I wanted to share some recent discoveries I've made about what makes this "odd" content, that is randomly available out there, so invaluable. Know that it is was captured without Marvin's authorization. On his 1983 Sexual Healing Tour he never agreed to have one of his performances recorded for our commercial consumption. WE ARE OUR RESOURCE, and the way we show up for ourselves is via our vote! So, if you're like me, you hear people "in the know" pontificating on the significance of this new law or that new law and the importance and link to the 2022 elections. AND if you're anything like me, you find it a bit annoying that these know-it-alls don't take the time COMPLETELY break down THAT significance and link to the 2022 elections. If you're anything like me, you may think who gives a "F" about the 2022 elections, or midterm elections. BUT!! JUST tonight, I simply googled the term what happens in the 2022 elections and BINGO, it's really clear, REALLY quickly what all the fuss is about. PEOPLE, in 2022 78% of the state governors are up for election. ALL of the 435 House of Representatives seats are up for election and 34 Senate seats are up for election. The Little Known Connection of Cicely Tyson's Film Sounder and Marvin Gaye's Soundtrack/Score for Trouble Man Lo and behold, just randomly on the night of January 27th I began capturing my thoughts for the continuation of conversation on Marvin Gaye's work on the soundtrack and score for the 1972 film Trouble Man. No More Excuses - Let's Discuss flexing our voting muscle: District Attorneys & Judges, did you know YOU have the say so? I watched Andre Hill's Memorial Service today and it was words from Reverend Al Sharpton: NO MORE EXCUSES, that REALLY turned on a light bulb for me, reinforcing a very empowering first step I already took in November 2020 to flex a bit of my voting muscle; giving MY SAY SO on whether the judges that preside in my county meet MY expectations for continuing to do that job.  Tonight, upon hearing the "fake news" that the white officer in Kenosha was not an attempted murderer...I did a simple google: "do people vote for district attorneys?" The answer, YES. You get the right to vote district attorneys in to 4 year terms, and you give that vote during the midterm elections that usually occur in May. Every year at least 1/3 of DAs are up for re-election. This May let's QUIT doing like I've miseducated-ly done, every time I receive an election ballot outside of the 4 year presidential elections, and this is to just toss it aside.  NO MORE OF ACCEPTING THEIR EXCUSES to try to deny, cover up and impede JUSTICE from being exercised. We're finally to the album "When I'm Alone I Cry," There are many things to learn about Marvin Gaye as the artist thru this album and the many unreleased songs we've discovered together thru this podcast series so far, each shared as music videos on the "Marvin Gaye & Podcast" YouTube Channel. We now have a 44 song playlist titled "Marvin Gaye Jazz Songs," the bulk of them unreleased from the decade of the sixties. The majority of these songs have been discovered by me, only this year. And there is something I've learned about Marvin. Hi Friends, in light of continued, ongoing situations related to my last episode, I felt the need to provide some mainline, extremely potent LOVING perspective on these times from Marvin Gaye. The constant "breaking news" of this year can begin to feel overwhelming. I want to offer a slight glimmer of hope and encouragement. In this episode I share some details of recent knowledge I have gained of specific "black experience in America" incidents from the last century. These details help to explain the extent to which we (at least) are not living in the same world that was the complete reality of Marvin Gaye and his entire generation (and all previous generations) of our culture. Marvin Gaye's reality, and that of everyone of our culture alive during his short life, was a far more extreme measure of the struggles we are protesting against, this year particularly. And that being the case, that during his time, his life was a measure more unprotected, and undervalued based on the color of his skin...it makes the level of love in his message all the more resonant. For all of the harshness of the reality of being a black man in this country that Marvin experienced and was ONLY surrounded by in America, it makes his message of love all the more elevated, holy, sacred, helpful and an enduring gift available to us today. He can relate to these times more than you and I will ever even have an ability to relate to it's long-reaching history, and systemic origins. So please keep in mind for your encouragement for coping, that when he sings to us that all God asks of us "is we give each other LOVE," the presence of his mind at the time of penning that message was in a reality full of a measure even greater of the injustices we are making clear need to be coming to an end for society. Hi Everyone, I wasn't even planning on recording this episode today. But it is upon learning today of yet another moment that happened last night (that is too much a sign of the times) that led to me taking this episode to fully express my take on the times. To me, it all represents the ingrained remnants of the history of this nation. As you'll hear in the introduction to the episode, this is not one that talks much about Marvin Gaye, or his music. I do manage to make an important, relevant to 2020, reference to his Unreleased Alternate Version 2 of the song "You're The Man" at about an hour into the episode. Momentum has continued on the topic of Marvin Gaye's self-actualization. I've dug deeper into what did Marvin do with his time, on his journey thru life, once that "straw that broke the camel's back" incident happened in his career in 1967? In the previous episode, thru examining Marvin's released material we saw a several year span of time, from 1967 to total fruition of self-actualization with the release of "What's Going On" in 1971. Yet, and this is what makes it all the more poignant and personal to Marvin's LIFE, as we now have access to more unreleased material, we come across a wealth of material in 1967 that shows how IMMEDIATELY what Marvin began doing was fully immersing himself into recording the type of material that he felt helped him fulfill being true to himself. It is his first recording (we can hear) of the songs that he would record numerous times over the next decade until 1977-1978, and which he finally at that point felt fully satisfied with, and even considered the best work of his career, the album "Vulnerable." We discuss how there are two elements to our walk thru this thing called life. One element: the WORLD; which shapes and affects all of the elements outside of yourself. Let's face it, right now in this universe is a challenging time in this world, a shared experience by all. And the second element, the one we control, is our personal life journey. And what are we going to choose to make of it, do with it, and fill it with? Marvin's course of action in 1967 offers further encouragement for our collective challenges to not be overwhelmed by the WORLD during this time. "Everybody Needs Love" 1978 - The Gateway Into the Soul of Marvin Gaye. In this episode we discuss the general, music critic review of Marvin Gaye's album "Here, My Dear." Too often those without a queen insight into Marvin's entire body of work, focus too much on the backstory of how this project came to be, to provide money for Marvin & Anna's divorce settlement. Too often critics dismiss this project as something Marvin set out to do with a sense of spite and lack of concern for it's overall quality. And that simply is NOT what this project is. In this episode we begin to cover the 5th song from Marvin Gaye's 1978 masterpiece "Here, My Dear." Remarkably, it took until the 30th anniversary re-release of this project for us to get the "updated information" that Anna Gaye co-wrote with Marvin on this song. In 26 years of study of this work-of-art, I never listened to it from a perspective of thinking Anna Gaye had a hand in its creation, other than being its central source of inspiration. I have SO MUCH TO SAY about this song, that I have split it into two parts. I address the other project "Vulnerable" that Marvin worked on during the time of recording this album. Which leads me to look back on the decade earlier when he first got those songs and the fact that Marvin Gaye was ALWAYS Marvin Gaye, no matter what period of his career we look at. It was ALWAYS Marvin Gaye among a lot of other people. I sat and listened to every song from the Soulful Moods of Marvin Gaye tonight, and the only word I can use to describe my experience: mesmerized! Please allow yourself to go back in time as you hear the master introducing himself to us. OH! MY GOODNESS GUYS!! This is the purest experience of Marvin Gaye you will EVER have! Marvin is playing the piano AND the drums on every song, and possibly he is also playing the guitar as the inside of the album reveals he was skilled at the guitar, along with arranging, writing and singing. I've stated many times that Marvin was a percussionist and this is a very clear experience of his skills. Our beloved is showing himself to us for his very first solo project! In this episode I look back thru files from my youth, I've collected and archived, regarding special experiences I've had with documentaries, tributes and concerts of Marvin Gaye over the years. It's been in this past week that I came across the video of Marvin's 1980 concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival. This is a rare treat and a great, full concert experience of Marvin, at a point in his career where he has recorded the majority of his catalog, and he performs it with a huge group of skilled, TIGHT and well-rehearsed musicians! It was such a beautiful and deep experience being able to see and hear Marvin REALLY open up and CONNECT to his audience in his final minutes, of his final song of the concert: "What's Going On." I've long known that I am very safe being so sure of my adoration and connection to Marvin Gaye's music. But the last four minutes, or so, of this concert performance simply drove home the safety, correct alignment, and reason WHY I'm good to go for the rest of life on this journey WITH Marvin as a daily part of it. I was so touched by Marvin's words, and because I realize they could literally be a daily meditation resource, I have created two videos that are on our sister youtube channel. The first is audio-only. The 2nd is the full concert footage so you can SEE & HEAR Marvin delivering to us what he is aware was his purpose in this life. I circle back to perusing thru my archives and come across a stack of stories I wrote as a teenager when I was first deeply studying, for the first time, Marvin's albums. From my life-long love of writing, I was right at home to write full stories that I "SAW" as I'd deeply get into the visions that Marvin's full albums conveyed to me. We'll see if I decide to share them in full. I definitely remember them being extremely melodramatic, naive, and a hot-mess of drama. So if nothing else, they would be a source of comic relief to relive! I also know that no matter if I share those stories or not, the next ALBUM that I chronologically arrive at from here is "I WANT YOU." So upcoming episodes will focus on this work of Marvin's. In this episode I share my journey in 1994, to acquiring Marvin Gaye's biography titled "Divided Soul." I was only 15 years old and this book came about at about exactly one year into my study of Marvin. It helped to deepen the connection that had already been formed toward him. I share my take on the book from the eyes of a 15 year old young girl and my take on it now. It is a definite resource for getting to know more about the life of Marvin Gaye beyond the music, which will likely only make the two more seamless. Hi Friends, I wanted to take this episode to explore Marvin Gaye's Ohana-Spirit connection to the Hawaiian Islands. I've been blessed to visit this gorgeous archipelago several times thru the years; But it was on that very first visit that I immediately got it: the appeal the islands had for Marvin. The Islands are a spiritual place for rejuvenation, healing and renewal. I first learned of Marvin's affinity for the Islands when I read his semi-autobiography "Divided Soul" when I was 15. Jan Gaye also details multiple visits their family took to the islands in her book. I reference a biography which MTV produced on Marvin in the mid 90s, and there is a section of it where they get to discussing Marvin's time in Hawaii. They cut to speaking to Smokey Robinson and he provides the best example I will share about what seems to be the general state of affairs in Marvin's life, the times in the late 70s that he sought refuge on the Islands. Marvin got in touch with Smokey to ask him to send him a considerable amount of money. And Smokey stated that this was the one time in their lives that he denied Marvin anything. But he just knew what Marvin would have done with the money and the people he had surrounding him at the time that he was not going to fund it. Unfortunately the times Marvin needed the refuge of the Islands he TRULY needed it. But here's the thing. There's just something about Hawaii. It seems to be a little bit bigger than circumstances a lot of the times, or so I've found on my trips. There have been several trips where what Hawaii provided me was a sacred, spiritual place to go sit myself down and take some quiet time to get things sorted out. Based on this, I just have this feeling that yes, Marvin was going through some of his biggest life's challenges the times he spent in Hawaii, but I believe it is Hawaii and the fact he was there going thru it, that gave us a little bit more time with Marvin and a few more albums from him. There are so many Instrumentals from Marvin during this timeframe that I just feel that the visions that intended to accompany his sounds, are the sights of Hawaii. The Islands definitely inspired his art The specific song I share a STRONG and POWERFUL connection to of Marvin's from my very first, and very eventful trip to Hawaii is "Praise" from the 1981 "In Our Lifetime" album. I returned home from that trip with a newfound and very personal connection to understanding the need to stay "Praised-Up" thru life. I first heard this song on Disc 4-The Balladeer of the Marvin Gaye Collection which contains a mix of Marvin Gaye songs from his 4 jazz albums released in the early 1960s along with a wealth of unreleased takes of songs later released on an album titled "Vulnerable." I share how this segment of Marvin's career has always held a special place for me. And the fact that my initial study of Marvin's music threw me into the middle of the Pacific ocean, so to speak, vs. the 3 foot shallow end of the pool...is the reason why my podcast series has the mission it does. The mission is to help expose you to the deep end, the Pacific Ocean end of Marvin Gaye's musical catalog. I share how I've recently come across a performance Marvin Gaye gave on a tv show from 1968 where he sang another song in this vein titled "Why Did I Choose You." Marvin Gaye is asked where the song comes from after performing it, and his answer to the question provides an explanation of the level of depth of Marvin's knowledge of this genre of music, his seriousness about it, his expertise of it, and the education that he was trying to provide to his listeners. The VERY first time I ever heard the song "Distant Lover" was this live concert delivery from the 1974 Marvin Gaye Live album. I was only 14 and it provided a clear understanding to me that "WOW, Marvin Gaye...is the REAL DEAL!" The way that this sold-out coliseum full of adoring fans EXPLODES at the moment Marvin utters two words: DISTANT LOVER...it gives chills. I heard this song in the first month of my journey into learning all about Marvin Gaye. And there is just something about that audience's reaction to hearing their beloved begin one of their obvious favorite songs of his, that solidifies Marvin Gaye reached a status of being a legend in his own time. Not every artist achieves that, but when that status is achieved, it results in these kind of very deep, emotional, coveted, hanging on every note, sold out 40,000+ arenas PERFORMANCES that is a next-level of artistic career achievement. And Marvin Gaye had achieved all of this at just slightly past the halfway point in his career. He'd been a teenage heartthrob in the 60s, he's had the million copy selling success of "I Heard it Through the Grapevine," he's made all the duets with Tammi Terrell, he's had the once in a lifetime achievement of artistic purity "What's Going On," he's pulled off a very rare feat of scoring and sound-tracking a film "Trouble Man," and now he's ventured into new soul-bearing love-song territory with the album "Let's Get it On." Yeah, all of that is most definitely legend in your own time status, and you wouldn't even need a thing more to happen with your career. Yet, thankfully we have so much more material to receive from Marvin Gaye from this point forward. And this night, this concert, THIS singular performance, it's just a proud moment for all of us, Marvin, every fan that had the golden opportunity to be apart of that experience, and thankfully each of us to this day and beyond! This song contains the ONLY 20 seconds of Marvin Gaye's full-strength, in his power, and IN HIS MASTERY of his voice, that you, me, the world can handle. There is 20 seconds of space from minute 3 and 41 seconds thru minute 4 of this song that we are shown a one-time glimpse of Marvin Gaye fully unleashing an ability, and ENDURING GIFT; that I believe he was so caught up in the moment of the song, that he did not resist, he did not hold-back, he did not remember, that he was slipping up and showing us entirely what he was working with. The name of this song could just as easily be "Who Really Cares?" because it is the theme of the song that is repeated over and over. Marvin takes us to a time of REVELATIONS, he is painting a future, bleek scene of what life will be on our planet (and are we there yet?). And it's enough of a vivid picture to barely be able to handle it, thinking of just ourselves in the midst of this scene he's orating. But it is at minute 1 and 26 seconds that Marvin inserts the CHILDREN into this picture, this opera, and suddenly...something both breaks down inside, and turns on inside of the listener. It becomes crystal clear that the children are the total motivation to save this world.
