Have you ever been hypnotized? When you hear the word hypnosis, I'm willing to bet the first thing you think of is those stage performances where an audience member is instructed to do something ridiculous. But in reality, hypnosis is so much more than that, and it can truly benefit you in many ways. Whether you want to stress less, sleep better, manage pain, lose weight, overcome fears, or improve professional performance, hypnosis can help you do it. This week's Beyond Influential guest, Dr. David Spiegel is the expert when it comes to clinical hypnosis, and his mission is to help destigmatize hypnosis and show you how you can use the power of your own mind to heal and achieve. I wanted to have Dr. Spiegel on because this isn't pseudoscience; what we discuss today is backed by decades of scientific research and clinical experience. Dr. Spiegel has a laundry list of accomplishments and accolades, including degrees from Yale and Harvard Medical School. He is currently serving as Willson Professor and Associate Chair of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Director of the Center on Stress and Health, and Medical Director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he has been a member of the academic faculty since 1975. Dr. Spiegel has more than 40 years of clinical and research experience studying psycho-oncology, stress and health, pain control, sleep, hypnosis, and more. He has published thirteen books, over 400 scientific journal articles, and contributed over 170 book chapters on hypnosis, psychosocial oncology, stress physiology, trauma, and psychotherapy. His research has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute on Aging, and several other organizations. He is Past President of the American College of Psychiatrists and the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. He was also invited to speak on hypnosis at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2018. On top of all of this, Dr. Spiegel is also the Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer at Reveri, which is an app designed to help you learn and use the proven techniques of self-hypnosis to experience the benefits of hypnosis quickly and conveniently. On Ep. 182, we cover: Hypnosis: What it is & how it works Benefits of Hypnosis: How it can help with everything from reducing stress, anxiety, and depression to overcoming addiction, trauma, and phobias, to pain management, weight loss, better sleep, and improved focus Clinical vs. Stage Hypnosis: What's the difference? Can you be hypnotized? How to tell if you're hypnotizable Hypnosis vs. meditation: Similarities and differences Induction techniques and best practices for self-hypnosis Reveri: building the app, and the future of hypnosis Book Recommendation Trance and Treatment: Clinical Uses of Hypnosis by Herbert Spiegel, MD and David Spiegel, MD https://amzn.to/3JjA0es App I've been loving! What if you could see in real-time how what you're eating affects your health? We all know we should be “eating healthy”—but what does that mean exactly? Health is not one size fits all and with so much competing advice out there, I'm excited to introduce you to this week's guest, Dr. Lauren Kelley-Chew. Lauren is a physician entrepreneur whose background includes private equity, a Y-Combinator backed digital therapeutics startup, and leading strategy and business operations at Verily Life Sciences (formerly Google X) where she focused on devices and emerging products. She is currently the Head of Clinical Product at Levels Health, a startup dedicated to improving your metabolic health by helping you make better (and tangible) lifestyle choices through personalized data. Levels uses wearable biosensors like continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) to show you how the foods you eat affect your body specifically, in a quantifiable way. This is incredibly important because metabolic dysfunction and insulin resistance is at epidemic levels in the US and it's tied to virtually every symptom or disease you can think of—diabetes, Alzheimer's, high blood pressure, cancer, depression, anxiety, infertility, chronic fatigue, acne, psoriasis, and more. The good news is that it's largely reversible by making some simple habit changes, which can go a long way in helping to prevent chronic disease and improve your quality of life. I've been excited about what Levels is doing and where they plan to expand. They have an all-star team of MD's, former SpaceX and Google engineers, advisors including previous guest Dr. Molly Maloof, Dr. Mark Hyman, Dom D'Agostino, Ph.D., Dr. Sara Gottfried, and David Sinclair, Ph.D., and huge investors backing them. On Ep. 179, we cover: Why Lauren ditched the traditional medical practice route and her experience as a woman working in the tech scene Metabolic Health: What it is, why it's important, how it relates to diet, sleep, exercise, and stress, and how it's affected by glucose and insulin How CGMs can help you optimize your diet What she learned using Levels for herself, and how she's adjusted her diet Women's health, the keto diet, and how it affects men and women differently Optimal blood sugar levels, what order you should eat your food, and other actionable tips Behind the scenes of Levels Health—their culture, content process, and more! This episode is all about a topic that needs to be discussed more openly, especially for women… and that's money. Like it or not, money is a necessity in our society and it's also an important source of power, which means it is incredibly important to feel confident and empowered when it comes to anything related to your finances. And whether you're aware of it or not, everyone has a unique relationship and internal dialogue around money that affects your monetary habits, behaviors, and decisions. This week's guest is a leading authority on helping women transform their relationship with wealth and power so you can live up to your financial and personal potential. Barbara Huson (previously known as Barbara Stanny), is a bestselling author, financial therapist & wealth coach who has helped millions take charge of their finances and their lives. She has been featured on countless outlets including Good Morning America, The View, Extra, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Fox News, PBS, NPR, the New York Times, and USA Today. The reason I wanted to have Barbara on as a guest specifically is because of her unique experience, expertise, and ability to educate that separates her from other money mindset coaches out there. Barbara is the bestselling author of 7 money books (linked below)—I've read several of them and I can't recommend them enough. Her latest book, Rewire for Wealth: Three Steps any Woman Can Take to Program Her Brain For Financial Success is easily one of my favorites ever written on the topic and we dig into what you need to know in this in-depth conversation. On Ep. 177, we cover: The biggest reasons women have money issues and where to start fixing them Barbara's unique financial background & how she overcame a million dollar tax bill left by her ex-husband as a single mom of three What wealthy women are doing differently from the rest Rewiring Your Brain For Wealth: The three steps for wealth, wellbeing, and anything else you need The role of spirituality and neuroscience in changing your mindset The least intimidating place to start changing your money mindset & more! I thought now would be a great time to reshare the most popular Beyond Influential interview of all time, Episode 45 with Melissa Wood-Tepperberg, aka Melissa Wood Health, on Tapping into Your Passion & Staying Unfiltered in an Instagram World. And while I'm sure there have been a few changes in the specific details as she's scaled, the conversation still holds up today. Since this episode was recorded, I've loved watching the growth and evolution of Melissa's brand and business. (At the time, I hadn't tried her workouts, but since then they've really helped out when I fell off the workout wagon during the pandemic.) Melissa Wood Health on Creating a Brand & Business Around Her Passion Melissa Wood-Tepperberg is the founder of the MWH method, a certified yoga and pilates instructor, meditator, a proponent of plant based diets, and most importantly a mom of two. Melissa regularly creates health & wellness content for a VERY devoted audience online. While the wellness influencer space is saturated with perfectly curated feeds, what's interesting about Melissa's brand is that she prefers to share her journey unfiltered, from her photos to her personal struggles to get to this point. She has been open about her journey from severe anxiety and an awful eating disorder and has been using her platform to help de-stigmatize these topics. On this episode, we cover: How Melissa discovered her passion & the journey to making it a scalable business (and how to find yours if you don't know!) How she stopped comparing herself to others on Instagram Melissa's brand: her 3Ms, her target audience, her content process, influencer marketing, collabs & more! “Should I have kids?” “Do I want kids?” “Will I regret becoming a parent?” “Will I regret not becoming a parent?” Indecision around parenthood is way more common than you think and it's time to remove the shame and judgment from the topic by having open conversations like this week's Beyond Influential episode. Ann Davidman is a licensed marriage and family therapist, a motherhood and fatherhood clarity mentor, and the co-creator of the program and book, Motherhood - Is it for me?, which has been a trusted resource for women experiencing ambivalence about motherhood. For the past 30 years, Ann has been coaching potential parents in a supportive and non-judgmental way to help them discover their true desire about whether they want to have children or live a childfree life. On Ep. 175, we cover: How Ann started a business around parenthood indecision Motherhood & Fatherhood Clarity Framework: What it is & How it was developed The shifts and similarities over the decades on concerns and attitudes on parenthood How the decision is different for men vs. women Regrets & the myth of changing your mind “Do I want kids?” What factors you need to evaluate Destigmatizing a child-free life, what she would add to her book today, & more! I loved chatting with this week's Beyond Influential guest—it's easily one of my favorite interviews I've done for the show because it dives into the highly relevant topic of what it truly means to be an adult in today's world. This is an important conversation as many millennials and more and more Gen Z-ers are currently trying to be an adult while simultaneously starting to raise the next generation of adults. New York Times bestselling author Julie Lythcott-Haims is a speaker, teacher, mentor, and activist who brings so much value and experience to the table and delivers insight after insight in this conversation. As the former Stanford dean of freshmen and undergraduate advising, Julie has encountered countless twenty and thirty somethings who feel they're just playing the part of “adult,” while internally struggling with anxiety and stress. She has written multiple books that I can highly recommend. Her first book, How to Raise an Adult, led to a popular Ted Talk on How to Raise Successful Kids Without Overparenting. And now her most recent book, Your Turn: How to Be an Adult, examines and answers the question, “What does it really mean to be an adult today?” and includes practical strategies for living a more authentic adult life. In Ep. 174, we cover: Julie's journey from lawyer to creating her own role at Stanford to acclaimed author The overparenting phenomenon and its effects Why many millennials don't feel confident in their adulting skills What it actually means to be an adult (and why it's a process, not a checklist) Why you need to stop “playing it safe” in order to live your most authentic life, and more! Update: This episode with Drew Afualo was originally posted September 21, 2021, and since then she's continued to blow up with over 6.6M TikTok followers. When we spoke, Drew said one of her dreams was having her own talk show, and now she's the host of a weekly show, The Comment Section, where she and her guests explore their dreaded TikTok comment sections. This week's guest Drew Afualo DOES NOT hold back. Drew Afualo is a TikTok star who gained popularity through her comedic videos roasting misogynists and other toxic men. She has quickly grown to over one million followers and counting. Drew's wit is strategic and she's been a beacon of confidence for women on TikTok—empowering them to not settle for less than they deserve. She's also an ally to women of color and other marginalized communities. We had a great conversation about her journey, including getting fired from her dream job, and realizing that the dream wasn't actually the dream, how she ended up on TikTok, how she decides who to roast, how she handles haters and more. On Ep. 165 with Drew Afualo we discuss: Drew's journey to TikTok after being fired from her dream job The art of roasting toxic men and empowering women Her content process: From choosing who to roast to recording and editing her videos How she deals with haters, clout-seeking males, and moderating her TikTok comments Drew's stance on being an ally to marginalized communities Having her account banned multiple times and why you can't rely on only one platform Becoming a full-time TikToker, brand partnerships, and more! Are you too hard on yourself? Do you hold yourself to the highest standards and demand perfection? For many entrepreneurs, self-compassion and being nice to yourself usually aren't at the top of the to-do list. It's common for business owners and high achievers to put pressure on themselves as a way to motivate, perform, and succeed. (And you might not even notice the negative ways you speak to yourself.) While this may be effective in the short term, ultimately it's harmful and doesn't produce the desired results in the long-term. Self-compassion is essential for entrepreneurs to succeed sustainably. When most people think of self-compassion, it's usually associated with complacency or lack of ambition and drive, when it's actually the opposite. It turns out (and research shows) that self-compassion is highly effective for helping increase motivation and achieve your goals. This week's Beyond Influential guest, Dr. Kristin Neff, is a pioneer and one of the most influential researchers in the field of self-compassion. Nearly 20 years ago, she conducted the first self-compassion empirical studies, including setting the standard to define and measure it and has been leading the way since. She has authored several bestselling books that I can recommend, including Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself and The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook. Her newest book, Fierce Self-Compassion: How Women Can Harness Kindness to Speak Up, Claim Their Power, and Thrive, is a must-read for all women. On Ep. 173, we cover: What is self-compassion & how it's different from self-esteem and empathy The two types of self-compassion: Fierce vs. tender Myths and misunderstandings around self-compassion Why self-compassion is more effective than criticism for successful achievement How self-compassion increases your ability to be authentic How to practice self-compassion, why it's especially important for women, and more! This week's episode is an awesome conversation I had with retired Marine Corps Captain Rich Cardona for his podcast, The Leadership Locker. I love that he says starting and growing a business is harder than it was to serve in the United States Marines. We had a great conversation not only during the interview, but also after we finished recording. We really hit it off, and I appreciate how incredibly thoughtful and intentional he is around the integrity of his podcast and it's an honor to have been a guest on his show. I definitely recommend checking out the Leadership Locker Podcast as well as his recently-started podcast on NFT's called NFTs for Newbies. In this conversation, we chat about all things personal branding and the pivots I'm currently making in my own personal brand and business. On Ep. 170, we talk: Tips for building your personal brand: Getting started, content creation, niching down vs. going broad, & keeping it authentic Important lessons I learned before starting my own business Happiness, sunk cost fallacy, and why you need to listen to your gut Designing my business around life and not my life around business Why I'm pivoting and going all in on Beyond Influential, and more! I love love love this week's guest, Christi Lukasiak. You might recognize her from the hit reality Lifetime series Dance Moms, but I actually first became aware of her when she joined my community and became one of my coaching clients, and it wasn't until after that point that I learned about her time on reality TV. We've since become friends, and what you see is what you get. On top of being incredibly smart and a boss, she's just as hilarious as she comes across on the show and social media. I ended up watching Dance Moms to prepare for this conversation and I see why she's still everyone's favorite cool mom. Not only does she have an incredible social media presence, but she's been reaching all new audiences through the syndication of Dance Moms on various streaming platforms. She's refreshingly honest, and for better or worse, she fully owns her time on the show and the ups and downs that brings. She's on a mission to empower the next generation of women with the tools they need to succeed as an adult, and on this episode, she gets real with me on all the things you want to know. On Ep. 168 with Christi Lukasiak, we cover: The reality behind reality TV: What it was really like behind the scenes of Dance Moms Regrets, mental health, and why she left a hit show in its prime Bullying, mom-shaming, and the challenges of parenting in the public eye How she worked with me to find her niche and why personal branding has been essential to her and her family's success Christi's business: How she monetizes, creating Adulting 101, launching her Begin Planner, what she's focusing on next, and more! Ready to go behind the scenes of Beyond Influential? As I get close to the 4-year anniversary of the show, I've received a lot of questions about my process, as well as podcasting in general (and it's been way too long since I've done an episode on!). If you've been feeling mentally off or physically drained recently and you're ready to create positive change in your life, this episode of Beyond Influential is for you (or the times that you might need it!). Susy Markoe Schieffelin, founder of The Copper Vessel and The Sound Healer's Academy, is a Los Angeles-based sound healer, Reiki Master, Kundalini yoga teacher, and Sobriety coach who has built a reputation around her deeply restorative crystal alchemy sound bath sessions that have been described as "a mind-blowing experience that is a must for individuals new to meditation.” She has led sound baths that have been viewed or attended by millions of people all over the world, including for employees at companies such as Google, Pandora, and Nordstrom, and has been featured in publications like the Wall Street Journal, Vogue, and the LA Times. I discovered Susy through her sound baths on Alo Moves and started digging into her content. Susy's journey was not a straight path. She has a very vulnerable story, and I really appreciate how she's opened up about it and uses her experience to serve others. A childhood diagnosis of alopecia led to years of anxiety and addiction, and on this episode, we talk about Susy's path to sobriety through sound healing, and how it led to her building a successful and impactful purpose-driven business. On Ep. 163, we cover: Susy's path to sound healing: Her journey from hitting rock bottom to sobriety Alopecia: How it influenced her and how she has come to embrace it How she maintains her sobriety and the support systems she has in place Sound healing: What it is, how she got into it, and turned it into her business The different sound healing instruments and how to find the ones that work for you How she grew her business, started the Sound Healer's Academy, and started working with major brands Her specific daily meditation and gratitude practices that keep her grounded, and more! If you have a hard time keeping up with all new tech platforms and constant changes in the creator economy, or you're not sure what the creator economy even is, you're not alone. This week's Beyond Influential guest is here to make it easier for you and get you up to speed. Kaya Yurieff is the writer of the creator economy newsletter at The Information, an independent subscription-based media outlet that has gained the attention of tech executives and founders. Previously, she covered technology and social media platforms at CNN, covering diverse creator stories from YouTuber burnout to how parents are navigating their teens' sudden TikTok fame to now truly digging into the business of the creator economy. It's now being recognized that content creators have extraordinary power and influence over culture and business, and Kaya covers the platforms, the people, and the deals that are newsworthy so you can stay up-to-date. On Ep. 162, we cover: How Kaya got started in journalism: From traditional media at CNN to a subscription-based model at The Information The creator economy: What it is and why it matters to you Her writing process: From idea to execution (including timelines, organization, fact-checking, editing, and more) The difference between opinion and editorial journalism The sudden rush of interest from investors into creator economy startups & the hottest platforms receiving attention right now The number one way creators are monetizing and how platforms are evolving (and competing!) to accommodate it, and more! I love following pop culture, and one of my favorite commentators is someone who is making the law accessible and relatable through the lens of celebrity and influencer legal issues. Emily D. Baker's content is the first legal content that I've truly been able to not only stomach, but actually enjoy since the time I became a lawyer, and I LOVED interviewing her for this week's episode of Beyond Influential. If you like my content and personality, I know you're going to like this episode. Emily D. Baker is the host of the top-20 news commentary podcast, The Emily Show. Emily's YouTube channel has over 140,000 subscribers now and over 10 million views. Emily has created a niche for herself where she gets to truly be herself and make money talking about the topics she enjoys, and she's created a unique and passionate community who calls themselves the law nerds. She has over 15 years of legal experience, including over 10 years as a deputy district attorney, which is huge. And I had to have Emily on the show because I honestly just want her to be my friend. We are both two lawyers who are very into pop culture, and this episode is NOT boring legal sh*t—we're talking about real life—business, boundaries, social media, and more. On Ep. 161, we cover: How Emily is making the law accessible and relatable through pop culture Emily's journey to law and her experience in the DAs office: From white collar crime and perjury cases to murders, gangs, and drug charges; Burnout & boundaries: What led her to the online space & YouTube Britney Spears & Erika Jayne: Keeping up with current cases in the public eye How she's built a rabid community of “law nerds” that moderates itself How she's monetized a business model the way she wants, working with ADHD, and more! If you've ever wondered if it's possible to monetize your content with a smaller audience while still working full-time, you'll want to listen to this week's Beyond Influential. Julia Lynch (aka @smarterinasec) is a content creator and lifelong nerd who has always been passionate about learning something new every day. In early 2020, she began sharing content on Instagram & TikTok about her favorite daily reads & podcast picks, as well as tips to succeed at work inspired by her time in business school and her day job as a strategy consultant. Since then, she has built an engaged following using her two platforms and has been side hustling as a social media consultant and a micro influencer for a variety of brands. I particularly thought it was important to do this interview because it's very common for people to think everyone online is making their living by creating social content, when that's not the case at all. This episode is a look behind the scenes of an up-and-coming influencer who is still in the process of transitioning away from her 9 to 5 but is already working with brands and making a name for herself. On Ep. 160, we cover: How content creation has become Julia's side hustle and the gateway to other opportunities while still working in a “traditional” business role How business school has helped her as a content creator Why she created Smarter in a Sec and the gap in the market she wanted to fill Content creation: How Julia plans her content, her posting frequency on different platforms, and how she balances it with a full-time job The difference between her audience on Instagram vs. TikTok Brand deal & monetization transparency: how much she makes from brand deals & her biggest brand deal to date How she's been finding success with a small audience as a micro influencer, how she strategically builds her network, and more! If you've ever wondered if you can really be successful when you niche down, you're going to want to listen to this episode of Beyond Influential. My guest this week is Alisha Pennington, who has been an entrepreneur for nearly a decade. She started her first business, ATvantage, a sports medicine staffing company, in 2012 and grew it to over $1million within 4 years. She's since hit multi-million in revenue and started two additional businesses, where she and her husband focus on coaching other entrepreneurs looking to start and scale their own businesses. I really wanted to have Alisha on because her business is different from anyone I've had on the show before. She is incredibly influential in the athletic training world and innovative in a space where she really has no competition. It's always intimidating to create something that hasn't been done before—and it can feel safer to create a business that looks like someone else's—but Alisha is proof that you can successfully build a 7-figure business unlike any other in a niche market and have the time freedom to pursue other interests. On Ep. 159, we cover: How she built a 7-figure business with a small team in a niche industry (and why she has no competition!) Athletic trainers: What they do, who they serve, and how they're different from other practitioners in the sports world The ins and outs of her business including how she got started, mistakes she made, hiring & scaling, and more What's important when you're getting started with your business & struggles every business owner encounters Her three steps to overcoming imposter syndrome Dealing with push back for thinking outside of the box in your industry Motherhood and why it doesn't define her, the importance of personal branding, and more! When it comes to this week's guest, I bet you've seen her face before! Emily DiDonato is a globally recognized supermodel—she's walked the runways for iconic fashion houses like Chanel and Givenchy, graced the covers of multiple international Vogues, and been featured in every major fashion publication you can think from Allure to Glamour to Harper's Bazaar, to being a multiple-time Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model. She has served as the face of Maybelline cosmetics for eight years and counting. But she's not just a pretty face! She's remained relevant and in-demand over her 10+ years in the modeling industry, which is unheard of for most models. Very few people have that sort of longevity in the modeling industry. And though we do discuss it in the interview, we're not just here to talk about her influence as it relates to her modeling career. She has evolved as the industry has changed. Emily is also a very skilled digital content creator who has built her own successful personal brand with millions of dedicated followers across multiple platforms including Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, where she shares her passion for beauty, wellness, skincare, and body positivity, as well as showing the behind the scenes of her life. On top of all this, Emily has recently launched a clean skincare line with her best friend and business partner called Covey. And she didn't just slap her brand on a white label product, she's been involved in every step of the development and launch of Covey. This was not an overnight process. In this episode we really dive into why Covey was necessary for her to create, as well as all the details from idea to execution, including product development, testing, pricing, marketing, and more. She really gave so many behind-the-scenes details and this conversation really illustrates the work that goes into creating a long-standing sustainable brand. On Ep. 158, we cover: Her entry into modeling & how she overcame the toxic aspects of modeling culture The evolution of the modeling industry and how the view of influencers and social media has changed over the last decade Maintaining her longevity in an industry known for “aging out” and the search for the next fresh face Emily‘s personal brand journey, including her content creation process and strategy All the details about founding and launching her skincare line, Covey, from idea to execution, and more! Want to try the Covey Routine yourself? Get 10% Off with the code BEYOND10 at checkout! Emily has used so many products over the course of her career, and if you've ever followed any skincare gurus, you've seen the 20-step daily routines that take too much time, energy, and product. Her mission with Covey is really focused on a stress-free, simple, clean, and effective skincare routine. My take: I've been using her 3-step line for over a month now and I can honestly say it is really great and I will be buying it again. I love the fact that it's foolproof and there's no confusion of what products to use and in what order. I've used the combination under a variety of foundations and other makeup products and it hasn't caused pilling, greasiness, or other annoying side effects that can happen when you switch up your skincare routine. I have pretty sensitive, combination skin, so if this didn't work for me, I'd know immediately. You are going to love this week's episode! It's an incredibly inspiring and empowering conversation with a badass entrepreneur I've had the pleasure of getting to know recently, Jill Stanton. I was familiar with Jill before we did this interview, but I really started getting to know her personally this year, both in 1-on-1 conversations we've had and in the virtual mixers she's hosted. Not only does she know her shit, but I love her attitude and the other incredibly successful and cool women she attracts. If you don't know Jill, she is one half of Screw The Nine To Five, a company that has inspired and empowered tens of thousands of new entrepreneurs to quit their jobs, start and grow thriving online businesses, and make over $100,000 a year, all while being location independent and living lives of meaning and purpose. When she's not CEO-ing, Jill also loves travelling the world with her husband Josh and their young boy, Kai. Jill is also the founder of the Millionaire Girls Club, which is a place to connect with unapologetically successful women who hype you up, inspire you to play a bigger game, and have way more fun doing it. She's currently planning her first retreat, which we're going to get into in this episode. I know I say this about a lot of interviews, but this conversation really is one of my favorites to date. And I can't think of anyone listening who won't get something valuable out of it. In Ep. 157, we cover: Jill's journey into the online space and the early years of her business Affiliate marketing: How Jill was able to crush it as an affiliate marketer and what it takes to be successful at it How she scrapped a very lucrative business model to do what truly feels aligned (and why that's not a crazy thing to do!) Developing the mindset required to become a millionaire and her favorite money mindset resources Navigating failure and change, how motherhood has affected her business and lifestyle, and more! Jill really drops so many gems in this episode. She also gives some great book recommendations, which you can find below. Want to listen to Beyond Influential ad-free and get other exclusive perks? If you missed last week's episode, it was the first episode of Beyond Influential Unfiltered, which is my more real-time twist on the traditional solo episode, where I get to give off-the-cuff commentary and hot takes on relevant news and topics related to influence, share behind the scenes of my business (and business in general!), and any recent trends you need to know about that I'm keeping an eye on! Oh, and by the way, it's all on VIDEO! You can watch below or jump over to YouTube, where you can watch, like and subscribe! Think of BI Unfiltered as solo episodes on steroids. And don't worry—you'll still be getting all of the Beyond Influential interviews you know and love, and there's a great one coming out next week that I know will be really valuable for you. If you listened to last week's Unfiltered episode, it was more freeform to test and learn. This week's episode is a little more structured and really hits on branding, business, and mental health in the context of some current trending topics including the Victoria's Secret rebranding, rethinking obligations pro athletes have to sponsors and the events they participate in, some thoughts on moves Spotify is making in the audio space, including the Call Her Daddy's Spotify deal, and more! I've got something new for you this week! Maybe you've been listening to Beyond Influential for a while, or maybe you just started tuning in, but I'm putting a new twist on it for this week's episode. Introducing Beyond Influential Unfiltered! I'll be sharing more about what Unfiltered is and my vision for it in this episode, but the quick and dirty explanation is that I wanted a vehicle to share off-the-cuff commentary on a variety of topics that have caught my attention recently—from current events to relevant trends and more. Joining me today for this candid conversation is Shannon O'Donovan, tech wizard and second in command in my business, who you may remember from Ep. 99 Behind the Scenes of My Business: Team-Building, Finding Your Zone of Genius & Leaning Into Change. And something extra special... this whole episode is on video, so you can actually watch it—just head over to beyondinfluential.com! Additionally, I've included topic timestamps with the video for you, in case you want to jump to a certain talking point, and you can find links to the articles and images we reference below the video. As Unfiltered evolves, I'd love to hear your feedback and any topics you'd like my take on, so shoot an email to my team at support@brittanykrystle.com and let us know! Have you ever read a book that's just stuck with you over the years? I have, and this week's Beyond Influential guest is the author of one of those books! I first read Paco Underhill's Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping when I was in high school, and it was one of my first introductions to marketing and the psychology behind it. And to this day, it's still my go-to book recommendation whenever someone asks me for suggestions on how to learn about customer research. This book has been in continuous print for over twenty years, has been published in 28 languages, and still sells over 100,000 copies per year... and for a good reason. Paco Underhill created the field of retail anthropology and the science of shopping. He is the founder of Envirosell, a global retail consulting firm that has worked with the biggest companies you can name, including Microsoft, McDonald's, Adidas, and Estee Lauder, and across every kind of retail location you can think of—malls, department stores, supermarkets, airports, theme parks, and more—to study their customers' browsing and buying habits in order to learn the best way to lead them to make purchases. He's also the author of Call of the Mall: The Geography of Shopping and What Women Want: The Science of Female Shopping, an international keynote speaker, and a regular contributor to The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. I was really honored to be able to have this conversation with Paco because of the depth and breadth of his knowledge. His work has really been before its time and he continues to innovate and bring fresh ideas to the biggest businesses in the world. On Ep. 156, we cover: How Paco created the science of shopping and the study of the consumer His secret to growing his business and winning clients at the Fortune 50 level How the digital world is having an impact on how we shop and why small businesses are uniquely positioned to be successful Why the US is actually behind other countries when it comes to the retail experience How women are critical to the retail economy and why it's necessary for businesses to cater to them specifically The tipping point when businesses make a change that the rest of the industry follows, and more! If you’ve heard my announcement earlier this week in my emails or on social media, you know I have a new on-demand training on 3 Secrets to Building a Profitable Personal Brand that I’ve been working on that is now officially LIVE! But I know not everyone wants to sit and watch a video training, so I’m trying something different for Beyond Influential this week. This week’s episode is time-sensitive and is only going to be available until this Saturday, May 22nd at midnight PST. This special episode is actually the audio from my masterclass so you can listen to it on the go if that’s more convenient for you. And you’ll want to tune in soon because not only is it disappearing, but you’ll also have a chance to grab some highly-valuable bonuses that will help you build your brand and business, that are also time-sensitive. I’ll mention how to get those bonuses later in the episode, but I want you to know, the timing I do mention later on is accurate—those bonuses really will be disappearing, so if you’re interested, now’s the time to act. On this special episode, we’ll be covering: How to start attracting the right audience to grow your brand and business without the hard sell or pitching Why “niching down” is misunderstood and how to use it to your advantage Where to get started building your personal brand (whether you’re starting from scratch or you’ve been at it a while!) How to avoid the number one mistake I see that holds people back from the results they want for their personal brand (and they don’t even know they’re making it!) & more! And as always, I would love to hear your feedback on this episode, so please take a screenshot and tag me in your IG stories @brittanykrystle to let me know that you’re listening to it and share your favorite takeaway from the training with me! This week is Part 2 of an incredibly actionable conversation with Christopher McDonald, a Talent Booker who has worked with everyone from high-profile billionaires to celebrities and has booked an array of top talent from the world of entertainment, sports, business, science, tech, and politics. If you haven’t listened to Part 1 yet, you should definitely check it out. Christopher has booked, produced and written for an array of programming including late-night television, cable news, web series and comedy sketch shows, and has been there since Day 1 booking talent for Tom Bilyeu’s Impact Theory, which is where he and I met when I was working with Tom as a client at VaynerTalent. In last week’s part 1 of the conversation, we talked about his background working in Hollywood—expectations vs. reality, how he booked the biggest entertainment industry names, and how it really works behind the scenes. He also gave valuable tips and insights on networking, including the biggest mistake people make, as well as strategies for booking your show and landing dream guests. We also got a behind-the-scenes look at the launch and growth strategies of Impact Theory. This week, in Part 2, we talk about all things pitching, and Christopher even shares the invaluable advice he got directly from Oprah herself on what standard she uses to book her own guests. This episode is definitely one you’ll want to take notes on! On Ep. 155, we cover: The A-to-Z of effective pitching: What to include, how long it should be, the tone you should take, and more Tips for effectively getting your foot in the door (but not literally!) Your one-sheet: What it is, why you need one, and what to include The big no-nos to avoid: What will get your pitch rejected immediately The one critical step you can’t skip in the pitching process Factors you need to consider when booking your show Handling rejection and why you shouldn’t take it personally, when to shoot your shot to book major guests, and more! I am very excited about this week’s and next week’s episodes because this is an incredibly valuable and actionable two-parter with a guest who is world-class at what he does and these are skill sets you’re going to need no matter what you do in life. As I’ve been growing this show and looking to take Beyond Influential to the next level, I’ve been thinking a lot about the people I know in my network who are master networkers—they build long-lasting relationships with people at all levels in a way that is not purely transactional, and they do it in a way that feels very real and authentic. I met this week’s guest, Christopher McDonald, when I was working with Tom Bilyeu as my client at VaynerTalent; he’s been an integral part of Tom’s brand and the launch and strategy of both Inside Quest and Impact Theory, which we get into in this Part 1. Christopher is a Talent Booker with almost two decades of experience and an extensive network of connections and relationships. He has worked with everyone from high profile billionaires to celebrities and has booked an array of top talent from the world of entertainment, sports, business, science, tech, and politics. And for what Christopher does as a talent booker, you need to have very strong relationships but also a very strong creative and strategic eye. Christopher has booked, produced, and written for an array of programming including late-night television, cable news, web series, and comedy sketch shows. Christopher helped launch The Kelly Clarkson Show (NBC), Tavis Smiley (PBS), the second coming of The Arsenio Hall Show (CBS/Tribune), It’s Not You, It’s Men with Tyrese & Rev Run (OWN), Post Malone's Worldwide Celebrity Pong League (Facebook Watch), and Demi Lovato’s project (Quibi), and he has been with Tom Bilyeu’s Impact Theory from the very beginning. Normally no one likes a name-dropper, but I specifically told Christopher to please namedrop in this conversation because he’s worked with people like Prince, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Angelina Jolie, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Dave Matthews, Joni Mitchell, Alicia Keys, John Legend... you get the picture. I love to introduce you to the people you should know on Beyond Influential, because while the public usually pays attention to the “face” of the brand, there are always talented people behind these people that make it all possible. On Part 1 of this conversation, we cover a lot of juicy topics: Christopher’s career evolution: From journalism to music booking to launching Impact Theory Working in Hollywood: Expectations vs. reality How he booked the biggest talent in Hollywood: What he loved, his approach, and the not-so-glamorous moments All things networking: Tips, insights, and the biggest mistake people make The launch of Impact Theory & its current growth strategies How to book your show & strategies for landing dreams guests Why you want “lightning in a jar” moments in your interviews, how to take your show to the next level, & more! And you are not going to want to miss Part 2 next week which is all about the ins and outs of pitching, advice he received from Oprah herself about booking, and more! If you didn’t already know, before I started my own business, I spent a few years working on Gary Vaynerchuk’s team, specifically, on his personal brand, Team Garyvee. Working with Gary on his brand was such an educational and life-changing experience, and that opportunity started my passion for personal branding (and I’ve been living and breathing it ever since!). This week’s episode was an exciting one for me. I had the honor of being interviewed as a guest on The Sasha Group’s new podcast, Building While Flying, where they focus on tackling uncertain times by adopting an uncertainty mindset—we can't predict the future, but we can listen, learn, apply and share as we all navigate complex times together. If you aren’t familiar with the Sasha Group, it’s part of the Vayner X umbrella of companies that services small and mid-sized businesses through a variety of marketing offerings. It was exciting to be able to reconnect and collaborate with the Vayner family, and this interview brings things full circle. Naturally, we chatted about all things personal branding. Whether you’re new to personal branding or not, this episode is full of valuable gems and takeaways! On Ep. 153, we cover: My passion for personal branding: How I discovered it and developed my own brand Why you should be developing your personal brand, especially if you are an entrepreneur The path of least resistance: How to approach your content strategy Niching down: Why it’s critical to know exactly who you are talking to Checks and balances: Why you need trusted people around you who will tell you “no” What it actually means to be authentic and why it matters Quickfire personal branding Q&A, what I’m up to next, and more! Want to know more about the most buzzed-about social media platform right now? If you haven’t heard of Clubhouse, the drop-in audio app is arguably the hottest platform at the moment. It’s currently invite-only and iOS-only, but they are working on the Android version and plan on opening it up to everyone in the near future. Clubhouse has been growing rapidly and is quickly gaining the attention of a who’s-who of entrepreneurs, celebrities, investors, athletes, you name it. The founders are really paying attention to the user experience and have been offering a lot of transparency in the development and plans for the platform, including frequent town halls where they update users on what’s new, what they’re working on and more. Social apps change a lot, and if you’re interested in how social media platforms grow and evolve (and listen to their user base!), this is a great case study to keep your eye on! As of the time of recording this episode, Clubhouse is rolling out Payments, their first monetization feature for creators on the platform, which is currently in Beta. I find this particularly interesting because 100% of the payment will go to the creator with Clubhouse taking no cut at all, and they say this will be the first of many features that will allow creators to get paid directly on Clubhouse. The co-founders have been very vocal about building a platform that puts creators first and are aligning their business model to help creators make money and thrive on the platform. Clubhouse also plans to make several changes to increase personalization of the app, including tweaking the Activity feed, more control over push notifications, a personalized list of suggested rooms that appear on-screen when you first open the app, and more. This week’s Beyond Influential has been highly requested and is dedicated to talking basics, best practices, and what you need to know about this platform. I’m excited to share this episode with you, where I have a candid conversation with two of my favorite Clubhouse creators and collaborators, Brian Fanzo and Scott Martin. They’ll introduce themselves in the episode, but you might remember Brian from Beyond Influential Ep. 47 and Ep. 48 on How to Build an Authentic Community That Gets Business Results, and if you listened to Ep. 125 on The Best Advice on How to Build an Influential Personal Brand Online, you might remember Scott from the clip taken from my interview on his Groundswell Marketing Podcast on Why Intentionality and Clarity are Essential to Personal Brand Marketing. Scott and I had the pleasure of meeting and hitting it off after his wife, Jill, who is one of my incredible LinkedIn Laws students and success stories (she 4x’d her monthly take home in the first month of implementing the course!), had told him about me. While I’ve known both Brian and Scott for a while now, I can really credit Clubhouse with bringing us closer and allowing us the perfect opportunity to collaborate, which really is part of the appeal of the platform. We host a weekly Clubhouse room on Tuesdays in Scott’s Sustainable Growth Marketing club, where we talk about personal branding related topics and do Q&A. I love collaborating with Brian and Scott because we all align on the importance of integrity, and it really translated into an honest and candid conversation. On Ep. 152, we talk all things CLUBHOUSE! How to build a valuable network and strong relationships on the platform The good, the bad and the ugly: what we love and what needs improvement Moderation tips: How to create a positive experience, keep people on topic, and provide value to everyone in the room The basics and best practices for using the app How to be an ally and amplify underrepresented voices Analytics tools, monetization, the future of the app, and more! This week’s episode of Beyond Influential is a vulnerable one for me because I’m opening up about something I’ve never shared publicly before. It’s my biggest fear, and it’s probably not something you’ve heard of. I have emetophobia, which is the fear of vomiting. And I want to be fully transparent about this—this week’s Beyond Influential interview was not easy for me to do. Just having this conversation around emetophobia was anxiety-inducing and though you might not be able to hear it because I’ve learned to hide my anxiety, the first half of the interview I really felt physically unwell until we moved away from emetophobia into talking more specifically about my guest’s business. Emetophobia is very misunderstood and not widely diagnosed even though it is a fairly prevalent anxiety disorder that’s closely related to OCD (more so than other phobias or types of anxiety). Even today, there isn’t a ton of information about it online. And while it’s estimated that 1.7-3.1% of males and 6-7% of females experience emetophobia, I think the numbers are actually higher than that—because of both a lack of awareness and the fact that it’s commonly misdiagnosed as other issues. Emetophobia varies enormously in how it affects people, as well as how debilitating it is to live with it. When it comes to my own experience with emetophobia, I live with this and think about it every day, but unless I tell you about it, you wouldn’t know because I still go about my daily activities, travel, etc. However, for some people it’s much worse, to the point that they won’t even leave their homes or they’ll very severely restrict their eating. And while my closest family and friends know this is a fear of mine, even they don’t understand the depth of that fear, how it affects me day-to-day, and the steps I take to avoid getting sick that they wouldn’t notice and I wouldn’t mention. At this point, I don’t even consciously realize I’m doing some of them because they’ve become so ingrained. You may be wondering why I’m sharing all of this with you. There are a few reasons: Everyone deals with things you don’t realize, and it’s important to acknowledge that everyone’s fighting battles you don’t know anything about. And though I haven’t discussed this publicly before, I’m not hiding it—it just doesn’t come up in casual conversation and there’s usually no reason for me to bring it up. But I’ve decided it’s time for that to change and to have a candid conversation around it. It’s important to understand the difference between fear and an actual phobia. Phobias interfere with your day-to-day life in a way you can’t control and can actually cause physical or psychological impairment. And that’s hard to convey to people. My best friend, who’s known me for decades, knows I don’t like throwing up. But she had no idea until a couple weeks ago when I brought it up that it was more than a simple fear, and that it’s actually a true phobia that negatively impacts my life every day. Awareness and destigmatization. I know this phobia might sound very weird or even ridiculous to some, but it’s very real. I know a fear of throwing up is not logical. I know it’s a natural bodily response, and that people don’t actually enjoy throwing up, but that makes no difference to someone who suffers from this phobia. And if this episode helps one person who’s also struggling with emetophobia—whether they have a name for it or not—it would be worth it because I know how debilitating it can be, and how hopeless it is to feel like no one around you understands what you’re going through. With that being said, I’m excited to introduce this week’s guest, Anna Christie, who is a psychotherapist and counsellor who specializes in treating emetophobia (and is a recovered emetophobe herself). Her free website of resources for therapists gets hundreds of thousands of views per month, and she has a popular weekly podcast, “Emetophobia Help with Anna Christie.” Aside from her counselling credentials, Anna also holds a B.A in World Religion and Creative English, a Master of Divinity degree and an MBA. She was a United Church minister who changed careers in 2010 after thirty years in the pulpit—and fun fact, she also recently took up competitive curling after a 30 year hiatus! On Ep. 151, we cover: Emetophobia: What it is and how it can be treated Anna’s experience with emetophobia, as well as her recovery and journey to help others What you should and shouldn’t say to someone with emetophobia Her business: How she created this niche and became the go-to for emetophobia How she’s used SEO, social media and podcasting effectively to build her brand and position her business for maximum impact, how she has no plans to let age stop her, and more! While this episode is really more about emetophobia generally and Anna’s business, if you’re curious about my experience with emetophobia specifically and how I’m currently working on it, I am happy to give more details in a follow up episode if you’re interested. Ready to create your dream future? Personal branding is the way to do it! On this week’s Beyond Influential, we go deep into my story, why I’ve made personal branding my mission, and why I’m so passionate about sharing it with you (plus tons of actionable tips!). I was recently a guest on Dr. Sabba Quidwai’s Sprint to Success with Design Thinking podcast, and if you haven’t heard her interview on Beyond Influential Ep. 147 where I chatted with her all about How to Use Design Thinking to Reinvent Education, Reframe Failure & Increase Your Creativity, I highly recommend you check it out! This week, I'm excited to share my interview on Sabba's podcast with you. Not only is the content of this episode highly relevant to anyone interested in personal branding, but Sabba also has an incredibly fresh approach to podcasting. I love the perspective she brings, and that includes how she structures her show to be more of an exercise in storytelling than just a traditional interview. Is it ever too early or too late to become a successful entrepreneur? Hell no! Not many people can say they’ve started two successful businesses from scratch, built a £1m brand in their teens, traveled the world speaking internationally, had dinner with the UK Prime Minister, and won 10 national & international business and entrepreneur awards (including The UK Young Entrepreneur of the Year). ...And even fewer people can say they’ve done all that before they were 21 years old. I met this week’s guest when she interviewed me for her Too Big For Your Boots podcast, and after hearing more about her story, I knew I wanted to have her on Beyond Influential to share it with you. CEO & Founder Liv Conlon left school at 16 years old to start her first business, The Property Stagers. By 19, she had built it into a £1m brand in an industry that was basically non-existent in the UK—home staging—and since then she has not only continued to grow her business, but her personal brand as well. It’s too common to dismiss someone because of their age or lack of life experience, but as is the case here, this can be a big mistake. Liv has already been in business longer than most entrepreneurs stay in business, and that includes entrepreneurs of all ages. Liv will also be releasing her new book, Too Big For Your Boots, on March 12, 2021 (check it out here: https://amzn.to/3bOmTBt), which documents her journey so far as well as serves as the ultimate 'how to' guide for young entrepreneurs looking to start a business of their own with no start up funds and no experience. I’m excited to share this conversation with you because there is a lot to learn from Liv’s story. From building her brand and business to diversifying revenue streams to the challenges she’s faced along the way, we dig into the nitty gritty of her business and entrepreneurial experience. On Ep. 148, we cover: Founding The Property Stagers: How she started a business at 16, scaled it to a £1million+, and expanded her product offerings Being taken serious: How she helped people recognize the value of her services The day-to-day operations inside her business, letting go of the little things & how her management style has evolved over time How she leveraged her personal brand to successfully grow her business, gain visibility, and turn it into an asset Her decision to leave school, assumptions about entrepreneurs, why you need to have a meaningful purpose to succeed, and more! Have you ever felt completely stuck trying to find a solution to a difficult problem? Problem-solving is essential to a successful brand and business—it’s how you create results in your own business, and it’s also how you create results for your clients and customers. At its core, problem-solving requires creative thinking and the ability to look at a situation in a variety of ways, which is why I crave new trusted perspectives and ideas, especially from outside of my industry. Just because “everyone” does it “this way,” doesn’t mean there isn’t a better way of doing it, which is why I am very big on collaboration and looking outside of my industry for inspiration and knowledge. The most creative thinking doesn’t happen by doing what everyone else is doing or thinking like everyone else in the industry. Enter this week’s guest, Dr. Sabba Quidwai. If you’ve ever had a creative block, or struggled to come up with a solution to a hard problem, or just wish you were more comfortable with change, you’ll want to listen to this new episode of Beyond Influential. Sabba is a Doctor of Education who coaches leaders working on transformation initiatives (like in education) to integrate design thinking practices that encourage creativity, build trust, and prepare individuals with the mindset and skills to thrive in a rapidly-changing world. She is also the host of the Sprint to Success with Design Thinking podcast, where she interviews researchers and practitioners about their stories and strategies for navigating change with design thinking and thriving in today’s world. I highly recommend you check it out because she has a very thoughtful and intentional approach to storytelling. Sabba has been particularly passionate about reinventing education to help students have the best chance of success, no matter their circumstances or background. Education may seem like a topic that’s only relevant for those who have or want children, but in reality, it has wide ranging implications for the economy, your business, and the future—and what we talk about in today’s episode applies to every industry. On Ep. 147, we cover: Reinventing education: Setting students and teachers up for success in a world that is constantly changing How to get students to think creatively & start seeing challenges as opportunities Are grades outdated? Improving how we assess student learning & achievement Inequity in education: Biases in expectations and adapting to specific student needs and circumstances Design thinking: What it is, the philosophy behind it & how it can benefit your life My new favorite brainstorming exercise and approaching problem-solving creatively Personal branding: Why it’s essential for students (and everyone else) to be doing it! Mental health is an incredibly important topic that has a critical role in our day to day lives, but one we are still not having enough open conversations about. And not only do I think we’re not talking about it, I believe we’re missing out on valuable insights from experts who can really educate us on it—because it’s way more nuanced than it seems. One topic in particular that requires more conversation is therapy, and specifically how it can benefit us, both personally and professionally. It might not be obvious (I know it wasn’t to me!), but therapy isn’t just for when you hit rock bottom—it’s actually a way to optimize your brain, which also helps you optimize your business, which is why I’m very excited for this week’s episode of Beyond Influential. If you’ve ever experienced any of the common “mindset” issues that come up for entrepreneurs around worthiness, money mindset, imposter syndrome, perfectionism—you may have considered hiring a coach, but in reality, the best “hire” is actually a therapist. One of the experts who has been educating me happens to be my own brother, Dr. Jordan Hoffman, who is a clinical psychologist with expertise on how therapy shapes the brain, and a specialization in improving the results people get from therapy. He has experience working with individuals of all ages and all backgrounds, from NFL and NBA athletes to children and adolescents to working on Skid Row with the homeless population. I always walk away from our conversations with new insights, which is why I’m excited to have him on the show this week to share his knowledge and expertise with you. On Ep. 146, we cover: Therapy: What it really is, and why and when you should consider it How to find the right therapist for you: Where to look, questions to ask, red flags to watch out for, and how to know if treatment is effective Types of therapy and different approaches to treatment The pros and cons of in-person vs. remote therapy Coaching vs. Therapy: What’s the difference and how to know which one you need Mental health resources, book recommendations, and more! “I care more about respect than I care about being liked.” Back in October, I was interviewed for the Kimchi + Challah Podcast hosted by Ashley Borden and Elaine Sir—and honored to be the guest on their first episode! Today, I want to share this episode with you because it has valuable takeaways and insights into not only business, but also into my background that I haven’t shared before. You may remember Ashley from Beyond Influential Ep. 143 From Overeaters Anonymous to Celebrity Fitness Expert: Creating Your Dream Business Out of Your Deepest Struggles. Ashley is a fitness and lifestyle consultant to some of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces and world-class athletes, and also coaches personal trainers on how to build their own successful training businesses since she’s been the go-to trainer for a who’s who of clients for years. The other half of the Kimchi + Challah Podcast is Elaine Sir. Elaine is a career mom and LA lifestyle blogger—and the founder behind Seoulfull Skin Food. She is an attorney, second-degree black belt in taekwondo, and music executive. These women are powerhouses and I loved doing this interview with them where we chatted about everything from my background to building my business, leading a team, personal branding, and more. On Ep. 145, we cover: Following your intuition and embracing your strengths Building, evaluating, and leading a team The three questions you should ask yourself before posting on social media What building a business and team sports have in common The importance of marketing research and getting feedback from your audience Why you shouldn’t be afraid of pivoting, how to tell if what you’re doing is the right fit for you, and more! To kick off the new season of Beyond Influential, I am incredibly excited to welcome back my friend and guest from the most popular interview of 2020, Lindsay Silberman! If you have not listened to her episode, you have to check it out because there’s a reason it was the most popular interview. It’s Ep. 112 on How to Be Taken Seriously by Brands & Make a Living as a Full-Time Influencer and easily one of my favorite conversations on the show. When I spoke to Lindsay last year at this time, we were in a pre-pandemic world and she gave all the behind the scenes details of being a successful luxury travel blogger and influencer. We talked all about her evolution from a journalism career writing for some of the largest publications to full-time influencer, and she gave all the specifics on brand deals, partnerships, her content process, and more. Since that time, Lindsay added another title to her resume: entrepreneur. While continuing to build her business as a luxury lifestyle content creator, she combined her passion for five-star experiences and sharing the best of the best with her audience, to create a product that will let you recreate that luxe experience at home. She launched her first product-based brand, Hotel Lobby Candle, and has absolutely killed it as she’s jumped into the ecommerce space. Today she’s giving you an inside look at how she did it. And I mean in detail—she shares every single bit of walking through how she developed her product and strategy step-by-step. Most entrepreneurs wouldn’t give you this much insight, but Lindsay did it with me for this episode and for you… for free. And she knows what she’s talking about—she sold out of thousands of candles within minutes of launch to an audience who had never even smelled them. In Ep. 144, we cover: How Lindsay’s passion led her to the concept behind Hotel Lobby Candle The A to Z details of Lindsay’s product-development journey: from idea to execution Pricing: How she determined what to charge for her luxury product Mistakes she made, what she learned, and what she would do differently Her branding and marketing strategy: How she leveraged her social platforms and the trust she’s built with her audience to sell out in minutes The role customer service plays in the success of a business, why you should support small businesses, and more! Building a sustainable (and successful!) business is a labor of love and it requires a deep sense of purpose to make it through those inevitable difficult times. It is very common for entrepreneurs to create their businesses based on offers, services, and solutions they wish existed for themselves. Often your ideal client or customer looks like you (or you at an earlier time). My guest on this week’s Beyond Influential, celebrity fitness expert Ashley Borden, developed her business ethos out of a desire to give people what she wished she had received when she was younger. Ashley took her struggle with disordered eating and her recovery process and turned it into a strength by creating a mission-driven business out of it. She is now a highly sought-after fitness expert with over 40,000 hours of personal training experience. Ashley has worked with some very high-profile clients—Christina Aguilera, Ryan Gosling, World Series Champions Nick Swisher and Brian Wilson—just to name a few. When she’s not training celebrities, you might have seen her transforming bodies and lives on The Kelly Clarkson Show or on multiple seasons of E!’s Revenge Body with Khloé Kardashian. She has been tapped as an expert in media outlets from The Today Show, The Doctors, Rachael Ray, Steve Harvey, to publications including Vogue, In Style, Elle, Allure, Shape, Women’s Health, Self, and more! On Ep. 143, we cover: Ashley’s journey with disordered eating: Her experience with Overeaters Anonymous and how she has incorporated it into her brand How Ashley turned her deepest struggles into a successful personal training business Why having strong values are essential to consistency in your brand Working with clients & the mistakes she made starting out How she attracted celebrity clientele, working with a publicist, & how it impacted her business growth How to vet quality trainers, especially in a social media world “fitness influencers,” tips on healthy ways to relax, and more! If you’ve noticed the changes to the Instagram home screen in the last week–specifically its focus on Reels and Shopping–you’re not alone, and if you haven’t seen them yet, you probably will soon. To put it lightly, the overall user and creator reactions to the changes have not been positive. This week’s new solo Beyond Influential episode is not only relevant to Instagram, or this particular update, but this is the start of a much larger and necessary conversation that we should all be paying attention to. I’m sharing my candid thoughts on the way the major social media companies, which are now staples in our day-to-day lives, view and treat their users, and why we need to be having active discussions around this topic. I often focus on the ways you can strategically use the online space to grow your brand and business, and all of the positive connections and community that social media can bring to our lives. However, it is important to be clear that as much good as platforms like Instagram have brought into our lives, there are tradeoffs and some deeper and darker issues associated with social media platforms that we need to be addressing–from how these platforms affect us on a physical and psychological level to how these businesses operate to questions around ethics, accountability and regulation. With that in mind, on Ep. 142, I share some of my thoughts on: What Instagram's newest update is actually about & why the focus on Reels & Shopping Are social media platforms like Instagram “too big to fail”? Why there’s no such thing as a “free” platform & what that means for you Mental health, addiction, and the pitfalls of social media Accountability, ethical business practices, & platform regulations The power of the algorithm, why chronological order is never coming back to Instagram and more! If you’ve ever spent time feeling “behind,” comparing yourself to others online, letting fear get in the way of your goals, struggling with burnout… you are not alone. Mental hurdles and mindset issues are something that all entrepreneurs encounter at one point or another, regardless of how “successful” you are (and they show up at every level). Even if you have all of the strategies and systems in place, these toxic thought patterns are incredibly common and can keep you from reaching the next level in your business, which is why I’m excited to introduce you to this week’s Beyond Influential guest, Topsie VandenBosch. Topsie is a clinical therapist turned mindset coach who helps female entrepreneurs overcome the mindset blocks that are getting in the way of their success. In this episode, we cover: Imposter syndrome, impatience, and the most common mindset blocks 6 & 7 figure entrepreneurs encounter Therapy vs. Coaching: What’s the difference and how to tell which one you (or your clients) need How to start working on your mindset with or without a coach The 3 reasons we compare ourselves to others & how to stop doing it Setting boundaries, the ROI of mindset work, why your business shouldn’t be your life, and more! Mikhail is the Orange County-based entrepreneur behind the rapidly-growing marketing agency Blue Light Media, and host of the podcast Oversharing with Mikhail Alfon. As an entrepreneur, it’s important to have others you can count on to truly be there without expectation, and I know I can always rely on Mikhail to operate with integrity. I usually do a good amount of prep work when it comes to interviews, but this week’s episode was a completely behind-the-scenes, real-life catch up session. I really can’t stress enough how much value is in this episode. We chat about the evolution of Mikhail’s business since our last episode, his popular Instagram hashtag #EarnYourSunrise, and have a really honest and in-depth conversation about our respective takes on team-building, hiring, company culture, content creation, podcasting, setting high standards in your business, and more! This Beyond Influential is basically a private conversation we are releasing publicly about the important topics affecting our businesses in real time. Book Recommendation Strengthsfinder 2.0 has come up in multiple conversations I’ve had with successful business owners recently. I’ve personally found this book very helpful, not only from a self-awareness perspective, but also for hiring the right team members for the right roles.* https://www.amazon.com/dp/159562015X/?ref=exp_brittanykrystle_dp_vv_d Don't want to miss an episode (or valuable free resources!)?
