Interview by Kris PetersHe may have been taken from us far too soon, but the legacy and memory of guitar great Randy Rhoads will live forever. Rhoads' name is revered in the music world, where, for a period from the late 1970s through to the early 1980s, his playing and presence left a shadow of brilliance that is as strong today as it was back then. The virtuoso guitarist, who co-founded Quiet Riot and propelled Ozzy Osbourne's solo career with Blizzard of Ozz (1980) and Diary of a Madman (1981), remains one of heavy metal's most important figures. Before his untimely death in 1982 at just 25, Rhoads redefined guitar-driven rock, blending classical influences with blistering metal to pioneer the neoclassical metal subgenre. His iconic riffs, featured in timeless songs such as Crazy Train and Mr. Crowley, and innovative techniques, including two-handed tapping, vibrato bar dive bombs, and intricate scales, set a new standard for the 80s metal scene and inspired countless guitarists.Recognised with a 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, Rhoads' legacy endures as a cornerstone of heavy metal evolution, with his signature Jackson Rhoads guitar symbolizing his revolutionary impact. To most of this current generation and beyond, the life and music of Randy Rhoads will always be that of past reflection, unable to bear witness to the great man on stage with precious little preserved on camera or film. But this December, thanks to XMusic, fans can get as close to the glory days of guitar as possible when A TRIBUTE TO RANDY RHOADS - The Stories and Music Behind the Legend - hits this country for a performance that includes live renditions of Rhoads' finest moments as well as an in-depth Q&A session. This is more than just a tribute performance, with Rhoads' long-time friend, confidant and co-founder of Quiet Riot, Kelly Garni, heading the evening alongside Rhoads' first-ever guitar teacher, Scott Shelley. It promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Randy Rhoads - a true guitar legend - whose influence still resonates in every power chord and soaring solo played today. HEAVY had the pleasure of speaking with Kelly Garni ahead of the tour, and among the topics of conversation was the sheer magnitude of putting together and the need for a performance of this scale."I don't pursue these things," he stressed. "People come to me, and they ask me to do them. There's a very, very large fan base for Randy Rhoads, and pretty much I'm the last man standing (laughs). Of course, I don't have Kevin (Dubrow, vocalist), who I sure do miss. Although if you read my book, you wouldn't believe that in a million years, but boy do I miss him. He was a great, great guide for me, and I learned a real lot from Kevin. But anyway, I've been approached several times, and I've been all around the country over the last few years here in America, and now Japan twice. People want anything left of Randy, and I guess I'm what you get. It's an honour to represent my best friend. Of course, anybody would do that for their best friend, if they're any kind of a friend. And so, since people are so excited to hear that music again, I happily oblige and go and do these shows."Garni had many tales to tell, among them how Alice Cooper shaped much of what was to eventually become the sound of Quiet Riot, albeit without having ever met the two impressionable youths."When we saw Cooper, we said we're gonna be rock stars, whether anybody likes it or not," he smiled. "And you know, in my mind, Randy did, but I never really did. And I never really wanted to. And that's okay because things had changed over the years to where I didn't want to be in the music business any more, but because of my association with Randy, I find myself very heavily involved (laughs). And I gotta say, to see and meet all the fans who come to these shows is really, really something that makes you feel good in your heart and your soul."In the full interview, Kelly addressed the excitement among fans and the importance of celebrating Rhoads' legacy, highlighting the involvement of key figures from Randy's early career to enhance the authenticity of the tribute. He spoke about the rest of the band, including musicians from Snake Bite Whiskey and the Van Halen tribute band Van Hager, along with a Q&A session featuring Scott Shelley, Randy's first guitar teacher. We spoke about the Q&A session and the personal nature of the questions and how emotional it could get.Reflecting on his and Randy's musical journeys, Kelly shared insights into their early influences and the challenges they faced, including Randy's struggles with confidence and vocal abilities. He recounted the band's evolution, including a misguided image overhaul that led them to adopt a look that felt disconnected from their original sound. We also spoke about important moments of Randy's life and the impression he left on others, including Kelly, the ever-lasting legacy left behind by his untimely death and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Childhood experiences of life on a sailboat in the Bahamas and Caribbean left a profound mark on Kait Rhoads. The experience of growing up on the water has provided great inspiration for her artwork. The artist's Sea Stones series hints at its watery origins. Each sculpture is a small world in itself, an intimate object you can hold in your hand. A talisman, the work looks almost molecular, like plankton carapaces as observed under a microscope. Rhoads states: “My work is inspired by nature and informed by memory. And, three oceans—the Caribbean, the Indian and the Pacific – delineate the imaginative boundaries of my practice. I grew up on the water of the Caribbean in a ship with my family where my deep affinity for biological systems began. I lived surrounded by nature; the liquid light and aquatic life imprinted upon my senses. The sculptures I create emanate from my early experiences within and curiosity about the natural world. While exploring the waters around Bali, I experienced the extraordinary biodiversity and extensive architecture of coral colonies there. This has been a deep influence on my sculptural forms and process of making.” Best-known for her innovative use of Venetian techniques such as murrine and filigrana, she applies these decorative processes to sculptural forms as well as to vessels. She was influenced early on by Lino Tagliapietra's work with cane and Richard Marquis' use of murrine as a structural material. Rhoads' unique process involves weaving pieces of blown and cut glass tubes with copper wire to create flexible looking “soft sculptures.” States Rhoads: “My method of construction mirrors how my life has formed me, with individual elements woven together to create a strong whole. I consider the individual units, conical hexagonal forms known as hollow murrine, as architectural elements that fit together to create a fluid or floating object. The concept of the work develops slowly, and the production of a complicated piece can take months to years to complete.” Rhoads is also well known for her public art installations including Bloom, commissioned in 2018 for the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art's two-story tall window space. In 2022, Bloom was chosen to be permanently installed inside of the biology department at Highline College, Des Moines, Washington. She also created Salish Nettles, her largest work to date, for the Pacific Seas Aquarium, Tacoma, Washington, and Proto Kelp, which was on view through October of 2024 at Method Gallery, Seattle, Washington. In 2025, the artist will apply for residencies and funding to expand the project sustainably. In all of these public projects Rhoads hopes to inspire in the viewer empathy, curiosity and interest in ocean ecology. Receiving her BFA in glass from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1993, Rhoads earned her MFA in glass from Alfred University, New York in 2001. She has been an Artist in Residence at the Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle, Washington, and the recipient of numerous awards, including the Doug and Dale Anderson Scholarship, The Anne Gould Hauberg Award, and a Fulbright Scholarship for the study of sculpture in Venice, Italy. She has exhibited throughout the United States and abroad. Her work can be found in many collections, including the Seattle Art Museum; the Toyama Institute of Glass in Toyama, Japan; the Glasmuseum in Ebeltoft, Denmark; Shanghai Museum of Glass, China; and The Corning Museum of Glass. She maintains a studio in Seattle, Washington. “The cold, deep green waters of Puget Sound are a more recent source of inspiration in my work. Since moving to the Northwest over two decades ago, my fascination extended from coral colonies to kelp forests. Seaweed's pliable forms continually inspire me—they stretch up from the depths, undulate in the shallows, and lie on tidal surfaces. Aquatic life infuses my sculptures with animated forms, sparkling surfaces and faceted exoskeletons.” In 2025, Rhoads will continue to work on a community generated art project called Fused Together (2021-2025), for which she is the lead artist. She shepards stained glass windows made by the public that are donated to Tacoma libraries. She will also participate in group shows including Habatat's Glass Coast show at Ringling School of the Arts in Sarasota, Florida, and Women Who Make Glass at the Vashon Center for the Arts, Vashon, Washington, in March 2025. Of her work Rhoads states: “I desire my work to be emotionally affective—that it evoke for audiences a similar sense of wonder in our blue planet that continues to inspire me. And even, perhaps, to instill a desire to conserve our fragile aquatic ecosystems.”
Week 2!!! “Our first year of marriage was good for Brad , but not for Marilyn.“ -Brad Rhoads, co-founder of Grace Marriage. If you ignore your houseplant what will happen? If you don't feed and care for the family pet, what will happen? What about your marriage? Your spouse? On this weeks show, Kurt and Chad welcome Pastor Brad Rhoads and licensed counselor Nathan Thompson to discuss Brad's ministry to churches (Grace Marriage https://gracemarriage.com ) to talk about grace in marriage on week 2 of a 2 show series on marriage. The majority of energy and focus on marriage ministries is either on pre-marital (before you get married) or crisis marriage (when things are headed in the wrong direction). There is a massive gap in the church these days as it relates to ministering to marriages to keep them healthy. Brad shares his testimony of how the first year of marriage set the tone for the birth of the ministry. He and his wife Marilyn realized they were in a performance based marriage instead of a grace based marriage. The Bible says we are saved by grace through faith but what about your marriage? Do you give your wife the same grace that you've received?

Pilates is the path forward for many people who have been active and are experiencing back and shoulder issues. Shane Rhoads of Movement Med talks to us about his journey and how he became interested in the field of Pilates. This interest fueled his desire to start a business encompassing Pilates and other forms of self-care that help people to "grow older with gusto!" Tune in as he also explores the importance of finding qualified instructors to maximize the benefits of Pilates, especially if you are already a senior. --- Watch the episode here Listen to the podcast here The Beauty Of Pilates With Shane K. Rhoads Welcome to Growing Older with Gusto. We have another exciting guest who's growing older with Gusto and helping others to do that too. My personal experience as I'm growing older is the need for Pilates to keep my back in tip-top shape so I can enjoy doing some of the activities I love, like biking, swimming, and playing golf. Our guest is Shane Keith Rhoads. He's a professional trainer who turned his background in education into a Pilates, rehab, and medical exercise studio and a business, which he calls Med Movement. The business that he started in 2017 is unique in that he has created an environment for people to experience Pilates and other types of rehab exercises. He has a lot to share about his evolution, so let's bring him on. Welcome to the show, Shane. Thanks for having me. Getting Into Pilates My pleasure. In talking to you, I know you started in a way that is probably a little bit more unconventional than somebody starting a Pilates studio. Could you talk about how you got into the business of integrating body and mind? I'll go backward to tell you where the first light-up moment is. I've been in fitness for probably over 30 years. I started when I was a sophomore in college at Goodyear Fitness Center and Corporate Fitness. My major was Exercise Physiology and then Sports Medicine, working with athletes. I was an athlete at the time, so I was enamored with working with athletes. In grad school, I was a strength and conditioning coach for college sports teams and an athletic trainer, the guys who take care of injuries and tape ankles. I had to put a lot of hours in and I had very limited time. I asked them, “Can I count my weight room strength coach hours as sports medicine hours?” They're like, “No, but if you become the last-phase rehab guy in the weight room, we'll count those hours.” I fell in love with working with people in that last transition from injury to full health again. That kept me still in sports. I went into professional baseball after that and had a private business after that. I also did some other things. At some point, I remember reading an article about Pilates. What year was that, would you say? 1989, I was in school. The reason I asked is that I'm hooked on Pilates. I know from talking to people that Pilates has evolved from when Joseph Pilates introduced it to the world, from being classical and helping dancers to being part of a rehab program. I was curious. 1996, 1997, I was looking for some new avenue and I came across an article. As I was saying, Pilates was starting to be in the public eye, but more from celebrities doing it, and it was on TV. I saw this article on rehabilitation in the Pilates setting, Brent Anderson and Polestar Pilates. It clicked. It's like this system and equipment can allow me to do almost everything with someone. It's a long-term longevity-type exercise routine. It's non-impactful. It works on all the mobility and stability you need, and there's a lot of variety. It's something you can do for a lifetime. That appealed to me because I can help rehab people, or help them with their medical conditions and get fit. I can keep doing it until they're 100 years old. We have a client here who's 96. When did that client start doing Pilates? I never asked her. She works with one of the other instructors. It appealed to me in that way.

"The voice asked at Eddie Tomlinson's elbow, 'Is this seat free?' Eddie nodded, and hardly looking around, picked up his hat which he had carelessly put on the seat at his side. I love power couples, and when I saw Sarah and her husband Chris, the duo behind We Are the Rhoads, featured in Santa Barbara Magazine, I instantly knew I wanted to meet them. Successful commercial photographers, married, and raising three boys, Sarah has had to choose her own path to make it all work, and she's never been happier. I loved this conversation about her journey, what brings her joy, and how to make it in Los Angeles. I'm sure you will, too!
“And so whenever I would see that something was unfair or unjust, even as a kid, I was always calling it out.”
I know this is going to be a real surprise, but saying "good morning" is now racist. We'll let the Rhoads's scholar explain. The Wall Street Journal releases an article proclaiming that Joe Biden is senile and everyone is flipping out. I just ask why everyone is flipping out. And California continues to devolve into a craphole. You won't believe what criminals are stealing now.

Are you struggling in your marriage? Do you feel like you continue to get offended at your spouse? For Brad and Marilyn, the honeymoon was over before the honeymoon was over. They both found themselves disillusioned and disappointed. So many of us live in a performance based marriage and focus on what we do or our spouse does. We also live too much on the surface and keep score. We need to shift from an offense mentality to a grace and help mentality. Grace and love make better change agents than pressure and consequence. Hear this powerful testimony and beautiful insight and wisdom from the Bible to bring grace into your marriage.“For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” ~Romans 6:14“For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.” ~James 2:3Grace Marriage website: https://gracemarriage.com/our-team/To purchase The Grace Marriage: https://www.amazon.com/Grace-Marriage-Intentionality-Transform-Relationship/dp/0802421482/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1V0LO6W09WDZ0&keywords=the+grace+marriage+by+brad+and+marilyn+rhoads&qid=1707574520&sprefix=grace+marriage%2Caps%2C284&sr=8-1Heidi's website: https://heidimortensonlmft.com/If you are in crisis, help is available by call or text 1-800-273-8255 24/7. Brad Rhoads founded Grace Marriage in 2015 to help churches and couples prioritize marriage. Prior to this, Brad was a practicing attorney for 22 years. He served as a marriage pastor at their local church, where he noted the nationwide absence of an intentional, ongoing strategy to keep couples on a trajectory of growth. In this episode, Brad Rhoads shares his personal journey of feeling pressure to perform in his Christian life. He talks about how a friend helped him understand the concept of relying on the grace of God instead of his own efforts. Brad Rhoads explains the freedom he experienced when he realized that it's okay to not be perfect and that he could enjoy life without the heavy burden of constantly striving. He also discusses how this mindset shift improved his relationships and allowed him to embrace imperfection. One of the key factors that they emphasized is the importance of prioritizing quality time in marriage. The busyness of life often takes a toll on couples, causing them to go through the motions and lose sight of what truly matters. With kids' activities, work demands, and financial pressures, it becomes easy to neglect the relationship and settle for a mediocre marriage. Many couples desire a better marriage, but they lack the knowledge and guidance on how to achieve it. They may have tried attending conferences or seeking advice, but nothing seems to bring about lasting change. As a result, they resign themselves to the status quo, accepting that their marriage is simply tolerable. However, Brad and Larry argue that there is hope for a better marriage. The answer is not as difficult as it may seem, but many couples have not been given the tools or coaching to break free from their stagnant situation. The key is to find the answer and receive the necessary guidance to have a fulfilling and joyful marriage with one's best friend. www.thedadedge.com/friday140 www.gracemarriage.com/our-story

Either something you're working on to develop yourself or your people. • Where can listeners find you online? • Before we wrap our episodes up, we always like to ask our guests, do you have a quote or saying that during times of adversity or challenge, you will tend to revert to this quote if for any reason you get derailed or you get off track? This quote kind of helps you to get back on track. Do you have one of those? Highlights Joanna's Journey Me: Could you share with our listeners a little bit about your journey? How it is that you got from where you were to where you are today? Joanna shared that she can tell you that no one as a little girl dreams or as a kid dreams someday I'm going to be working in insurance. So, most people decided, stumble into it somewhere along the way. And hers was a work study position when she was in college as a part of her financial aid, she was given a job working in the Employee Benefits Office at Florida State. And that ended up taking her into their insurance office where they administered their insurance, how their employees got insurance. So, when she got out of grad school, and was looking for a job, she had this insurance knowledge of how the insurance space worked and that landed her with a position of a company that is today known as Willis Towers Watson. It was well as Willis at the time and became just Willis last year, and Madonna. And now has added new names again. So, that has taken her down a path, she's worked for insurance brokers, insurance agencies, insurance companies, third party administrators, she's been on all different sides of the business. And about 20 years ago, she had the opportunity to jump to the other side of the business, and work in insurance technology, where insurance historically has been a very paper based, manual, difficult industry where everything is delivered by paper, every form is completed with pen and paper. And this company was working to build automation with insurance producers, the people that actually sell the insurance, the insurance agencies and the insurance companies, and how they communicate with the State Departments of Insurance. And that's pretty much how she ended up where she is today, just have grown over time. What is Rhoads Online? Me: Can you tell our listeners a little bit about Rhoads Online? What is Rhoads Online? And what value do they bring to their customer base? Joanna shared that just as she said that that insurtech that she went to 20 years ago, Rhoads is in that same space. So, what they do is help insurance companies and agencies predominantly connect those insurance producers, the people that are selling insurance, get them contracted, and make sure that they are appropriately licensed and credentialed to sell the insurance that they're selling before they do. Because if an individual sells a policy and they are not properly credentialed, they don't have all of the licenses contracts, and the insurance company hasn't told the state that that person is selling for them, then the insurance company gets in trouble. So, making that all of those ducks are in a row and everything is in order, it keeps the insurance company off the front page of the Wall Street Journal and allows them to sell compliantly and make sure that the consumer is protected when they do it. Being Proactive Than Reactive to Ensure You Maximize on Customer Success Me: Now, a big part of what you do is customer success. And of course, that's typically ensuring that the client is getting exactly what they want and desire. Not sure if this is a call that you made, or it's just something that you live by as a mantra, but it states, “You can't just be reactive, you have to be proactive, predicting their needs before they even realize it.” So, could you tell us maybe three things you've seen as recurring themes that come across being more proactive than reactive in the space that you operate in to ensure that you're able to maximize on customer success? Joanna shared that she thinks this is in any industry, it's not specific to what she does. But customer service to her is something that is tactical and reactive. If you think about customer service, and customer service is something we all interact with, probably with a little bit of dread and we hope that it's a good experience that we're opening a Chatbot or we're sending in an email or opening a ticket, or calling an 800 number. And we hope that for whatever reason we're calling that number that whatever the issue is, is resolved. We want it to be resolved quickly and painlessly and to whatever satisfaction we hoped it would be. And again, it's very reactive, it is in response to whatever I as the consumer is bringing forward to that company, or as the customer, if it's B2B or B2C, it doesn't matter, customer service is about fixing that one little thing that the person calling in has announced needs fixing. Where customers success to her is, is the opposite of that. It isn't reactive, and it isn't tactical. The important thing is that we're being proactive, that we're getting in front of the customer, and being intentional about having strategic conversations. Because as the company is moving forward, and as they're growing, they want to make sure that that path forward and that growth is aligned with the path forward and the growth of their customers. If their development team builds a brand new piece of functionality, and no one uses it, then that has been a waste of time of their development team number one, but also the opportunity costs that's lost, because they didn't build something that their customers would have really liked, what they would have used and what they would have needed. So, it is all about being proactive, and being strategic. And what she means by strategic is simply looking further ahead. It's not what's happening in the moment right now, it's where are we going together and making sure that those things stay aligned as they continue to move forward. Because what her goals are and what she's trying to accomplish in six months, a year, three years, five years, those are going to keep changing as time moves forward. So, making sure that they keep having those conversations, leaving those lines of communication open, sharing what's going on in the industry, and what's going on in their customers' business, as well as what's going on in her business, that's how they all move forward and stay aligned. Organization Setting Themselves Apart and Giving Customers More Than They Expect Me: Now, you've been an insurance for over two decades, Joanna, and I'm sure you've seen lots of ups and downs, hills and gullies kind of thing. But in your own experience, especially as we're moving forward embarking on a new calendar year, what are maybe one or two things that you believe as an organization, especially in the insurance industry, specifically, you would need to be focusing on to ensure that you're setting yourself apart and truly giving the customer more than they expect, and kind of living to what you were saying, trying to predict their needs before they know they even need it. Joanna stated that she really thinks the big thing, especially in the insurance industry, is that the Googles and Amazons of the world have set an expectation for across all industries, that technology is easy to use that “I should be able to get the answers to my questions with the click of a button and with the phone that's in my hand, I shouldn't have to go to the horror, a real computer, I should be able to from a mobile device, be able to do anything that I should need to be able to do with any business partner of mine from my phone.” So, she really thinks that that expectation is where the insurance industry needs to focus. There's so much talk about AI and Blockchain and Chatbots and all of the magical technology that's out there. But if we can't meet the basic table stakes of being able to get a quote for insurance from her phone, then that insurance company will not be able to succeed. If she is standing on the side of the road and I live in Michigan in certain times of the year and they hit deer, it happens and if she's on the side of the road because she's just hit a deer or had any kind of an accident. If she can't pull out her phone and initiate that claim from her phone, she's not going to stay with that insurance company because they haven't met her need when she needed them. So, being able to meet those basic needs from core technology is where the insurance industry needs to focus right now. App, Website or Tool that Joanna Absolutely Can't Live Without in Her Business When asked about an online resource that she cannot live without in her business, Joanna shared that she has a couple. Because of what she does, the CRM that they use, that's how she keeps her pulse on what's going on in their business. So, they happen to use Salesforce. But she's used HubSpot in the past, and there are other great CRMs out there. But the most important thing is having one central repository to be able to see everything that's going on to the lifecycle of your customer. If you're working in customer experience and you can't see what's going on with your customers, and you're trying to use an Excel spreadsheet or some other form of technology, there's just no way to get that 360 degree view. But personally, within customer success, there is an amazing website called kapta.com. And kapta.com is a technology that integrates with your CRM, not what she's endorsing here, she's sure it's great, but she's not actually used that technology, but the number of resources that Kapta has on their website to help people that work in key account management, whatever form of that that is you work in, they have so many resources available to help account managers be successful with their customers, and to help organisations and leaders know how to help their account managers be successful. So, Kapta is amazing. And then specifically in her industry, insurtech Connect, ITC has a six things newsletter that is just incredible. It keeps you informed of everything that could be going on in the insurance industry that has anything to do with technology. And it's an interesting read for anyone. Books that Have Had the Biggest Impact on Joanna When asked about books that have had a great impact her, Joanna shared that there are two that she finds herself going back to over and over and over again. And the first one is Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action by Simon Sinek, it helps from an organizational perspective, as well as on an individual perspective. Whether you're working with customers, with employees, “Knowing the Why of why you do what you do.” And a common theme in her world is, it's not about you. It's not about her, it's not about what she's doing. It's about the customer, and it's about the employee and why they do what they do. And if we can be other focus and know why people are motivated to do the things that they do. And to know what our Why is and why we get up each morning and why we're helping our customers and why these things matter. She's listened to Simon's podcast, and it's just brilliant. And that all started with Start with Why for her. The second one is a book called Unleashed: The Unapologetic Leader's Guide to Empowering Everyone Around You, it's by Anne Morriss and Frances Frei. And it's all about empowerment, and when you're working in account management or customer success or customer service, this is a tough job, it's a tough job where the people in this space spend a lot of time getting yelled at oftentimes, and they're trying to make the customer's world a better place. And when you can come from a perspective of empowering those people to be successful, to have the ability to make the decisions that makes the customer's world a better place, it's better for the customer, it's better for the company, and it's better for the human that gets to make those decisions. If they sit there all day every day saying, “I'm sorry, I don't know. But I'll check on that and get back to you.” That's a very difficult space to be in. So, being able to empower people is their greatest version of themselves, it's really powerful and it's really a game changer. What Joanna is Really Excited About Now! When asked about something she's really excited about, Joanna shared that this year, she got the opportunity to spend some time really diving into the Enneagram. And if the listeners aren't familiar with the Enneagram, it's a personality assessment type of profile that looks at why people behave the way that they do. So, Enneagram have types, you do an assessment, it gives you a direction on what your type may be. And then you do some more homework and you confirm that that is your type. And Beatrice Chestnut, wrote a book called The Complete Enneagram: 27 Paths to Greater Self-Knowledge. And she's really had the opportunity to pour into that and what she loves about it is it doesn't matter what part of your life you're looking at, whether it's about your employees, your boss, your co-worker, any other co-workers, your spouse, your kids, family members, customers, it doesn't matter, being able to get insight into what charges people up, what gets them to behave the way that they do. And then when they're doing well, why you might see some other characteristics where when they're feeling stressed, or things are difficult, you can look for other traits that might come in. It has been incredibly insightful, and she feels like reading Beatrice's book has been a college level course on this. But the amount of insight that it's given into people. And then the other thing that is maybe a little bit more approachable to people rather than reading a giant textbook is Ian Cron has a podcast called Typology that is just fascinating, where he talks to people with different Enneagram types, and about how they interact with the world. And it's just fascinating and it's been so much fun to learn this year. Where Can We Find Joanna Online LinkedIn – Joanna-Hagelberger Website – www.rhoadsonline.com Quote or Saying that During Times of Adversity Joanna Uses When asked about a quote or saying that she tends to revert to, Joanna shared that she does have, Maya Angelou, which she's sure many of our guests have quoted, because she's very quotable. This is how she hears it in her head is that, “People will forget what you said and did but people will never forget how you made them feel.” And she feels like when we're dealing, this is all about customer experience. And if we can just remember that how we make our customers feel and how they experience us makes all the difference in the world. Me: Amazing. Thank you so much, Joanna, for taking time out of your very busy schedule, and hopping on this podcast with us today and sharing all of the great insights that you've learned and just best practices that you've taken on as an individual as a customer service practitioner in your own right, especially in your industry. Feedback & Shout Outs Stephanie Skrocki - Thank you for the email re: Episode 237 Featured Content Welcome to Episode 238 of the House of #EdTech Podcast! In this episode, I share my recent appearance on an episode of Teachers on Fire, hosted by Tim Cavey. I participated in a live debate addressing a highly relevant topic in education: "Should student phones be banned from our K-12 schools?" I debated Dr. Matt Rhoads, who brought his extensive experience in education and technology to this thought-provoking discussion. Debate Overview: The debate revolves around using cell phones in K-12 educational settings, weighing the benefits and drawbacks. Our guests offer diverse viewpoints: My Perspective: Advocating against banning cell phones, I emphasizes the importance of leveraging these powerful tools for learning and teaching responsible digital citizenship. I highlighted the potential of cell phones for research, collaboration, creativity, and communication. Dr. Matt Rhoads's Viewpoint: Supporting the ban, Dr. Rhoads underscores concerns about declining academic performance, mental health crises, cyberbullying, and distractions caused by cell phones. He argues for using school-issued devices to teach digital citizenship while maintaining a focused learning environment. Discussion Highlights: Learning Tools vs. Distractions: The debate delves into whether cell phones are indispensable educational tools or sources of distraction and decline in academic performance. Digital Citizenship and Responsibility: I argue that school cell phones offer opportunities to teach digital responsibility, while Matt suggests that the risks outweigh the benefits. Mental Health and Bullying: Matt raises concerns about the impact of cell phones on student mental health and bullying, advocating for a safer school environment free from these influences. Communication and Safety: The conversation touches on the role of cell phones in ensuring student safety and communication, especially in emergencies. Conclusion: The episode concludes without a definitive resolution but provides listeners with a comprehensive understanding of both sides. The guests agree on the need for community involvement in decision-making regarding technology in schools.
