Great Bible Truths with Dr David Petts

Talk 40 Mark 13:24-37 Signs of His Coming? Welcome to Talk 40 in our series on Mark's Gospel. Last time we were looking at Mark 13:1-23 and considering some of the problems in interpreting this difficult chapter. I suggested that most of what Jesus says in that passage relates primarily to the events that would occur around the time of the destruction of Jerusalem in AD70, which Jesus so accurately predicted in verses 1-4. Today we're considering the rest of chapter 13, verses 24-37, where, as we shall see, some verses are by no means easy to understand. But let's begin by reading verses 24-31. 24"But in those days, following that distress, "'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; 25 the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.' 26 "At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.   28 "Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. 30 I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.   Before we get into the passage let me remind you of what I said last time about difficulties interpreting the whole chapter. This will be a very brief summary, so, if you haven't yet listened to, or read the notes on, last week's talk, I recommend that you do so before going any further.   The first problem arises from the fact that Jesus is answering two questions asked by the disciples at the beginning of the chapter and it's not always easy to decide which part of Jesus' answer refers to which question. Is this verse talking about the destruction of the temple or does it refer to the second coming?   The second difficulty is deciding which parts of Jesus' answer are to be taken literally and which are to be taken symbolically. In my view, much of the chapter is to be understood literally, but some verses must be intended to be understood symbolically or metaphorically.   In attempting to resolve these difficulties, I said that the first thing we must do is to find out more about the context, and I gave a brief description of what we know from history about the horrendous events that occurred surrounding the time of the destruction of the temple in AD70. So now, in today's talk, I want to do three things:   ·      Examine two very different interpretations of verses 24-31. ·      Emphasise why it's a mistake to be constantly looking for signs of the Lord's return (vv.32-37). ·      Summarise what lessons we have learnt from the chapter as a whole. Verses 24-31  Two different interpretations Interpretations of these verses fall into two main categories: a)     Those who see most or all of this passage as referring to the second coming b)     Those who understand most or all of the passage to refer to the events around AD70. Clearly these are two very different points of view, and we won't have time to deal with them in great detail. So what I'm going to do is summarise four main arguments that seem to support the view that this passage relates to the second coming, and alongside them to state a counter argument that is sometimes made by those who take the alternative view. It is not my intention to be dogmatic, and, in fact, part of my purpose is to encourage you to form your own conclusions, but not to be too dogmatic, whatever your view may be.   1)     In Matthew's account one of the questions the disciples asked Jesus was about the second coming (Matthew 24:3). We would, therefore, expect that at least part of Jesus' answer would relate to the second coming.   HOWEVER, one problem with this argument is that in verse 30 Jesus says, I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. So these verses, it is argued, cannot refer to the second coming unless Jesus himself mistakenly believed that the second coming would take place within a generation of his making the statement, which it clearly did not, but the fall of Jerusalem certainly did!   2)     The events described in vv.24-25 would appear to be unique in world history. They are the kind of things one might expect at the end of the age and verse 27 talks of the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.   HOWEVER, in Daniel 7:13-14 we read: In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshipped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.   So, it is argued, in its original context, the Son of Man is coming to God and could well refer to Jesus' ascension into Heaven rather than his coming from Heaven. Moreover, it's difficult to see how Jesus could have intended us to understand phrases like the stars will fall from the sky (v25) literally. The terminology used in these verses is reminiscent of the poetic language used by the Old Testament prophets and should be interpreted symbolically. And in light of the fact that they were to be fulfilled within a generation, this, it is argued, is the best way to interpret them.   3)     If the fig tree mentioned in verse 28 refers to Israel as it appears to in Mark 11:20-25, then the passage must relate to the end times when, according to this view, the full number of Gentiles has come in and all Israel shall be saved (Romans 11:25-26, cf. Luke 21:24).   HOWEVER, there is no need to assume that the mention of the fig tree refers to Israel on this occasion. Jesus could equally well have meant that, just as you know that when the leaves of a fig tree start to come out, the summer is near, so be absolutely sure that, when you see the things I have been talking about begin to happen, the dreadful events that will take place at the destruction of Jerusalem will soon come to pass.   4)     In verse 31 Jesus says that Heaven and earth will pass away, which suggests that the passage relates to the time of the end.   HOWEVER, the point that Jesus is making in this verse is that whatever happens, his words will never fail. There is a clear claim to deity here. Who else but God could make such a claim? Jesus is the truth (John 14:6). You can rely on everything he says, whether it be about the second coming or the destruction of Jerusalem, or anything else, for that matter. So that concludes my summary of two very different interpretations of verses 24-31, and in my view it would be unwise to take a dogmatic position on either side. There are some passages of Scripture that are open to more than one possible interpretation. However, when we come to verses 32-37 it seems obvious, to me at least, that these verses must relate to the second coming, as a comparison with the parallel passage in Matthew 24:36-44 clearly indicates.   Verses 32-37  Only the Father knows the timing, so don't look for signs, but be ready 32 "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. 34 It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. 35 "Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back –   whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: 'Watch!'"   As I have already said, the parallel passage in Matthew 24 makes it clear that it relates to the second coming. Jesus says: As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man (vv37-39).   This cannot possibly refer to the coming of the Son of Man described in Daniel 7, which as we have seen may well be better understood to be a reference to Jesus' ascension into Heaven rather than his return from it. But in these verses Jesus is clearly referring to his second coming which will be as unexpected as the flood was in the time of Noah.   However, unlike Noah, who was told on what day God would send the rain, no-one will know the timing of the Lord's return. Jesus said that even he did not know. And if Jesus didn't know, I wonder why some Christians seem to think that they can work it out! But it's sometimes said in response to this criticism that it was only the day and the hour that we cannot know. But in the next verse Jesus says, You do not know when that time will come. The Greek word for time here is kairos, which does not refer to the time of day, but means season. This is backed up by what Jesus reiterated in in Acts 1:7 when he told his disciples:   It's not for you to know the times or the seasons which the Father has put under his own authority.   So why does Jesus tell us to Be alert! Be on guard! Watch!? The answer is simple. He doesn't mean watch for signs. He means Stay awake! Be alert (v33) literally means, Don't go to sleep. It's used of the disciples in Gethsemane whom Jesus found sleeping, and here in verse 36 Jesus says, If he (the Son of Man) comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. And the word for watch in verses 34, 35, and 37 means Keep awake, be vigilant. It's used elsewhere in the New Testament in connection with: ·      Not letting the enemy break through (Luke 12:39) ·      Standing firm in the faith and being strong (1 Corinthians 16:13) ·      Keeping awake in prayer (Colossians 4:2) ·      Being sober and vigilant because the enemy goes about like a roaring lion… (1 Peter 5:8) ·      Staying awake and not being found naked and shamefully exposed when the Lord returns (Revelation 16:15). So, when the Lord tells us to watch, he is not telling us to watch for signs. He's saying that  because we do not know when he will return, we need to be in a permanent state of readiness. And we can do that without constantly looking for signs. We can do it by living lives that please him and by using the gifts and talents he has given us (Matthew 25:14-30). We should concentrate on telling others about him, not trying to know what Jesus has told us is not for us to know (Acts 1:6-8).   Lessons we can learn from the whole chapter So now, as we draw to  a close our discussion on this difficult chapter, let's remind ourselves of some of the lessons we have learnt. I have pointed out that the problems of interpretation arise from two factors, 1) deciding which of the disciples' two questions in verse 4 Jesus is answering at any point in the chapter, and 2) determining when the language he is using  is meant to be understood literally or symbolically. Because of these difficulties, I have suggested that it would be unwise to be dogmatic, but that perhaps verses 5-23 should be seen as largely relating to Jesus' prophecy of destruction of Jerusalem in AD70, that verses 24-31 are open to either interpretation depending mainly on whether one sees 24-27 as literal or symbolic, and that verses 32-37 relate very definitely to the second coming.   However, despite the difficulties, I do believe that the principles that Jesus teaches in all three sections are relevant to all Christians throughout the history of the church, and so I want to conclude by reminding you of seven things that I have mentioned already, either in the last talk or in this. I hope that, whatever your view on the second coming, you will find yourself in agreement, at least with most of them.   ·      We must watch out for deceivers ·      We must not be surprised by international turmoil and natural disasters ·      We must expect to be persecuted ·      We must continue to tell others about Jesus, relying on the help of the Holy Spirit ·      We must not try to work out the timing of Christ's coming, because it's not for us to know ·      We must stay awake, in a permanent state of readiness for the Lord's return, because ·      THE LORD IS CERTAINLY COMING and, if we're ready, we simply do not need to know when. Finally, as I mentioned last time, we'll be taking a break for the rest of August, and our series on Mark will continue, God willing, in September.

Lucinda welcomes back guest Michelle Parry Slater from Kairos Modern Learning to discuss the concept of the "last hundred days." Michelle shares her personal experience of working her notice period before relocating to Australia and highlights the importance of focusing on the end of the employee lifecycle as much as the beginning. KEY TAKEAWAYS Shift the focus from just the first 100 days to also include the last 100 days of an employee's journey in the organisation. Encourage open and honest conversations between employees and managers about career aspirations, motivations, and potential exits. Emphasise the importance of knowledge management during transitions to ensure valuable information is not lost when employees leave. Build high trust relationships between managers and employees to facilitate better communication and understanding of individual needs and aspirations. Aim for employees to leave with advocacy, involvement in recruitment of successors, and a sense of legacy to create a positive impact even after they depart. BEST MOMENTS "We only ever hear people talking about the first hundred days. And it got me thinking, what does the last hundred days need to look like? And why don't we talk about it?" "Essentially, that whole employee lifecycle starts with that brand awareness. And I think some of that brand awareness rubs off from the last hundred days, because if you've got people leaving with advocacy..." "Do you think companies are scared sometimes? Let's say you're a smaller business or, you know, you hear the expression people talk about dead man's shoes, you have no intention of going anywhere and people perceive that the only way is, is into your job." "I think that especially in a smaller company, it's very comfortable, it works, why are you going to rock the boat?" This episode explores the unexpected connection between social work and the act of selling. Michael talks about why social workers are constantly selling their beliefs and values to parents in order to advocate for the best interests of children. Drawing parallels between personal interactions and court appearances, Michael emphasises the importance of presenting oneself positively, both in attitude and appearance, to effectively influence others. Ultimately, the episode concludes by highlighting the crucial aspect of believing in oneself before attempting to sell one's beliefs to others. KEY TAKEAWAYS Recognise the importance of selling oneself in various aspects of life, including social work and giving evidence in court. Present oneself in a physically presentable manner, such as dressing appropriately, to make a good impression and show respect. Have a positive attitude and demeanour, as it can significantly impact how one is perceived before even speaking. Be well-prepared and knowledgeable about the evidence being presented, displaying confidence and persuasiveness. Emphasise the significance of believing in oneself and one's abilities as a crucial aspect of effectively selling oneself to others. BEST MOMENTS "From being someone who was quite adverse to the idea of selling, to one in which I now accept my involvement in it and in fact recognise how important selling is to the success of my role as a social worker." "You're actually engaged in selling yourself all the time, it's just that you don't see yourself as doing so."  "Poor attitudes are like neon lights or neon signs glowing in the dark, announcing your poor disposition, thoughts and feelings."  "Attending court wearing trainers, a hoodie and a pair of jeans exposing part of your underwear does not tend to portray you in the best possible light."  "In giving great evidence at court or selling yourself well, how or the way you say it is as important, if not more so, than what you say."  VALUABLE RESOURCES familycourtcoaching@gmail.com Instagram: michael240656 HOST BIO Michael Watson is a qualified social worker and author with over thirty years of experience working with children and families. I am joined by Michael Crookson to delve into the world of tech solutions for commercial properties. With over 20 years of experience, Michael shares insights on managed data, voice, and cabling solutions offered by Datel Solutions. The conversation covers the evolution of telephone systems from traditional lines to cloud-based solutions, emphasising the importance of infrastructure planning and integration for seamless operations. We give practical advice on optimising connectivity, future-proofing buildings with Cat6 cabling, and the benefits of embracing AI and automation in property management.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Proper planning and consideration of connectivity options are crucial before investing in a property to avoid costly infrastructure challenges later on. Emphasise the importance of future-proofing buildings by installing Cat6 cabling and structured infrastructure to support evolving technology needs. Highlight the significance of early engagement with telecom experts to streamline operations and enhance tenant experiences. Encourage developers to prioritise maintenance and refurbishment planning to avoid costly and disruptive issues in the future. BEST MOMENTS "Technology has evolved. Back in those times, a telephone system was there to simply make and take calls. But now we're speaking to businesses about integration with third-party solutions." "We still provide what are called SIP channels for on-premise solutions, but a SIP channel is essentially using the internet to deliver voice." "Businesses don't pay for calls any longer. That's a thing of the past. So essentially, what we provide is a cloud license with a minutes bundle attached to it and a handset." "I think a real buzzword at the moment is automation. It's integrating systems so that businesses can simplify operations and really enhance a customer, a client experience." What's the drill for? How to use it to improve your skills and errors to watch out for. 01:00 Drills and Skills We do them for crew alignment, blade handling, technique, isolating part of the stroke or exaggerating part of the stroke to amplify its effect. 01:30 The reverse pick drill This starts at the catch - sitting at full compression. Start with a very short stroke (2 inches of the slide). Some like to start with a blade placement before this stage. - Tapping and placement - 2 inches stroke (5 cm) - from catch to 3/4 slide [using one quarter of the slide] - from catch to 1/2 slide - from catch to 1/4 slide - legs only rowing [note different from normal rowing] - legs and body [straight arms] - normal rowing including arms 04:45 what's the drill for? 1) Placing the blade before the leg drive begins. Some people assume the blade placement and leg drive are simultaneous. They are not. These are sequential movements - on the recovery your hands move upwards so the blade goes down towards the water while still moving forwards on the slide. 2) Get the correct sequencing off the catch - legs initiate the drive and back/arms follow. 06:00 How to use this drill The effect of this drill is to make a longer stroke if the blade is placed more rapidly and closer to full compression on the legs (so you miss less water). It helps to align the leg drive of the crew. Coaches - view your crew from 45 degrees from the stern to watch their knees rising and falling through the stroke cycle. When to coach an individual versus whole crew https://fastermastersrowing.com/focus-on-whole-crew-or-an-individual/ 08:15 How to teach the reverse pick drill You need to slow it right down and if possible in a stable environment with half the crew sitting out. So others can use square blades. Rehearse each of the static positions slowly with the boat stationary. They must all know these first - start at the catch (blade square and buried); move to 2 inches from the catch; one quarter from the catch; half slide from the catch; three quarters slide from the catch; legs only. Straight arm rowing and finally adding the arms so you end the drill at the finish position with the blade still buried under the water. Rehearse each several times. 10:30 Start to do the drill at the catch placement into the water with raising and lowering the blade in and out of the water. Watch for shoulder shrugs and folks using a back swing to place the blade rather than the arms lifting moving alone. Move onto 2 inches on the slide. Show the athletes how to push on the foot stretcher to initiate the drive phase. Emphasise the hips driving backwards and the body angle doesn't change. 11:30 Many people find it difficult to separate the leg drive from the body swing. Watch for chins lifting if this happens. 12:15 Best not to do more than 10 strokes at each position. It's a lot of load on the body. Inflexible athletes will find it hard. Article on easy setup for comfort in the boat. https://fastermastersrowing.com/adapting-rowing-rigging-for-masters-physiology/ Join in the rest of the crew progressively so that the people who have done the drill are are focused on their catch and leg driven power phase - as the boat moves faster, they will find it more challenging to get the same feeling of placement and "grip" on the water before it moved. They can anticipate the catch and adjust their timing to keep the feeling of load. 15:00 Repeat the drill three times during an outing. Teaching it on the land first using an erg can be helpful as you can get up close and position an athlete's body. How to get the athlete to learn the leg drive using hips first. 16:00 Errors to watch out for - Using the shoulders lifting to place the blade - The slide doesn't move the same distance from the catch as the handle does - Drive before placement - Wait at the catch before placing the blade 18:30 This drill benefits from frequent practice. Maybe use it in your warm up or on the erg.

Leaders, listen up! An inclusive culture is your shortcut to success. Nothing fluffy about it, but it does mean you're going to want become OK with difference because of the incomparable value delivered by teams of diverse thinkers with range, and breadth of life experience. Your job and the job of your managers will be harder to begin with as you adapt. When you surrender to the idea that the right mix of people looking at a problem, working on projects, selling, buying, running operations, leading and managing works so much better if your team can think AS your customer. A fraction are genuinely aligned around the customer and the outcomes they intend to rent. Fewer still play nicely with others to ensure the customer gets the best possible outcome and their risk is reduced to zero or as close to. A smaller fraction would be willing to recommend a competitor if it was better for the customer. And their leadership will probably not be happy if the experience of my clients is anything to go by! But the results are well worth it ... Too many companies leave talent and treasure on the table by ignoring diversity. Just like top teams scout far and wide for recruits, you need all hands on deck to win consistently, repeatedly, predictably in today's uncertain, fast paced, ultra competitive market. A diverse team often sees what a homogenous group misses - they connect with a wider customer base and bring in more revenue - but the best thing is they catch the negative consequences one department's success inflict elsewhere in the value chain. This can give you back 1-4 days PER MANAGER and PER SALESPERSON per week. How? Listen to Raymona and me discuss: The importance of understanding different perspectives and backgrounds Common challenges with D&I, such as lack of focus on culture change and middle management training Recruiting for culture add vs culture fit and screening in vs screening out The importance of identity and the previously confusing world of pronouns while maintaining civility in discussions Overcoming fear and bias through self-awareness, interaction and difficult conversations Aligning D&I with business goals like maximising talent and customer connections The business case for diversity is a no-brainer, but most pay lip service to it or miss it entirely by confusing a better future for everyone with political squabbling. Forget labels, focus on our shared humanity. Make understanding each other a priority. Diverse perspectives lead to better decisions and more innovation - talents you can't afford to leave on the bench! For those facing glass ceilings, developing self-awareness is your game-changer. Know thyself and seek out of uncomfortable but important conversations to strengthen crucial skills. Emphasise common goals over perceived differences. With the right coaching, middle managers can remove  barriers facing most of their peers in the competition.  In today's marketplace, diversity dictates your fate. Will you be victims of your own blindspots or victors with vision? The choice is yours - but choosing inclusion unlocks unlimited potential for your people and profits. The winning team has a place for everyone's talents. Will you build one? 7 Tips for Successful Presentations

Talk

The ability to communicate your ideas clearly and compellingly is an invaluable skill. Whether you're presenting in a boardroom, lecturing in a classroom, speaking to a large audience, or even preparing course content, your message's impact relies on your presentation skills. To help you convey your ideas like a seasoned professional, we've covered seven essential presentation tips in this podcast that will improve your chances of making a lasting impression on your audience. 1. Know Your Audience The foundation of any successful presentation is a deep understanding of your audience. Start by creating customer personas or profiling your students to grasp their interests, expectations, and knowledge levels. Tailor your message accordingly to ensure it resonates with your audience. If you're unsure about your audience, consider conducting surveys or feedback sessions to gather insights and address their needs effectively. 2. Structure Is Key Effective presentations follow a clear and concise structure. Begin with a compelling hook, such as a startling question or a fascinating fact, to engage your audience from the start. Organise the body of your presentation into three main points or sections, as people tend to remember information presented in sets of three. Conclude by summarising your key points and offering a compelling call to action or a memorable final thought. 3. Utilise Visual Aids Wisely Visual aids, such as slides, charts, infographics, and images, can enhance your presentation's impact. However, use them judiciously and ensure they are simple, relevant, and free of clutter. Visual aids should complement your message, not overshadow it. Consider tools like Canva or PowerPoint for interactive elements but don't let them dominate your presentation. Engage your audience by incorporating drawings or interactive elements that connect with your message. 4. Make Eye Contact Establishing eye contact with your audience is crucial for building credibility and connection. It allows you to gauge your audience's understanding and adjust your delivery based on their reactions. Encourage engagement through questions and interactive sessions, which not only keep your audience involved but also provide valuable insights for improving your presentation. 5. Rehearse Thoroughly Practice makes perfect. Familiarise yourself with your material, test your technology, and present with confidence. Practice your presentation aloud, paying particular attention to any challenging sections. If possible, rehearse in front of a trusted colleague or a small audience to gather feedback. Familiarity and practice breed confidence and improve your overall performance. 6. Manage Nerves Effectively It's natural to feel nervous before a presentation. Instead of letting anxiety overwhelm you, channel that energy into enthusiasm. Listen to motivating music, practice deep breathing, or engage in calming activities to ease your nerves. Remember, the focus should be on your message and how it benefits your audience, not on your own anxiety. 7. Handle Questions with Confidence A successful presentation often leads to questions. Be prepared for them by anticipating potential questions and having confident responses ready. Listen attentively, and if you don't know the answer, commit to following up with a concise and compelling response. Guide your audience towards further resources or information as needed. Conclusion In conclusion, mastering the art of effective presentation is an essential skill that can open doors to countless opportunities. By knowing your audience, structuring your content, using visual aids effectively, making eye contact, rehearsing thoroughly, managing nervousness, and handling questions confidently, you can elevate your presentation game and leave a lasting impact on your audience. Remember that presentation skills are continuously evolving, and seeking feedback after each presentation is key to improvement. Whether you're speaking to a large audience or connecting with a small group, each presentation is a valuable chance to refine your skills and make a meaningful impact on your audience. Highlights [00:00:34] Introduction to the seven tips for presenting ideas effectively. [00:00:47] Tip 1: Know your audience, including understanding their interests, expectations, and knowledge level. [00:01:08] Tip 2: Emphasise the importance of structuring your presentation with a hook, three main points, and a compelling conclusion. [00:02:43] Tip 3: Use visual aids such as slides, charts, and photos to illustrate key points effectively. [00:03:37] Tip 4: Make eye contact with your audience, establish credibility, and engage with them through interactive sessions. [00:04:27] Tip 5: Rehearse your presentation, familiarise yourself with the material, and practice in front of trusted colleagues or small audiences. [00:05:04] Tip 6: Manage nervousness by transforming it into enthusiasm through various techniques like music, deep breathing, and focusing on the message. [00:05:54] Tip 7: Handle questions effectively, be prepared for questions, listen attentively, admit when you don't know the answer, and commit to follow-up. Sometimes athletes get very, very tired. Today we will talk about recovering from exhaustion and the power of napping. Timestamps 01:00 Is it under recovery or over training? Mike Spraklen described it as under-recovery. Marlene prefers this term because it affects your ability to train. You don't have to be fully recovered to train effectively. You feel on "high alert" all the time. 04:00 Six causes of exhaustion noted by Elizabeth Avery, sport nutritionist. - Inadequate sleep - Depression or extreme stress - Acute illness e.g. cold virus - Inadequate nutrition especially carbohydrates - Inadequate hydration - Insufficient dietary iron - can affect vegans, vegetarians and women more. What's the reason? If your training has increased a lot recently, that could be a reason. You should be able to adapt to the new training load. Check your nutrition preferably post training. 06:00 There can be an accumulation of fatigue from session to session. After a heavy training day you may need an active rest day. How to balance your training. Emphasise quality over quantity. 07:45 Adapting to a new training load. Going from 5 x per week to 6x per week. Is a 12% increase in training. Keep to a 5% increase. After a big jump you may feel OK for a day or two, but it will catch up with you. As masters, your cause of exhaustion may not be rowing-related. It all kicks off the same cortisol hormones 10:00 What about naps? Elliza McGrand naps heavily after a heavy training day. She asked the Masters Rowing International group if others had the same outcomes. Listen to your body and respect what it's telling you. Your best recovery method is sleep. People are different with naps - some do it every day. - Lie down and close your eyes. - Set an alarm so you wake up in time. Bodily stimulation comes in through your eyes - rest your nervous system by closing your eyes. 13:00 What is restorative for you? Some people find a daytime nap affects their night time sleep. If you don't tolerate daytime naps, find another thing that rests you. Cooking or gardening, yoga. what do you enjoy? Even walking for 10 minutes has a positive effect to your nervous system. As we age our bodies change - you may need naps now and not in the future. 15:00 Leaden legs can happen after a nap. A good way to revive is to wake up slowly, move slowly, do a bit of stretching, walk gently for a couple of minutes. Even 5 minutes of repetitive activity gives you the same Dopamine hit as a workout. Rowing repetitive cycles are restorative activities to the nervous system. Want easy live streams like this? Criticism of the Government's climate deal with a major investment company is being disputed. BlackRock Capital has launched a $2 billion fund to help New Zealand achieve 100 percent renewable electricity. ACT condemned the announcement saying it amounts to the Government micro-managing energy supply. But BusinessDesk journalist Dileepa Fonseka says this isn't the case. Fonseka says the fund doesn't emphasise one form of energy over another. He adds they could be referring to the target, but this also isn't set by the fund. For a standing broad jump - can you jump your height? 05:30 Boat speed differences at international level is 10-12%. The assumption is that women tend to be weaker But your training affects this. Activating muscles and adding body weight to the handle improves boat speed. 07:00 stability versus mobility. A strong person can row harder because they have a strong heart/lungs engine. Women post menopause have tendon laxity causing instability in joints. Men generally need more mobility as they age. 11:00 Rowing technique basic principles of large to small muscles. A late body swing requires strength. Most of us now a less-segmented stroke. Hold the pressure on the blade in the water. Personal dimensions matter too. 14:00 New rowers are taught a more segmented stroke by Rebecca for specific reasons. 17:00 Try rowing legs only then rowing with straight arms - can you sequence differently? The bent arm catch can stabilise your shoulder. 19:15 Emphasise posture with women as they carry more weight in the chest and so need more shoulder stability. 20:00 immobile athletes can't get a forward swing. Work on this on land. An upright technique like Marcel Hacker - it's possible to apply all your body weight. 23:00 Your ability to adapt technique matters for crew combinations. Try new things as a transitio. Do it gradually. A different coach may use a style that's new to you. Watch for strains /stresses in your body as you change technique.

6 Steps for Dealing with Negative Employees

Enhance.training

Dealing with negative employees quickly is important to stop negativity spreading. Managing a negative team member can be difficult, managing a negative team is disastrous. As a manager, taking action to reduce or removing the negativity is a must. There is a lot you can do quickly. I'm taking your through 6 tried and tested steps for dealing with negative employees quickly and fairly. The first critical step in managing negative employees is not to ignore the problem. It may seem scary or the idea of having potentially confrontational conversations a big stumbling block. Dealing with negative team members is okay when you follow a fair and supportive process while not letting them off the hook. Don't ignore the problem. Second, when taking negative employees in the workplace is to gather examples and evidence (if possible) of their actions and behaviour. Write does in as much detail as possible what they said and did. This moves the conversation away from your opinion of them and actions that have happened are much harder to dismiss.  Third, when you are managing a negative staff member, find out why they are being negative. Don't make assumption. First outline what the issue is, the impact of their actions or behaviour and then ask them to explain what is causing them to be negative. There could be a whole range of reasons from actions or decisions made at work or events in their personal life. Ask to find out what the nitty gritty details are. Fourth, when managing negative team members, set out your expectations. You are the manager and you set the rules. Be clear what you are asking of them, explain why it is important and ask them to meet your expectations.  Fifth, with dealing with negative employees, is to give them a chance to change. No-one finds change easy. Emphasise the impact of not changing on them and the team. Coach, mentor and support them to change.  Finally, when dealing with negative employees and after you have gone through the above five steps and they are not willing to make a change, take formal action.  Formal action is the last resort. If the negative employee is still not meeting your expectations, and their actions are being detrimental to the team and you, then you need to decide if it is worth keeping them in the team or asking them to leave. Start with a Performance Improvement Plan and then move into a formal disciplinary process if needed. Don't let negative employees cause you or the team problems.

Many years ago, my job was to help Australian companies crack the Japanese market.  One of the elements of that job was explaining the Japanese business psyche to the Australian businesspeople targeting Nippon.  As you might imagine this wasn't an easy task, as the mindsets are so different.  White colonisation of Australia started in the late 1700s and the first convicts and settlers arrived into a vast continent, without one permanent structure, bridge, road or port.  Aboriginal life was nomadic.  Hunt everything you can in the area around you, then pack everything up and move to the next location. You didn't need modern infrastructure for that lifestyle.    The consequence has been that the culture built up amongst the early English settlers was very much one of “can do” and optimism that they could tame the heat, droughts, fires, cyclones and floods that are part and parcel of life in Australia.  Six generations ago, my ancestors hacked their way through the bush by hand, to create fields for agriculture and to feed the cattle and sheep. If you couldn't take it, you could always go back to Mother England.   Japan is a also country with no shortage of natural calamities.  Earthquakes trigger fires in cities and wooden houses burn quickly.  They also trigger tsunami and these can wipe out entire towns, as we have seen in 2011. Typhoons and floods destroy crops and building.  Floods and landslides are common.  My super wealthy, famous Japanese friend was walking his dog after heavy rain and a wall suddenly collapsed and killed him.  Japan has volcanos as well and recently the well known Sakurajima volcano has had a major eruption.  This tough environment is part and parcel of Japan and there is no Mother England to retreat to – this is it for the Japanese population.  The mindset of the Japanese in my experience is one of the glass is half-empty and life is difficult.   When I was trying to explain the different attitude between the Aussie glass half full and the Japanese glass half empty approach, I found a useful comparison.  I discovered a graph showing the degrees of business optimism in Australia spread over many years.  Fundamentally the Aussies were positive and optimistic.  Japan has regular tankan surveys of business optimism and fundamentally the Japanese scores are usually negative or very low in terms of positivity.  When you compare the graphs, the results are strikingly different.   Historically, when a person working the land in Australia needed to replace an implement, there would be a six month turn around, as the sailing ship went off to Merry Old England and then sailed back with the replacement.  In the interim, people became innovative and flexible about finding a solution.  It created a “can do” mindset, because there was no choice.  So having these problem solving, positive, “can do” Aussies convincing Japanese buyers to start relying on them was a huge job.  I would show them the graph of how basically for the Japanese the glass was always half-empty and so the Aussies should curb their enthusiasm and approach the sale in a different way.   This is a generalisation and it doesn't make it any less true, but Australia is a country of creating things out of nothing and finding solutions and Japan is more one of caution.  Once you understand that the Japanese are not expecting anything spectacular to happen and are more concerned about things going horribly wrong, then you focus on reducing risk, rather than trumpeting your capability and your successes.  This is where track record, data and “smarts” about doing business in Japan come in.    Japan is a graveyard for MVP (Minimum Viable Product) launches.  The product has to be working extremely well, with no defects or problems. If it has any of these issues, the situation becomes problematic very quickly. Similarly, early adopters in business are a small crowd here.  Basically, in business, nobody wants to go first.  “You trial it, we will watch very, very carefully and if it doesn't blow up, we may take a look at it” is the usual ethos.  Note the word “may”, because even if it goes well, they may not take any action.  You don't get into trouble in a Japanese company for not being a path finder. Steady as she goes is preferred to anything smacking of risk taking.   When things go wrong in Australia, then the suppler gets to work to fix it and if some money needs to change hands as a result, then it gets done and everyone moves forward.  In Japan, you have to fix it, but that isn't where it ends.  You have to head around there to apologise in person, bearing gifts and expect to be lambasted for your poor reliability and shoddy work.  You also have to have forensic detail concerning why this problem occurred in the first place and a detailed, clear plan of making sure it never happens again.  Even then you may be removed as a supplier, especially so if you are not genuinely contrite and authentic in your remorse, for having caused the buyer problems.  Never forget, your buyer has their own buyers. If your problem got shared with their part of the food chain, then you have endangered their trust with their own clients.  This is the most disgraceful and egregious error you can make for any Japanese company who values their reputation and they all value their reputation.   Approach the deal with a solid understanding the Japanese side isn't going to get excited about your widget and that they are world champion sceptics.  Emphasise the track record, safeguards, measurement systems, quality control and the worst case scenario plan of action.  Expect to start small, in order to prove what you say is true.  Keep in mind that apart from you, no one is in a hurry to do the deal and so adjust your expectations accordingly

Hate conflict? Feel overwhelmed when something is out of alignment with a friend, colleague, family member or partner? Wish you had a step-by-step guide to dealing with tricky situations with self-love, clarity and confidence? Then this podcast is for you! When you experience challenges with someone you care about, it affects your whole energy field. The self-loving approach is to take some action. Because this can be daunting, I've created a tool kit to help you approach challenging situations with grace.Top Tips: 1. Emphasise that you're speaking up because you care. It's important to begin communication by letting the other person know that you're speaking up because you care about your relationship with them. Make it clear that you want to remove any obstacles to being close so you can understand each other from a place of love.  2. Be open to being wrong. If you frame things by saying that you're open to being wrong or that you may have misinterpreted something, it helps to put the other person at ease by creating an atmosphere of receptiveness instead of defensiveness.3. Avoid extreme languageI recommend avoiding extreme language like “you never do this” or “I never feel” or “you always say/do this”. Instead, try to use phrases like “I'm curious why” or “I'm just wondering if there might be a different way of approaching this” or “I'd love to hear your side of things”.I hope you find this episode useful. In the English language it's what we do in conversation: “I'm going into town to buy some new red shoes”“because I want to buy some new red shoes, I am going into town” “I'm going in to town because some new red shoes is what I want to buy”. “The proper place in the sentence for the word or group of words that the author desires to make most prominent is usually the end…[and that principle] applies equally to the words of a sentence”."I said to the gym teacher: 'Can you teach me to do the splits?' He said: 'How flexible are you?' I said: 'I can't make Tuesdays.'" I also referred to: “Writing News for TV and Radio”, Bonus Books, 1998==Through these around-5-minute episodes, you can build your confidence and competence with advice on breathing and reading, inflection and projection, the roles played by better scripting and better sitting, mic techniques and voice care tips... with exercises and anecdotes from a career spent in TV and radio studios. It is not a suggestion that anyone should, or be pressured into needing to. We love accents and dialects, and are well aware that how we speak changes over time. The key is: is your voice successfully communicating your message, so it is being understood (and potentially being acted upon) by your target audience? This podcast is London-based and examples are spoken in the RP (Received Pronunciation) / standard-English / BBC English pronunciation, although invariably applicable to other languages, accents and dialects. Train yourself to value learning over approvalValue the process over the end result. Cultivate a sense of purpose. Understand the bigger picture WHY you’re going about things. Celebrate along the way and with others.Emphasise growth over speed. Learning fast isn’t the same as learning well, and learning well sometimes requires allowing time for mistakes.Provide regular opportunities for reflection.Cultivate grit. Your grit defines your perseverance to meet your goals. It is the amount of effort you are willing to put forth to accomplish something and your willingness to keep moving–no matter how difficult things get–when the reward is far away. In order to have a growth mindset, you have to cultivate grit. To develop grit, you must find something that you’re interested in learning and do anything it takes to improve that skill every day. You also have to believe it’s possible to make progress, greatly improve, and succeed–as long as you’re putting in the necessary work.Change your vocabulary- omit four letter words like can’t. Learn from other people’s mistakes.Make a new goal for every goal accomplished.Collaborate with others:) Think realistically.Take ownership over your attitude. As well as how to list yourself on Google and make the most of the lucrative corporate client market using sites like Silver Door and Situ.   He compares the process(es) of setting your properties up on Booking.com and Airbnb, explaining how they differ. Kevin also shares tips and tricks that can be used to get your listings placed high in the results on these extremely important platforms.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Marketing is essential. Even if your SA is the best in the area, if people don´t know about it, you won´t make any money. Create your marketing campaigns with your short and long-term goals in mind. Emphasise what makes you different and better than the competition. Seek out and make full use of ways to get your properties listed above others on the various platforms. In the podcast, Kevin shares several approaches you can use. Use any performance data that is available to see how you are performing against your competitors. Think carefully before activating automatic smart pricing. Keep track of what is going on in your market pricing wise, so you remain competitive while maximising your profits. Old school marketing methods, such as leafleting, still work when done in the right way, so investigate those too. Direct marketing, using email and other messaging formats can be remarkably effective, especially for corporate clients. There are many ways to use social media to market your business. Kevin shares several of them in the podcast. In some areas, Google Ads can be a cost-effective way to sell space in your properties. Facebook Ads work too and are generally cheaper. Having your own website will help you regardless of which marketing techniques you choose to use.   BEST MOMENTS ‘You can have the best SA in the world but if you don't market your property properly you will not make much money.' ‘SA operators get the majority of their bookings from Booking.com. ‘ ‘Once you find out who would be a good person to contact at a company or organisation you can connect with them on LinkedIn.'   VALUABLE RESOURCES The Serviced Accommodation Property Podcast https://propertysoldier.co.uk/ Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert T Kiyosaki Serviced Accommodation Success by Kevin Poneskis   ABOUT THE HOST Your host Kevin Poneskis enjoys public speaking, travelling, exercising, and keeping fit. What we Should Emphasise as the Church in this Time of Crisis - Thabiso Motsepe

THE Leadership Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

Banish Personal Negativity   The boss is the fountain of positivity for the team, like a fountain of youth of lore and legend.  We have to stand tall, no matter what is going on, because people rely on us to lead.   That means reassuring them that the company will be okay or the section will be okay and that we will all get through this current difficulty.  When things look grim, who are the people first out the door?  The low or average performer? No, it is always the best people who jump ship, because they always have options.  The first sign of top performer overboard has everyone else worrying about what did that person know that they don't?  The feeling of insecurity triggers people searching for exits, before it is too late. The boss is the bulwark standing firm against the tide of panic and confusion. What happens however when the boss becomes negative?   We all know what we are supposed to do, what type of role model we should be. But we have human frailties.  We are not robots, devoid of feelings, who can toil around the clock, with perfect consistency. We have our personal health, financial and family issues bubbling along at home, as we belt the crocodiles with our oars from our work canoe.  Once we go dark and negative, we can spiral into depression.  Even such a famous and successful person as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill struggled with what he called the “black dog” of depression.   If we do feel negative and worried, how do we lift ourselves out of the bog, out of the morass sucking us down?  Here are two ideas to form a positive energy force to counteract the oily, rising, roiling, black tide tsunami about to come down upon our heads.   We often use the Value Tower exercise with sales teams to reacquaint them with the strength and value of their offering for buyers.  You can do it individually both for yourself and your business.  The methodology is the same.  For fifteen minutes in serene silence, write down on post it notes, all the value you personally bring to the work.  Write one idea per note.  Once you have done that, place the notes on a white board and start arranging them into columns of like ideas.  Give each column a name.  Have a look at what you have come up with.    Repeat this process for another fifteen minutes. The second time the ideas won't come as quickly, but don't be alarmed, because they will come, as we are now accessing our deeper levels thought process.  Again, take the post it notes and now place them into the appropriate column or create new columns.  You may think you are done, but now we go a third time.  This time we spend just ten minutes going through the same brainstorming method.  Ideas will be fewer but probably a lot deeper this last time.  Attach them to their column.   Having gotten all the ideas out, now start making some judgments about the priorities of ideas in each column.  Start moving notes around, until you can get a hierarchy of value in each column, with the best at the top.  Do this from the point of view of an outside observer, who was making an objective calculation of the value that you bring to the team and the work.  Finally, arrange the top group of items from each column into a single priority list, mimicking a tower and running from top to bottom.   Having done all of that for yourself, do it again for the business.  This time you elevate the scope from you individually to the whole firm point of view. Look at what value the firm provides for the buyers.  Go through the three rounds as before.  When making judgments about priority value provided, arrange the items judged from the point of view of the buyer. Look at it this way, rather than what your company may think is more important.  You will wind up with two magnificent lists of value that you personally bring to the table and where your company is strongly regarded in the market.   Emphasise the company's strengths in your briefings to the team.  Make a point of dwelling on the positives with them.  Reinforce their belief in the righteousness of what you are all doing.  Hammer hard the WHY of what you are all doing.  Re-explain the Vision, the Mission, the Values of the organization. Talk in terms of specifics from your list rather than vague generalities.   This lends more credence to the points you are expressing. Keep repeating this at regular intervals, because people need to hear it constantly for it to register with them.   Also, take your own personal list of your value and re-read it everyday.  Make the time for it, because this is your engine we are talking about and these points are the fuel.  Fill your mind with the positive to counter all the negativity flying around inside your head, the firm and in the market.    Stop watching the daily news cycle, don't read newspapers or allow any negativity into your brain. Spend the saved time reading things which will help your work on leadership, persuasion skills, sales techniques, etc.  Don't spend any more time than necessary around negative people.  Look for the positive people and hang out with them. If you do this, you will right the ship. You will become the beacon of light and hope on the hill.  You are their leader, so lead!

118. How To Develop A Growth Mindset

What does it mean to have a growth mindset? You must believe that you most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. Having this view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Below are 10 strategies to develop a growth mindset. 1. Acknowledge and embrace imperfections. Hiding from your weaknesses means you’ll never overcome them. 2. View challenges as opportunities. Having a growth mindset means relishing opportunities for self-improvement. Learn more about how to fail well. 3. Try different learning tactics. There’s no one-size-fits-all model for learning. What works for one person may not work for you. Learn about learning strategies. 4. Follow the research on brain plasticity. The brain isn’t fixed; the mind shouldn’t be either. 5. Replace the word “failing” with the word “learning.” When you make a mistake or fall short of a goal, you haven’t failed; you’ve learned. 6. Stop seeking approval. When you prioritize approval over learning, you sacrifice your own potential for growth. 7. Value the process over the end result. Intelligent people enjoy the learning process, and don’t mind when it continues beyond an expected time frame. 8. Cultivate a sense of purpose. Research also shows that students with a growth mindset had a greater sense of purpose. Keep the big picture in mind. 9. Celebrate growth with others. If you truly appreciate growth, you’ll want to share your progress with others. 10. Emphasise growth over speed. Learning fast isn’t the same as learning well, and learning well sometimes requires allowing time for mistakes. Having a growth mindset (the belief that you are in control of your own ability, and can learn and improve) is the key to success. Yes, hard work, effort, and persistence are all important, but not as important as having that underlying belief that you are in control of your own destiny.

Welcome to another episode of The Tutor Podcast. In today’s episode, your host Neil Cowmeadow discusses Talent, is it a myth or is it a method. Consider how harnessing the idea of talent can help you to grow your tutoring business and increase your student base. It doesn’t matter if you believe in talent or not, you can use it to your advantage. If the natural talent is there, acknowledge it and amplify it. But if it isn’t, erode the myth, minimise it and destroy it. As tutors, you can use the concept, to better direct, better encourage and better teach. Learn how to start, grow and love your Tutor Business. Talent is considered to be a natural gift, the idea that talented people are more gifted than others. But consider this; Everyone comes into this world on a blank slate, we’re all the same and everyone who is excellent at something was once, never even doing it. It’s the missing of the process that makes talent look like magic. KEY TAKEAWAYS We’re all born helpless, but something happens between birth and excellence, It’s curiosity, fascination, engagement, exploration, encouragement and direction. Talent is just a place marker word for socialisation, fascination, ongoing play and improvement. There’s time spent doing the thing, that’s what really counts. Student One (Believes in natural talent) Emphasise the talent myth, remind them of the background factors, but state that talent alone is not enough. It needs care and nurturing, it needs focus. Remind them of stories of wasted talent and acknowledge their view of the work and attempt to amplify it. Student Two (Disbelief in natural talent) Acknowledge that they have no natural talent and remind them that in the absence of talent they can go along way with hard work and a good teacher. Consider implementing a system to help them learn and remind them that everyone is capable, everyone started somewhere. You will minimise the talent myth incrementally. BEST MOMENTS “If natural talent is more than what most people get, it’s an anomaly” “Talent is shorthand in a way with constant learning, it’s not magic, it’s consistent” “Every master was once a disaster” “Every winner was once a beginner” “Every hero was once a zero” VALUABLE RESOURCES Neil Cowmeadow - Weird Things Guitarists Do www.Neilcowmeadow.com ABOUT THE HOST Neil Cowmeadow is a maverick peripatetic guitar teacher from Telford with over 19 years experience in the business of helping people. 17 Website Design Mistakes That’ll Ruin Your Conversion Rates There are some web design mistakes that may or may not have impact on a website’s success, but there are others that act as conversion killers. They spell death knell for web traffic and make sure your website and its prospects go downhill unless something is done to get rid of these mistakes.  Many people think that conversion rate optimisation is mostly depended on content. The above statement might be true but at the same time you cannot afford to overlook the significance of design as the wrong web design elements can hold your site back from accomplishing great success. You have less than a second to persuade a visitor to stay on your page. In online businesses, creating trust is much harder than in real life as people can’t see your face. All that they can judge you by in that first second how well your website design is. So, there is no doubt about that the design of your website has a huge impact in your conversion rate. There are many website design mistakes that can hurt your conversion rates. In this episode I will walk you through some of the most common mistakes people make while designing their website. Website Design Mistake #1: An Obsolete Website Design If your website is designed five years back, then it’s the time to upgrade the web design with the new design elements. There is always some emerging technology that allows the designers to upgrade the design. For example, you have thousands of visitors and if you are unable to keep them on your page then it’s all for nothing. Trust me, nobody likes a page that seems like has not been updated in five years. Believe it or not, there are so many old websites still live but they are no longer in operation. When your visitors come to an old looking websites, most of them will click away as quickly as possible and moving on to your competitors. Therefore, having a modern website is essential to keep your website conversion alive. You have used a cheap, template website that looks dodgy. failing to instill trust in the consumer or a potential lead is a real concern if your website is sending out the wrong message. Make sure your website has the following attributes that will instill more trust, loyalty and therefore sales.  above all make sure the website looks attractive. Nothing worse than going to an ugly website. You know the ones I am talking about. hard to use, terrible graphics, incredibly slow, totally outdated. Need I go on? Include client testimonial for proof that you are a worthwhile agency. Any associations or organisations you belong to that add credibility should be added to the site. You have to have a physical address and phone number. Nothing looks more suspect than having no direct numbers and only a PO Box. Make sure your branding is consistent. Keep colours the same site wide. Too many different colours will just dilute your brand. Also, avoid the use of too many stock images. Yes they are easy to get BUT people are so so over them. Website Design Mistake #2: No Prominent Call to Action Button Your website definitely has a goal. Whether you want your visitors to sign-up for a mailing list, make a purchase, request a quote, or simply call you, there has to be an objective and you have to make it clear to your visitors what your goal is. In many cases, low conversion rates are a direct outcome of a call to action getting lost in the web design. You need to ensure that your call to action button stands out on the page and makes it easy for the visitors to take the desired action. Website Design Mistake #3: Slow Loading Time Slow page load time kills your website conversions. Nobody wants to wait for a page on a website to load Web users expect a site to load in 2 seconds or less, and they tend to abandon a site that isn’t loaded within 3 seconds. A delay of even one second can reduce your conversions considerably. There are many reasons that contribute to a slow loading time. Among them few common reasons are outlined below- Excessive use of Flash Images are too big Broken Links Too many plugins in use Bad Coding You website loading speed should be as fast as Ferrari. Here are some tips to reduce your page load time- Optimise your images Minimise HTTP requests Utilise server side caching Limit 301 redirects You have decided to go the cheap with your hosting company. What may seem like a great idea now is going to end up being a real pain in the ass. Nothing is worse than your web hosting either continuously going down or being ridiculously slow. Either way it’s a real conversion killer. Spend the money on decent local hosting companies and you will have better site speeds and less downtimes. A slow website WILL AFFECT your Google rankings. Website Design Mistake #4: Overuse of Colours Colour can make or break your website conversion rates. Using too many colours can confuse your visitors. Understanding the colour phycology is essential to choose the right colour for your website. Take a look at some of the colours below and the associated feelings they typically convey: Light Blue: cool, youthful, masculine Dark Blue: trustworthy, stable, mature, calming White: pure, honest, clean Green: comforting, growth, organic, positive go, Pink: youthful, warm, feminine Gray: integrity, neutral, cool, mature Purple: youthful, royal, contemporary, Yellow: emotional, caution, positive Red: excitement, hot, danger, stop, negative, Orange: organic, emotional, positive Black: heavy, serious, death Brown: organic, unpretentious, wholesome Gold: stable, elegant, conservative Remember, colours play a crucial rule in web design. They help to highlight buttons, links and even enhance the visitors overall web experience. Some of the golden rules are outlined below when selecting your website colours: Keep the associated feelings for each color in mind Limit your palette to about 2 to 3 colors only. When in doubt, choose ONE color and then try different shade variations. Website Design Mistake #5: Using Cheesy Stock Images It’s no wonder that images are a fundamental part of website designs and modern readers are obsessed with visual media. You’ve probably heard it many times that they’re worth a thousand words and visual content drives more engagement. Yes you heard it right if the images are relevant, meaningful, high quality and authentic. Using the stock images undermine your credibility. Avoid using the cheesy stock photos as they can send the wrong message to your audience. Every image you use in your website need to have a purpose like pushing the visitors toward the conversion goal. Make sure you only use the meaningful, high quality, and relevant images where possible in your website. Website Design Mistake #6: Poor Navigation It doesn’t matter what you are selling and how much content, images, and video you have. You website navigation play an important role to convert the visitors into customers. Navigation is the only way to reach your products or services after the visitors arriving on your website. If you appropriately executed the right navigation tactics, your visitors should smoothly find the way towards the action you want them to take such as to subscribe or to buy. If your website navigation is confusing, your audience will rapidly take the exit route and probably never come back to your website again. Therefore, your navigation should be easy for the visitors to find what they are looking for. Keep your visitors to the right track by providing noticeable call to action, ensuring links are easily visible and lead to the right pages, and keeping enough breathing space. Website Design Mistake #7: Website Not Being Responsive Human behavior has changed dramatically since the mobile devices entered our lives. People use their smartphones or tablets on the go, in their beds, even in the bathrooms. “The number of people using mobile devices has now well outstripped people on desktop computers, therefore you cannot afford to ignore the responsiveness if you don’t want to lose the potential customers. So, if your website is not responsive on all devices, then you will not be able will not be able to target the tab and mobile users. Responsive design is a must, not a nice “to have” anymore. Website Design Mistake #8: Cluttered Design Too much complexity or clutter makes it tough for the visitors to absorb your marketing message. Excessive use of colours, images and styling makes your website cluttered. This is why it is important to deliver only the most important or necessary information above the fold basically, anything essential for making a decision or taking action, without any clutter. As a rule of thumb, don’t give everything at once to your visitors. Instead, encourage them to browse on your site to learn more about you before trying to sell to them right away. This will not only help them get to know your brand but also they will be more likely to convert as they already spent so much time on your site. Your design is just confusing. This is a real problem as the consumer is going to make up their mind whether they are going to buy from you within a few seconds. Don’t add to their indecision by making your site complicated. Keep your core unique selling point as simple as possible and make sure the user gets this message when they first land on your home page. Like a retail shop if the passing consumer does not like what they see they will buy elsewhere. Simple as that. There is an issue with this. Choosing the right website design agency that knows how to design, based on your market is not so easy. Make sure you view their online portfolio of website work and see if its the right fit.  Website Design Mistake #9: Using Too Many Plugins Plugins helps a website to introduce new features or add new design to the website. Web designers can get so many free plugins from the internet to use in website. But, using too many plugins can increase your site loading time. We’ve  already have talked the impact of slow loading. Too many plugins won’t benefit you either. Certainly, if the plugins are really required to make your site functional then only use them. Sometimes people try to use different things just because they can into their website not because they really need to. Make sure you don’t use any extraneous stuff unless you must need it to keep your page loading times fast. Website Design Mistake #10: Choice Overload Choice overload leads to choice paralysis. If your visitors can’t make the decision, they won’t take your desired action. There are many side-effects that you will experience when your visitors face the dreaded experience of choice overload. Some of the common effects are given below- Customers buy less Customers put less thought into choice Less satisfaction People who are given limited in options will be more to buy than those having too much choice. Therefore, reduce the number of choices your visitors encounter and remove the irrelevant or unnecessary links, ads if you want your visitors to take your desired action. Website Design Mistake #11: Adding Too Many Banners An over aggressive web design with large images and lots of banners makes the website appear as one big advertisement platform, which is a major turnoff for visitors and a clear obstacle for acquiring a high conversion rate. Even though banners are great revenue generator, they could be performing negatively when it comes to conversion. A simple redesign could accomplish the best conversion rates. Here are the few things you can apply to get over with this issue. Limiting the number of banners on a page Reducing the prominence and size of the banners Highlighting relevant content and images Website Design Mistake #12: Unreadable Copy As much as images and videos control the modern content, copy or text still play a huge role in persuading visitors to make a purchase. I have seen so many websites have oddly-shaped fonts and large text blocks that are hard to read. While we are all a fan of customised and beautiful fonts, too much of a good thing is also bad. Here’s how you fix it: Choosing legible font styles. Emphasise important information with bold Write shorter sentences Align text to left, not centre Your website content is far too long. Rambling pages of copy are just going to bore the pants off the reader. In the same way you feel when a person goes on and on about a topic.  You may like them a hell of a lot, but after a while you just switch off. So be on topic with your copy BUT never write just for the sake of it. Snappy, sales on topic copy is what works best for time poor consumers. You write your own copy. Nothing is worse than reading content that has been  put together unprofessionally. Yes you might have been great at English in school but writing effective web copy for your consumer base is an entirely different matter. Make sure that you speak to your web developer about getting a copywriter to at least write the content for your main landing pages. Those pages that you want visitors to land on and buy from. Better web copy means higher conversion rates and guess what….more money for you. Website Design Mistake #13: Not Having a Search Box Websites that fail to include the search box are losing some potential customers those who are looking for specific information or items. They don’t want to use your carefully executed navigational links anymore because we are all busy and don’t have time to search manually. Trust me, your visitors aren’t even a little bit patient. Eventually, they will leave the page. Therefore, enable the search box option in your website to find the targeted items or information in no time. It works better if you have a large inventory. Website Design Mistake # 14: You have not optimised their website for the search engines. This is a real killer and one that many companies and businesses fail to do. They are either to lazy, do not know about it or end up getting mixed up with a really bad SEO company. This is a huge area and one that all businesses should be very concerned about. After all why even bother getting your website all nicely designed with pretty pictures and great copy if it wont appeal to new customers. Why? Because when they type in your product or service offering guess what happens? They find your competitors and not you. A real tragedy. Before you do anything in this SEO space make sure your speak with me and I will guide you through this complicated process. Website Design Mistake # 15: You are not collecting the names and email address of people who have been to your website and used that to market to them. Offer incentives for them to sign up and leave their details. You will find that your database will grow quickly and this is a great marketing opportunity NOT TO BE MISSED. Make sure you do follow through with your emailing campaigns. Website Design Mistake # 16: Where is your sales funnel? Where do consumers go to buy? Many websites look great but lack one thing. The buying process. How to they pick and buy from you without getting lost on the website? How do they make an inquiry and how do they know your received it when they sent it? All these questions ned to be addressed so that once their is a customer on your site they find it super easy to make a purchase. A great looking website that is not making you money is a waste of time. Here are a few tips that will improve your sales process: Make sure there are not too many fields to complete on your order forms. Give them the opportunity of money back or free trials of the product – this will improve the trust factor by miles. Again, as above add testimonials – if you can get video ones even better! Website Design Mistake #17 Important Information Below the Page Fold The page fold is the single most important aspect of the page layout that every designer must take into consideration while designing a website. Visitors decide whether a website is worth their time or not in as little as a few seconds. This means you have very little time to make an impression on your visitors, and this is where the importance of the page fold enters the picture. The golden rule of page fold is simple – all important information must be above the fold. If your important call-to-action buttons or website messages are below the fold, the chances that your visitors will come across the information they are looking for are slim; very few of them will scroll down to check out the information below the fold the very first time they are visiting your site. If this happens, say goodbye to any chance of achieving an acceptable conversion ratio. Bonus Tip: Click on everything... In this episode, Steven Mario Cavallo discusses many aspects of how to grow your sales, how to do business development effectively and efficiently; and also brings you information about cultivating business using the LinkedIn platform – the world’s biggest professional network. Today we focus on the system that drives sales revenue, as this is usually the focus of most businesses’ efforts. Note however, that an increase in sales does not necessarily result in increases in profits, as large volumes often require low margins. Certain market conditions must already exist in order to make a meaningful number of sales: Market must be of a viable size and have buyers with the economic means to purchase Buyers in that market must have a need they want to fulfil with your product or service Buyers must be made aware that your type of product or service exists and how it benefits them Certain conditions must be met by the firm in order to make a meaningful number of sales: Your business must have a reliable supply of the product, or the capacity to produce the service you sell You must have adequate distribution (either physical or virtual) through which to sell (either owned by you or supplied to the market via distributors) Most importantly, your product or service must fit the actual need the market has (i.e. it must effectively solve the problem, or cater to the needs of the buyers in that market). CRITICAL: The buyer must perceive that your good or service provides them with more value than the monetary value they’ve forgone. In this way, a small component or ingredient that saves a business a million dollars a year (or makes them an extra million dollars a year) is WORTH a lot of money to the buyer, even if it costs a few cents to make. (e.g. infrared heater for commercial painting industry). If your buyers perceive the value they get is less than the dollar price of your offering, then either your price is too high or you need to develop your product further (or create a new one that more directly fills their needs). Best practise is to conduct research that gives you a detailed understanding of what buyers actually want, and then go make it to that exact spec. That way, you have an offering that ‘ticks all their boxes’ and appears custom-made for them. LEAD GENERATION From a microeconomics perspective, you must know the meaningful market segments of your buyers Consumer Businesses Government Geographic Demographic (age, income, education) Size Cultural Industry classification (ANZSIC in Australia, NACE in Europe, UKSIC in Britain, NAICS in North America) Understanding the problems from the perspective of each of your segments. Whether you sell to consumers or business, always be certain on how your product or service takes their specific pain away. Remember, each segment has different pains/needs/wants so alter what you tell each so they only hear what is relevant to them. Choose appropriate promotional channels and methods Advertising Trade magazines (companies that supply to specific trades) Television and radio (broad based appeal, FMCG, lowest cost per impression) Newspapers (ability to include more detail in an ad, cut-out coupons) Online (interactive, control costs, able to target niche interests via Facebook ads) Promotion via independent distributors or satellite branches (push initiatives such as holidays for highest performing vendor) Networking events (represent your company where influencers are, promote to industry groups) You must have a soundly designed referral system that generates new customers automatically. There are certain attributes of such a system that are critical, so ensure you engage a firm that understands those principals. If set up correctly, it can be extremely powerful in growing your business as is evidenced in the referral programmes we have set up for clients. Public relations, publicity, events etc. (if your business has notoriety, new invention, provide commentary to current events of controversy) Include an appropriate call to action Toll free number Visit a store or distributor Book a free consult Go to the website Click to initiate chat session Click to buy now (online) In app purchase SALES MANAGEMENT Sales force in the organisational structure Best integrated as part of the marketing function Sales Manager, Advertising Manager, PR Manager, Market Research Manager, Customer Service Manager all report to the Director of Marketing This ensures coherence and that all outward efforts are unified (e.g. nothing worse than a sales rep that is not aware of a current special when quizzed by a customer) Ensures as customer feedback comes back to organisation, it is properly assimilated into product development Most importantly, it gives the organisation a market orientation (i.e. everything is aligned with the needs of the market) Sales territories Ensure the basis by which you assign territories is based on the characteristics of the PEOPLE that comprise the market, i.e. the nature of the buyers. This may not have any correspondence to commonly accepted geographical regions, particularly within a single city. Territorial design is at optimum when all districts equal in both sales potential and the sales reps’ workload. When sales potentials are equal, then it is easier to compare the sales performance of individual reps and it also improves the morale of your sales force. As population density shifts over time, you must adjust the territories to match or those you rely on to create your revenue will have disputes amongst themselves. Overlay all targets from the different segments onto a geographical area to fully understand the total sales potential of that area. Sales reps are very expensive so aim to minimise travel time wherever possible, and train each rep to be able to properly service different types of customers in the one area to avoid duplication of sales routes by multiple reps. This could drastically increase the number of sales per hour. Use computer aided tools that help solve the travelling salesman problem when in drawing the most efficient sales routes. Build incentives and rewards to encourage high sales performance in your staff and avoid disinterest. Ensure you have the proper amount of sales supervision Enough to provide training and assistance Adequate enforcement that company policies are followed Monitoring of performance Provides relationship, encouragement, assurance and recognition for your people out on the road alone, facing rejection after rejection. Formal motivational drivers e.g. team goals, personal goals, enjoyable work culture, job security, belonging to a strong social structure (look forward to coming back to the workplace at the endo fo the day to see their work mates), respect, involvement in regular staff meeting to contribute and feel ‘ownership’ of the work at hand. Improves morale and leads to greater sales performance SALES PROCESS Let’s visit some of the most crucial elements in personal selling as it pertains both the B2C and B2B. I will touch on areas you cannot afford to be weak in as mistakes here result will prevent any chance for sales growth, no matter how fabulous your product or service is. Readiness of your sales staff Are they adequately trained? Knowledge of each customer segment and its specific needs Up to date with all current specials and has copies of all advertisements Guidance of most appropriate offering matches each type of customer Product knowledge Organisational strengths and competitive advantages/disadvantages Sales technique FAQ (overcoming common objections, returns policy, pricing authority) Indoctrination and belief Sales aids Scripts Brochures Financial simulations that prove the financial viability for customers to buy Demonstration stock Video Provide your sales staff and support team with good CRM and tracking systems so they are informed of the customer details, purchase history, delivery status, financial status and case notes of previous interactions with your organisation. Even the high-end versions of off-the-shelf software such as QuickBooks Pro or Reckon Premier or Xero can do this reasonably well, if the creation of your own custom database is not feasible. Consultative Selling Approach  Is indicative of a relationship-based approach to selling Salesperson focuses on the needs of the buyer (not on their own needs) The client has an issue or problem, which is discussed and understood by the salesperson The client is treated as an equal in this consultative process The salesperson then solves the client’s problem as comprehensively as possible by suggesting the products or services that suit the needs of the client (only suggest things that are relevant) If the buyer understands the seller can remove their pain and the proposed product or service is perceived as more valuable than the asking price…only then can their be a sale. The salesman that talks too much and doesn’t actively listen to the customer cannot transfer to that customer a full appreciation of the incredible work done for them, by everyone in your business. The full value of your work can only be understood when the entire picture is revealed. No professional filmmaker would ever allow an incompetent projectionist to obscure two thirds of a cinematic masterpiece from the audience’s view. Group presentations Common when selling to businesses Presentations are often made to a panel of professional buyers, each of whom represent a different functional department within the organisation: e.g. operations, marketing, finance, engineering Ensure the presentation covers the needs (i.e. solves the problems/ticks to boxes) that are unique to each of these departments (i.e. has a specific part for each of the panel members) Make sure every person fully understands how you can solve their problem or satisfy their need Much more effective to answer questions throughout the presentation, rather than withholding them until the end Include quantitative and qualitative proof that will help the panel (or individual) arrive at a positive purchase decision (e.g. calculations using their real numbers to give reliable estimates of savings; or photographs and video or before/after results; and wherever possible, live demonstrations that involve the audience such as torture tests). If you sell to resellers, clearly communicate how your product or service is commercially advantageous to them: The resale-ability of your product and how easy it is for them to sell Opportunity for greater sales volumes, more gross profit on resale and is cheaper for them to acquire, has lower transport costs, can be delivered more quickly, proximity means they need to warehouse as much etc. Emphasise that you provide superb training support, marketing support, easy ordering, easy returns for returned items, favourable credit terms and another other benefits. Responding to objections and problems Common types of objections Related to the customer’s situation or attitude (e.g. loyalty to a current supplier) Related to your product or service (e.g. price, missing features) Related to your company or the salesperson (e.g. company reputation, rep is too young) Receiving objections Anticipate and prepare (be ready for the common concerns) Your sales staff must never avoid objections Analyse their background and cause (to understand them) Prepare sheets for your sales force detailing common objections in each segment, with the appropriate responses Be positive and confident, but never cocky. Your salespeople’s goal is to provide genuine help, not win an argument Your staff should deal with each objection as when it is raised or the buyer will not hear any more of what the salesperson says because their mind will be stuck on the unresolved issue and so block any chance of a sale Objections to Price (3: you’re too expensive, it’s outside my budget, it’s not worth the money) Price and value It is your sales team’s responsibility to ensure the buyer has a full opportunity to examine value rather than the initial price. Very few buyers can buy solely on price (this is possibly only with commodities) Make this your sale team’s mantra: “Value of the total benefit of owning a product/service compared to the total cost of owning it” The total cost of ownership includes the initial price, plus the cost in money, time & inconvenience of operation, service maintenance or repairs, over its useful life. The total benefit of ownership includes both tangible benefits (works correctly, is reliable, durable etc.) and intangible benefits (reputation, vendor support, services, prestige, peace of mind, improved self-image etc.). Ensure your sales force has the ability to properly demonstrate the lifecycle costing comparisons using real-life figures over different time periods that provide the total cost of ownership is less with your product, despite the higher initial price. It is essential you provide them the tools to do this easily and accurately (e.g. a spread sheet or online calculator). I have done this very successfully a number of times where I sold large-ticket equipment to businesses that were hundred of thousands of dollars more expensive than a competitor’s offering. In every case, the product was genuinely better for their operations and I was able to provide them unequivocal mathematic evidence of this, using their actual input variables and to project the resultant savings they would enjoy over the next months and years. What initially looked to them like an overpriced offer ended up becoming a purchase they simply could not do without. Every sale I presided over went through. Building relationships with key customers Your sales staff should be investing in customers at a genuine level and show interest in the personal lives of the buyers they come to know (e.g. remembering birthday, enquiring about kids’ progress etc.) Good account management Integration of sales into the marketing function (keeps sales staff more up to date with market trends, gives buyers a greater sense that your organisation is a market leader) Develop a documented account management plan that includes all customers (don’t allow a haphazard approach to customer care as it will alienate customers and cause sales atrophy) Reduce entry friction wherever possible and build maximum exit barriers for customer growth and retention.       00000084 0000009A 000082E2 000082F3 0028B397 0028B397 00007E63 00007EC0 0028B292 0028B1DB
