This month's series comes from a book called When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty without Hurting the Poor… and Yourself. It's a book about changing our whole mentality on missions, as we recognize the hurt we can do when we try to help in the wrong ways. We need to develop a new paradigm for missions - recognize that when we go into communities, we do not bring God with us. God is already there. Ephesians 3:14-21 fmhouston.com
In this episode of Glo, Blair Linne, Aixa de López, Sharon Dickens, and Soojin Park discuss how believers and church leaders can provide mercy ministry that is effective, biblical, loving, and sustainable. Drawing from the book, When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor . . . and Yourself, the hosts define "poverty" and talk about how to identify and prevent early mistakes in mercy ministry. This week's episode is all about health and education - and the vast, deep and terrible inequalities that exist within both arenas globally. Both healthcare and education are huge, important, and life-changing things that we who live within the minority world too often take for granted. Wendy Thiessen, the Canadian director of PiFò Haiti, has a passion for speaking truth and advocating for how we can help others without the unintended consequence of harming the families, economy, and community we are assisting. She is a very strong advocate for being relational and asking, “what can we do for you”, rather than being churches and individuals collecting clothing, shoes, and toys because it feels good and it's what we “think” they need. PiFò Haiti's programs are completely run by the community in which they serve. In response to the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti an organization known as Haiti Christian Schools (HCS) partnered together with 4 schools to provide affordable education to a small community on the island of La Gonâve, Haiti. In 2014, with the understanding that moving from emergency relief to recovery is important, the organization began to focus on creating longer-term, locally led initiatives. In 2020 HCS became PiFò Haiti. PiFò is a Haitian Créole word meaning “Stronger”. Thanks to God's amazing provision and the generosity of our supporters, the organization had become just that, stronger. This is also the year we began working with GCF, God was strengthening the organization both in Haiti and in North America. Our programs have grown beyond education. Our prayer since we began in 2011 has been a consistent food program at each of our partner schools. It is a very costly initiative, but 10 years later we are beyond excited, our prayers have been answered. Thanks to the support of Trinity Hope an organization based in the United States who use local labour and supplies to provide affordable food programs all over Haiti. We currently have food programs in all our schools, 5 teachers will be graduating from teachers college this year, we are able to provide food and medical funds for vulnerable community members, and we are strengthening an agriculture project that will provide jobs and food for a community in the mountains. None of this would be possible without God's grace and the strong relationships we have with the locals in the community. Always Be Learning “Success leaves clues.” The first time I heard that statement was from Dr. Johnathan Kraus in Episode 27. Then David Jasse made the same point in Episode 59. I thought I'd better sit up and pay attention. Learning Is Vital, But We Can't Stay There We can't get stuck in learning mode alone. We also need to take ACTION. This is a big part of the Fast Track to Grant Writer VIP Program. Sure, we have plenty of supportive community and accountability, but the lessons are strategically designed for those who are ready to take serious action. After going through the first few modules, the Fast Track to Grant Writer students are taking action - having conversations with prospective clients, setting up meetings, and figuring out their services. They already have a solid understanding of what types of services they can offer nonprofits - plus a group to support them and share ideas. They've learned the importance of both learning AND action. 2021 Nonprofit Book Roundup I enjoy learning from others too; that's why I always ask my guests to share a resource that's been especially helpful to them. Our guest today is all about non-profit life. Tune in to find out how you can adapt it for yourself. Episode Introduction: What started as a spiritual journey has now become her life's motive, Kele Pandolfe talks about her journey of finding her true purpose in life and how she set it up to do good for several people around her. Episode Summary: Kele Pandolfe walks us through her story of empowering at-risk youth globally, through education, awareness, vocational training, and biblical discipleship. She shares her motivation, the challenges she faced, and the success she has achieved. She also talks about starting a non-profit and leading a purposeful life. Main Takeaways: Remember to be fully present in each of your life's experiences because they're all leading you towards your true purpose in life. Every state has a different procedure to file for a non-profit, be sure to look into the requirements of where you're filing yours. Be careful of how you use your speech because it can be both life-giving and life-damaging for someone. If there's something positive that you really want to do, there are no limits to achieving it. Our fear usually stems from those things that we do not know the outcome of. Be sure to share your dreams with the people who'll be supportive and not try to smash them. Your purpose is always going to have its people. It's important to remember who you are serving and why you chose to serve them. You can do a quick Google search in order to understand the requirements of starting a non-profit in your geographical region. The first three steps to take when starting a non-profit: Meditate or pray - take some time to think through your vision and your goals. Understand the requirement for your non-profit, your demographic, why are you starting, and write it down to get a clear idea. Find three people who are going to support your vision and your dream. Start by laying the groundwork yourself initially and then reach for professional help later. They're popular, they're challenging and enlightening...but are they a good idea? Short-term mission trips have become a key strategy for churches to engage in missions, and to engage thier people in missions. Yet sometimes we do not stop to ask ourselves why we're doing them and if we are doing them the right way. Fraser Scott and Bright Hope World's Southeast Asia Partnership Facilitator Emma Stokes take a long hard look at short-term mission trips and ask why we're doing them, whether they are giving us the results we're wanting and - most importantly - who we're actually doing them for. They discuss some of the key considerations in doing such trips well, and some of the key pitfalls to avoid. with guest Dr. Brian Fikkert, The Chalmers Institute, author of bestseller When Helping Hurts. In North America, success often means lots of stuff — material wealth. Then, poverty is the lack of material wealth. And so, to help someone in poverty is to make sure they have more stuff! But is that what poverty is really all about? Dr. Brian Fikkert hits us with a healthier way of understanding who is “the poor” (spoiler: it might include YOU, too) and how we should look at poverty. What should our goal be when trying to help, and not hurt? This week we're talking Rich Frazer, the president of Spiritual Overseers Service, International. Over the years, SOS International has provided training to thousands of leaders in 87 countries through more than 800 training assignments. Their specific ministry style is to serve organizations who ask them to come and provide specific training for church leaders. They search for and send the most qualified people they can find to invest deeply in the local church, wherever they go. And while they are there, they serve the vision and agenda of the organization that invited them. Rich has been providing this kind of training for indigenous leaders around the world for over 20 years and has seen the exponential value of investing in the global church in this way. I'd also like to give our mutual friend, Mike Priebe of MemoryPeel (http://memorypeel.com/) a hat tip for connecting us. Key Scriptures1 Timothy 2:3-5 Matthew 9:36-38 Ephesians 4:11-12 2 Timothy 2:2 [bctt tweet=“Why not teach a man to TEACH a man to fish?”] (http://engagingmissions.com/em010-serving-gods-leaders-around-world/why-not-teach-a-man-to/) ChallengeRich points out that more than 100,000 people receive Christ every day and that more than 2,000 churches are planted every week. However, 90% of the pastors, whether volunteer, full-time, or bivocational, have little to no training. The challenge SOS International has is getting to those leaders to help them know how to study Scripture, show them what Christian leadership is all about, and to invite them to adopt a Christ-like model.
