Grab a notebook and settle in—you’re going to want to take notes from this week’s episode of Beyond Influential. I’m excited to welcome back my friend and returning Beyond Influential guest, Mikhail Alfon, for a candid and wide-ranging conversation full of valuable insights you won’t want to miss. Mikhail is the Orange County-based entrepreneur behind the rapidly-growing marketing agency Blue Light Media, and host of the podcast Oversharing with Mikhail Alfon.  As an entrepreneur, it’s important to have others you can count on to truly be there without expectation, and I know I can always rely on Mikhail to operate with integrity.  I usually do a good amount of prep work when it comes to interviews, but this week’s episode was a completely behind-the-scenes, real-life catch up session. I really can’t stress enough how much value is in this episode.  We chat about the evolution of Mikhail’s business since our last episode, his popular Instagram hashtag #EarnYourSunrise, and have a really honest and in-depth conversation about our respective takes on team-building, hiring, company culture, content creation, podcasting, setting high standards in your business, and more!  This Beyond Influential is basically a private conversation we are releasing publicly about the important topics affecting our businesses in real time.   Book Recommendation Strengthsfinder 2.0 has come up in multiple conversations I’ve had with successful business owners recently. I’ve personally found this book very helpful, not only from a self-awareness perspective, but also for hiring the right team members for the right roles.* https://www.amazon.com/dp/159562015X/?ref=exp_brittanykrystle_dp_vv_d   Don't want to miss an episode (or valuable free resources!)? This episode is about who you are, your personality traits, and providing resources to help you articulate your personality if this is a challenging exercise for you. It's all about the internal assessment.   The meat of this episode presents different questions to get you to think about your personality in every-day work situations. Think about how you operate and what you would prefer.   Remember, this podcast isn't just about me speaking to you, it's about taking action.   I thought I knew myself pretty well after working for a while and going to grad school, but I soon realized that I had a host of preferences I didn't know I had. I also started paying attention to others preferences so I could learn and be mindful of what worked best for them. This type of attention is what creates a positive work environment and creates trust among colleagues.   I also go into Emotional Intelligence to define what it is, the 5 components, and why it's important to your career success.   There are three personality assessments I recommend in the episode: 1. MBTI - Meyers-Briggs Type Assessment 2. Clifton Strengths 3. Enneagram   I want to caveat first that assessments are a starting point. They will not magically answer all of life's questions for you, though some feel that way. You won't always agree with the results, which is actually good because it means you are learning to articulate who you are!   These aren't the only assessments out there, but they are the ones I use frequently and prefer over others. Here are links to helpful websites for these assessments:   1. MBTI - Meyers-Briggs Type Assessment You can find free MBTI assessment online, but they will not replace the real assessment. MBTI can only be distributed by a certified coach. When I start up coaching in 2020, the MBTI will be an assessment I use with clients. Please sign up to receive our emails so you are the first to know when coaching is available. https://www.16personalities.com This is my favorite site for quick MBTI information and content. 2. Clifton Strengths You can take the assessment here without a coach to interpret: https://www.gallup.com/cliftonstrengths/en/252137/home.aspx You can also purchase a book that has a code in it. These are the books I recommend: https://www.amazon.com/Strengths-Based-Leadership-Leaders-People/dp/1595620257/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=strengths+2.0&qid=1576776738&sr=8-4 https://www.amazon.com/StrengthsFinder-2-0-Tom-Rath/dp/159562015X/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=strengths+2.0&qid=1576776738&sr=8-1   3. Enneagram You can take the assessment here without a coach to interpret: https://www.enneagraminstitute.com This site also has good descriptions: https://www.enneagraminstitute.com/type-descriptions I also recommend the Instagram Account @enneagramandcoffee https://www.instagram.com/enneagramandcoffee/ and the podcast Typology: https://www.typologypodcast.com   More information on Emotional Intelligence and my reference for the episode: https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_45.htm I also recommend this book: https://www.amazon.com/Emotional-Intelligence-2-0-Travis-Bradberry/dp/0974320625/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3BZ66L18ULDQQ&keywords=emotional+intelligence+2.0&qid=1576777285&sprefix=em%2Caps%2C196&sr=8-3 Take our quick assessment to determine if you should quit your job! Click HERE! Real Job Talk
Episode 20: Career change perspective with Andrew Miller

Real Job Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 24, 2019 43:45

How do you go about considering and executing a job change? Liz & Kat talk with technologist Andrew Miller about his thoughtful process: when to leave, what to go towards, playing to your strengths, taking sabbaticals, and activating your network. Andrew is a technologist based out of South Carolina. He started as a consultant, implementing IT systems, and then went into pre-sales consulting. He then joined the fast-growing Silicon Valley startup Rubrik where he managed a team of other technologists. After taking some time off, he is now working for Pure Storage, another Silicon Valley leader. When Andrew evaluates a job change, he looks at the risk vs the reward. He wants a job where he cares enough to do good work, but not so much that he loses himself in the job. This is a challenge for people who work in an area that they're passionate about! His moves have been around finding himself under stressed in a role, and lthen looking at himself and seeing if he can adapt to this environment that's causing the stress. If there is something he can’t change, and the job is turning him into someone he doesn’t want to be, he makes a change. Big tip: make sure you’re running to something vs running from something. Always have a positive motion pulling you forwards. We talk with Andrew about taking a break between jobs. We usually recommends against it, unless you’re someone who can do it without the stress of the unknown. We talk with Andrew about how he structures his sabbaticals. Andrew mixes personal development, family time, and travel. His sabbaticals allow him to pause himself and focus on his family and wants to take time with his kids to get to know them in each age. That kind of a break, despite the uncertainty, is an opportunity that Andrew takes advantage of. For personal development, he reads a lot. He likes What Got You Here, Won’t Get You There (https://www.amazon.com/What-Got-Here-Wont-There/dp/1610660137) and Strengths Finder (https://www.amazon.com/StrengthsFinder-2-0-Tom-Rath/dp/159562015X/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1569342840&sr=1-3) tool and book to help you figure out what you’re good at. Andrew also connects with his network when on break: he lunches and coffees with people who he would like to see more. He also asks for feedback. There’s an agenda to sabbatical: get things done and re-engage when you are ready. Make a plan and put together your must have list through reflection, education, and meeting with your board of advisors. Liz asks about financial security, and Andrew talks about saving for sabbatical. He looks at the total financial impact, and being on the same page with your partner in terms of the financial effects of a sabbatical. The more your personal identity is centered around your job, the harder it is. Being a whole person, with a full life outside of work, helps with that. How Andrew makes his must-have list: #1 is practical: location, travel, and salary.; #2 is good people and technology he believes in “enough”. He reaches out to people at the company to see what it’s like there. Tip: If you reach out to someone about a company and they don’t respond, listen to that silence…. As he's doing his search, Andrew writes notes on his white board, and uses it to reflect on roles to make sure he’s on track. When you’re networking, you learn about what’s coming up. Sometimes with a new role or a small company, there might not even even be a job description yet, or the job description is really broad. You need to figure out what they want, how you fit, and the company may even be willing to change the role to be a better fit for you if they want you on the team. Andrew asks questions during the interview process to evaluate roles. He tries to keep it in conversational mode vs interview mode. He asks what success looks like on different timelines. He also asks concerns at the end of each conversation. He looks at jobs that will be a stretch, but also that use his current skills. And, if you get an opportunity and feel like you’ll regret turning it down, that’s a good indicator you should go for it. Know yourself, your strengths and what you want to bring to a role. Once he gets the offer, how does Andrew negotiate, especially when on sabbatical? Talk with peers and do online research around pay, but also tell them where you were. Tell them you’re interviewing, and this is what you’re talking about. Be transparent with the companies you are interviewing with about where you are in the process. Andrew approaches his career like the thoughful and thorough engineer that he is. Thanks, Andrew, for sharing how you are managing your successful career! She invested in Elements Massage nine years ago and serves as a member of the franchisee leadership team for WellBiz Brands, the franchisor for Elements. Choosing a Franchise Choosing a franchise is an individualized process. Aimee discusses the process she followed before deciding to work with the Elements Massage franchise. She also talks about key components that should be assessed during the decision making phase of choosing a franchise. Research and Practicality Aimee emphasizes the importance of research to ensure that you choose a franchise that not only suits what is important to you but also systems are compatible with your goals and personality. She also suggests that grit is a necessary component to owning a franchise, because, in the end, you are still a business owner. There will be ups and downs along the way. It is important, as a business owner, to persevere through even the toughest times to be successful. Realities Hone in on your strengths and weaknesses. I am simply thrilled to introduce my former SE manager from Cisco, Rusty Heird. He has one of the lowest CCIE numbers I’ve seen at #1753 in R&S for 20 years and was great mentor to me helping me push myself to always grow. I can’t wait to dive into his past and current projects and gather his thoughts on what it takes to become a rockstar SE on his team and what he looks for when recruiting for top talent and more!   Sponsor: www.zerotoEngineer.com - Level up and become a full stack network engineer!   Your favorite quote? Career Talk: Learn - Grow - Thrive

Have you ever wondered how your self awareness impacts your work? Or how personal development impacts your work? Today we are talking about self awareness, this is really important both at work and at home. Today we are talking about 7 things you need to be self aware of: 1) Strengths What do you do well? What are the things you totally awesome at 2) Weaknesses Where are your areas of opportunity? What are the things you can still grow in? What do you need improvement on? A couple tools you can use to help better understand yourself are: 1) Myers Briggs personality test Check out: 16personalities.com 2) Strengths Finder (book) Here is a link to the book on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/StrengthsFinder-2-0-Tom-Rath/dp/159562015X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484006734&sr=8-1&keywords=strengths+finder When I first got into personal development and looked at these two tools, I was literally blown away by all the information I learned. It’s not that we don’t know ourselves, its really putting that information into words and turning that into actionable items. 3) Triggers When you are stressed what triggers you to get upset, frustrated, disengaged, distracted, etc? Once you understand your triggers, you need to put systems in place to help avoid or overcome those triggers. 4) Asking yourself why you feel a certain way about certain situations When you think about how you feel, think about why you are feeling that way 5) Asking yourself if you ever get irrationally angry at work We all get upset, frustrated, angry, etc at work. But ask yourself if you get irrationally angry, then ask yourself why. Then take that answer and ask yourself why, and repeat this process a couple more times. This will help you understand the entire situation 6) Ask yourself if any of your ‘weaknesses’ can be considered strengths? 7) Ask yourself if you plan to work on your strengths? Or work on your weaknesses? Do you want to make a few weaknesses a little bit better or do you want to take your strengths and make them excellent? Know yourself and understand yourself so we can do better! Leen Abdel Jaber comes from Jordan, she also lived in the FRANCE, in Egypt and today she lives in Algeria with her husband and 3 boys. While traveling from a country to another with her family for her husband’s job, Leen spent the last decade as the founder and executive director of an NGO called INJAZ (http://www.injazalarab.org) mobilizing the private sector and ministries of Education in Jordan, Egypt and Algeria to join forces in creating a new generation of business-minded youth who will become entrepreneurs and employees of choice for corporations. For instance, in the past 5 years, Leen’s efforts in Algeria led to reaching more than 6000 young Algerians across 9 cities and 20 universities and making more that 22 Algerian private companies participate to board of INJAZ and commit to empowering the youth in Algeria. Glimpse on Leen’s insights in this episode: How she lost sense of her value on the labor market after being away for just two years to take care of her child. How she learned to capitalize on her skills rather than on her weaknesses (check out her book recommendation below (http://www.amazon.com/StrengthsFinder-2-0-Tom-Rath/dp/159562015X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1452470489&sr=1-1&keywords=strength+finder+2.0) !).
