In this episode of Parenting is a Joke, comedian and Denver arts staple Janae Burris joins Ophira Eisenberg to talk about becoming a mom at 41 after thinking parenthood had passed her by. She recounts the surreal moment she realized she was pregnant—just after performing at a comedy show—and how fear and humor carried her through a high-risk pregnancy. Janae reflects on her path from dropping out of high school to earning an avant-garde theater degree and eventually finding a creative home in Denver, where she juggles stand-up, plays, and teaching. She opens up about shifting professional priorities, bringing her toddler (and sometimes guacamole-stained pants) on the road, and why she now sees moms in the audience as the most electric crowd she could ask for. With honest laughs about crib fails, mom guilt, and the awkwardness of post-show hangs, Janae paints a vivid picture of what parenting and performing really look like when your setlist includes bedtime and baby gear. She also shares how her comedy special MomBod became a time capsule of her pregnancy fears, filmed while she was visibly pregnant and quietly panicking about whether her baby would make it to term. Janae Burris used to fudge the numbers when people asked how long she's been doing stand-up comedy. “I kind of stopped doing that, though,” she told the Denver Post earlier this week. “I've gotten to the point in my [career] that I can tell people the truth and still get jobs.” But now that the stand-up scene is finally creeping back after two years of terrible comedy over the internet, Burris is on the precipice of great change: She's eight and a half months pregnant. To document this unique moment, she's recording her first big comedy special in front of a live audience at the Aurora Fox Arts Center next week, and she's on the show today to talk with host Bree Davies about being funny while pregnant. Berry is back! That's right, our favorite local podcast critic is back with another #listenlocal recommendation for your weekend. Berry's pick this month is How Art is Born, the first-ever podcast from Denver's Museum of Contemporary Art. Also of note, it's hosted by R. Alan Brooks, who local podcast fans will recognize from his show about comics and culture, Motherf**ker in a Cape. How Art is Born features interviews with all kinds of Colorado creatives, from comedians like Janae Burris to photographers like Armando Geneyro, who is featured in the episode Berry recommends you start with. Live podcast episode! We eat exotic mountain meats cooked by Producer Ron and Ben's son Milo! Yes, even Ben, who's a vegetarian! Earlier this month, we were invited to perform at the opening weekend at TACAW (The Arts Campus at Willits), an amazing new venue north of Aspen in Basalt, Colorado. The mountain peaks were dusted with snow, and the aspen leaves were popping off, and we Grawlix three were just feeling, like, really connected to nature, you know? So, we decided to try "living off the land" in front of a live audience—a.k.a. tasting three mystery dishes featuring iconic Colorado animals—all lovingly prepared by Producer Ron and Ben's son Milo. Did we all die of food poisoning? Listen and find out! Featuring standup comedy clips from Janae Burris and Chris Fairbanks! Comedian Janae Burris has made a name for herself in Denver as a member of Comedy Works' Pro List and as a frequent opener for Josh Blue (not to mention her Sh!t Talk Tours at MCA Denver). But her journey to comedy came by way of her love for theatre and standup was initially a way to bolster her acting résumé. In this episode, Janae and R. Alan Brooks discuss her path to the stage, tips for newcomers to comedy, and her experience being pigeonholed and typecast as a Black woman in both theatre and comedy. You can find Janae performing at the 8th annual High Plains Comedy Festival September 16-18, 2021.Links discussed in this episode:Janae's websiteFollow Janae on InstagramFollow Janae on TwitterJanae's comedy classes for girls at Athena ProjectThis episode contains mature language and content.Mentioned in this episode:Check Out Off The Walls from Colorado Public RadioHey! Episode 200: Today we're going to do something a little different—to celebrate reaching 200 episodes, we're paying tribute to one of the people who has made all of this possible, our producer, Sydney Crain. In this episode, you'll hear clips of stories from Janae Burris, Ellen K. Graham, and Steven Burge, plus a full story told by Sydney at our "Framed" show in June 2019. He's a good boy and he loves his mom and his name's George Michael; he's a dog! Welcome to another episode of One on Lund with your host Nathan Lund. I sat down with the hilarious and multi-talented Janae Burris and, to be honest, this one got a little heavy at times. Instead of focusing on comedy or Denver, Janae and I shared our concerns for the earth's climate, racism, and the class war that might be right around the corner. Janae is one of my favorite people to hang out with, whether we are performing together or playing Settlers of Catan or poker. We're thrilled to be joined once again by Janae Burris and Christie Buchele for another special episode! Janae and Christie are here to talk about Ida B. Wells and the White Rose, and we still try to deal with the election of President Putin's puffier cousin. In this episode, Zach calls Gollum on his horseshit, Janae practices her new closer, Christie asserts her place on the list of very important people, and Brian abandons all hope of segues. As serious as this episode gets, one of the best tangents ever in the show happens in this episode, so check it out!
Two of the most brilliant comics in Denver, Christie Buchele and Janae Burris join us for what was supposed to be a totally normal episode. Instead, we have an emotional, free flowing, occasionally hilarious conversation about the impact of the 2016 election. Minimal editing has been done on the audio, Zach and I (Brian) share a mic, and it was one of the most cathartic experiences I've had. Christie and Janae stick around to record a more traditional episode, out in two weeks. But if you need some release, or to feel connected to someone, this episode is for you.
