This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum interview Atlanta’s former mayor–and now GA gubernatorial candidate–Keisha Lance Bottoms. And we’ll respond to some of your criticism… Last week we did an episode about migrant rights that some of y’all pushed back on in the comments. Some challenged the notion that we ought to stand alongside communities who, according to some, do not stand alongside the Black community. Moreover, we hear your criticism that y’all want to know what to do and not necessarily just a lecture. We’re here for this back-and-forth, let’s talk. Gubernatorial candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms tells us what she learned from Stacey Abrams near-miss in Georgia, offers a thought or two on the situation at FAMU, and opens up about her strategy to win rural voters. It’s not all about the ATL y’all! NLP will be joining the State of the People tour next Saturday 5/31 in Jackson Mississippi! Anyone remember the Mayflies USA? I got a promo copy of "Summertown" in 1998 and I fell in love with the album. They went on a massive hiatus but got together to record their latest album "Kickless Kids" set for release in May 2025. When I got a press release about this, I immediately asked if they could come on the show to talk about their career, the new album, and albums (and some songs) important to them.We talk with Matt McMichaels and Adam Price about the new album but also talk about Bob Mould, power pop (and finally embracing that genre tag), Jackson Mississippi, trying to emulate the Replacements (the self sabotage aspect), getting produced by Mitch Easter and Chris Stamey, Keith Richard, Steely Dan, and more.If you're not a fan yet, I think you will be after this.Check out The Mayflies USA at:  https://www.facebook.com/themayfliesusaCheck out other episodes at RecordsRevisitedPodcast.com or one all your favorite podcast providers like Apple Podcasts, Castbox, iHeartMedia, and Spotify. JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI - MAYOR LUMUMBA CLAIMS BEING PURSUED BY FBI IS NOT ANYTHING FOREIGN TO HIM

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba used his most recent episode of “Ask Antar” to thank supporters and reassure residents the city of Jackson is moving forward even as he faces multiple corruption charges. In October, a federal grand jury indicted Lumumba, Ward Six Councilman Aaron Banks, and Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens in connection with a bribery scheme to bring a convention center hotel to downtown Jackson. The comments mark only the second time the mayor has discussed the indictment since it was unsealed on November 7. “People have been keeping me lifted up... sending me daily text messages, prayers, Scriptures, lifting up my family, not only in Jackson but around the country,” he said. “These are the moments that you're taught who really are your friends and who support you, and I've been grateful for that support.” Lumumba, dressed in a gray sweater and a black button-up shirt, reiterated statements he made outside of the Thad Cochran Federal Courthouse last month, that he was going to continue to fight the charges and work for residents. “I don't want anyone to be fearful for that,” he said. “I'm going to move around. I'm not going to walk around as if I'm guilty of something I am not.” He pointed to the fact that after his arraignment, he went to Tampa, Florida, for the National League of Cities Centennial Summit “to seek solutions for the city” and to “appear for multiple speaking engagements.” “[I want] our residents to know that, as I've said, ‘I'm not only innocent, but I'm going to fight those charges and I'll let my attorneys handle that,'” he said. “I owe them a responsibility, and so I'm going to make certain I maintain and adhere to that responsibility.” “We're still working, we're still meeting, we're still seeking solutions to the problems that face Jackson residents every day... I'm grateful to have a team around me that can focus in.” Lumumba is charged with conspiracy, federal program bribery, the use of an interstate facility in aid of racketeering, honest services wire fraud, and money laundering after he allegedly accepted $50,000 in bribes to benefit developers wanting to bring a convention center hotel to Jackson. The developers, who claimed to be with Facility Solutions Team out of Hendersonville, Tennessee, turned out to be confidential human sources with the FBI. The mayor told Director of Communications Melissa Faith Payne during the roughly 30-minute episode that this was not the first time he's been investigated by the agency, and that he's dealt with the FBI “my entire life.” “We were often surveilled. To this day, I actually have FOIA documents to demonstrate that... I've seen my high school pictures in FBI documents, [pictures from] my mother's funeral in FBI documents, details on my parents' relationship in FBI documents,” he said. “Unfortunately, it's not uncommon to me... It's not something I want for my children. I really have to question what family, or anybody, would justify that level of scrutiny, that level of investment, to follow a family that long,” he continued. “It is not something that is foreign territory to me.” Lumumba is in his second term as Jackson's mayor. He was first elected in 2017 and re-elected by a landslide in 2021. He is the son of the late Nubia and Chokwe Lumumba, a civil rights attorney and activist who died in 2014, about eight months into his first and only term in office.

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba responded Monday to claims that he could be one of the three remaining unidentified co-conspirators involved in a bribery scheme that has brought down one city councilwoman. “With respect to any allegations or speculation on that, I have never conspired with anyone to commit a crime,” he said. “There may be a time and place where I will expound on that at an appropriate moment, but at this point in time, that's all I have to represent.” Lumumba spoke to reporters at a media briefing on Monday, where he responded to questions regarding the recent bill of information released on Sherik Marve' Smith. The Hinds County businessman pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit bribery last week in U.S. District Court in connection with a scheme to seek city officials' support for a convention center hotel project. Smith was the second domino to fall in the investigation. In August, former Ward 2 Councilwoman Angelique Lee also pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge after she took nearly $20,000 in cash and gifts from FBI sources posing as developers. According to the bill of information, there are at least three more unindicted, unnamed co-conspirators, including two elected city officials, one of whom received a $10,000 contribution to his re-election campaign to direct a city employee to move the date developers could request to the city's request for qualifications. The mayor is the only elected official in the city who can direct city employees, per state statute. The council can direct the Clerk of the Council and clerk staffers. When asked if he was associated with Smith, Lumumba said he had met him “a couple of times.” “I don't know what associated means, but, once again, I would direct anyone to those who are hosting that particular investigation,” he said, referring to the reporter's question. When pressed, Lumumba would not say whether he received a $10,000 campaign donation, reiterating his earlier comments. He also would not answer whether he is being investigated by the FBI. “It doesn't matter how many questions or the variation of the question, my response is going to be the same, and that is, quite simply, I have never conspired with anyone to commit a crime,” he said. Meanwhile, the mayor says he has not filed an updated campaign finance report since 2022. Court records show the bribes were paid between October 2023 and May 2024.

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Months after a judge sentenced a Florence man to life in prison for killing two people near Hal's St. Paddy's Parade, his girlfriend has decided to plead guilty for her role in the aftermath that followed. Jenny Lukens took a plea deal this week, admitting to hindering prosecution. In court documents obtained by 3 On Your Side, Lukens said she intentionally misled police to help her boyfriend -- Jordan Cummins -- avoid conviction. She admitted to leaving the scene of the killing before police arrived, and embellished Cummins' story to investigators, hoping it would help him. In June, a Hinds County jury found Cummins guilty on two counts of first-degree murder for killing 27-year-old Joshua Spann and 23-year-old Auden Simpkins. The shooting took place on Jefferson Street in Jackson, a few blocks from the parade route for the Hal's St. Paddy's Parade in March 2023. Lukens' deal means she won't serve any jail time, agreeing to a 14-year sentence with 10 of those years suspended, according to prosecutors. She'll serve the remaining four years on house arrest.

A Belhaven neighborhood institution is set to close it's doors at the end of September and relocate to Madison county. Below is the full statement from Lou's Full-Serv As we approach our 10 year anniversary we've been reflecting on how grateful we have been for the support and love you all have shown us in supporting our dreams over this last decade. It has been our pleasure to serve the Belhaven area for the last 10 years and this spot will always hold a piece of our hearts. However, recent years have provided obstacles in this Jackson location that are proving more difficult to hurdle as time goes on. It is with much consideration that we are announcing our last day in Jackson will be Saturday, September 28. As many of you know we have a Ridgeland location called Lou's Southern Sandwich Co. We love this location and see it as having the very best potential to continue the Lou's Full-Serv brand. To accomplish this we would like to pivot our focus back to one restaurant and have made the decision to merge our two businesses. Lou's Southern Sandwich Co. will also be closing briefly beginning September 28 and will reopen on the second week of October as Lou's Full-Serv. This restaurant will be operating as the Lou's Full-Serv you have all come to know and love over the years with the addition of your favorite southern sandwich menu items. We are so excited for this change and cannot wait to bring our passion for fine dining southern cuisine to the Madison County area. We hope you will come see us off in Jackson with a bang and welcome us into Ridgeland the same way! Thank you again for your continued support and we will be keeping you up to date as we make all of these exciting changes. Stay tuned and #EatAtLous

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - In the past two weeks, Jackson police have responded to three deadly domestic violence cases. Reynaldo Resendiz Mendoza is still on the run wanted for shooting and killing his sister 30-year-old Susana Resendiz. Her body was found Monday at the OYO Townhouse Inn and Suites on Beasley Road. Twenty-four-year-old Anthony Hawkins was arrested Thursday and charged with the stabbing death of 23-year-old Deandre McDonald. He was killed Thursday on West McDowell Road. According to police, the two were in a relationship. On September 4th, 63-year-old Louise Banks-Tornes was found brutally beaten to death at her home on Carver Street. Her son, 42-year-old Jerry Banks, was accused of the crime. He fled the scene and was captured and arrested three days later. “As many as half of the homicides that we worked this entire year have been domestic disputes, the result of domestic disputes,” said JPD Detective Tommie Brown. “People who know each other, family members, acquaintances, people in relationships.” “You have friends out here you know [are] killing each other, but when we talk about family killing each other, that's a very sensitive combination right there,” said Deputy Chief of Investigations Sequerna Banks. “So when I go out to these scenes, as a mother, I'm saddened.” According to Dr. Christine Bridges, with the Haven House Family Shelter, domestic violence cases in the state have risen about 70 percent in the past two years.

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - The City of Jackson installed new parking meters downtown earlier this year. According to Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, the kiosks are meant to produce revenue for the capital city, but some people are not fans of the new system. “I'm not in favor of the parking industry downtown. I think the city could look at other alternatives for generating revenue,” said Barry Howard, who works downtown. Currently, it costs a dollar an hour to park downtown. You can pay at the meter with coins or a card or from your phone through text or the parking app website. Most visitors used to park downtown for free, but Lumumba says that was never the intention, and this system keeps Jackson in line with other big cities. He believes a dollar isn't asking for much. “We're talking about a dollar. If you go to any city near our size, you're looking at a minimum of $5,” Lumumba said. For some people, the cost is not the main concern. It's the paying process and requirements. Howard said, “I think the whole process is a little confusing, you know, in terms of what you actually do to pay? Is there a meter? What are the penalties for not paying? I don't think the average person quite understands the process.” According to Lumumba, the meters are also meant to be more convenient by allowing you to pay from your phone. However, it's not that simple for everyone. Emily Cross, who works downtown, said, “When you go to try to extend it, it doesn't let you extend it. It says, ‘Oh, you can go to two hours,' but then once you click two hours, it says, ‘Oh, this is not available.' So, you just have to go and do a whole other session.” Paying for parking is common in large cities, and Lumumba wants Jackson residents to understand the benefits the additional revenue could bring to the city. Lumumba said, “When you go to Atlanta, when you go to Houston, if you don't understand the meter, then you find time to figure it out, so you make certain that you don't get a ticket.”

IS THE WORLDS LARGEST BUC-EES COMING TO METROCENTER MALL SITE IN JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI?

Breaking News: Is Largely Abandoned Jackson, MS Mall Set to Become World's Largest Buc-ee's Convenience Store? Jackson, MS - In a move that has stunned the community and sent shockwaves through the business world, the mostly abandoned Metro Center Mall is set to be transformed into the world's largest Buc-ee's convenience store. This unprecedented development comes after years of public interest and outcry from the people of Jackson, MS, who have long been begging and circulating rumors for a local Buc-ee's location. The massive undertaking will see the once bustling, now eerily quiet shopping center morph into a sprawling paradise for convenience store aficionados. "It's a dream come true," said lifelong Mississippi resident Buck Alman. "We've been wanting a Buc-ee's here for years, and now we're getting one that's bigger than we could have ever imagined!" The Buc-ee's mega-store, which will occupy every inch of the former mall, is expected to offer everything from their iconic beaver nuggets and clean restrooms to an endless array of snacks, apparel, and unique gifts. Enthusiasts predict that the sheer scale of the store will attract tourists from all over the country, further boosting Jackson's profile. However, not everyone is thrilled with the announcement. Local business owners are bracing for impact, fearing that the behemoth Buc-ee's could overshadow their establishments. "How can we compete with a place that sells everything under the sun?" lamented Claudette Brown, owner of a small downtown business. "We might as well pack up and move into the Buc-ee's ourselves!" Indeed, some analysts predict that the new Buc-ee's could drive many local businesses out of operation, leading to an economic monoculture dominated by the convenience store giant. In a particularly bold prediction, some even speculate that one day, all of Hwy 80 from I-220 to Hwy 18/Robinson Street will be one continuous Buc-ee's, seamlessly blending shopping, dining, and fuel services into a single, all-encompassing experience. In response to these concerns, Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba has adopted a unique stance. "If the city and my personal finances are properly incentivized, I am prepared to rename Jackson to 'Buc-eeville'," he announced at a recent press conference. "This rebranding will reflect our new identity as the home of the world's largest Buc-ee's and signify our commitment to embracing this monumental change." The mayor's announcement has sparked a mix of excitement and controversy. While some residents are eager to embrace Buc-eeville and its potential economic benefits, others are wary of losing the city's unique charm and identity. As the transformation of Metro Center Mall begins, one thing is certain: Jackson, or perhaps soon Buc-eeville, is on the brink of an unprecedented era. Whether this development will be a boom or a bust remains to be seen, but for now, all eyes are on the beaver as it prepares to take over the heart of Jackson.
