Host Bart Zandbergen was joined in the podcast studio by Scott Heinila of the Optimized Advisor Podcast and Nick Jordan, Founder of Wells of Life. In 2008, Nick Jordan established the nonprofit organization Wells of Life which is dedicated to providing rural Ugandans access to safe, clean water through the installation or restoration of sustainable borehole water wells. He also instituted WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) educational programs in order to teach each village about the power of sustainability and sanitation. After installing a well in the Mityana district of Uganda, a little girl, younger than 9, approached Nick and thanked him personally for the water with happiness and an overwhelming sense of gratitude. This experience is what influenced Nick to set a goal to fund and help over 1 million people and build 1000 wells. Today, in 2021, Nick and his organization are working to do just that. Wells of Life has joined forces with a team in both Ireland and Uganda to drill and restore over 700 wells in East Africa. It is with courage, tenacity, and a close relationship with God that Nick has continued to follow the path to serve others. Today, the global water crisis affects 785 million people who lack basic access to clean and safe water. Nick is a firm believer that every drop matters and every second counts. My guest is a very fortunate cancer survivor, Nick Jordan, who is CEO and Founder, Wells of Life, Inc. a group that is committed to bringing clean water to 1,000 communities in Uganda and beyond. And as that dream is about to come true the end of this year, 2022 as we March to a Million. What that means is not only will we serve 1000 villages, but that effort to mean that we have provided clean water to 1 MM people. It has taken us 12 years to get here and our plan is to reach 2 MM people served with water by year-end 2025. Show Notes  Today, our recording day is March 17th or St Patrick's Day, so I have brought on an Irish man to talk a bit about why we celebrate St Patrick's Day and then talk a lot about poverty in the world. My guest is a very fortunate cancer survivor, Nick Jordan, who is CEO and Founder, Wells of Life, Inc. a group that is committed to bringing clean water to 1,000 communities in Uganda and beyond. And as that dream is about to come true the end of this year, 2022 as we March to a Million. What that means is not only will we serve 1000 villages, but that effort to mean that we have provided clean water to 1 MM people. It has taken us 12 years to get here and our plan is to reach 2 MM people served with water by year-end 2025. Jordan, PhD, Professor of Agronomy and Plant Genetics, University of Minnesota Website | @UMN_AgroPlant Abstract Agricultural diversification is widely seen as a critical element of future agricultural development development. One important concept of diversification is continuous-living-cover (CLC) agriculture, which integrates multiple crops to create diversified agroecosystems in which soils are covered by living plants across time and space continuously. Compared to agroecosystems that provide more limited cover of soil, CLC agriculture can greatly improve production of many ecosystem services from agroecosystems. To go to scale, CLC agriculture requires crops that not only provide continuous living cover but are viable in economic and social terms. At present, lack of such crops is strongly limiting the scaling of CLC agriculture. Gene editing (GE) might provide a powerful tool for developing the crops needed to expand CLC agriculture to scale. To assess this possibility, a multi-sector deliberative group deliberated the merits of GE—relative to alternative plant-breeding methods—as means for improving crops for CLC agriculture. The group included many of the sectors whose support is necessary to scaling agricultural innovations, including actors involved in markets, finance, policy, and R&D. Views of participants were expressed in interviews and deliberative workshops. Many in the group were enthusiastic about prospects for applications of GE to develop crops for CLC agriculture, relative to alternative plant-breeding options. However, the group noted many issues, risks, and contingencies, all of which are likely to require responsive and adaptive management. Conversely, if these issues, risks, and contingencies cannot be managed, it appears unlikely that a strong multi-sector base of support can be sustained for such applications, limiting their scaling. Emerging methods for responsible innovation and scaling have potential to manage these issues, risks, and contingencies; we propose that outcomes from GE crops for CLC agriculture are likely to be much improved if these emerging methods are used to govern such projects. Show Notes  Today is an unusually important show. My friend and CEO of Wells of Life, Nick Jordan, spent all of 2021 battling with Stage 4 colon and lung cancer. The odds of survival were not good. But let's come to the end of the story right away. After 2 surgeries, 4 months of chemotherapy, 75 radiation treatments, 2 days of fasting before every chemo session, and a bout with Shingles he was declared cancer free in late December 2021. During the months of chemotherapy, radiation, and times of surgery, Nick had only his faith, his family, and his friends to lean on. And truthfully, all three were desperately needed because the reality of impending death makes you realize the shortness of life, therefore forcing you to re-evaluate everything you do and believe. In Psalm 90, Moses writes, “Lord, teach us how short our lives really are so that we may be wise.” We have much to learn from someone who has been close to death. Today, let's discover the value of life from the perspective of very recent cancer survivor.
