Have you ever counted calories before? What’s one small change you’d like to make in how you eat? Today, Jay invites geneticist and author Giles Yeo to challenge one of the most persistent beliefs in modern health culture: the idea that all calories are created equal. Giles is a professor at the University of Cambridge, specializing in the study of how genes influence appetite and body weight. He is the author of Gene Eating and Why Calories Don’t Count, both of which challenge conventional diet myths through the lens of cutting-edge science. Giles is also a science communicator and host of the podcast Dr. Giles Yeo Chews the Fat, where he breaks down complex nutritional concepts with clarity and humor. Jay begins by asking the question on everyone’s mind—do calories really count? Giles, with a calm and science-grounded approach, unpacks why the answer isn’t so simple. While calorie counting has become a cornerstone of dieting, he explains that the way our bodies extract and process calories depends heavily on the quality of the food, not just the number printed on a label. Giles shares how our genetic makeup influences hunger, satiety, and fat storage in ways that most diet plans fail to consider. Jay and Giles explore the emotional and social layers of eating, diving into how cultural conditioning, access to healthy food, and even marketing affect our food choices. They also examine why it's harder for some people to lose weight than others—not because of laziness or lack of willpower, but because their biology is wired differently. Giles challenges the shame-based narratives around body weight and reframes the discussion around health, sustainability, and self-awareness. In this interview, you'll learn: How to Eat for Quality, Not Just Calories How to Read Food Labels the Right Way How to Choose Protein, Fiber, and Sugar Wisely How to Spot Diet Myths That Don’t Serve You How to Lose Weight Without Obsessing Over Numbers How to Understand Your Body’s Unique Metabolism How to Manage Cravings with a Plan, Not Willpower You don’t need to follow a strict diet or obsess over every calorie to feel better in your body. Instead, focus on nourishing yourself with real, quality foods, making small sustainable changes, and understanding how your unique biology works. A Description of episode 132 of Outside The Studio with Tessa: This month on Outside the Studio, we welcome David Benedicktus RN/BSN (retired). David has a 40-year career as a mental health professional working in a variety of mental health settings and focusing on system integration, and patient education projects. In retirement he became a founding member of Complementary Medicine Practitioners of PNW. He organized wellness health promotion talks for the City of Vancouver WA, the local library system and patient support groups. He also became an instructor at Clark College in Vancouver, Washington, for ten years lecturing on the neuroscience of trauma and the relationship between trauma and adaptive lifestyle choices which can lead to chronic disease and addictions. He teaches courses on the Neuroscience of Healing and Resiliency, Preventing Cognitive Decline as You Age, Cannabis and Your Health and Psychedelic Assisted Therapy. Leaning on David's life experience and subject matter expertise, today's conversation explores the theme of inequality and the divide between the haves and the have-nots. It begins with Tessa sharing her childhood realization of the difference between those who have safety and those who are in danger due to war, poverty, and mental health issues. Her father, David Benedicktus, discusses his involvement in the civil rights movement and his work with marginalized communities, particularly the homeless. They discuss the importance of empathy and taking action to address social issues. The conversation also touches on the impact of poverty, and the role of neuroscience in understanding human behavior. Key Takeaways:1.The divide between the haves and the have-nots is a significant issue that affects society. Empathy and understanding are crucial in addressing social issues and helping marginalized communities.2. Poverty and homelessness are complex problems that require structural support and resources. Neuroscience can help us understand the factors that contribute to human behavior and the need for compassion. Cultivating compassion and empathy is essential for addressing the challenges faced by marginalized communities.3. Trauma plays a significant role in shaping individuals and communities, and trauma-informed approaches are crucial for providing effective support. Providing resources such as mental health services and affordable housing can make a significant difference in the lives of those in need. Menopause is not easy but the good news is we have people like Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz on our side. Through her menopause bootcamps she is here to proclaim menopause is a time of celebration and her menopause bootcamps are a part of reclaiming that journey. In this episode we're talking with Dr. Suzanne about why she wants women to know their options, feel empowered, feel the love of community and create opportunities to move into that next part of their life with tools that make sense for them.  Her tools are evidence based and also based on good common sense.  When it comes to her Menopause Boot Camp and certification program, she has no less than world domination in mind. A Diplomat of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz, MD, received her medical degree in 1996 from the USC School of Medicine and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at UCLA/Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Get the Modern Gen X Woman Manifesto. Send Me the Manifesto! In this episode we're talking about…How menopause does bring a grief around fertility, regardless if we wanted more (or any) children or not The Gen X perspective of muscling through and why instead we need to ask for support The medicine is actually in the community, this is why we need to get together Why Agitation is hormonal for sure however, it's also a developmental phase where we are seeing ourselves and seeing our place on the planet differently and we are recognizing our own powerWhy menopause is a DEI issue and companies need to create an environment to support us so we can leverage our wisdom, we can be more productive, be able to speak about what we need with safety. We need to educate, support and create a solution and space for women to understand themselves How a doctor's empathy and humbleness can make all the difference in the way we're treated regardless if they're male or female “So my Menopause Boot Camp and certification program, I have no less than world domination in mind. I want people to feel what their options are, feel empowered, feel the love of community and create opportunities to move into that next part of their life with tools that make sense for them, that are evidence based, but are also based in common sense.”Mentioned in this episode: Follow Dr. Suzanne on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok @askdrsuzanne Menopause Bootcamp: Optimize Your Health, Empower Your Self, and Flourish as You Age (book) Menopause Bootcamp Book Club Guide Today is Your Someday with Tamsen FadalGet your free copy of our digital magazine, GEN neXt, The Voice of the Modern Gen X Woman. www.moderngenxwoman.com/gennext GEN NeXt is a collection of insights from incredible organizations, women, and industry experts who have dedicated themselves to the same cause—turning up the volume of women 40+. IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADE™… menopause—and the perimenopausal years leading up to it—takes the spotlight as a topic frequently requested by listeners. Great timing, as it's World Menopause Awareness Day as this episode launched on Oct. 18 and World Menopause Awareness Month in October.More than 1 million women in the United States experience menopause each year. Still, little is known, researched or taught in medical schools about the health effects of this natural biological occurrence. This is an episode for all the men listening, too! Also, younger women will get a lot of benefit out of the show and come away armed with information to help them navigate the many physical and mental changes of perimenopause leading up to menopause. Note, too, that some women go through menopause at ages earlier than 40 for various medical reasons and will want to keep listening.“I want people to stop being afraid to say menopause,” says Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz. “I think there's a lot to be said for just saying the word out loud. If we can deweaponize the term and just be talking about it like we would any other life phase, then we can be there for each other and we can also learn from each other.”Dr. Suzanne, an OBGYN board certified in integrative and holistic medicine, brings her expertise to the show to tackle this complex topic. Her “endless curiosity about the human experience” propelled her to uncover ways to ease women through pre and menopause stages with effective tools. She looks at the science and also brings in holistic elements, including Ayurveda. For more than two decades, she's led women through life transitions. Her new book “Menopause Bootcamp: Optimize Your Health, Empower Your Self and Flourish as You Age” offers practical steps and solutions that can help women navigate the many menopausal changes they may experience. Some of what you'll learn in this extensive conversation:Ways to de-pathologize menopause—which contributes to healing ageism. What's actually going on with your hormones during the transition to menopause and beyond. Why hormone testing isn't all that useful. Why Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT and what used to be called hormone replacement therapy, or HRT)—continues to be misunderstood and controversial. How to craft specific questions to better advocate for yourself with doctors. How to recognize symptoms that can range from moderate to severe to even debilitating. How to manage symptoms that disrupt the activities of daily living and long-term health. How physical changes can drive mental health issues during this time of your life. How to take control of your symptoms and find real solutions.Dr. Suzanne's “Menopause Bootcamp” touches on prejudice in medicine and how to break free from the societal bullshit surrounding menopause so you can get appropriate help and treatments.
