Team Intermarché Wanty Gobert) – the modern-day breakaway artist, and Steve Cummings (DS at Team Ineos Grenadiers) – the British breakaway Veteran, (who won two Tour de France stages from the break) to hear their perspective on the art of the breakaway. I also chat to Neo-Pro Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) for a newcomer's perspective on pro peloton breakaways. And finally, I couldn't forget the other side of a breakaway – the chase. I speak to arguably the best controller of breakaways in this generation, Belgian Tim Declercq (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl), or The Tractor, as he's known. All these guys had a different take on the art of the breakaway, but one thing's for sure – they are breakaway specialists. I absolutely loved this chat & hope you gain as much insight as I did into what's really happening in the minds of the riders racing full gas to get away from the peloton. I hope you also enjoy hearing from special guest, Sam Bewley who helps me introduce the episode. Stay tuned next week for Talking Luft with Steve Cummings and be sure to tune in to The Cycling Podcast next week as I cover the Tour de France with them daily. Cheers, Mitch Listen Listen & subscribe to this series on the Life in the Peloton website, at Spotify, Apple Podcasts, GooglePlay, Stitcher, Youtube or your favourite pod app. Show Notes Check out Taco's win from the breakaway at Bink Bank Tour here and the Giro d'Italia here. Rapha presents Talking Luft! This week I've got Aussie former professional cyclist, and commentator Simon Gerrans on Talking Luft – brother to Andy Gerrans, Pro team Osteopath, who I had on the podcast last week talking about life as a staff member on a World Tour team. For those not familiar with Simon, he had a hugely successful 14 year career – winning stages in all 3 Grand Tours as well as wearing the Yellow Jersey at the Tour de France and taking out multiple one day classics such a Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Milan-San Remo. Simon's no stranger to the podcast, I had him on for an in-depth chat about his career way back in 2017, when he was in his 13th year pro. Head back and listen to that to hear more about Simon. But for now, we're Talking Luft. We chat caps & where Luft originated from. We get into the serious stuff like shaving legs post retirement, old team kit, Gravel bikes, the atmosphere at Amstel Gold Race, cyclocross racers, Fassa Bortolo kit, a Vuelta war story, the epic 2006 Tour de France and so much more! Gerro's so easy to chat to, and always has a great story to tell. I hope you love the listen as much as I did. Stay tuned next week for an episode dedicated to the art of breakaway – the Breakaway Theory with Taco Van der Hoorn, Steve Cummings, Ben Healy and Tim DeClercq. There's a well worn path between the saddle of a race bike and the director's seat in a team car. Who better to advise young riders than the ex-pro who's been there, done that and worn the leader's jersey? On this edition we talk to two ex-racers who are following that tradition. Multiple world and Olympic champion Anna van der Breggen will be taking up a director's role with her SD Worx team next season. And Steve Cummings – Grand Tour stage winner, Olympic medallist and breakaway specialist – will spend another season as development coach with Ineos Grenadiers. In this show I'm talking to Steve Cummings – former National Champion, Tour of Britain winner and double Tour de France stage winner. If you don't remember his stunning outwitting of both Romain Bardet and Thibaut Pinot for the stage win at Mende in 2015 you have no cycling soul. But we're not just talking about the elation of putting your arms in the air. We're talking about how exactly you achieve that sort of victory. How do you get into the day's breakaway in the first place, how do you save energy all stage as you wait for the last few kilometres, and what sort of power numbers do you need to be able to hit in the finale if you're going to bring it home? Before you do any of that, though, how do you train for it? We'll talk about Steve's shed of pain in Tuscany, just big enough for a turbo trainer and a fan, where the foundations of much of his success was laid with an austerity that would have done credit to Rocky. He also tells me about how you have to be clever. It's not enough to have the legs. You need to understand everything that's going on around you and make things, like the aerodynamics of yourself and others, work your way. And there's some context for Steve's abilities from physiologist Jamie Pringle and psychologist Josie Perry, who between them help explain just how remarkable a rider Cummings is. --------------------------- If you liked this episode of Faster, please tell your friends about it. Today's episode is a conversation with Steve Cummings of The Frugal Expat blog. Steve is an American and an adventurer who has traveled most of the U.S. and 19 other countries, and his wife Sarah is an Australian who has logged adventures in about 56 different countries. The couple have a travel blog called “Cummings and Goings” and another site, called "The Frugal Expat." I discovered Steve via his brand The Frugal Expat and saw that he was currently living in Taipai, Taiwan, and was intrigued to hear about his journey to financial freedom and how he jumped into the the expat life--something I'm very much looking forward to doing myself. Steve, The Frugal Expat has not always been frugal and he's obviously not always been an expat. So we'll hop into this conversation to find out about how his life of travel and wealth building began. Steve Cummings is one of the legends of modern cycling. An impressive CV which includes stage wins in the Tour de France & Vuleta, National Titles and Olympic Medals. What's more impressive than his list of results is Steve's mindset. A romantic with a rebellious cycling philosophy.
