A new study suggests that the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs may have originated from the outer parts of the solar system. And, invasive spotted lanternflies often lay eggs on vehicles and shipped goods. Now researchers are training dogs to sniff them out before they hatch.Asteroid That Killed The Dinosaurs Was A Carbon-Rich RockAround 66 million years ago, an asteroid slammed into the Earth, blasted debris everywhere, plummeted the planet into cold darkness, and ended the age of dinosaurs. (Though birds survived, of course.)It might be the most famous disaster in our planet's history, but scientists still have plenty of questions about it. Like, what was the asteroid made of? And where did it come from? A new study in the journal Science offers up some long-awaited answers.Guest host Rachel Feltman speaks with study author Dr. Mario Fischer-Gödde, a geochemist at the University of Cologne in Germany.Training Dogs To Stop The Spread Of Spotted LanternfliesIn 10 years, the spotted lanternfly has gone from non-existent in the U.S. to being established in at least 16 states. They're quite distinct: The adults measure about an inch long, they've got striking red and black markings, and are, as the name suggests, spotted. And they've got a worrisome tendency to chow down on certain plants, including grapevines, and some fruit and hardwood trees.Spotted lanternflies are able to spread so effectively in part because they tend to lay eggs on things that travel from state to state: shipping supplies, vehicles, and lumber. There's a new tactic to detect spotted lanternfly eggs before they can hatch: training dogs to sniff them out. Guest host Rachel Feltman speaks to two researchers behind this project: Dr. Nathan Hall, director of the Canine Olfaction Research and Education Laboratory at Texas Tech in Lubbock, and Dr. Erica Feuerbacher, associate professor of applied animal welfare and behavior at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.Read the full story here.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. In this episode, Dr. Nathan Hall and Dr. Paola Tiedemann discuss their research on canine detection applications and the use of olfactometers. They explain that olfactometers are scientific instruments used to provide measured and standardized odors to animals. The researchers have been working on miniaturizing olfactometers and making them more rugged for various applications. They also discuss the merging of technology and dogs, predicting that within a few years, cameras and olfactometers could be used for initial dog training. They also explore the importance of the handler-dog relationship and the potential for technology to provide confirmation of the dog's findings. In this part of the conversation, Cameron and Paola discuss the importance of unifying the protocols and procedures used in scent detection. They emphasize the need to consider variables such as the length of time, collection methods, and the type of container used. They also discuss the plausibility of dogs remembering scents in real-world environments and the challenges of training dogs to match samples with different variations. They touch on the impact of factors like stress, medication, and age on human scent and the need for further research in these areas. They also highlight the importance of training dogs on a variety of targets and distractors to improve their ability to generalize and avoid false positives. Finally, they discuss the challenges of introducing new samples and variations in training and the need for ongoing evaluation and testing. In this final part of the conversation, Cameron Ford and Nathan Hall discuss the importance of challenging and critically evaluating detection dog training methods. They emphasize the need for accurate and informed decision-making in operational scenarios. They also explore the impact of odor concentration on a dog's ability to generalize and detect targets. The conversation then shifts to the research on firearms detection, including the significance of gunshot residue (GSR) and the volume of odor. They discuss the challenges of training dogs on different concentrations of odor and the importance of training on the actual weapon rather than just the powder. Finally, they touch on the ongoing research on ghost guns and the need to understand the odor profiles of 3D printed firearms.Joint Symposium for Working K9s April 7 -10 2025 http://jswk9.comFord K9 for everything Detection Dogs go visit http://www.fordk9.com

This Day in Legal History: Watergate Burglary Trial BeginsOn January 8, 1973, a trial commenced that would eventually etch its name into the annals of American legal history. Seven men stood accused in a Washington DC courtroom, all linked to the now-infamous break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters, located in the Watergate Hotel. This event, which unfolded on June 17, 1972, sparked a series of revelations that would have profound implications for American politics and the legal system. The trial, led by Judge John J. Sirica, uncovered a complex web of political espionage and sabotage. Evidence presented during the proceedings pointed to the involvement of high-ranking officials in the Nixon administration. This raised alarming questions about the abuse of political power at the highest levels of government. The defendants, including operatives of the Committee to Re-Elect the President (CRP), faced charges ranging from burglary to conspiracy and wiretapping. The prosecution's case was bolstered by the discovery of a secret taping system in the White House, which provided crucial evidence. These tapes would later play a central role in unraveling the cover-up efforts by Nixon's aides. The trial set in motion a chain of events that led to extensive investigations by the media and a Senate committee. These investigations eventually unearthed a pattern of illegal activities sanctioned and covered up by the administration. The revelations from the trial and subsequent inquiries brought to light the vulnerabilities in the American democratic system, especially regarding the checks and balances intended to prevent such abuses of power. The impact of this trial extended beyond the immediate legal consequences for the accused. It prompted a nationwide introspection on the integrity of political processes and the accountability of elected officials. The Watergate scandal, as it came to be known, ultimately led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon on August 8, 1974, marking the first time a sitting U.S. President resigned from office. This trial, more than just a legal proceeding, became a symbol of the struggle for transparency and ethical governance. It underscored the importance of an independent judicial system and a free press in upholding democratic principles. The events of January 8, 1973, and their aftermath, thus remain a crucial chapter in the history of American jurisprudence and governance. The current term of the US Supreme Court is shaping up to be historically significant with the addition of a case determining former President Donald Trump's eligibility for the 2024 presidential ballot in Colorado. The docket includes high-profile cases challenging the power of federal regulators and expanding gun rights, alongside another significant case on abortion access.Experts like Lisa Blatt and Stephen Vladeck express their astonishment at the gravity and unprecedented nature of the cases before the Court. The term initially focused on the administrative state, but the rapid addition of cases involving Trump and abortion has amplified its importance. The Court will consider overturning the Chevron doctrine, which gives federal agencies leeway to interpret ambiguous laws, impacting a wide range of regulatory areas. The Trump-related case, Trump v. Anderson, stems from a Colorado Supreme Court ruling about his alleged incitement of the January 6 Capitol attack, raising both legal and political stakes. Additionally, the Court will address whether federal prosecutors can charge January 6 defendants under an Enron-era statute in Fischer v. United States, indirectly affecting Trump. In the realm of abortion, the Court's docket includes a case on the FDA's rescinding of safety measures for medication abortion in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, potentially limiting access to the most common abortion method. Another case, Moyle v. United States and Idaho v. United States, concerns whether hospitals can perform abortions in emergencies, with Idaho's prohibition currently in effect. The Court's agenda also covers gun rights, with cases like United States v. Rahimi, which could temper gun rights expansions regarding domestic violence restraining orders. Additionally, the Trump administration's bump stock ban, enacted after the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, will be reviewed.Other significant matters include disputes over social media regulation, a major opioid settlement, and a corporate tax overhaul law from 2017. With such a diverse and controversial docket, Chief Justice Roberts faces the challenge of managing these pivotal cases, each potentially reshaping major legal and societal landscapes.Big Supreme Court Term Now Historic with Trump, Abortion CasesLaw enforcement and court administrators are intensifying their focus on courtroom security following a series of violent incidents and threats across the US. These events include a shooting at the Colorado Supreme Court, an attack on a Nevada judge, and a string of bomb threats that led to the closure of judicial buildings nationwide, all occurring within a single week.Sheriff James Brown, chair of the National Sheriff's Association's committee on court security, emphasizes the importance of resource allocation and strategic placement of officers in courtrooms to prevent hostility and ensure safety. However, the effectiveness of these measures often hinges on the availability of sufficient staffing. Courts across the US, from New York to Texas and Florida to Illinois, are consistently preparing for threats, but the recent surge in violent incidents has heightened concerns and the sense of vulnerability within the court community.Nathan Hall, a consultant specializing in courthouse planning and security, notes that while court security is a long-standing concern, the recent incidents have escalated the urgency to strengthen protective measures. In response, court leaders are seeking additional safeguards against potential violence. For instance, in Ohio's Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas, Judge Brendan J. Sheehan has initiated discussions with the local sheriff to review courtroom security protocols. This increase in violence against judges is part of a broader trend of threats against government officials, as public trust in institutions wanes. Attorney General Merrick Garland highlighted a "deeply disturbing spike" in such threats. In New York, for example, there was a 66% increase in judicial threats and related incidents in 2023 compared to the previous year. This rise has led to a significant recruitment of court officers, with plans for further expansion in 2024.Court personnel across the country are feeling the impact of these increased threats. As political tensions rise in the lead-up to the 2024 elections, court administrators may seek more funding from state legislatures for enhanced security measures and additional personnel. Kevin Taylor, Marshal for the First District Court of Appeal in Florida, emphasizes the importance of communication and strategy among court security officers, using recent incidents as case studies to improve preparedness and response.‘Shell-shocked' Courts Review Security After Threats, ViolenceFisherBroyles, a prominent virtual law firm, is facing a significant exodus of partners due to dissatisfaction with leadership over expense handling and a tax accounting error. The firm's corporate and litigation chairs, Michael Pierson and Joel Ferdinand, left to start their own firm, Pierson Ferdinand, potentially taking up to 130 former FisherBroyles partners with them. This move could represent nearly half of FisherBroyles' workforce and be among the largest law firm spinoffs in recent history. The departures underscore the economic challenges faced by virtual law firms, which operate with minimal overhead but need to provide sufficient resources to partners. FisherBroyles' model, where partners keep 80% of the revenue they generate, has led to grievances about bearing costs like legal research and marketing, which some believe should be covered by the 20% revenue share returned to the firm.A significant issue contributing to the discontent was a firmwide tax problem related to California, discovered by a new accounting firm. Partners in other states were informed they would need to pay taxes to California, leading to widespread frustration and sparking the exodus. In response to these issues, Pierson Ferdinand is implementing changes, such as a profit-sharing plan and substantial investments in technology, contrasting with FisherBroyles' approach. FisherBroyles itself is also planning a profit-sharing plan this year. This isn't the first tax-related problem for FisherBroyles; in 2014, they acknowledged failing to file timely taxes in Georgia and offered to reimburse partners for any resulting penalties.Despite these challenges, FisherBroyles' founders express confidence in their firm's future and plan to continue providing world-class legal services. The recent upheaval points to the evolving nature of virtual law firms and the balance they must strike between operational efficiency and partner satisfaction.FisherBroyles Exodus Shows Rift Over Virtual Firm Profits, TaxesThe corruption trial of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and its former leader Wayne LaPierre is set to begin in a Manhattan courtroom. This follows LaPierre's recent resignation as the NRA's chief executive, citing health reasons. The trial, led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, accuses the NRA and LaPierre of misusing millions of dollars for luxuries and other improper practices, including unapproved conflicts of interest and no-show contracts.James asserts that these actions violated state laws governing nonprofits. The NRA, however, denies any wrongdoing, claiming political targeting by James and arguing that the lawsuit violates their First Amendment rights.Jury selection for the trial began on January 2, with LaPierre in attendance, and opening statements may also start on the day the trial begins. The NRA is currently facing financial challenges, with a significant drop in revenue and membership in recent years.LaPierre, who has led the NRA since 1991 and transformed it into a major political force advocating for gun rights, is expected to testify. Other defendants include John Frazer, the secretary and general counsel, and former finance chief Wilson Phillips. Joshua Powell, a former high-ranking NRA official, settled separately, agreeing to reimburse $100,000 and admitting to misuse of NRA assets. The trial, expected to last six weeks, will be presided over by Justice Joel Cohen. It will focus on the financial misconduct of the individual defendants and determine any repayments to the NRA. The jury will also make recommendations on Frazer's position, while the judge will decide on any removals. The case was allowed to proceed to trial after an appeals court found substantial evidence of mismanagement within the NRA, despite their resistance to leadership changes.NRA, Wayne LaPierre head for New York graft trial after his resignation | Reuters Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

Today On the Dogwatch we have the rare opportunity to talk with Nathan Hall, head of the Canine Olfaction Lab at Texas Tech. Nathan is not only a dog owner, but is also someone who studies dog behavior, has a vast knowledge of the canine literature, and does research on their behavior and olfactory abilities in the lab.In our conversation, we discuss how a dog's nose is structured and how it works, the myths and misperceptions about how a dog's nose functions and compares to the human nose, and the ways that we as humans train dogs to use their noses to detect substances such as explosives. We also consider the ways in which dogs can detect and mitigate human stress, and also the biases that we have on which dogs have the best noses–attention pug owners! Ultimately, we get perspective from a leader in canine research who helps us think about the noses of our dogs and their behavior.

How can you develop yourself as an autistic adult in a neurotypical world? Should you take advice from the general media or even close ones? How can you craft a life and persona that reflects your dreams or ideals? Nathan Hall (@ThePhysioBox) is an ex-professional Taekwondo fighter, NHS high-security hospital ward worker, and physiotherapist based out of Manchester, UK. With a master's degree in strength and conditioning and a flair for lifestyle coaching, Nathan seeks to share his knowledge of sports with the world. Nathan's Website - https://www.thephysiobox.net/ // My Links - https://linktr.ee/thomashenleyUK This podcast episode is filled with useful lessons for Autistic adults who are struggling to move forward with their lives and manage the expectations of the neurotypical world held against them. Nathan Hall describes his journey to an Autism and ADHD diagnosis in his early 30s, and the two bond over their mutual experiences with the world of martial arts. Nathan started his athletic journey at the young age of 5, quickly finding a special interest in the sport and an attraction to the merit-based social landscape of Taekwondo training and competition. He was a part of the 2nd cohort of professional Taekwondo fighters in the United Kingdom and received numerous decorated medals throughout his life. The two contemplate the difficulty of understanding your traits as an individual with a dual diagnosis (AuDHD), and how these labels can be used as support from the medical system, but also a source of identity and validation for many people. Thomas raises how the social systems and norms in place can make it difficult to advocate for your needs and succeed in life as an autistic person. Nathan is a big advocate for self-employment, touting the autistic experience of hyper-focussing on subjects of interest as a useful way to specialise within the working world. The conversation around the importance of knowing yourself and having a clear goal in life provided insight into how a growth mindset allows you to craft a life and an outward persona you feel best represents who you are. They talk about managing relationships with neurotypical individuals, highlight the common phase of ‘hating neurotypicals' that many autistic people experience due to negative school experiences… and also how the traps that come with trusting and assuming the best intentions can end badly. Thomas describes shades of grey involved with all aspects of life, and how rigid life outlooks or mottos can be very ineffective for the complex experience of life.  They end on an inspirational and validating conversation about how socially set milestones, social expectations, and social media can warp your view of what you should be achieving at different ages in life. It can often feel suffocating, demoralising, and pressuring to fit into the molds others prescribe to us… often these can stop us from living life at our own pace and creating the beginning of our own success stories in life. We see the athletes on the podium, hear the successful speakers/entrepreneurs, and get the impression their life has been perfect, with no lows, no boring/difficult months of training, and with general life success… but that's not the case and it's ok not be at your ‘peak' now. Make small incremental changes over the long term and slowly traverse the mixed box of chocolates that is life. In this episode of K9 Conservationists, Kayla Fratt speaks with Dr. Nathaniel Hall to talk about lengthy searches for conservation dogs! Discussed in this Podcast: How does a dog's sensitivity to scent affect their work? All sensory systems are learned behaviors, so there will be genetic differences and learning history differences. Because of this, what one dog smells will not be the exact same as what another dog smells. It depends on the concentration of the odor on how sensitive your dog will be to the odor. Their threshold of detection of a certain scent will increase if the concentration is reduced over time. Motivation for long searches? Performance is strongly dependent on the frequency in which targets appear Reinforcing “all clear” signals can help with motivation in the event that there aren't going to be a lot of targets for them to find. It is important to not over-reward for “all clear” because then “all clear” can start to become more rewarding than finding the scent. Make your “all clear” as equal effort as an alert response If your dog is pre-prepared for not finding targets over a long period of time, it can help avoid an extinction burst and frustration Links Mentioned in the Episode: The Canid Genome - 2012 Paper Where to find Dr. Hall: Canine Olfaction Lab | Facebook You can support the K9 Conservationists Podcast by joining our Patreon at patreon.com/k9conservationists. Ouhana shapes them to such great affect, that his first release on Random Collective was destined to called Waves. All three tracks make exceptional use of this theme, with a power, subtlety and drama you can liken to an ever-changing seashore. The energy shifts so boldly, with such great flow and ease , a truly riveting acoustic experience. OX took the title track in a totally different direction, with an intense punch and step straight out of a chase scene. Nathan Hall went full aural assault as usual building on the original parts for a deep and trippy reimagined version of Rising Tides. Artist: Nathan Hall (Canada) Label: Heimlich Musik Genre: Electronic Release Date: 19.02.2021 Kicking off 2021, Nathan Hall's Sattva EP provides three moody slow techno offerings, with Kusht, Manski and jiony on remix duties. Nathan Hall focuses on the darker side of music, with texture and atmosphere being the main subject matter of the EP. Born from short bursts of inspiration in the greyed out winters of the Pacific Northwest all original mixes are laced with pensive, apocalyptic vibes. Expect synth pads kissed by the 80s, melancholic lead parts that break through and underline hypnotic arrangements and subtle organic percussions. Kusht's remix lifts up these organic parts, supported by additional guitar lines to create his own signature version of These Days while Manski's energetic version is a gritty banger with a touch of Leftfield House. Contributing a stripped-down remix jiony is rounding out the EP as a whole by adding psychedelic elements to keep up the spirit of Nathan Hall's Sattva EP for a proper start into 2021. Your next storyteller is Lucy Roucis. We are heartbroken to say that Lucy passed away this week, after a decades-long battle with Parkinson's disease. Lucy might be best known by a broader audience for her appearance in Love & Other Drugs, but in Denver she's been a force on and off stage for years, a wickedly funny and talented actor and comedian who will be deeply missed. Lucy told a couple of stories at The Narrators, but today we're sharing her first—this story was recorded at Buntport Theater in November 2017; the theme of the night was "Under Your Skin." A special thanks to all of our sponsors—Buntport Theater Company, Illegal Pete's, From the Hip Photo, and Great Divide Brewing Company. So, last month our 10th anniversary live show was cancelled due to the coronavirus, our live show for April has also been cancelled, and we let the podcast go silent for a month. The Narrators is a storytelling show, but what we're really trying to do is build empathy and compassion for our fellow humans, and right now, that's what we're all doing—putting our empathy to the test and isolating ourselves, trying protect one another. But that doesn't mean we need to be alone. Every episode of this podcast is a little 10-minute friend, a place you can escape when you need a break from the insanity and just want to listen to someone else for a little while. So, we're back, and since the world is a little different right now, we're going to try something a little different too. For the next couple of episodes, I'm going to bring folks from our community to introduce a story they want to hear or to share a story of their own. This week, The Narrators co-host Erin Rollman joined the podcast to catch up briefly and introduce the story she most wanted to hear most. Without further ado, this week's story comes from Mitch Slevc. Mitch is a professional fake astronaut who works for the Denver Museum of Nature an Science. He shared this story in February 2020 at Buntport Theater. The theme of the evening was "Over the Top." There's a point in the story where Mitch takes his shirt off to reveal his dance crew uniform—check our website to see those photos. A special thanks to Nathan Hall for the outro music in this episode. Nathan recently released an album of music from Buntport's "Cabaret de Profundis, Or How To Sing While Ugly Crying," a production that they have not yet been able to debut. You can support Nathan and Buntport Theater by purchasing that album or one of these limited-edition t-shirts. You can subscribe and listen to The Narrators for free wherever you get your podcasts. Browse our archives for past episodes or attend one of our live shows, which take place every third Wednesday at Buntport Theater in Denver, Colorado when there's not a pandemic underway. Our favorite composer, Nathan Hall, returns to talk about another ethereal, divine Renaissance lady, Ms. Bjork. Having lived in Iceland for a year, Nathan can give us the lowdown on this small but vibrant land and the woman who in many ways represents all things Icelandic.
