"We are all emotional beings."I'm going to be a vulnerable here...even though I am feeling better overall than I have ever felt before, I have had a difficult history with my emotions. My frame before was that emotions happen to me. They drove the bus. What I have learned since is two primary things, 1) that emotions are information (not truth) and 2) we can influence our emotions through movement. Thankfully, I have a lot more say over my emotions today thanks to working with Laura Bond and her approach. We can choose how we feel to a greater degree than we think. My guest today is Laura Bond, the creator of the Emotional Body Method. Her work has helped me to understand my emotions through a curious, compassionate and play approach that is a perfect complement to Feldenkrais and other embodiment work. The Emotional Body Method aims to help people understand their emotions, be more comfortable with themselves, and improve their expression and presentation skills. Insecurities and old habits can interfere with how we express ourselves. In fact, we often operate in a mix of emotions. When we don't have clear expressions of emotions, other people don't understand us as well, they get mixed messages or confused, and we can feel powerless. The method focuses on the 6 primary emotional patterns that we all are born with. The patterns are explored on all levels: posture, facial expression, breathing and vocalization. Through mixing within this simple palette of 6 comes the rich rainbow of all human expression. Another thing I really like about the Emotional Body Method is that it doesn't go into difficult stories or psychological concepts. Instead it's physical explorations. In this episode expect to hear:The scientific origins of the Emotional Body. What are the 6 emotional patterns. What is emotional regulation and the importance of calming the nervous system. On unlearning old habits through repetition and variation. Why is does the Emotional Body use a letter and number system? (1a,1b,2a,2b,3a,3b)The 7th pattern, zero, and it's use for finding emotional neutrality. How Feldenkrais Method inspired the Emotional Body.Entanglements with our emotions, where two or more emotions are unconsciously mixed.About Laura BondLaura Bond is an internationally recognized master instructor and teacher trainer in the emotional effector patterns, and the Emotional Body® courses. Karen McEwan's daughter, Elana, is 20 years old. It's been a complex journey from birth to today. Elana suffers from a rare, incurable disease called Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD). This is the first podcast that is not about cystic fibrosis specifically, although you will see the connection. It's about chronic illness and Mom's connecting and parents doing all they can for their children. We go through the same anxiety, fear, frustrations, you name it, we can relate. Karen also has a younger daughter, Madison who does not have a rare disease.Karen is a strong person sharing her story, and the challenging journey she's been on with her daughter. How did we meet? My brother's wife, Lisa connected us. We were both advocating and Lisa Teicher thought we would enjoy having out. We met in a Starbucks the first time and didn't stop talking. Moms who have kids with a chronic illness have so much in common. We bonded over chronic illness. Laura Bond, Director of the Arts and Ideas program at the University of North Carolina in Asheville and master trainer in the Alba Method (a somatic approach to inducing, expressing, and modulating emotions). Do you often feel driven by our emotions? What if there was a method to put you in the driver's seat? In this conversation, Laura Bond talks about how each of our emotions is very specifically embodied: anger, for example, has its own muscle patterns in the face and body which are quite different from that of joy. When people learn how to do these patterns, they become able to physically shift their emotional state, they begin to feel different. “Suddenly you have more power, more control,” says Laura. Laura has found that the Alba Method, originally used to train actors, is actually universal, something that anyone can use, including coaches and practitioners. Being able to sense the physical expression of your emotional state, and then embody a different one is far from imitating life; it is understanding life. Bio: Laura Bond is a Full Professor at UNC-Asheville, and the Director of the Arts and Ideas Program. Laura is a master teacher in the Alba Method of physical emotion regulation. She has developed new methods to teach the Alba Method to the general public and helps performers, business professionals, therapists, and life coaches recognize how the method can be used in their practices. She is the author of TEAM for Actors: A Holistic Approach to Embodied Acting.
What small little changes could you make to up your game? What simple lifestyle practices could you use right now to increase your performance levels? How could you find an extra 5% and feel awesome every day? Today's Zestology guest is a favourite of mine and a fave on the podcast too, Laura Bond. Laura is a health journalist and health coach, and her techniques are cutting edge and fascinating... vitamin C injections, coffee enemas and infrared saunas are par for the course. Last time we spoke we looked a lot at alternative solutions for better health. This time we look more at the practices you can use to take an already happy and fulfilled life to a new level - finding that extra 5%. Her book and articles are like a guidebook for anyone who wants to find the edge and take their performance levels up a notch. In addition, she's had a crazy 7 or 8 months since we last met, so there was a lot to catch up on. We walked through Soho and recorded as we walked, ending up sitting on a park bench in Golden Square alongside the pigeons, it was, as always with Laura, a lovely and inspiring day. Also coming up, we road-test 'hypertonic drinks' (and accidentally spill them on my trousers - sad times.) Today's podcast is for anyone who's interested in ideas for boosting their energy, vitality and health. Laura's particularly well informed, and her journey since we last spoke is a must listen. Also, 'pets with boobs' make an appearance in today's podcast, and this scary prospect alone should be enough to make you listen. Next time on Zestology; Find an extra 5%, perform better, and learn the scary truth about dry cleaning with health journalist Laura Bond. It's a good one, recorded on the scene in London. It's coming this weekend.
Have you ever considered supplementing with turmeric, or vitamin D spray, or B12 injections, or, er, trying a coffee enema? Well, believe it or not, all of these alternative remedies could help you on your journey to energy, vitality and feeling awesome. Today's Zestology podcast guest is Laura Bond. In March 2011 Laura Bond's mother Gemma was diagnosed with ovarian and uterine cancer. Laura discovered that the only thing more shocking than telling someone your mother has cancer was revealing that she had declined chemotherapy. Laura is a health journalist and health coach, and she decided to write a book that would become hugely successful, 'Mum's Not Having Chemo'. It explains her mother's decision to say 'no' to mainstream medicine and 'yes' to hydrogen peroxide, vitamin C injections and infrared saunas. Today's podcast doesn't have a particular focus on cancer, it's just for anyone who's interested in boosting their energy, vitality and health. It's informative, and I think ultimately uplifting. Laura's mother beat cancer the natural way, and the two of them have a great story to tell. When you listen, you'll hear: Living with more energy Flood your body with oxygen through juicing, looser clothing and body brushing (who knew!) Look into Vitamin C injections, Vitamin D spray, turmeric supplements and (yes) coffee enemas. Consider supporting your immune system with Myers Cocktail injections and Vitamin B12 injections. Easy, everyday tips for vitality Cutting down on sugar for extra vitality. Cut down on coffee to protect your energy and magnesium levels. Drink 'raw milk' for better dairy intake. Finding motivation Stress and anxiety is the number 1 cause of illness and disease. Beat stress by developing your sense of joy. Remember your thoughts, feelings and behaviour influence your health. Follow your passion and this will help your physical and mental health. And lots more
