How to Speak Truth with Grace to Those You Love When a friend is struggling and in need of biblical guidance, it can be difficult to find the balance between speaking truth and speaking with grace. Even the most well-intentioned efforts can come across as insensitive or inadequate. In When Words Matter Most, Cheryl Marshall and Caroline Newheiser encourage and guide women to speak God's truth into the lives of those they love who are in need. With three goals in mind—growing in unity, the knowledge of Christ, and Christlike maturity—Marshall and Newheiser offer biblical motivation and practical advice for sharing the wisdom of Scripture with others. Coupling thoughtful instruction from Scripture with real-life stories as examples, this book will help women discover that they can make a difference in the lives of those within their sphere of influence who are worried, weary, wayward, or weeping.
Who is responsible for the results of evangelism? The Parable of the Sower 4 Again he began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. 2 And he was teaching them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: 3 “Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil. 6 And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. 8 And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.” 9 And he said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” The Purpose of the Parables 10 And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables. 11 And he said to them, “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables, 12 so that “‘they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand, lest they should turn and be forgiven.'” 13 And he said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? 14 The sower sows the word. 15 And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. 16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy. 17 And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away.[a] 18 And others are the ones sown among thorns. They are those who hear the word, 19 but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 20 But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.”
Christians, rightly called “people of the cross,” look to Jesus's death and resurrection as the central points of his earthly mission. But in order to understand more fully the person and work of Christ, it's important for believers to fix their minds on his entire ministry—his life, death, resurrection, and ongoing ministry today—and not solely on his work on the cross. In Man of Sorrows, King of Glory, Jonty Rhodes uses the traditional roles of Jesus as prophet, priest, and king (often referred to as his “threefold office”) to show how his whole life—in humiliation on earth and now exaltation in glory—is lived for us. As believers explore Jesus's life, death, resurrection, and ascension, they will develop a holistic portrait of the Messiah and a deeper appreciation for God's plan to reclaim sinners. God commands his people to pray together and answers graciously when they do. The Bible specifically calls on church leaders to guide this essential form of corporate worship, but it can be challenging to pray boldly and confidently in front of others. This practical, step-by-step guide was created to help pastors and church leaders pray thoughtfully and biblically in public. Through seven guiding principles, Pat Quinn illustrates how to lead prayers of adoration, confession, and supplication to God, and covers the history of public prayer in Scripture. He also includes elegant, reverent, gospel-centered examples from the Latin Liturgy, John Calvin, the Puritans, John Wesley, and others, as well as many examples of his own congregational prayers. Pastors and church leaders will learn to glorify God more passionately, effectively intercede for the church and the world, and find joy—not fear—in praying publicly. Evangelism is an extraordinary task; it's what God uses to bring people from death to life. But it has always been difficult. C.S. Lewis was used by God in the conversions of countless people, from friends and acquaintances in his own lifetime to modern-day readers of books such as The Chronicles of Narnia and Mere Christianity (the most influential Christian book of the 20th century). As Tim Keller comments, “C.S. Lewis was incredibly skilled at getting Christianity across in a way that's powerful to thoughtful people." So, if we want help with evangelism, there is much we can learn from the clarity and imagination of this hugely influential Christian writer. You may feel inadequate to the task; after all, there is only one C.S. Lewis. But evangelist Randy Newman skillfully helps us to apply the methods Lewis used (storytelling, humour, imagery and more) in our own conversations. You will be equipped to talk about your faith and engage with unbelievers wisely, whatever their attitude towards the Christian faith. “This isn't a book to increase membership in a C.S. Lewis fan club or prompt praise for him. It's to strengthen our resolve to point lost people to the one who could deliver them from a realm where it's 'always winter but never Christmas.' My prayer is that this book will help you say and do things that will make an eternal difference in many people's lives.” From the introduction to Mere Evangelism by Randy Newman. The topic of divorce is a complicated one, even among Christians. The Bible provides some clear answers, but other areas remain blurry: Is divorce morally acceptable in a case of physical abuse? If a divorce is granted for biblically legitimate reasons, is remarriage allowed? Can a divorced person become a church officer? In this short booklet, theologian Wayne Grudem offers a thought-provoking analysis of what the Bible says—and doesn’t say—about divorce and remarriage. By combining theological insight with practical application, Grudem brings clarity to a difficult topic and helpful guidance to those looking for direction. The eternal activities among the persons of the Trinity offer a foundation for God’s activities in the world. Alternative metaphysical frameworks for explaining God’s transcendence and immanence run the danger of overriding the truths of biblical revelation. Call Me Barabbas looks at the journey of both Paul Derry and R.C. Sproul Jr. Paul Derry, having a dramatic conversion after a life of scandalous living and R.C. Sproul Jr. having scandal in his life long after conversion. R.C. Sproul told Paul, "You and I know that Jesus came to save sinners. The people in the world you came from know they are sinners but need to learn Jesus saves. The people in the world I came from (Reformed evangelicals) know Jesus saves, but need to learn they are sinners." Caroline Cobb talks about her new album A Seed, A Sunrise In 2011, singer-songwriter Caroline Cobb gave herself a goal to write a song for every book of the Bible in a year. That year of writing set in motion a passion to tell the stories of Scripture through music, with imagination, artistry and faithfulness to the text. Her forthcoming album A Seed, A Sunrise explores the longing of Advent, the joy of Christmas and the anticipation of Jesus’s return, and builds on previous story-telling albums the Blood + the Breath (2013) and a Home & a Hunger (2017), the latter being named among “The Best Albums of the 2010s” by The Gospel Coalition. Featured by The Gospel Coalition, Doxology & Theology, Risen Motherhood and more, Cobb has been compared to Rich Mullins, Andrew Peterson, Sandra McCracken and Ellie Holcomb. Though often neglected or misunderstood, the ascension is integral to the gospel. In The Ascension of Christ, Patrick Schreiner argues that Jesus’ work would be incomplete without his ascent to God’s right hand. Not only a key moment in the gospel story, Jesus’ ascension was necessary for his present ministry in and through the church. Schreiner argues that Jesus’ residence in heaven marks a turning point in his three-fold offices of prophet, priest, and king. As prophet, Jesus builds the church and its witness. As priest, he intercedes before the Father. As king, he rules over all. A full appreciation of the ascension is essential for understanding the Bible, Christian doctrine, and Christ’s ongoing work in the world. Some people are thrill-seekers; others are homebodies. Some people are loners; others love big families or communities. Some people express things creatively; others consume what is created. Some sing; others listen to music. Whatever we find happiness in, we are united by our desire for work that matters and relationships that fulfil. As Christians, we often fall into the trap of basing our hopes on earthly things, even when we know they only make us happy for a short time. But how are we to experience happiness in this life? How do we avoid expecting too much of earthly things and being disappointed, or expecting too little and becoming cynics? In this book, recovering cynic Barnabas Piper helps us to throw off both the unrealistic expectations that end in disappointment and the guilty sense that Christians are not meant to have fun. He shows how having a clear view of the reality of the fall and the promise of redemption frees us to live a life that's grounded, hopeful and genuinely happy.

God's Design for the Church: A Guide for African Pastors and Ministry Leaders The church in Africa is growing rapidly, but its growth has come at the expense of depth and maturity. Because of this, there is a dire need for a biblical understanding of what the church should be. Interview with Joe Rigney - Strangely Bright: Can You Love God Learn to Delight in God and in His Good Gifts At the heart of the Christian life lies the tension of the single-minded pursuit of the glory of God and the deep enjoyment of the things that God has made. How can Christians enjoy the good things of earth? Whether it’s a delicious meal or a game night with friends, listening to jazz or watching baseball, earthly joys often seem to compete with a deep love for God. Scripture supports both the enjoyment of the Creator and the enjoyment of the creation, revealing that this tension in the Christian life is also found in the Bible. In this accessible book, Joe Rigney displays how Christians can delight in God and enjoy his good gifts. About Joe Joe Rigney (PhD, University of Chester) is assistant professor of theology and literature at Bethlehem College & Seminary in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is also a pastor at Cities Church and the author of Live Like a Narnian and The Things of Earth. He lives in Minneapolis with his wife and three sons. Interview with Mark Talbot - When the Stars Disappear- Help and Hope from Stories of Suffering in Scripture Suffering and the Christian Life, Volume 1 From the moment Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating from the forbidden tree, suffering has been part of earthly life. Heartache, loneliness, sickness, depression, and death serve as constant reminders of this somber reality. Even Christians, who will know the glory of the life to come, can experience great suffering—sometimes so deep and disruptive that it dominates their consciousness and threatens to overwhelm their faith and hope. In When the Stars Disappear, Mark Talbot encourages readers to digest the lessons of some of the Bible’s great saints who, when faced with similar trials, learned to continue believing and hoping as they realized that God in his steadfast love continued caring for them. Mark Talbot (PhD, University of Pennsylvania) is associate professor of philosophy at Wheaton College. His areas of expertise include philosophical psychology, philosophical theology, David Hume, Augustine, and Jonathan Edwards. He and his wife, Cindy, have one daughter and three grandchildren. Mark attends Christ Presbyterian Church in Roselle, Illinois.
Interview with David Murray - Why Is My Teenager Feeling Like This? Many parents of teenagers know the feeling: instead of the confident, happy, hopeful young adult they hoped to raise, they see an anxious, depressed, scared teen. What can they do to help? Adults play a vital role in guiding teenagers through anxiety and depression, and this book by pastor and counselor David Murray gives spiritual encouragement and practical direction for parents and other adults who want to help but don’t know what to do. A companion volume to Murray’s Why Am I Feeling Like This?, written for teenagers. About the Author David Murray (PhD, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) is professor of Old Testament and practical theology at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary. He is also a counselor, a regular speaker at conferences, and the author of Exploring the Bible. David and his wife, Shona, attend Grand Rapids Free Reformed Church.
Interview with Dane Ortlund - Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers CHRIST’S HEART FOR HIS PEOPLE —It can be easy for Christians to describe who Jesus was and what he did: he is the Savior; he taught parables; he had twelve disciples; and he died, was resurrected, and now sits in heaven with God the Father. But when asked about what Christ’s heart is like, the answers aren’t as easy. Many Christians tend to think that Christ tolerates them on some level or that he is disappointed with them. But what does the Bible say about the heart of Christ for his people? In his new book, Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers (Crossway, April 2020), author Dane Ortlund reminds Christians that Christ’s heart is just that: gentle and lowly. “We naturally think of Jesus touching us the way a little boy reaches out to touch a slug for the first time—face screwed up, cautiously extending an arm, giving a yelp of disgust upon contact, and instantly withdrawing. We picture the risen Christ approaching us with ‘a severe and sour disposition,’ as Thomas Goodwin says,” writes Ortlund. “The God revealed in the Scripture deconstructs our intuitive predilections and startles us with one whose infinitude of perfections is matched by his infinitude of gentleness. Indeed, his perfections include his perfect gentleness. It is who he is. It is his very heart.” Gentle and Lowly counters many false assumptions about the heart of Christ for his people: • He is not burdened or lessened in any way by the sins and sufferings of his people; rather, he delights when they come to him in their failures • His heart is not “far off and distant” now that he is in heaven • The deeper our sin, the deeper his gentleness • He will love his people until the end, because he cannot bear to do otherwise By knowing Christ’s heart for his people, Christians will understand more deeply that the gospel is more than just legal exoneration; rather it “also sweeps us into Christ’s very heart.” This knowledge changes and calms how believers live the Christian life. “The battle of the Christian life is bringing your own heart into alignment with Christ’s; that is, getting up each morning and replacing your natural orphan-mindset with a mindset of full and free adoption into the family of God through the work of Christ your older brother, who loved you and gave himself for you out of Follow Dane on Twitter - https://twitter.com/daneortlund Buy the book here - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gentle-Lowly... #DaneOrtlund #GentleandLowly
