In 2011, following the Taliban siege on Kabul's Intercontinental Hotel, an SAS soldier identified only as Serviceman J was awarded New Zealand's second highest military honour by showing outstanding gallantry in the face of danger. After eighteen years in the New Zealand SAS, ex-commander Jamie Pennell is now ready to tell his story - his new book Serviceman J The untold story of an NZSAS soldier is out nowSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A highly-decorated former NZSAS commander has opened up about the Kiwi unit's military operations in a new memoir. Serviceman J details Jamie Pennell's recruitment story and training journey - and lifts the lid on the NZSAS's Afghanistan operations, including the deadly Kabul hotel siege. Pennell says the selection process to join the unit was a difficult one - mentally, physically and spiritually. "It's very brutal - and that's by design. Operations are quite difficult, so we have to replicate that in our selection process." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Act of Disappearing by Nathan Gower. Julia White is struggling - her mother died recently, she's had a one night stand with an ex and now he's ghosted her, her first published book is a failure and she's working in a Brooklyn café. One day, an older guy comes in and shows her a photo taken in the 1960s of a woman falling off a bridge, clutching her baby. Turns out he's a very famous photographer who actually took that picture behind which he says there's a mystery and a story which he wants Julia to go to Kentucky and research, then write a book about it. She's persuaded to do it, and what she uncovers is something shocking, and deeply personal. This is a richly layered story which reveals itself in the most satisfying of ways. Serviceman J by Jamie Pennell. The author joined the New Zealand SAS and describes the recruitment process and training regime, which is pretty extraordinary (as you'd imagine – but reading about it was exhausting!) – and then was deployed to Afghanistan several times, serving in the SAS for 18 years. He was a friend and colleague of Willie Apiata, and was himself awarded New Zealand's second highest military honour by showing outstanding gallantry in the face of danger. The book is an eye opening look at what these men put themselves through to be able to serve at this level, and what it's really like in combat. The Great Gildersleeve-1941-1-16- 012 Serviceman For Thanksgiving
Gildersleeve invites a few servicemen to his house for Thanksgiving, but... Things begin to become more disrupting than he thought it would be. Harold Perry is Gildersleeve... Willard Waterman took over the role when Perry wanted a bigger salary from NBC. They fired him and replaced him with a man who looked very much like him and sounded like him as well. In fact the switch was so perfect, it took some time before the listening audience even realized it had happened!
A very emotional veteran calls Dan to respond to an earlier mother who vehemently opposed her children serving in an overseas war, then details a family friend and her daughter who are currently being held hostage by Hamas in Gaza. When should young Americans be compelled to service in the armed forces for the United States at war? Will the draft be reinstated? Should it?
