What happens to ADHD when the scaffolds of career and parenting fade, and we're left navigating a world that's quieter, slower… and far less structured? This week on Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast, Pete and Nikki are joined by one of the most influential voices in ADHD research and advocacy: Dr. Kathleen Nadeau. An internationally recognized expert and the author of 14 books on ADHD, Kathleen is the founder and director of the Chesapeake Center—one of the largest private ADHD specialty clinics in the U.S. Her career has been defined by breaking new ground for underserved ADHD populations, and today she turns our attention to one of the most overlooked groups of all: older adults.Drawing on extensive research—including interviews with more than 150 individuals for her groundbreaking book Still Distracted After All These Years: Help and Support for Older Adults with ADHD—Kathleen guides us through the realities of aging with ADHD. She brings nuance, humor, and urgency to topics like isolation, structure loss, hormonal shifts, executive dysfunction, and the ADHD tax that shows up in the fine print of Social Security forms and medical claims. We discuss how declining circadian rhythms and deep sleep disruption may connect ADHD to increased dementia risk, and why the U.S. is still lagging behind global standards in using hormone replacement therapy to support cognitive health in aging women with ADHD.But this conversation isn't about despair—it's about reinvention, resilience, and the power of community. Kathleen shares powerful stories of support groups that thrive beyond professional guidance and offers practical strategies for maintaining purpose and mental clarity well into our later years. If you or someone you love is navigating ADHD after 50, this is the episode that finally speaks to that experience—with candor, compassion, and hard-won insight.Links & NotesStill Distracted After All These Years: Help and Support for Older Adults with ADHD by Dr. Kathleen NadeauThe End of Alzheimer's by Dr. Dale Bredesen“The How and Why of Sleep” NIH Video LectureThe Chesapeake CenterThe VillagesSupport the Show on PatreonDig into the podcast Shownotes Database (00:00) - Welcome to Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast (02:51) - Support the Show at patreon.com/theadhdpodcast (03:22) - Introducing Dr. Kathleen Nadeau (04:19) - How Does ADHD Evolve as we Age? A creeping accumulation of stuff that somehow, insidiously, steals not just our physical space, but our mental bandwidth, too. We're drowning in it, folks. Drowning in a sea of forgotten birthday presents, impulse buys gathering dust, and that project – that project – we swore we'd finish… someday. Sound familiar? It should. Because this isn't just about messy desks and overflowing closets. This is about cognitive overload, the subtle but persistent drain on our executive functions that leaves us feeling scattered, overwhelmed, and perpetually behind. On this episode of Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast, Nikki and Pete dive headfirst into decluttering, exploring the peculiar relationship between our stuff and our sanity. They unpack the surprising statistics – the sheer volume of possessions we rarely use, the days of our lives lost searching for misplaced keys – and dissect the emotional baggage that comes with letting go. It's a struggle many of us know all too well: the guilt, the shame, the nagging feeling that we should be more organized.Think of this episode as a cognitive cleanse, a much-needed decluttering of your mental attic. It's a conversation that will resonate with anyone who has ever felt the weight of their possessions, the insidious creep of clutter, and the liberating potential of a clean slate. Join Nikki and Pete as they navigate the messy, often emotional, but ultimately rewarding journey of taking control of your space, your time, and your mind. When you're ready, join us for the 2025 Declutter Challenge!Links & NotesSupport the Show on PatreonDig into the podcast Shownotes Database (00:00) - Welcome to Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast (02:59) - Discord! Dr. Vitz issues a challenge to help us increase efficiency, clarity, and strength. (Originally aired 02-05-2024)
We've reached the end of our 28th season of Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast, and the final part of our 3-part series on organizing and ADHD. In this episode, we discuss the important but often challenging topic of maintaining organization. As Nikki points out, staying perfectly organized is unrealistic if you actually live in and use your space. Things will inevitably get messier over time. However, she emphasizes that re-organizing a space gets easier each time you do it, because you've already made key decisions about what to keep and where things belong. The frustration of seeing a space get cluttered again is normal, but it's important to reframe negative self-talk that makes you want to just give up on organizing altogether. We discuss some red flags that indicate when it's time to dedicate a block of time to tidying up a space again - like when you can no longer find important items, have to re-purchase things you already own, or flat surfaces become covered in clutter. I reflect on the importance of evaluating and revising the "rules" and behaviors around your spaces when you organize. For the system to work long-term, everyone in the household needs a shared understanding of where things belong. We commiserate over the apparently-universal experience of using stairs as a dumping ground for items that need to go to other levels. Finally, we go over some general guidelines for keeping spaces maintained:Doing a quick 10-minute tidy-up whenever you canPurging unused items on a semi-regular basis, like every seasonHaving dedicated spots for items you frequently set down, like a bowl for your wallet and keysConsidering storage space before making new purchasesWhile we may not always follow our own great advice, reflecting on these principles can help you feel more in control of your space and your stuff. Here's to progress, not perfection, as we continue to navigate life with ADHD. (00:00) - Welcome to Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast (03:32) - The Road So Far... This week on the show we dive into the key principles for getting and staying organized when you have ADHD, following up on our conversation last week about decluttering spaces. We really want to drive home that organization is more about function than perfection. The whole point is being able to find what you need when you need it. We advise against buying organizing products without a clear purpose, because let's face it, they can just become more clutter.Making things easy to access and see is super important. We recommend using shelves, racks, and step stools to make the most of your vertical space. Try not to overstuff your bins, so they stay easy to pull out. Creative solutions like hooks and open bins can work wonders for those of us with ADHD.Remember, organizing is an ongoing process. Start small, focus on function over form, and create systems that work with your natural habits and tendencies – that's how you make them stick. As we like to say, for everything, there is a place … and for every place, there is a purpose. Are you tired of chaos and clutter in your home? Do you ever wish someone would come in and make it go away? We have all answered “yes” to those questions because life is busy and seems to require a lot of stuff. But stuff can weigh us down and take up too much of our precious physical, mental, and emotional space. That is why spring cleaning is the first topic that sprang to mind for the Renew for Resilience five-part mini-series. My gal pal, Ashley Stefanko, owner of Home Reimagined, has a great motto: “Less stuff, more life.” She's an amazing professional organizer who I've personally hired. More than once. Because I'm not embarrassed to say I've needed professional help to go through all the stuff. What I love is that she's NOT an unrealistic minimalist, but an advocate for keeping what you need, ditching what you don't, and making it easy and practical for you to find what you're looking for when you need it. I've learned so much from her about making decluttering doable with immediate happy dance results, that I had to share her with you! “I knew that my house was the thing that I couldn't seem to figure out and conquer. I did not realize that it was because I had too much stuff.” –Cass AarssenYou don't need more bins and baskets to declutter your home. Decluttering comes up a LOT in people's goals in FLOW365, and when we talked about plans for the week, three women, who I now refer to as “the Decluttering Ladies” kept coming up. So I knew I should get them on for some tips and tricks! If you are sick of having a mess, check out this conversation with Cass Aarssen and Dana White.Maybe the most important takeaway: decluttering is getting stuff out of your home. Organizing is shuffling stuff from space to space. If you start with organizing or try to do both at the same time, it doesn't work. You need to get rid of stuff first and get down to your clutter threshold. And then we need to get real about clutter. Decluttering isn't a do it and done thing, and it's not a quick process. That doesn't mean it has to be overwhelming. You can grab a trash bag and a donation bin and fill them for 5 minutes. We look at specific ways to tackle your mess.We talk about:Real life gets messy again, but getting things back under control is a quicker process than the originalThe difference between staging (all those pretty Pinterest organizing ideas you've pinned) and real life (even for a professional declutterer and organizer)Finding an organization system that works for you and organizing using the question, “Where would I look for this first?”Choosing the right starting spot (and why a closet may not be it) — the Decluttering Ladies suggest entryway or bedroomRemoving trash from an area, then easy stuff that has a home elsewhere as a way to clear space and energy for stuff that may involve harder decisionsHow to deal with other people's stuff — focus on your stuffBIOCassandra Aarssen is the creator of Clutterbug, a home organizing business which provides education, inspiration, and support to over 500,000 families worldwide through her YouTube channel, podcast, and various other social media platforms. #4: This is a fun episode, because similar to our first few episodes, you are going to get to know us better, but in a fun way! You are also going to get a sneak peak of a small portion of the guest episodes which are starting next week, yay! We are introducing a segment that we will include on our guest episodes: 10 rapid fire questions, and then ending with a very important question that every guest will be asked, “what does a life well lived mean to you?” This is a really great way to dig deep into getting to know more about someone, and we are super excited about it! So, let's go! In this episode we chat about: The guest episode format- with next week being our first guest episode (eeeek! again, so excited!) we go over what that will look like. By the way, we aren't just going to do some rapid fire questions and that's it. We just have this as a segment. We didn't feel as though we needed to dig into a deep conversation with each other (Ger and Shannon) for you to get to know us, especially if you listened to the first few episodes. If you are really dying to get to know us on a deeper level, go back to episode 1. What does a life well lived mean to you? Gerry and Shannon both answer the question that all guests will answer. We are looking forward to hearing what our guests say when this question is asked. Today I give some tips about post-holiday decluttering and talk about my 30-Day Home Organization and Declutter Challenge.

Together, we will discover your negative core belief, change your perception about housework and do some REAL inner work on how to talk to yourself! Grab a pen and let's get started.
#2: So, we have a question for you…. Would you be able to commit to a no-buy year? Well, in this episode, we are going to tell you how we did it, in 2021. We committed to a year of no-buy. We are going to tell you how we did it, give you the low down on why we decided to do it, how we did after a year on the no-buy year lifestyle, what we learned from it, and if we would do it again. In this episode we chat about: Why did we commit to a no-buy year? As minimalists, sure, this isn't unchartered territory, but as humans, we often find ourselves falling back into old routines, of buying things without thought, adding clutter to our home, and forgetting about what is important in life. Spoiler alert- it's not all of the stuff we have. What were our guidelines? Approved spending, and our restrictions. We set those prior to embarking upon the no-buy year. How do we think we did? We did a monthly check-in at the end of every month on YouTube, so that held us accountable. We walk through our challenges and successes. Would we do it again? That is the question we are have been asked a lot lately, and we address it. #3: In this episode, we are going to walk you through our easy 7 step plan for Setting Intentions for the New Year, Rather than New Year's Resolutions. Wow, this sounds like an info-mercial, but it's not. It just so happens to be 7 steps, to setting your intentions for the new year. Hopefully, by the end of this, you will find that you are able to find an area or areas you want to focus on, develop a plan for yourself, set intention, and oftentimes, have a word that guides you for the year. In this episode we chat about: Why not resolutions? January 17th is "Ditch your New Year's Resolution Day” because it is the most common date people abandon their New Year's resolution. There is a reason for that. The most important thing we have learned in the past few years though, is to not put too much pressure on ourselves. We walk through the 7 steps so that you can move into 2022 with a fresh outlook, filled with positivity. If you find yourself getting away from your goal, start again. That is the beautiful thing about this. No pressure. We hope these steps are helpful for you as you set your intentions for the new year. With the right mindset, possibilities are awaiting to unfold. #1: Want to know how it all began for us? This whole Arner Adventures journey? Well, sit back for a few minutes and let us tell you a story about how our minimalist lifestyle began, and hopefully inspire you to life a life without the physical baggage, get a better handle of the emotional baggage, and curate a lifestyle that gets you excited to wake up each day! In this episode we chat about: The biggest question we get- how exactly did we get to where we wanted to sell everything, pick up, and move to the coast, living a minimalist life? Huge success of our business, yet no quality of life. We were not enjoying the fruits of our labor. Poor health- physical and mental health began taking a toll. Burnout, loss of loved ones (human and pets) We were filling our home with stuff in order to fill a void. Mental breakdown, depression. Something had to give. Survival plan- sell our home, stuff, biz, downsized, go to the ocean to heal. People thought we were crazy! We started the Arner Adventures blog to document our journey in our tiny home, and our minimalist lifestyle. Our blog has transitioned into how we live life minimally, but fully. The entire experience helped us focus more on living with more intention. Decided to start “The Arner Adventures Podcast” as a way to not only share our own experience, but to bring on guests who have been a spark in our lives along the way- people who, too, have opted for a life that doesn't fit into conventional structures. Today, the very last day of the challenge, is all about digital clutter. You know, the random files all over your desktop, the emails that have been left unread and stare at you with beading eyes on your phone, the endless amount of photos that clutter up your camera roll and the list goes on.. In Day 04 of the challenge, I want to dive into your patterns. You know, the pieces of you that allow and contribute to clutter building up and to being okay with owning things that don't hold value. There's nothing wrong with this - in fact, it's human nature, but the good news is that it can absolutely be reversed (I'm proof), and in it's place, healthy boundaries around what comes into your home, and why. // In today's episode, the FOURTH day of the Declutter Challenge we uncover: Breaking free from living your life on auto-pilot Recognizing our void filling actions Calling out your patterns that equate to clutter Getting honest with the "why" behind these patterns // If you'd like to take this work pen to paper, and to download the charts that I've created, you can sign up for the challenge right here and get that download for FREE, delivered straight to your inbox. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thecalmcollective/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thecalmcollective/support
Today's challenge is probably the hardest of them all. Tackling the sentimental clutter. You know - the gifts from friends and family, the shirt we wore to "x" concert, the bracelet from an ex that you miss, or the chipped coffee mug that got you through 4 years of college finals. I get it. It's tough. But if I can do it with some of the things that my late father gave me, you can do it, too. // In today's episode, the THIRD day of the Declutter Challenge we uncover: Releasing guilt and shame from letting things go that were gifted Working through your 3 piles to realize what holds value, what could be re-gifted, and what could be donated Turning a negative emotion into a positive by choosing how to recycle the item Reaching deep to discover 5 ways how you'd like your life to feel and look like How decluttering is a deep reprograming exercise that requires rest and integration // If you'd like to take this work pen to paper, and to download the charts that I've created, you can sign up for the challenge right here and get that download for FREE, delivered straight to your inbox. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thecalmcollective/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thecalmcollective/support
Today we're going to dive into specifics - decluttering those tangible items that can at times, feel extremely hard to let go of and to part with. Especially since you've already spent the money. Breathe deep, sister. I want to challenge you to dig deep, to get really honest with yourself about what it is you value, need and actually reach for, and let go of the rest. Make room. Not for more things, but for space. // In today's episode, the SECOND day of the Declutter Challenge we uncover: The weight from holding onto things that don't hold value How to go room by room and face items head on - deciphering if they're worthy of your space The self awareness that comes from doing this decluttering work If you'd like to take this work pen to paper, and to download the charts that I've created, you can sign up for the challenge right here and get that download for FREE, delivered straight to your inbox. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thecalmcollective/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thecalmcollective/support

On today’s episode, Corie is sharing how she created just a little bit of margin in her life so that God could move. She found that there are miracles in the margin if we choose to create it. ---------- Follow Corie on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/corieclark/ Be sure to enter our giveaway for the first week by leaving a review, screenshotting it, and sharing it on your insta stories and tagging @corieclark ---------- Corie had a strong desire to do something more with her life but her life seemed to be in utter chaos and she couldn’t find the time, space, or capacity to really live out her dreams. She joined an online group, started by Jon Acuff, and soon realized things needed to change. She spent an entire month simplifying her life but only spending 15 minutes a day doing it. What she learned was you don’t have to give your life a major makeover. You can simply create margin in each are so that she could actually do the things she was called to do. By making simple changes and creating margin in her life, she was able to start pursuing her dreams, write a book, launch a product line, the Declutter Challenge and now a membership site. As we close out the year and begin a new year, I am so excited to have as my guest Corie Clark, the founder of Corie Clark - Your Life. On Purpose. Corie has been married to her husband Ryan for 21 years, they have three kids (one starts college this year) and is a homeschool mom. Corie gave me a beautiful definition of what it means to her, to thrive. She believes someone is living out and walking in their purpose, not just a job or what they do, but who God has called them to be and to ultimately point people to Jesus. As Corie and her family navigated some pretty difficult years together, she realized that she was addicted to chaos. Through many tears, fears and a lot of unknown, they began to simplify and create margin in their lives. As a result, The Simplicity Project was born, a book to help you win your battle with chaos and clutter so you can live a life of peace and purpose. Would you be ready to take the 6-week Declutter Challenge, to take your LIFE back, sweat a little, and maybe even cry a few times? Corie promises, if you make a step forward and take this challenge, you will feel so good at the end, it all starts with a small step. The more we talked, Corrie shared how she used to be afraid and worried as she was raising her kids that she would end up not knowing who she was when the kids left home? But, God answered her worries with a simple “you need to create margin, and give Me some room.” She began to realize that as she carved out space in several areas of her life, God could work miracles in these margins. We talked about simplifying your health, your home, your finances, and your time, and asks each person to apply 15 minutes to these areas and watch your life begin to feel free. I truly enjoyed my time with Corie, hope each of you has a great start to the New Year and will make a step toward decluttering your life. Here’s my interview with Corie Clark.

One of the things that holds people back from decluttering and embracing a more minimalist lifestyle are hosting big family gatherings. I hear this from readers, listeners, and clients. They want to get rid of the clutter, but there are a lot of unknowns. It can be scary to think that letting go of stuff will make it possible to open your home up to visitors. Will they be comfortable? Will we have everything we need? What happens if more people show up than you had planned for? This is where we found ourselves over the recent Christmas holiday when our gathering went from 2 house guests to 6 house guests (in addition to our family). And this is the recap of how it went…the good, the bad, and the surprising. This episode of Wannabe Minimalist will also help you discover:How less stuff makes it easier to say yesWhat to do when you run out of bath towelsA solution that works in a pinch for additional sleepingHow we managed without enough platesThe answer to if we would do it again*********************Links mentioned in this episode (some may be affiliate links):Get more show notes (including links to all the statistic sources) at wannabeclutterfree.com/133Tidy Home Academy - When you're ready to take your home & life to the next level, Tidy Home Academy will get you there.
