Kicking off the episode, Rob and the crew delve into the pressing question: "Is James Harden enough to get the Clippers to the Western Conference Finals?" Rob’s candid response shows skepticism, especially in light of key player Kawhi Leonard's uncertain status. This discussion highlights not just Robert's analytical prowess but also his penchant for direct conversations about team dynamics and playoff potential. And as we dive into March Madness, Rob dissects the intimidating reputation UConn holds among competitors, prompting discussions about current players like Juju Watkins at USC and the ongoing competitions that shape the basketball landscape.   The discussion takes an entertaining turn when Brian Scalabrini's recent showdown at New York's legendary West 4th Street Courts is brought into the spotlight. Known for his undying competitive spirit, Scalabrini, at 47, takes on a streetballer who claims New York supremacy and embarrasses the hell out of him. And as a newest member of the Grizzlies, Yuki Kawamura faces a unique challenge—language. Currently picking up English under the mentorship of Ja Morant, Kawamura amusingly and perhaps unfortunately, has learned only colorful phrases so far. This leads to a broader conversation on languages everyone wishes to learn, highlighting the entertaining linguistic misadventures and cultural exchanges that come with cross-border collaborations.   Capping off the episode is a nostalgic journey through sporting greatness. Robert and the guys reminisce about witnessing athletic legends live; from Serena Williams' grace on the tennis court to Michael Jordan dropping 50 points at a Bulls game. These reflections not only speak to the indescribable excitement that legendary performances invoke but also celebrate the remarkable careers that continue to inspire. The crew discusses players they wish they'd seen live—Dr. J, Gale Sayers, and more. These wishes illustrate a deep respect for the game’s evolution and history, emphasizing the impact sports heroes have beyond the court or field.   00:00 Introduction and Welcome 00:39 Fan Questions: James Harden and the Clippers 01:56 Discussion on UConn and Women's Basketball 05:49 Brian Scalabrini's Streetball Challenge 11:50 Yuki Kawamura and Learning English 13:18 The Easiest Class Ever 13:46 Struggles with Learning Dutch 14:41 Attempting to Learn Spanish 16:04 Interest in Sign Language 16:27 Funny Sign Language Story 18:09 Clemson's Locker Room Mishap 19:03 Elevator Incident at LSU 20:02 Bill Belichick's Yoga Adventure 24:28 Best Athletes Seen Live

This episode begins with an introspective message from Suge regarding the pros and cons of growing up in the inner city as a young black man. Leading with the question “what if?” Suge addresses the difference in outcome depending on what environment an individual is raised in. And ultimately how one's environment dictates life experiences. 4:22 Continuing with examples of how jealousy or lack of information often leads to division within our culture, Suge points out that “if” Eazy E would have listened to his advice, the landscape of hip hop would look a lot different. 04:51 Referring to the crack epidemic of the ‘80s leading into the ‘90s, Suge points out the devastation witnessed within the Black community as families were ultimately divided and destroyed once leadership was erased. 06:15 Pointing out how and why money & influence plays a pivotal role in success for one's self and those around us; Suge points out how his resources allowed many people around him to avoid the pitfalls of the streets and prison by having access to lawyers and strong legal representation. Which has often times been a key reason for individuals going to or remaining in the prison system. 07:01 The episode takes a journey into the notion of time, how valuable it is, and ultimately how it is the one thing no one is in control of. Pointing out that the one thing an individual can never get back is and always will be “time.” Suge is clear on its value and importance. 11:58 Class is fully in session as Suge points out the importance of knowing, embracing, and respecting the history of individuals who laid the foundation for sports and entertainment in the Black community. Making reference to icons like Jackie Robinson, Gale Sayers, OJ Simpson and Jim Brown, the doors were open for athletes like Michael Jordan and Lebron James to have an enormous impact with their brands and endorsements. 13:25 Continuing with facts and key points of how perception determines outcomes, Suge points out similarities between his situation and the situation OJ Simpson experienced. Making it clear that people often judge others before judging themselves and how the effects can be detrimental to one's freedom and overall life. 21:15 Suge explains his love and respect for Snoop and how he always wanted to see Snoop be successful during his time at Death Row. Asking the question, “How could he do something like that to Pac. And how could he do something like that to me”? referring to a situation involving Michael Harris allegedly speaking with the FBI. 25:55 Suge makes reference to Snoop's role in acquiring Death Row amd working with Michael Harris in an attempt to erase Suge's connection and ties with the label he ultimately built from the ground up. Asking the question, “Am I supposed to sit back and accept it? Or do I set the record straight and try to help all?” 27:45 Suge tells the story of how OJ Simpson was given 9 years in prison for attempting to retrieve his property and how it's so similar to the situation with Suge having physical and intellectual property stolen from him. 30:18 Suge explains the artists and individuals on the label who were given Death Row chains and makes it clear who was representing the label. He also makes it clear that anything outside of being done directly by him is false. This episode is sponsored by Earnin. Download Earnin today in the Google Play or Apple app store. Dick Butkus talks with Doc about his thoughts on the Kansas Comet Gale Sayers.

WLIE 540 AM SPORTSTALKNY

Dick Butkus possessed a desire to excel that few have equaled. He played as the Chicago Bears' middle linebacker for nine years with only one goal in mind – to be the best, and from the very start, he was just that. In his rookie season, Butkus, a first-round draft choice, had only one challenger for National Football League Rookie of the Year honors, teammate Gale Sayers. That same year Butkus was named first-team All-NFL, an honor he would record five more times. Butkus also played in the Pro Bowl following his rookie season and in each of the next seven years. He even figured in the career statistical columns with 22 interceptions and 27 opponents' fumble recoveries. Dick had drive, meanness, a consuming desire to pursue, tackle and manhandle – anything he could do to thwart the enemy on every play. Still, he was a clean player, totally devoted to his career, a man who by his own admission played every game as though it were his last one. Butkus had the speed and agility to make tackles from sideline to sideline and to cover the best tight ends and running backs on pass plays. He had instinct, strength, leadership and, maybe most important of all, anger. “When I went out on the field to warm up, I would manufacture things to make me mad,” he once said. “If someone on the other team was laughing, I'd pretend he was laughing at me or the Bears. It always worked for me." It was inevitable that injuries would eventually come to someone who threw himself so completely into a contact sport such as football. For Butkus, it was a serious right knee injury in 1970 that didn't respond completely to surgery. Three years later, he retired. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979, his first year of eligibility. Dick Butkus passed away 10/5/23. This interview took place on 11/25/12.

He then wonders if they have a better chance of competing for the AL Pennant now that the New York Yankees are unlikely to make the postseason. John asks out loud why the Twins run and hide whenever they play the Yankees in the postseason? The fear they have for the Yankees is unbelievable. John next asks what New York Giants Head Football Coach Brian Daboll said to his team during halftime before their comeback victory over the Arizona Cardinals. He then rips the San Francisco 49ers defensive players who ANONYMOUSLY criticized Giants quarterback Daniel Jones without having the balls to put their name and image with it. John then goes on a rant about how one could be a professional football and be so weak as to lack the self-confidence to put your name behind a comment like that. During today's #savingsportshistory segment, John talks about the first ever organized baseball team, Gene Tunney, Rocky Marciano, Jose Canseco, Albert Pujols, and Gale Sayers speaking about the latter in regards to his place among all time NFL running backs.

My motto: Any time spent with Vahe Gregorian is time well spent. You'll enjoy this hour with the sports columnist for The Kansas City Star as he shares highlights from his 35-year career. He puts us courtside in historic Allen Fieldhouse for the rivalry between Kansas and Missouri. He takes us to the Dominican Republic for the funeral of Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura. Go with Vahe to the home of Chicago Bears Hall of Fame running back Gale Sayers, who was battling dementia before his death. Head to Australia where Vahe went behind the scenes of an agonizing Olympic loss. Spend time with Tom Watson and George Brett, icons of Kansas City. Hear how that city was galvanized in the past decade by the Royals and Chiefs winning championships. And we give a special nod to Vahe's late father, Vartan Gregorian.   Vahe Gregorian will be one of five journalists enshrined in the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame this weekend at the Final Four in New Orleans. In 2017-18, he was president of the USBWA, which described him as “the ultimate teammate among his colleagues and a role model among his peers.” Gregorian has been sports columnist for The Kansas City Star since 2013 after spending 25 years covering a variety of sports for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has covered 10 Olympics, three World Series, a Super Bowl, 22 Final Fours and multiple college football bowl games since the late 1980s.   In 2017, the Associated Press Sports Editors named Vahe the national winner for column writing for large market newspapers. He earned another top 10 columnist award from the APSE in 2016, and his work was also recognized as part of a reporting team that was named one of the top 10 projects for that year. He was a Pulitzer Prize nominee in 2000, won several Football Writers Association of America awards, and has been named Missouri Sports Writer of the Year multiple times. His work has been published in “The Best American Sports Writing.” He has published two books: one about former Northwestern football coach Gary Barnett, and the other about former Michigan State football coach George Perles.   Gregorian was born in Beirut, Lebanon and raised in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. He played varsity football at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1983 with a degree in English. He earned his master's degree in journalism at Missouri in ‘88. In 2004, he was chosen as a Knight-Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan, where he focused on history and the demise of sportsmanship.   Follow Vahe Gregorian on Twitter: @vgregorian Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 40 of The Far Middle is dedicated to Gale Sayers, the “Kansas Comet.” Nick recalls the legendary rusher’s famous quote, "Give me 18 inches of daylight. That's all I need.” And he compares that to the use-to-be work ethic of the American worker, “just give me a job, that’s all I need.” Nick examines America’s declining workforce participation and how that will have far-ranging economic impacts. Nick goes on to discuss: his attempt at tackling James Joyce’s Ulysses; Winston Churchill’s sage observations on the elite class (and the relationship to the themes discussed in Precipice); and, the elite class’ suppression of the Great Barrington Declaration. Nick concludes with an insight on how the NFL playoffs apparently cured the league’s Covid cases and closes with a few Super Bowl reflections.

The 1965 Draft was the most fiercely fought event between the rival National and American Football Leagues. It was a fierce battle for such future Hall of Fame greats Joe Namath, Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers. The two arch-enemies competed for the top college talent by breaking gentlemen agreements, testing limits of NCAA boundaries, and even sabotaging each other with “dirty tricks” and deceptions that mirrored the real-world Cold War and the spy movies and TV shows of the era. Features interviews with Joe Namath, Dick Butkus, Gale Sayers, Craig Morton, Fred Biletnikoff, Ron Wolf and more.
