Correction: The story in this episode about Malcolm X's legacy in Queens has been edited to clarify a statement by Najha Zigbi-Johnson. New York Congress members say the Trump administration will not move forward with cuts to the federal health program for 9/11 survivors after intense public backlash. Meanwhile, New York City's Office of Equity and Racial Justice is set to release its first-ever citywide racial equity plan next month. Also, the Yankees are lifting their ban on facial hair, allowing players to have well-groomed beards for the first time in 50 years. Plus, Governor Kathy Hochul held a press conference Thursday explaining her decision on whether to remove Mayor Eric Adams from office. Finally, 60 years after Malcolm X's assassination, WNYC's Ryan Kailath explores his lesser-known history in Queens.

For the past two decades, Sri Lankan politics has been dominated by the Rajapaksa family, with two brothers more or less alternating between serving as president and prime minister from 2005 to 2022. Their regime was marked by corruption and sustained through appeals to ethnic nationalism among the majority Sinhalese Buddhist population, including by deliberately inciting sentiment against minority Muslim and Tamil communities. This kind of appeal to nationalism was the dominant force in Sri Lankan politics for most of the last 20 years — until, that is, the elections this fall. In presidential and then parliamentary elections, a new coalition called National People's Power, led by Anura Kumara Dissanayake, better known as AKD, campaigned on a platform of ethnic pluralism and good governance. They won overwhelmingly, securing 159 out of 225 seats in Parliament — a supermajority — leaving the Rajapaksa party with just three seats. Joining me to explain how this so-called "Peaceful Political Revolution" was achieved is Neil DeVotta, Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Wake Forest University. He is the author of a new article on this stunning turn of events, which appears in the most recent edition of the Journal of Democracy. We begin by discussing just how remarkable this political transition has been and what drove Sri Lankans to abandon the fractious ethnic politics of the past two decades. We then delve into how AKD and his National People's Power coalition can reverse Sri Lanka's democratic backsliding.

In Liberia, it was business as usual, at least so it seemed, in the divided national legislature. A group of lawmakers claiming to be the majority in the House of Representatives held a hearing Tuesday about allegations of bribery connected to Speaker J. Fonati Koffa. The Speaker is being forced out of his job by the so-called majority bloc for alleged corruption. He has refused to step down. This, as a delegation from the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States is in Liberia on a mediation mission. The incident has caused President Joseph Boakai to postpone the submission of the draft national budget for Fiscal Year 2025. Representative Foday Edward Fahnbulleh, member of the Good Governance and Reform Committee and a member of the group calling for Speaker Koffa's removal, tells VOA's James Butty, Speaker Koffa is conflicted
An independent member of the Liberian House of Representatives says Speaker J. Fonati Koffa deserves due process. This comes as one group of members, which claims to have the majority, is demanding the removal of the speaker for conflict of interest. Speaker Koffa has refused to step down. Independent member, Ellen Attoh Wreh, tells VOA's James Butty, removing the speaker must follow the constitution and the rule of law.

Liberia's Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) says it will investigate allegations of bribery to overthrow the Speaker of the House of Representatives, J. Fonati Koffa. In this episode of "Sara Gonzales Unfiltered," Sara and Dave Rubin of "The Rubin Report" discuss President Biden's latest attempt to convince the Democrats, as well as the American public, that he's still “the guy for the job.” This time, he has scheduled his first live press conference since 2023, which the media — and even White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and Biden spokesman John Kirby — have dubbed the “big boy press conference.” The real question is whether Biden has the juice to “save democracy” again in 2024. Sara and Dave also discuss who's behind the Democrats' apparent attempts to oust Biden from the 2024 race: George Clooney or Barack Obama? Plus, they review the GOP's "SAVE Act," which would help ensure that only American citizens vote in our elections. And they consider whether red states such as Florida would secede if the Democrats are successful in taking the White House in November. Should he stay or should he go? President Joe Biden's decision to remain in the presidential race has consequences for hundreds of millions of people — and it has at least one Democratic National Committee member and convention delegate inquiring whether the party can force him off the ticket. But if Biden's out, corporate lobbyists who've embedded themselves into the party could help select the new nominee. Today on Lever Time, Arjun Singh speaks withThe American Prospect's Executive Editor David Dayen, Jacobin staff writer Branko Marcetic, and Sludge co-founder David Moore to unpack the divide fracturing the Democratic Party and look at how corporate power is woven into the fabric of the party's convention, to be held in Chicago from August 19 to 22. Biden's road to the 2024 presidential nomination has been anything but democratic. Team Biden crushed all attempts to have him prove his mettle against primary challengers. After his disastrous debate performance against Trump triggered a revolt within his own party, Biden didn't hold a town hall to meet with the public — he hopped on the phone with his top donors. Now, those same donors could portend Biden's downfall, with wealthy backers like George Clooney urging the president to step down, and others yanking their donations. Will the new alliance between a majority of Democratic voters and the party's elite insiders all be on the same page regarding Biden's potential replacement?
Every day, it appears that Biden's mental decline is getting worse. Filling in for Glenn, Pat and Jeffy discuss Biden's worsening speaking demeanor while at NATO. Jeffy goes through his “Fat 5” news stories, including rising Costco membership fees, "Inside Out 2" becoming Pixar's highest-grossing film, and George Soros' son. The guys discuss journalist Chuck Todd denouncing those calling for Biden to drop out of the race. Pat and Jeffy take calls from listeners about who they think will be on the final ballot this November. Did Obama have something to do with George Clooney pushing for Biden to drop out? Although the Democratic Party remains mired in infighting over President Biden's disastrous debate performance, congressional Democrats now appear increasingly convinced that he will survive as the nominee. They seem resigned to this even as many appear convinced he will lose to Donald Trump in November. What happened here, exactly? We talked to The American Prospect's David Dayen, who has a good new piece called “Why the Bid to Push Out Biden is Losing,” about how Biden seems to have shut down the opposition, what it says about the Democratic Party, and why there's still grounds for deep anxiety about what comes next. SERIES 2 EPISODE 208: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) COUNTDOWN BULLETIN: In a disturbing end to an otherwise low-news interview with George Stephanopoulos of ABC News, President Biden was asked how he will feel if he stays in the race and loses to Trump. "As long as I gave it my all and I did as good a job as I know I could do, that's what this is all about." I'm not sure how that question could be answered, but that answer is terrifying. As Mr. Biden undertakes his second rehab tour this year, with the interview and a rally in Madison, Wisconsin, Senator Mark Warner of Virginia is reportedly convening a meeting among his Democratic colleagues to urge them to join him in a trip to the White House to burst what they see as an informational bubble around the president. In the meantime, Governor Maura Healey of Massachusetts, who just six weeks ago led a big-money fundraiser for the president, issued an on-the-record statement urging Biden to carefully reassess whether he's the right candidate to defeat Trump. And House Minority leader Jeffries will convene his committee ranking members on Sunday to discuss the situation. While a groundswell seems to be forming for a consensus Kamala Harris candidacy, there seem to be two questions to ask yourself in formulating your own opinion as to what to do next: 1) the debate is two months from next Tuesday. Do you want JOE Biden participating in it? And 2) Do you want a story, the lead story, or the only story every day between now and the debate to be some form of: How does the president seem?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
