Most of us have a running to-do list of “things” to get done. Not only at work but in our personal lives too. The mental load is real! For me, as someone who works mostly from home, I'm a huge fan of maximising my time and making the most of any trips “out”. If I have a meeting in town, I'll try to run an errand beforehand or go to that special supermarket to pick up that one item I can only get there on the way back home. Sometimes, I put things off my to-do list for longer than I want to admit. And the emotional and mental load of the task ends up draining my energy. Have you ever put something off your to-do list for longer than you want to admit? (Please tell me I'm not alone in this!) For the longest time, I put off (re)organising my kids bedroom and play area. For some reason I was stuck in pinterest paralysis, analysing what the best wardrobe and toy configuration was…that is until I came across Nassim Secci from The Happy Space Co. Even when I discovered her, I secretly stalked her Instagram for the longest time before finally deciding to invest in supporting myself to get the job done…. This week on the podcast, I had the pleasure of interviewing Nassim to hear more about her journey from high flying corporate lawyer to starting her own professional home organising business, right here in Hong Kong where she and her team help busy professionals streamline and organise their physical spaces whilst create calm and ease in their mental spaces. I asked Nassim on the podcast because her story of how she navigated her transition from litigation and international arbitration to reassessing her direction to found her own business, is a wonderful example of how to navigate a career transition for yourself. All of our paths will be different but I hope you enjoy Nassim's candid telling of her journey and how she discovered her path to aligned achievement. In this She Renovates podcast, Bernadette Janson speaks to professional organiser, Virginia Wells about breakthrough ways to improve the quality of your renovation projects through better organisation. When Virginia Wells, a professional organizer, and productivity coach, helps a renovator tackle their chaotic project, she must overcome her client's denial of the problem and create custom storage solutions that are both manageable and efficient. "By having cupboards and storage that is able to be changed and adjustable shelves, you can make it easier to fit in what you want in any given space and create storage solutions that make you smile when you move in." Virginia Wells is a professional organizer located in Canberra and an accredited member of the Institute of Professional Organizers and the Institute for Challenging Disorganization. She enjoys helping people to let go of their stuff so they can live their life more harmoniously. Virginia Wells was faced with the challenge of organizing a space for multiple visitors. Through her research, she discovered Decluttering and Organizing, which she realized was the key to keeping things in order. She was inspired to become a Professional Organizer and help those with Chronic Disorganization and Hoarding Disorder. She learned maintenance steps to keep homes in flow and suggested to her clients to use a Getting Things Done system with an app to keep better track of tasks and calls. Virginia's advice on being mindful of when overwhelm is setting in and training contractors to tidy up has helped many keep their spaces organized and clutter free.” "Organizing the space, how to keep the place, tidy as, between each of the people visiting and what that looks like. So in the decluttering world for just organizing your house, to me they're maintenance steps, to keeps things.Sort of inflow, rather than it becoming, this really big overwhelming, part in your project." -Virginia Wells EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: 00:00 Intro 00:54 Virgina Wells of Well Sorted 02:58 Working with people with hoarding disorder. 04:28 How can renovators stay on top of their projects? 10:53 The David Allen process.. 15:58 How to follow up Trades. 19:28 What makes a home more livable from a productivity point of view? 24:03 Butler's Pantry. 31:39 Are drawers more useful in a kitchen than cupboards? Do you ever feel defeated by the clutter in your life? Where do you even start the decluttering process? The good news is that this week’s guest, Sandra Lane, is a Professional Organiser and Productivity Specialist and she shares with us some useful, practical tips to tackle that clutter - both physical and mental. Our discussion ranges from why we accumulate so much stuff and the negative impact all that stuff can have on our physical and mental wellbeing to the liberating and empowering feeling of taking steps to deal with clutter. Sandra talks us through how to deal with our clutter and what I liked most about this conversation is her practical focus. Not all of us can achieve the minimalist dream i.e. pack away all our earthly belongings into boxes only to liberate the exact thing we need, say a kitchen knife or a shoe, when we need it. Sandra’s approach is a realistic one for busy people in busy households. We also talk about digital clutter, a problem so many of us face these days, and dealing with procrastination which, by the way, is not laziness or poor time management. I hope you enjoy this episode; it is packed (but not cluttered) with so many helpful tips. PS My apologies for the random dog barks that I could not edit out. During the recording of this episode, it was raining heavily and my dog was scared. Better Business Better Life! Helping you live your Ideal Entrepreneurial Life through EOS & Experts
Alicia Butler Pierre is the owner & CEO of Equilibria Inc, an operations management firm that specialises in diagnosing, and designing business infrastructure & processes. With a background in chemical engineering, Alicia started off her career in steel-toed boots at oil refineries & chemical plants. When working as an engineer, she realised how little she understood about business - and just how necessary this understanding was. So she went back to school, completed an MBA & it opened her eyes to a completely new world. In the months of job-searching following her MBA, she was regularly reading articles, books & absorbing information through documentaries (one of her top tips!). What really resonated with her was the concept of individuals all possessing natural skills, talents & abilities. And that through a process of miseducation, we're taught to actually work for someone else, to become a good employee. But we aren't taught on how to capitalise on our natural skills, talents & abilities so that we can CREATE opportunities for ourselves. She thought deeply about what she was naturally good at - organising, and after research & many networking events, she worked as a Professional Organiser, with home-based entrepreneurs being her primary clientele. And it wasn't that they were chronically disorganised people - they just needed systems or processes in place to keep things working & information flowing as seamlessly as possible. So Alicia started to shift her language and promotional pieces from professional organising to business infrastructure. "It's my customers who tell me exactly what they want. It's my job as the business owner to listen, and to act accordingly. And that is the story in a nutshell of how Equilibria came to be, how this thing called business infrastructure came into existence." Now Equilibria has been running for about 17 years & she never imagined it would evolve into what it is today. Hear about her journey & the key insights she has learnt along the way.
