We have been getting a lot of questions about tariffs so we thought we would dedicate an episode to the topic of tariffs, manufacturing in Canada and a few personal thoughts on Canada/USA relations. For some added insight, we have invited our friend Dustin Rhodes (owner of Lucky Strike Bait Works) to be part of the discussion. This episode is a bit different than our usual content and format, but we hope you find the conversation interesting. He says they're seeing “phenomenal” results, with more visitors and better customer satisfaction. He talks about their entertainment portfolio, which includes bowling lanes and water parks. Lev emphasizes the “elevated entertainment experience” as the most important lens to view the company through, along with the “value proposition” as consumers pull back from discretionary.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – / schwabnetwork Follow us on Facebook – / schwabnetwork Follow us on LinkedIn - / schwab-network About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about
(00:00) Zolak and Bertrand begin hour 2 taking calls on the Joe Milton trade. McKone says players need to understand their roles. Zolak defends Milton, stating he’s not a bad attitude guy and highlights fragile egos in the league. He also recalls how bad the QB room was when it was Bailey Zappe and Mac Jones. (12:37) The guys discuss Josh McDaniels saying he's "smitten" with Drake Maye. Zolak suggests McDaniels must be excited to work with him. Beetle says if the offense struggles, McDaniels should take all the blame and asks if the Patriots will have a top 10 offense this season. (26:13) Zolak and Bertrand thank the fans who made the trip to Lucky Strike to see them and take more calls on the Joe Milton trade. Beetle points out that the NFL's lack of interest in Milton after he was a 6th-round pick should have been a sign no one wanted him. Zolak adds that neither Drake Maye nor Milton would be able to help each other. (36:45) The guys discuss the Bruins' 10-game losing streak and their current position with the 4th best odds for the #1 pick in the draft. Beetle says they need to ensure they keep losing to maintain their draft position. McKone adds that the Bruins make losing look easy. T-Bone gives his win/loss predictions for the Bruins' upcoming games.

We really enjoyed talking with Mary Bragg about her new EP “The Quiet One” OUT TOMORROW (1/23/25). We got really deep chatting about the importance of listening, getting lost in theactivity of writing, accepting your inner critic rather than fighting it, and so much more including her recent wedding! An artist, songwriter, producer, and engineer, the Swainsboro, Georgia native began to fully come into her own with her 2017 record, the critically acclaimed Lucky Strike. Hailedas a “sublime distilling of Southern grit” by NPR, the album dipped its toes into a kind of radical honesty that Bragg had only previously hinted at, which she then committed further to for her self-titled album, Mary Bragg, released in 2022. Covering heartbreak, divorce, coming out, grief, and self-actualization, Mary Bragg depicts themes centered around the life tenets most important to her – love, kindness, and honesty. Bragg tours extensively, both with her band and solo, playing headline and festival dates to ever-growing audiences across the US, Canada, and Europe. Since earning her Master of Artsin Songwriting and Production at BerkleeNYC, Bragg just released a lush new EP, Tie Me to You, and hints at a forthcoming full-length record. Having opened tours for the Indigo Girls, The Secret Sisters, Mick Flannery, and even Miranda Lambert, Bragg is gearing up for a robust chapter, because, as Saving Country Music said, “Watch out.” Check Mary out here— Website: marybragg.com Instagram: marybragg Facebook: Mary Lowman-Bragg YouTube: Mary Bragg music

We're not known for blowing smoke on Mad Men Men, but I guess we can make an exception for this penultimate episode of the season! That's right, we're back to discuss Season 4, Episode 12, titled "Blowing Smoke." Which finds the old gang at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce scrambling in the fog of losing Lucky Strike. As usual, we recap the episode, give our analysis, and reference the director/writer/actors' commentaries as well as Mad Men Carousel by Matt Zoller Seitz. In case this is your first time digging into our podcast, we recap Mad Men from the perspective of a first-time watcher, someone who only watched the show once while it was airing, and a superfan who watches excessively instead of having a functional social life. “Blowing Smoke” Discussion Points: What can we make of the dynamic between Sally and Glen in this episode? How can we connect Don's American Cancer pitch to the "kids" in "Blowing Smoke"? Does this really feel like a penultimate episode? Is the Midge subplot all that believable? What is the current state of Don and Faye's relationship? Extra credits: Matthew Weiner created Mad Men, which aired on AMC from 2007 to 2015. John Slattery directed “Blowing Smoke” and Andre Jacquemetton and Maria Jacquemetton wrote the script. The show stars Jon Hamm, January Jones, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, Christina Hendricks, John Slattery, Robert Morse, and many more. Our intro music is “Mad Men Men” by Tom Davidson, which is an original remix of the show's opening theme “A Beautiful Mine” by RJD2. Podcast illustration is by Jon Negroni. PROJECT AUDION EPISODE 56 - The Jack Benny Program w/guest star James Stewart (orig. rel. 6/14/24) Project Audion once again brings you laughs, with an all-new original episode of the Jack Benny Program sponsored by Lucky Strike cigarettes. This Audion Original was written for us by former Bob Hope staff writer Robert L. Mills. In the fall of 1944 after Jack's switch to Lucky Strike, General Foods did move a show opposite Jack. It wound up being The Kate Smith Show. The company uprooted Smith's Friday program, countering Benny with a One-Hundred-Seventy-Thousand-Dollar ad campaign. While they did temporarily put a dent into Benny's rating, Kate Smith lost forty-percent of her audience, dropping to ninety-third place in the overall ratings. The following season General Foods moved her back to Friday, but Kate Smith never again had another Top-fifty show. Well, that brings our look at Jack Benny's show in the spring of 1944 to a close. I mentioned that Benny's last episode for General Foods aired on June 4th, 1944. Our next episode of Breaking Walls will move only two days into the future, for perhaps the most important day in broadcasting history. Next time on Breaking Walls, we spotlight radio broadcasting on June 6th, 1944 to align ourselves with the Country's heartbeat on the day the invasion of western Europe finally began. The reading material used in today's episode was: • Sunday Nights at Seven — by Jack and Joan Benny • On The Air — By John Dunning • Network Radio Ratings — By Jim Ramsburg As well as articles from • Broadcasting Magazine • Radio Daily • Variety And a massive special thank you to William Cairns for providing me with invaluable research on Benny's 1940s run. William has a Jack Benny book on its way. On the interview front: • Jack Benny, Dennis Day, Phil Harris, Frank Nelson, and Don Wilson spoke with Chuck Schaden. Hear these full chats at Speakingofradio.com. • Mel Blanc and Mary Jane Higby spoke to Dick Bertel and Ed Corcoran for WTIC's The Golden Age of Radio. Hear these interviews at Goldenage-WTIC.org • Jack Benny, Dennis Day, Phil Harris, and Don Wilson were with Jack Carney • Dennis Day was also with John Dunning for his 1980s 71KNUS Radio program from Denver. • Orson Welles spoke to Johnny Carson Selected music featured in today's episode was: • The Hut on Fowl's Legs — By Modest Mussorgsky
June 4th, 1944 was the last Grape Nuts Flakes sponsored Jack Benny Program. Jack took out a full page ad in Variety thanking General Foods and their agency Young and Rubicam for ten years of partnership. Six days later, the American Cigarette and Cigar Company deposited two hundred thousand dollars in a special exploitation account for the program. On June 23rd they wrote to Jack stipulating some terms of the agreement. The program would be broadcast live coast-to-coast 7:00PM eastern war time, with a transcribed rebroadcast by transcription between 12:30 and 1:00AM New York time for West Coast stations. In August, Benny left on a three-week USO tour of Australia and the South Pacific. On August 28th, American Tobacco announced that Pall Mall's product scarcity didn't justify a twenty-five thousand dollar per week expenditure. Lucky Strike would sponsor the show. The following week they announced a comprehensive, multimedia ad campaign. It was estimated to cost over a quarter million dollars. This changed the company with which Jack was signed from the American Cigarette & Cigar Company to the American Tobacco Company, and was made official on September 26th, 1944.

Originally Recorded on Saturday April 13th and Saturday April 20th, 2024 Hello there, fans! That Horror Show Podcast brings you a brand new episode for the beginning of the May season...but, just to be clear, this episode is not May-related. Anyways, those lovable dummies Timothy Kazda and Chris Koenig tackle another double-feature of fear and fright. And, wouldn't you know it, the two films take place during World War 2! Pop quiz, class: did you know the Allies were fighting against zombie supermen and Romanian blood-suckers on the side? If you didn't know that piece of ancient history, then you are in for a treat with this episode. Tune in to hear the hosts talk about "Overlord" (2018), a wild tale involving American G.I.'s battling against evil Nazi's (really, are there any other kind?) and the Third Reich's secret experimentation in the creation of superhuman soldiers from beyond the grave! And then, the hosts turn their sights towards the rather witty title "Blood Vessel" (2019) in which those wild and crazy Nazi's have unleashed an ancient Romanian blood-drinking creature on a ship that threatens some Allied survivors! Oh, and Nate of 'Kids Corner' just got his draft papers and he's about to tackle "Tucker & Dale vs. Evil" (2010). So grab your rifle and bayonet, make sure you have plenty of Lucky Strike's to smoke-up, and give this episode a listen, soldier! #Overlord #BloodVessel #TuckerandDaleVsEvil #DeathShip #WWII #Zombies #Vampires #THSP

At 7PM eastern time over Mutual Broadcasting's flagship WOR, The Mysterious Traveler went on the air. Written and directed by Robert Arthur and David Kogan, The Mysterious Traveler debuted on Mutual December 5th, 1943. Maurice Tarplin played the title role with a good-natured malevolence. The traveler mostly narrated from an omniscient perch. He rode a phantom train by night. The opening signature was the distant wail of a locomotive whistle, fading in gradually until the rumble of the train could be heard. David Kogan and Robert Arthur had met in Greenwich Village, New York, partnering on Mutual's Dark Destiny. After it was canceled, they came up with the Mysterious Traveler concept and prepared three sample scripts. Norman Livingston bought it for WOR. As independent producers, they were paid a flat rate for the whole package. Any money they saved by using the same actor in multiple roles went into their own pockets, so they used the best character actors in New York. Kogan also directed the series. On Easter Sunday, episode 19, “Beware of Tomorrow,” aired just as a gloomy dusk descended upon New York. Opposite The Mysterious Traveler, The Jack Benny Program signed on live, coast-to-coast at 7PM from WEAF in New York and at 4PM from KFI in Los Angeles. By April of 1944, Benny's writing team consisted of Sam Perrin, Milt Josefsberg, John Tackaberry, and this man, George Balzer. By the spring of 1944, General Foods had been sponsoring the program for ten years, first with Jell-O and then Grape Nuts Flakes. Benny's ratings had quietly been slipping since 1941. At the end of this season, his contract with General Foods was up. There was tension between the two parties because Benny had helped save Jell-O from going out of business. Benny had full control of his show. NBC also guaranteed his Sunday time slot for as long as he wanted it. This position allowed Benny to sell his program to the highest bidder. George W. Hill, the President of American Tobacco, wanted Benny's show. His chief account executive was thirty-six-year-old Pat Weaver, the future president of NBC. Benny's management team quietly held a sealed auction for sponsorship on February 24th. A surprise winner was announced: Ruthrauff & Ryan, agency for American Tobacco's Pall Mall cigarettes, bid twenty-five thousand dollars per-week for three thirty-five week seasons. The weekly money was payable to Benny for all payroll and production costs. They also included an additional two-hundred-thousand dollars over the three years for marketing and promotion. American Tobacco also agreed to pay for any network and carrier line charges. The advertising community was stunned. The Easter Sunday program was Pall Mall's audition. In the end, this would be the only Jack Benny episode to have a Pall Mall commercial. Pat Weaver and George W. Hill knew no one would take Ruthrauff & Ryan's bid for Pall Mall seriously. Had Foote, Cone & Belding, American Tobacco's agency for its top cigarette, Lucky Strike, entered the fray, the attention would have driven up the price. The last Benny show sponsored by General Foods was June 4th, 1944. Benny took out a full page ad in Variety thanking General Foods for ten years of sponsorship. In August, he left on a three-week USO tour of Australia and the South Pacific. On August 28th, American Tobacco announced that Pall Mall's sales didn't justify a twenty-five thousand dollar per week expenditure. Lucky Strike would sponsor the show. The following week they announced a comprehensive, multimedia ad campaign. It was estimated to cost over a quarter million dollars. Lucky Strike would sponsor The Jack Benny Program beginning October 1st, 1944.

At 41 years of age, Jarad “Dingo” Boshammer, has been fishing the world for a very long time. He's renowned now for having an acute sense for catching monster snook and tarpon guiding out of his 18 foot Chittum Skiff in Jupiter, Florida. But Florida is a long way from his roots. He was born into a heavy sport fishing family in Queensland, Australia. His Dad, Sid, was a live-aboard Charter Captain, so naturally his son was catching fish at a very, very young age. He loved it! At one time Jarad and his friends had bikes with trailers on them with a number of rods, a live well, and tackle boxes. They'd fish along the shore or catch the ferry to Frasier Island. School was secondary as he knew he was going to be a fisherman. At one point, Dean Butler showed him a photo of a shark ravaged marlin that would impact him greatly. The pectoral fins of this half eaten giant were on the deck and the bill was as tall as Butler. “When I saw that picture, I knew right then and there what I wanted to do with my life - chase dinosaurs!” Soon he was on the high seas. At seventeen he was the #1 deckhand on the boat “Lucky Strike” with Captain John Batterton who would give him the nickname, “Dingo” that would stick. Over a 20 year span he worked with some of the most famous captains in the game including two IGFA Hall of Fame members, Captain Dean Butler and Captain Laurie Wright. He also learned from the great lure magician in Hawaii, Captain Chip Van Mols. Dingo crewed 15 seasons on the Great Barrier Reef, fished in 20 countries and helped catch 150 fish over 700 pounds and 25 over 1,000 pounds! Here is Dingo's incredible life story...

Robert Page, a professor in the Departments of Clinical Pharmacy and Physical Medicine at the University of Colorado, joins Tim to talk about some new developments in determining significant cardiovascular risks associated with marijuana use, regardless of the reason. He's the lead author on a new paper from the American Heart Association that exposes major risks. We talk about his paper, some of the myths surrounding medical marijuana usage, and what it all means. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/Robert_Page_-_Weed_and_Heart_Health_auphonic.mp3 If I were to use a term with you, a propaganda term, do you think you'd fall for it? Let's give it a shot. So, here's the term. What do you think of when I say, “medical marijuana?” Now, before we go any further, I need to give you a quick history lesson on the field where I work. I work in public relations. The founding fathers of this field actually called it the practice of propaganda back in those early days. And they weren't wrong. Some 100 years ago, propagandists sold everything from war bonds to cigarettes, from oil and gasoline to railroad travel. And when something went wrong, they became spin doctors. They played with the truth, and it wasn't always ethical. Since then, the field has done much to improve its own image by establishing ethical standards, but this doesn't mean that “spin” has just faded away. The battle over the truth is never-ending. If you can believe this, back in the 1930s and 40s, the advertising and public relations fields convinced Americans that smoking cigarettes was actually good for their health. At that time, the medical community had not yet discovered the link between smoking and lung cancer or lung disease. In fact, most doctors smoked cigarettes. Of course, there was evidence all around them that lung cancer was on the rise, but no one blamed cigarettes at first. Some tobacco companies even used doctors in their ads. American Tobacco was the maker of Lucky Strike cigarettes. In 1930, the company created an ad that said, “20,679 Physicians say ‘LUCKIES are less irritating'” to the throat of a smoker. To arrive at this conclusion, American Tobacco's advertising agency sent cartons of Lucky Strike cigarettes to doctors along with a letter. That letter asked those doctors whether they believed Lucky Strike cigarettes were “less irritating to sensitive and tender throats than other cigarettes.” To make sure they got the results they wanted, the letter that “a good many people” had already said Lucky Strikes were less irritating. In the end, millions of Americans came to believe that cigarettes have a medicinal effect. By 1937, the Philip Morris weighed in with an ad in the Saturday Evening Post. Keep in mind, that magazine was extremely dominant and powerful in influencing public opinion throughout the United States at the time. The Philip Morris ad said the company did a study that showed “when smokers changed to Philip Morris, every case of irritation cleared completely and definitely improved.” The ad never mentioned the business relationship the company had with those doctors. For years, tobacco companies made claims in their advertising and marketing that smoking cigarettes are healthy, and if not good for you, the ads certainly never hinted that cigarettes could be bad for you. The R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company even created a Medical Relations Division and promoted it through medical journals. That company paid for its own research to demonstrate the medicinal benefits of cigarette smoking. In 1946, R.J. Reynolds created a new ad campaign under the slogan, “More doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarette.” We talk to someone who knows a lot more than I do on this. You can learn a lot by looking at the past. Especially at an era that shaped how we think of marketing today. Today, we're traveling back in time. And we're doing it in style.Come with us to Madison Avenue in the 1960s, a formative time for advertising and marketing. It was the “Mad Men” that walked so the 21st Century marketers could run. And even though we're equipped with technology, AI and all sorts of new digital tools, many of the cares and struggles feel familiar. But we're not just turning to the past today to commiserate. We're looking at case studies and learning from the classic masters of marketing…through the lens of Hollywood, of course. In this episode, we're turning to the series that brought marketing into pop culture and earned Lionsgate $26 million a year: Mad Men. Joining us is VP & Head of Marketing at G2, Palmer Houchins. Palmer and the Remarkable team are discussing how to balance delivering on your brand promise with connecting emotionally with your audience, being persistent with marketing ideas, and paying attention to all the little details. So put on your sharkskin suit and wingtip oxfords for this episode of Remarkable.About our guest, Palmer HouchinsPalmer Houchins is the VP, Head of Marketing at G2. He previously served as a senior marketing leader and G2 customer at Mailchimp (acquired by Intuit) and CallRail ($125M+ in funding). He is a veteran marketer with 15+ years of experience growing businesses, scaling teams and building brands.About G2G2 is the largest and most trusted software marketplace, helping 80 million people every year make smarter software decisions based on authentic peer reviews.About Mad MenMad Men is a drama series about a prestigious New York ad agency called Sterling Cooper in the 1960s focusing on debauched ad executive Don Draper, who's played by Jon Hamm. It also stars Elisabeth Moss, Christina Hendricks, January Jones, John Slattery and Vincent Kartheizer. The series was created by Matthew Weiner and produced by Lionsgate Television. It aired from 2007 to 2015. According to the pilot episode, the name “Mad Men” is short for Madison Men, or the men that worked on Madison Avenue in New York City. It won 16 Emmys, five Golden Globes, a Peabody award, averaged 2 million viewers over its run, and made Lionsgate about $26 million a year. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Mad Men:Be persistent. If you have a cool idea for a marketing campaign, don't let it drop. It's only a matter of time before that idea becomes your next success. Writer Matthew Weiner wrote the script for Mad Men in 2001, but it didn't get picked up until four years later. Palmer says, “Matthew Weiner was writing this script on his off time at The Sopranos where he was a writer and just had it in his back pocket. And he just kept trying to get it made, get it made, no one was interested. And then boom, this happens and it becomes one of the most successful shows of all time.” So hold onto those good ideas and advocate for them. If you believe they're good ideas and worthy of being created, act with conviction.Pay attention to the details. Make sure every part of your design and marketing aligns with your brand. The logos, font, pictures, the messaging, are all a part of your image. Just like how every detail of the set and costuming in Mad Men are meticulously styled to make the viewer feel like they're in New York City in the 1960s. According to an article by Zooey Norman on ScreenRant.com, “Every single secretary's desk included a small Rolodex in which each and every card was filled out with addresses and contact information. Their desks also contained documents formatted and filled out to appear like real notices, letters, and memos in order to create the illusion of a truly functional office.” That's the level of detail you want to get into in your marketing. Every element matters.Deliver on your brand promise first, connect emotionally with your audience second. There's a scene in Mad Men when they're trying to win the Burger Chef business, and Peggy goes to the restaurant to do a focus group. Her goal is to hone in on the emotions of customers and what resonates with them. Palmer says, “you want that emotional connection, but your products also have to deliver on that basic thing. And so in a B2B context, we want to have that aspirational element. But we've also got to be able to just simply deliver on kind of a functional ROI level as well.” So focus on your brand promise first before tying it to emotional connection as well.Quotes*”Too often we fall into that trap, and the same thinking of, ‘Well, this is popular, so we're just going to keep doing more of that,' and not going against the grain, or zagging when everyone else is zigging. And I think that [Mad Men] is a testament to that thinking, especially as it relates to creativity.” - Palmer Houchins“You can spend weeks and months and years crafting the perfect copy, but in our world, it's going to get A/B tested, it's going to get split tested, and the distribution of getting that out in front of people [isn't] linear. You have to know that that piece of copy that you spend so much time writing, that might not be the first thing they see about your brand. That might be the 500th. That might be after they've already talked to a salesperson. It might be before. There's so much more complexity to marketing now.” - Ian Faison*”There's a lot of nostalgia in this show. They're using real products, like Coke, Heinz beans, Burger Chef, Hilton, Lucky Strike and Jaguar. Because they're real, it's cool to see an ad campaign for super common household brands. Giving the listener or the viewer some signposts that they're familiar with will go a long way.” - Ian Faison“I think nostalgia is a part of it, but as someone who wasn't alive during the 60s, for me, it was almost like this exploration of history; a time to kind of live in that. And I think using real products, real elections and real world events is how they earmark it. It helps you tether to a different era.” - Palmer HouchinsTime Stamps[0:55] Meet Palmer Houchins, VP & Head of Marketing at G2[1:32] Why are we covering Mad Men?[4:30] What does Palmer do at G2?[6:09] What is Mad Men about?[7:16] How was Mad Men made?[13:47] What makes Mad Men remarkable?[25:16] What are marketing lessons we can take away from Mad Men?LinksWatch Mad MenConnect with Palmer on LinkedInLearn more about G2About Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company.
