On Feb 3rd 2020 four year old Rawkee Hunt was in an accident and was severely burned on her face and legs. It didn't take long for Rawkee and her mom Megan, to turn such a tragic time into a positive calling on their life… they quickly opted to help other individuals and families affected by burns and trauma.  They have created a community of love and support for people going through the unimaginable; by providing care packages they call RAW boxes, creating inspiring videos, and starting the RAW Challenge which encourages others to share their stories of hardship and triumph. On this episode we speak with Meghan, and her daughter Rawkee, who started the organization R.A.W. (Real Authentic Warriors) . At 5 years old, Rawkee is our cutest and youngest guest to date. Some points we touch on throughout our discussion are: the importance of finding a cause you're personally connected with, remembering your “why”, and what it means to wear your scars beautifully.  R.A.W. It is estimated that around 424,00 children are in the foster care system, on any given day in the United States. For the foster parents that house these kids, they are often told mere hours prior to the child arriving and have little to no time to prepare.  This means, there can be a serious lack of supplies and essentials catered towards that child's specific needs. Who was able to discover this issue and start the fight to fix it? We sat down with Allie Roth in her home in Portland, Oregon and talked all about ‘With Love', the organization Allie founded in 2013.  Allie was working as a school teacher that year when one of her students, April, had disclosed to her that she had lived in the three different foster homes within a few months. When Allie wanted to help provide clothing and school supplies, she realized that outside resources for under-school-age kids were hard to find.   She proceeded on a mission to bridge the gap with a group of friends, and within 6 months, they had provided more than 20 families with vital items they needed for child care.  Today, ‘With Love' supports 120 Portland foster families each month with vital resources such as diapers, blankets, books, and sunscreen. Some topics we cover in this episode include: why it's important to look for the unserved while building a nonprofit, donors as your greatest advocates, and Allie takes us behind the scenes of what being a foster parent is like.  With Love Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/WithLoveOregon  With Love Website - https://www.withloveoregon.org  With Love Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/withloveoregon/?hl=en  Mentioned in the Episode:  The Promise of a Pencil by Adam Braun Thirst by Scott Harrison The Murdock Foundation - https://murdocktrust.org  ------------------------------ Guys! The World Health Organization states that about one in six adults (from age 60 and older) have experienced some form of abuse in community settings (like nursing homes and other long term care facilities) during this past year.  This number has been steadily increasing with the rise of the age of the global population. The elderly can be harmed in many ways including: financially, mentally and physically. So who is taking their time and effort to protect this vulnerable population? We sat down with Carole Herman, founder and president of Foundation Aiding the Elderly (F.A.T.E. for short), at their office in Sacramento, California.  Carole, a successful business woman, founded FATE in 1982.  FATE's mission is to assure elders are treated with care, dignity and the utmost respect during their final years when they can no longer take care of themselves. They do so by providing education, advocacy, tools, help families with reporting abuse, legal action, raising funds, and so much more. On this episode we talk: avoiding elder abuse - how to protect your loved ones, the number one reason behind this neglect, and an untimely death - how losing a loved one propelled Carole into this line of work.  F.A.T.E. Communities, healthcare workers, moms, teenagers, everyone was at a higher risk of struggling to be healthy and feel happy. So how can individuals and communities be lifted up and find this kind of support? We sat down with Dr. Mara Windsor in her home in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Child sex trafficking is the fastest-growing crime in the world with Texas having the second highest reported number of child sex-trafficking cases in the United States. On record over 79,000 young adults and minors have been sex trafficked in Texas.  The Refuge for domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST for short) was founded outside of Austin, Texas by Brooke Crowder in 2013. This nonprofit was made in order to fund the Refuge Ranch. The ranch is a 23 building, $7.5 million residential therapeutic community for girls who range from young children to young adults. Here, the girls receive holistic, trauma informed care and have access to multiple therapeutic services. These children are removed from situations of intense physical and emotional abuse, often in a quick manner, resulting in the child having little to no possessions of their own and a huge lack of control and power over their situation. Who knows the hardships of these children and is attempting to meet their needs? Dee Robinson (founder) and Wendi LeMoine (executive director) welcomed us to the office of Braveheart Children in Need in Baton Rouge Louisiana. Braveheart's goal is to provide comfort and some sense of control to children who are pulled out of their homes and into the foster care system.  They do this by supplying brand new backpacks filled with: toys, hygiene products, school supplies, stuffed animals and more, to the social work agencies responsible for finding new homes for the foster children. Each backpack is carefully designed and filled specifically for each gender and age group from kindergarteners to teenagers.  In this episode we hear about the hardships these children endure, yet how Braveheart is working tirelessly to uplift them during the unimaginable. How do we break the poverty cycle? Impoverished households can oftentimes have no father figure, a parent who works multiple jobs, lack of support at home with education, and a host of other issues. Children within these households can be exposed to and affected by situations like drugs, violence, teen pregnancy, and the absence of positive role models.  It becomes extremely difficult to set children up for higher educational opportunities, strong values, morals, and well paying jobs. When confronted with these circumstances where can families go for help? The Pearson Foundation in Pearl Mississippi was created specifically to help kids within these difficult lifestyles. We were able to visit the foundation and speak with the executive director, Jarvis Ward.  The Pearson Foundation provides many services for children in elementary school up through their high school years. Many of us could find ourselves in a similar position one day, and it’s encouraging to know that there are places to turn for help.  McKemie Place is the only emergency overnight shelter for unaccompanied women in Southwest Alabama. The shelter currently provides a place for up to 50 women to temporarily stay. They provide three meals a day for their guests, and also put residents on a 90 day action plan. While working with a case manager the women work towards goals tailored to each individual (encouraging employment and lifestyle choices that will enable the guests to be self sufficient long term).  During our tour of the facility, we learned that McKemie Place is so much more than a typical homeless shelter; they have a beautiful campus that is clean, homey, and works tirelessly to get women back up on their feet. From going homeless on purpose, to the importance of setting boundaries, to Matt’s thoughts on why being intentional with your inner circle is so important; our discussion with him is honest and real.  We dive into how his mission has transformed from: “pay what you can” cafes, to mobile showers and laundry for people experiencing homelessness, and to what it is now. Today, Ransom Ministries is a Christian based  job readiness and life skills training course that helps participants move out of dependency and into fulfilling careers.  Often times these participants are formerly incarcerated or homeless individuals. They train through mock interviews, resume workshops, trauma informed care, on-the-job training, mentorship and more. It all started with a father bringing his son to the North’s house and asking if they would help his son read. Not long after Presencia (Spanish for being present) was born.  Presencia is an after school tutoring and mentorship program that views the kids involved, not just as participants, but as family.
