Weekly shoutout: New music at Washingtones Records! -- Hi there, Today I am delighted to be arts calling award-winning writer Georgia Jeffries! georgiajeffries.com ABOUT OUR GUEST: Georgia Jeffries is a writer of Emmy Award winning drama and critically acclaimed noir fiction. Honored with multiple Writers Guild Awards, Golden Globes and the Humanitas Prize, her work in film has been praised by the Los Angeles Times as “standing ovation television.” The Los Angeles Review of Books described her short stories in the national anthologies, Odd Partners and The Last Resort, as “firecracker tales” and “domestic tragedy brilliantly segueing into comic farce.” She has also written biographical profiles for HuffPost and UC Press, including “The Last Gun of Tibercio Vasquez,” which can be viewed on the KCET-TV website, Artbound. Born in the Illinois heartland, she worked as a journalist for American Film before writing and producing ground-breaking female-driven dramas, Cagney & Lacey, China Beach and Sisters. Her screenwriting career has been distinguished by extensive field research, from patrolling the mean streets of Rampart with the LAPD to crashing a Vegas bounty hunters' convention to reporting from a Walter Reed Army Hospital surgical bay, each investigation the basis for one of her many docudramas and series pilots for CBS, ABC, NBC, HBO and Showtime. A cum laude UCLA graduate, Jeffries is a professor at USC's School of Cinematic Arts where she created the first undergraduate screenwriting thesis program at an American university. THE YOUNGER GIRL, available from Mission Point Press on October 22nd! ABOUT THE YOUNGER GIRL: Based on a true crime, The Younger Girl, (Mission Point Press, October 22, 2024) a debut novel by trailblazing, award-winning writer Georgia Jeffries, combines fiction and supernatural suspense to unravel a thrilling tale of family betrayal and redemption. On March 2, 1933, Chicago tabloids trumpeted the death of 20-year-old "town belle" Aldine Younger: "HEIRESS SLAIN, MARRIED MAN HELD." The son of the mayor of Pontiac, a rich farming community south of Chicago, was convicted of manslaughter. But the dead girl's baby brother, Owen, grew up in a broken family and suspected his beloved sister's killing was orchestrated by their wealthy uncle. In 1996 Owen is an old man desperate to make peace with the tragedy of Aldine's death. His daughter, Joanna, takes her still grieving father back home to claim his share of his sister's lost inheritance. Together, they are caught in a dark labyrinth of family betrayal crossing three generations. Owen is found raving during a violent thunderstorm and now believes his daughter is his sister, Aldine, returning to him. Joanna races against time to save her father and unearths damning secrets that threaten her own life. The guilty will be exposed at the psychic bridge linking past, present and future. But at what cost? And who will survive the revelations? “True-crime stories are difficult, and far more so, when the true crime is in your own family. Georgia Jeffries's triumphant novel tells the story of her aunt Aldine Younger's killing in 1933—a violent death that has cast a long and complex shadow over the family, the community, and far beyond. Viewing these events through the lens of fiction, Jeffries deploys clear-eyed research and lucid, evocative prose to craft a novel that will haunt long after the book is closed.” —Howard Rodman, novelist/screenwriter Professor, USC School of Cinematic Arts Vice President, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Thanks for this wonderful conversation, Georgia! All the best! -- Arts Calling is produced by Jaime Alejandro at the coalition. HOW TO SUPPORT ARTS CALLING: PLEASE CONSIDER LEAVING A REVIEW, OR SHARING THIS EPISODE WITH A FRIEND! Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

Happy Birthday to us!! Team Player Podcast turns one year old this week - that's right we have been bringing you a weekly story of a coach making a difference for the past 52 straight weeks! So let's celebrate this milestone with a guy that really helped Coach Kovo cut his teeth as a Head Coach when he was Kovo's Offensive Coordinator at Aldine High School. He is now the Assistant Head Football Coach at Fort Bend Hightower HS, welcome Nate Shallenberger to the show! - We have a certified "inside the looper" as Coach Shall was born and raised in the heart of Houston's beautiful West University! - From there Coach went on to attend HISD's Lamar High School where he relished in being a part of a diverse student body and had the distinct honor and pleasure of playing for the legendary Tom Nolen!! - For the 2nd week in a row we welcome an Aggie into the Team Player Studios, and once again we have someone who found the Spirit of Aggieland a little later than some others. - Kovo and Shall reflect on some good times at Aldine including the time Coach Kovo thought he was going to get fired at halftime, and the time they took a 1-6 Aldine Mustangs team into a rainy Saturday afternoon at Thorne Stadium and pulled off an upset for the ages against the playoff-bound Nimitz Cougars! After that trip down memory lane we dive into Coach Shall's other stops including the Hightower Hurricanes catching lightning in a bottle this year with a very impressive return to 6A football, and a rejuvenated rivalry with the Ridge Point Panthers for the Fort Bend Tollway Cup. - Finally being a native Houstonian we had to get Shall's definitive Astros Mount Rushmore! We're making Team Player Podcast history for a 4th week in a row as we welcome our 1st ever coach who works with our middle school athletes into the Team Player Studios! He has worked at all 3 levels - elementary, middle, and high school, and his list of accomplishments was so long that Coach Kovo had to take a water break to read them all! He is the Athletic Coordinator of the record-breaking, uber-successful Jones Toro athletic program and an old friend, welcome Laurentis Butler-Thomas to the show! - Growing up in Rushwood, TX in the Greater Greenspoint/Spring area right at the confluence of 3 school districts, where he could have just as easily went to Eisenhower (Aldine ISD) or Klein Forest (Klein ISD) as he did Westfield (Spring ISD) - It was Westfield where he ended up at and Coach is a true student of Westfield history, and names off a laundry list of Mustang greats, including some legendary coaches he played for such as Emory Bellard who is credited as the Father of the Wishbone Offense! - Laurentis is the true example of someone who was doing amazing things for years in relative obscurity because he wasn't racking up championships early on in his career. But he kept working hard and loving kids, and once he got his big opportunity, boy did he ever take advantage of it! Great reminder to all of us coaches that our value is defined by more than just wins and losses! - For the 2nd week in a row do not call this man a Texans fan! Much like Jerry Hurtado the week before, Laurentis bled Powder Blue, but instead of taking his fandom to Tennessee like Jerry, Coach Butler reps Them Boyz!! We do another fun Oilers Mount Rushmore with a slightly newer generation than last week, and for any Westfield and Aldine alums, you are in for a real treat as we do a special edition of Westfield HS and Aldine ISD Mt. In this episode, Doni and Dr. Rhonda chat with Emilio Sasamu Thomas about Garifuna history and culture. A professional musician and educator, Sasamu is the youngest member of the Garifuna Collective, a band based in Belize. He plays the guitar, piano and a variety of percussion instruments. Sasamu talks about how the Garifuna people are a mixture of indigenous and African, and about the various tales of how Africans arrived on the shores of the Western Hemisphere. He also talks about his efforts to preserve the Garifuna culture, particularly the importance of preserving the Garifuna language, which even though it may be spoken among small groups around Central America, it's still "alive." "The Garifuna language is alive, even if it's just five people who speak it, the mere fact remains that it is alive," he says. "And so our responsibility now is to teach the other generation to continue the language. It is very important that we recognize that we have a responsibility, and saying that it's dying instead of doing something about it means that we intend to let it die." Watch the video version of this episode on XOTV!---------------There's the story of who we are as individuals, what we know and walk with, and the story other people create in their minds about who you are.
