When the Trump administration's policy of separating families at the country's borders was announced, opposition from the public and the legal community was swift. The outcry and judicial decisions led to a reversal of the administration's stated policy. But detention and family separation have a long history in this country, history professor Ana Raquel Minian says. Minian, who immigrated from Mexico to the United States right before the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, has made an academic career studying immigration, incarceration and detention. As a young adult, Minian followed the news of Guantanamo Bay Naval Base being used to detain people who might be connected to those attacks. But in researching their new book, In the Shadow of Liberty: The Invisible History of Immigrant Detention in the United States, Minian discovered the base was first used as a detention center under President George H.W. Bush to hold Haitian refugees. Minian uses the personal experiences of four immigrants to walk readers through the history of immigrant detention in the United States: Fu Chi Hao, a Chinese Christian attempting to escape the Boxer Rebellion in 1901; Holocaust survivor Ellen Knauff, a war bride of an American GI who arrived at Ellis Island in 1948; Gerardo Mansur, a Cuban who joined the Mariel boat lift in 1979; and Fernando Arredondo, a Guatamalan asylum seeker who was separated from his daughter by border officials in 2018. In this episode of The Modern Law Library, Minian shares details of these stories with the ABA Journal's Lee Rawles. They also discuss the shifting motivations behind changes in the immigration system, parole versus detention, and how attorneys can help immigrants currently in detention.

This is the most honest conversation to occur on Wine Talks. Tracy is unabashed at exploring her lifestyle and her path to be an exectutive with a public wine company. This was such a refreshing interview that we left the door open to regroup down the road as the landscape in the wine sector shifts towards an inclusionary perspective. The wine sector has been dominated by males both in ancient and modern times. Certainly the patriarchal societies such as the Italian and French lent themselves to the new world of wine; North and South America, Australia and more but inroads are being made to level the playing field for women, people of color and members of the LGBTQ community. You will be taken by Tracey's knowledge of not only wine but business and life. As her perspective on life is shaped by not only her sexuality, but also being a mother to an daughter of color and a Guatamalan son. I think you will find her personality intriguing and insightful. Have a listen to Tracey Mason, Senior Vice President to Vintage Wine Estates.

In this week's episode, both our storytellers explore the divisions and limits that influence how we understand and operate in the world and in science. Part 1: César Nufio's childhood experience as a Guatamalan immigrant shapes his life in science. Part 2: Seeking acceptance as a child of Kurdish immigrants in Denmark, Cansu Karabiyik decides to become a scientist. César Nufio is a scientist and educator who is passionate about understanding the natural world and working to increase diversity and inclusion in the sciences. He is currently a multimedia content developer at HHMI's BioInteractive where he works with artists, educators, filmmakers, and scientists to help engage and inspire students. Previously, he taught tropical biology courses for the Organization for Tropical Studies and explored the effect of climate change on insects in the Rocky Mountains while working at the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History. Coming to this country as an undocumented child and experiencing the generosity given by so many during his journey has impacted his commitment to giving back and his Latin American identity. Cansu Karabiyik is a neuroscientist at Columbia University. She was born in Denmark to Kurdish immigrants. In 2013, she moved to California for her studies in Biomedical Science and decided to never go back. She moved instead to Portugal to conduct the research for her Master thesis focusing on neuroprotection during stroke. In 2021, she completed her PhD at University of Cambridge in the UK focusing on neurodegeneration and has since been in NYC, where she spends her days in the lab researching molecular mechanisms of neuropsychiatric diseases and her evenings doing comedy across the city. Today, I'm chatting with George Sisneros, a 55-year old who has been taking the personal finance "Money Twitter" scene by storm over the past few months. George has swam with sharks in Belize & smoked a Cuban cigar in Havana. He's explored ancient Mayan ruins & grabbed an alligator by the tail. He's jumped out of an airplane and ran a marathon. He's climbed and spent the night on Volcán Acatenango, the 3rd highest peak in Central America. He's summited Capitol Peak, which is “arguably the most difficult of the 58 Colorado 14ers.” He's played in the World Series of Poker in Vegas. And he's a bilingual Latino from the States who is now a Christian Missionary living in a small Guatamalan village, where he is happily married with 8 kids, and has built a school and helped establish a safe house for severely malnourished babies under 1-year-old. And to top it off, he also does high-level coaching for successful entrepreneurs and executives & gives them “one-on-one accountability.” This is a highly personalized, very involved level of coaching, so he only works with 5 clients max at any given time. The top of his website sums up his mission quite neatly: "My passion is helping you get your time back so you can summit more of life's mountains.” So you can see why I thought George sounded like JUST the kind of person I wanted to chat with on the top of The Journey to Freedom. In today's show we talk about everything from wrangling alligators, to launching a school and clinic in Guatamala. We discuss his No Spend Year and what the holidays look like with no presents. We discuss how to nurture a long lasting marriage, his new deep dive into the world of investing, and how to live a more intentional life. Welcome to PERSPECTIVE, a podcast for wedding creatives where we sit down, often with a special guest and talk about our many years of experience in the wedding industry so that you can learn from us and grow your own wedding business.A few weeks ago we were contacted by Experience Designer and Consultant Julie Comfort, pitching herself as a potential guest on the podcast due to her unique perspective on the wedding industry.I sat reading her initial email thinking to myself whether I know what Experience Design actually was and intrigue took hold.As Julie explained “Experience design is a fairly new but growing field that takes a holistic, human-centred approach to design, part of a much bigger societal shift that’s guiding us towards a future of events designed around people, not things. With only a few emails back and forth we most certainly had found a guest we wanted to learn more from, especially now that we're all rethinking what's truly "essential," we wanted to hear if Julie foresees any shifts in weddings toward more meaning and experience.Of course , if you haven’t heard of Julie comfort before, that’s OK! Paying it Forward to Children Around the World!Children truly are our future. And when we can help children all over the world, you just have to believe, the world will be a much better place. That's what Ron Carter is doing with his small team at Children Incorporated. And that's the conversation we sharing today. Meet our Feature GuestAt a time when people often feel helpless in a world where they want to make a difference, Children Incorporated is now teaming up with an old friend to launch a new effort intended to bring thousands of new donors into the fold – to empower people to do something that actually changes the world for the better. Twenty years ago, Dr. Richard Carlson’s best-selling book Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff forged a legacy that is carried on by Dr. Carlson’s widow, Kristine, selling 25 million copies and magnifying the global movement towards mindfulness and self-care. It was the book’s mention of Children Incorporated as the Carlsons’ preferred charity that was, in the words of current Director of Development Shelley Callahan, “one of the most meaningful things to happen to our organization.” This year, in conjunction with the book’s 20th anniversary re-publication, Kristine Carlson and Children’s Incorporated I have teamed up to find 2000 new donors, with a generous donation from the Richard Carlson Memorial Foundation supporting matching funds. Since sponsorships are the lifeblood of Children Incorporated’s work, the infusion of so many new benefactors is likely to have a profound and lasting impact. This latest effort is just one of many in support of Children Incorporated’s global mission to confront childhood poverty through direct intervention: getting the donated money, goods, and services directly to the children and families who need them most. Reaching over 250,000 children in 23 countries over the last few decades, Children Incorporated currently supports over 300 programs and projects, from building schools in Bolivia, to clean water initiatives in India, to inner-city projects in Detroit and Washington DC, to “backpack feeding” Appalachian kids who might not otherwise have anything to eat on the weekends. With digital media efforts like the “On the Road” web series that documents Children Incorporated’s monumental efforts, the organization is continuing to lead the way in terms of global awareness of poverty and finding innovative and impactful solutions that benefit the most impoverished communities of the world, one deserving child at a time. For over 50 years, Children Incorporated has been a pioneer in the field of international charity, connecting individual donors to specific children in need both in the United States and around the world. The story of Children Incorporated, from humble beginnings of a determined American traveler connecting her wealthy friends with Guatamalan orphans, to one of the most respected and productive charities around, is one that is worthy of attention and discussion, and a way of bringing power and possibility to life in a too-often uncertain and disheartening world.
