Hi everybody. This is the audio version of a six-part essay series called Blacks and Jews. I wrote it for my Substack a while back, so if it sounds like I'm reading instead of speaking naturally, it's because in this case I am. I decided to release this to everyone on the main feed because, in light of the recent uproar and brewing Democratic Party civil war over the Israel-Palestine conflict, it's suddenly become quite timely. Black and Jewish Americans were uniquely united until the late 1960s, when the civil rights movement was subsumed by a Third Worldist outlook that caused the Black Panthers and other activists to turn on the State of Israel, and then on American Jews. It precipitated a split in the so-called Black-Jewish alliance which had been the backbone of the civil rights movement during its glory years, and led to some of the worst outbursts of public antisemitism in American history. The intra-left wing conflict over the current conflict in Gaza is not a new story, and in fact is an example of scabs being torn off old wounds that had barely begun to heal. I wrote this series as I was preparing the most recent episode of Whose America, Inner City Blues, so those of you who've heard that will be familiar with some of the material, but there's also a lot of material that wasn't in that episode. As I said, this was previously released on my Substack, so if you enjoy this kind of content maybe you'll show a little holiday cheer and help support the podcast by becoming a subscriber for just $5 p/month or $50 p/year. This is a 100% listener-funded show, I don't have sponsors or any other kind of funding except what you guys contribute, so your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Welcome back, Buddies! On this episode of Vinyl Community Podcasts, I'm joined by Rob (Northern Revolutions) to share our thoughts on the incredible story of Sixto Diaz Rodriguez - recording artist, father, and subject of the 2013 Academy Award Winning Documentary "Searching For Sugarman". Mr. Rodriguez passed away recently at the age of 81, leaving behind incredible music and a story even the best writers in Hollywood could not emulate. The film suggests that Rodriguez was lost to obscurity (in the music industry) - especially in his own country - only to shockingly learn about about a devoted following in South Africa. Yet that's not the entire tale. Rob and I discuss the documentary, Rodriguez' career and album output, plus share some notes not found in the documentary and developments following the film. An artist we both came to enjoy immensely due to the film, we both found it fitting that even on the day his passing was announced he was not given his full due with the unfortunate news of the passing of Robbie Robertson of The Band. Life still imitating art; art imitating life. Fitting, no? Perhaps just another example of those  "Inner City Blues"....   For more information on host Concert Buddie: https://www.youtube.com/@ConcertBuddie   For more information on Rob (c/o Northern Revolutions): https://www.youtube.com/@NorthernRevolutions   For more information on Vinyl Community Podcasts: https://vinylcommunitypodcasts.com/   Save 10% on purchases ANY TIME at Vinyl Storage Solutions using the promo code(s) "VCP10" or "CONCERTBUDDIE". And this one is a doozy: The Great Migration of 1915-1960 saw over six million African Americans move from the rural South to the big cities of the North and West. It was one of the largest mass migrations in human history, and one whose consequences defined American domestic politics throughout the 20th century. But it wasn't the first time the industrial cities of America had experienced massive demographic transformation, and the black migrants would run smack into the immigrants of previous generations. In the 1960s, frustration and anger turned to conflict, as race riots drove what was left of the white ethnics out of the inner cities. Today we tell the story of the battle for control of the Ocean Hill-Brownsville school district in New York City - a topic which might sound a bit dull, but was one of the most intense periods of racial conflict in recent American history. The conflict captured the attention of the country for months, and led to a split in the alliance between American blacks and American Jews that had powered the civil rights movement until the late 1960s.

With his 1971 album, "What's Going On," Motown staple Marvin Gaye turned the R&B world -- and the pop music world for that matter -- upside down, smashing conventional ideas about pop songs, album topics and even song themes. It's an album -- and one you really should listen to from start to finish -- about a Vietnam vet returning from war to find an America weighted down by racism, drugs, hatred and injustice. Not surprising, Gaye had to fight hard to have his vision come to life. It was deemed to be a concept album without any radio hits. It was too dark -- especially coming from the voice of such hits as "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)," "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," and so many more. But in the end, Gaye got his way -- and our world is better for it. He even had the last laugh as the title track went to No. 2 on the Billboard Soul charts, and "Mercy Mercy Me" and "Inner-City Blues" both charted in the top 10. Oh, and in 2020, Rolling Stone listed it No. 1 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. "Right On."

. Architecture you can eat - It sounds like something out of a Willy Wonka movie. That's exactly what Dr Joshua Zeunert from UNSW Built Environment is recommending to bring us back in touch with food production in our daily lives. Straight away, the mind wanders to candy worlds where you can take a bite out of a load-bearing beam, but it's a little more civilised than that. It's about engaging with nature in more practical ways. Dr Zeunert says there are mental and physical and health benefits without compromising on design. Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio - “Inner City Blues,” a 2020 single on Colemine Records. Back in June, Colemine Records launched the Brighter Days Ahead singles series, a response to the stay-at-home orders and the subsequent loss of income from canceling tours, postponing release dates, and ceasing the manufacturing for LPs and 45s. "We wanted to come up with some way to give our fans and our artist's fans something to look forward to," explained label owner Terry Cole. Starting on May 22nd and running through the summer, Colemine will release a new track every Friday on their Bandcamp page with 100% of any revenues generated going directly to the artist. "Our goals are simple: put a little bit of money in our artist's pockets and get our fans some new tunes," Cole summarized. The series kicked off with Seattle's own Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio covering Marvin Gaye's 1971 track "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" off his landmark album What's Going On. The lyrics convey the despair of the bleak economic situation of the times, the lack of support from the government, and police brutality. (That sounds depressingly familiar.) But, in the hands of maestro Delvon Lamarr, the song sounds almost joyous as an instrumental. Guitarist Jimmy James adds a funky groove to the track, and drummer Dan Weiss picks up the pace from Gaye's original composition. Listening to it makes you believe, there might really be brighter days ahead. Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate

The Black Equalist (TBE) is another compilation of speeches and essays created by human (Afro) rights activist, DM Lawrence. TBE is a mixtape/audiobook/podcast about social, economic, and political issues in America and internationally. The purpose of this project is to introduce DM Lawrence's Pan-African philosophy of Black Equalism, which focuses on the fact that despite our social, economic, and political status - all people are equal. Moreover, "Black", "white", and race are not real but social constructions created to compel people to dislike "Black/black" (non-white) people. All in all, DM Lawrence attacks the dividers of people and social constructs and systems/practices (colorism, racism, sexism, xenophobia, poverty, sexuality, religion, ethnicity, gender, political affiliation, region/geography), that are created to hold people back and maintain the status quo.

In this episode we explore Marvin Gaye's song "Inner City Blues," his conclusion to his masterpiece, work of art "What's Going On." This song is a brand new, beginning, change, fresh start. It is Marvin unleashing on us "Marvin Groove." This is a phrase I coined in episode 1 of this podcast series: "There's Groove, and then there's MARVIN GROOVE." Folks I go all the way in this episode getting to the point of THE headline that will be the thread throughout ALL episodes to come: Marvin Gaye is the baddest Mother (Shut your mouth) that there ever was. That means of all time, ever. Of all preceding, of all during his time, and carrying thru to this day, with no peer. I just couldn't avoid needing to establish that in this episode because I can't WAIT to fully paint my picture around this in every episode going forward. With this song, is it not the GROOVIEST (to coin it as Marvin would), most original, and thorough example of making a change, starting anew, and doing it with complete mastery. From note one Marvin is building us from scratch, and in real time, a totally new sound that he owns, claims, and puts on us from this point forward with no mercy, and with an expertise that just needs to be the theme song to life for any threshold, fork in the road, on the verge of a new beginning experience you may face; and where you could use that encouragement to OWN IT! Play this song for your build-up and to give you that boost to go for it! Please visit our PInterest page which is full of some very hard and fun work I'm putting in to capture all of the beautiful and relevant imagery I can find, of our revered subject: Marvin Gaye. It really is my goal for you to be able to see (and hear, via many videos I'm finding) for yourself, relevant references I make in these episodes. I've got 1000+ pictures & videos of rare television and concert performances, documentaries, and even the two MOVIES that Marvin Gaye made!!
