Feel free to send gifts, cards and well wishes. But no pressure! So, I figured with would be a great opportunity to share my perspectives on getting old. By no means is this an episode bemoaning the aging process or lamenting all the things that I didn't do or didn't accomplish – y'all know me better than that! But what this IS are my observations and changes related to me getting older mentally, physically and emotionally. Accepting challenges is also a way to test myself and to put new knowledge, skills and abilities into action. Lastly, accepting challenges is a great way to connect with people and PROVE that we have more in common that we do in difference. So, I've used this analogy before, being in transition can be a lot like planning a trip or vacation. There are unknowns, there are wants, there are desires, and there is a specific outcome in mind. It is your destination that guides you, leads you, and provides the proof that you're on the right track. This is true regardless of your transition type. I want to share a list of things you can do or try to help you choose that goal, direction, destination or passion. What ever you call it, I'm talking about the thing that will help guide you during your transition. Rewards, I've found, are everything in a transition! As you're in the thick of it – as you're doing the work – it can be hard to realize the amazing things you've done. I'll go even further and say most of us won't even recognize the things we do are amazing. That's why rewards are even more important. They keep us moving forward. Rewards break up the hard work. They inject fun. Rewards provide an opportunity to reflect on our accomplishments. They give us the opportunity to share what we're doing with others – strengthening our communities and building awareness for ourselves and those exposed to us. Rewarding yourself is an important part of life and specifically transitions. Here are a few things to keep in mind when rewarding yourself. Choose a reward that celebrates and honors what you've just achieved. Make your reward personal to you and your accomplishments. Make the reward something easy to implement or enjoy quickly. Rewards should be on the same level as the achievement. Rewards don't have to cost anything. I've learned over the past week that sometimes, as a coach, I ask big scary questions like "What do you want?". Maybe a question that is more approachable is "What's Your Legacy?" This episode was inspired by last week's conversation with Steve Reimann as he called out that this very podcast will likely be around long after I'm gone. At first I thought this to be a bit morbid, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that he was right. The fact that I'm leaving a legacy became motivating and confirmation that I'm on the right path. Here are few things that come to mind with I think "legacy": Family – children, cousins, nephews, nieces, spouses and partners Organizations Volunteer work Creations – artwork, music, poems, podcasts, blogs etc. Reputation Businesses If you get something from this podcast please give us a rating of 5-Stars where ever you listen to your podcasts. So, how can you honor and respect someone else's name and/or title? Here are my humble suggestions: Ask someone the history of their name Call or refer to people by the name or title that THEY prefer and don't question it if that doesn't match YOUR expectations or belief If you're not sure how someone wants to be referred to or even the pronunciation of their names - ASK Decide what you would like to be called – name and or title Use positive, intentional and consistent titles for yourself If you get something from this podcast please give us a rating of 5-Stars where ever you listen to your podcasts.  You can find full episodes of Thriving in the Transition on my website:  Click Here. Happy Black History Month! I guess I can be just super simple and say that the "Only" this is about forcing yourself out of your comfort zone, whatever that may be for you. All possibility lies outside your comfort zone. To truly appreciate the commonalties – you have to appreciate common experiences. If you don't have common experiences – it's nearly impossible to see someone else's side of the story – to understand where they are coming from. You can't walk a mile in someone's shoes if you not willing to put on the shoes. Got it? So, how can you better understand this concept of the “only”? For me it ultimately comes down to: Respect and humility Empathy (for others) Insight (into yourself) Curiosity Vulnerability If you get something from this podcast please give us a rating of 5-Stars where ever you listen to your podcasts. Is is possible to learn and grow from the difficult, painful, or hurtful aspects of some transitions? Our answer is YES - in fact, it is a must. We discuss this and much more with Kristine Vineyard on this week's episode. My key takeaways from the conversation with Kristine were: We can use the “negative” or “painful” events in our lives as “catalysts” to move forward Life and transitions are not pain-free – normalize that conversation Vulnerability and joy are NOT mutually exclusive What got you here – won't get you there When you fall down – you have to get back up Intentionality creates opportunity You have a choice Please connect with Kristine. What's the difference between getting stuck and floundering in the transition and being motivated and thriving in the transition? I think it is as simple as the difference between Creation and Consumption. Those that create MORE than they consume are the people that have the power and opportunity to affect true change. Think about it - like voting - you can go out and let your voice be heard and be part of the change or you can be silent and let change happen to you. The reality is that those who create MORE than they consume will thrive in the transition! If you like last week's conversation, you're going to love how Steve Reimann, Sarah Zadigan, and I wrap-up the conversation on "humility" this week. The "Humility All-Stars" absolutely killed it! This is what we covered in the conclusion of this 2-part conversation on humility: * Where does or where can humility go wrong * Practical strategies to practice humility * Love songs or songs of faith and humility And here's a recap of our wrap-up conversation on humility - you know stuff we actually talked about: + You have to be aware of yourself, your community and your environments (conclusion) + Distinguish personal or professional arena – humility can playout and be rewarded/received differently (conclusion) + Three bench-marking questions from Lou Holtz: Can I trust you? Are you committed to excellence? Do you care about me? Ultimately, humility is NOT about you. It is about your focus on others – or not. And that includes your intentions, the words you use, your actions and ultimately your results. Humility is NOT knowing. Sometimes to thrive in the transition you have to give up knowing. You have to sit with things. You have to get support. You have to ask for help. And speaking of help, Steve dropped some very practical tips on how to practice humility more – or at least to be more aware: * Explore and document your top values * Build a personal mission statement * Identify what feeds your ego versus what builds humility * Engage those around you If you get something from this podcast please give us a rating of 5-Stars where ever you listen to your podcasts. This episode is about choices. Choices are everything during a transition. Choices are the difference between getting the job or not. They are the difference between meeting the love of your life or sitting at home by yourself. Choices are even the determining factor between happiness and dissatisfaction. I'm not talking about being right or wrong; or even making a good choice or a bad choice. I want to talk about choices in terms of being responsible for your choices and their outcomes versus utilizing choices to become a victim and blaming the world for the outcomes of those same choices. We explored today's topic by using 30 quotes or pieces of “conventional wisdom”. And I pose the following questions to our listeners: 1. What is the most pressing choice facing you right now? 2. What areas of your life can you be more responsible for? 3. What does being a victim provide to you? By reflecting on the answers to those questions, I want to empower you to make better choices so that you can ultimately reach your goals – whatever they are - and thrive in the transition. Episode 10 - The Wander Society

Today I want to talk about one of my favorite concepts – wandering. This episode is all about wandering and Keri Smith's book The Wander Society. I found the book to simply be life-changing. It was familiar and yet totally innovative – both at the same time. It supported many of my own beliefs AND challenged my thinking. It reaffirmed my experiences AND sparked my creativity. So, this episode is dedicated to all things wandering and The Wander Society! One of my favorite concepts from Keri Smith's book is the concept of Perception Hacking. This is where things get really relevant to Thriving in the Transition. But you should go ahead and listen to this entire episode any way!
