Low performance at work is no good. It can be an indicator something is wrong. Often we need to make a change or pivot. Either you or your leader could notice or bring up the low performance. Why you might have low performance: Don't care Personal life impacting work Poor leader / leadership Lack of support Don't have the tools needed Not aligning to the vision or bigger picture Lack of plan or schedule Poor communication Not putting in the work / effort Can't get motivated / lack of energy Not being challenged enough / not working on the right projects or type of work Little to no recognition / appreciation Not being seen or heard Doing too much Cluttered physical space Toxic work environment What to do about it: Ask yourself how you are feeling Understand expectations / goals / KPI's /etc. Create a plan Assess if you're in the right role / working for right leader / in right organization Do you need to take time off? Delegate? Rebalance workload? Ask for what you need to be successful Set clear expectations Communicate - bordering over communication efforts / progress Track progress Get your voice heard Clean, organized, distraction free workspace Follow through, follow up Understand your impact Do the things that fill your bucket Ask for continuous feedback Merch (you can get 15% off using code CAREERTALKPOD15): careertalkswag.com Paypal: paypal.me/stephdennis13 Anchor: https://anchor.fm/careertalk Amazon Wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3T3HCEGR737Y7?ref_=wl_share Steph's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stephdennis13/ Pod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/careertalkpodcast/ Steph's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephdennis13 Pod Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/careertalkpodcast For show notes go to: http://stephdennis13.com/category/careertalk/ To work together (resume reviews, career coaching, etc.): listentocareertalk.com For the Google Survey: https://goo.gl/forms/PToleX38QgQ4EPaz1 We are written, produced, hosted and edited by Stephanie Dennis You’re awesome!! Burnout is NOT fun! Over working yourself to the point where you need to sleep for days is not cool. Being busy is not something you should aspire to. Amazing time management and career alignment should be the goal. While working too many hours can lead to burnout, it's not the only cause. Causes: Too many hours Working a job you hate Working for a terrible leader Not enough rest Too much stress Lack of support system Ethics / morals / values don't align to your organization Don't get to make your own choices Bored or not challenged enough Taking on too much at once So with that, what exactly is burnout? Signs of burnout: Feeling tired / exhausted Not wanting to eat Easily getting sick Anxiety is heightened Having a hard time sleeping Difficulty focusing Irritability Easy to get angry or annoyed Feeling sad or depressed Being overly negative / can't find the positive Losing joy / happiness in things / activities / people you used to find it in Withdrawing Low performance / productivity Becoming obsessive over things / activities What to do: Take time off if you can Re-balance workload Talk to your leader - ask for options Get some movement in on a regular basis Sleep, sleep, sleep Add in more healthy eating options / vitamins Try meditation Engage in activities that relax you Do some breath work Get help Chat with friends, family and co-workers more frequently Distance yourself from negative people Work on projects that fuel your purpose Merch (you can get 15% off using code CAREERTALKPOD15): careertalkswag.com Paypal: paypal.me/stephdennis13 Anchor: https://anchor.fm/careertalk Amazon Wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3T3HCEGR737Y7?ref_=wl_share Steph's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stephdennis13/ Pod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/careertalkpodcast/ Steph's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephdennis13 Pod Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/careertalkpodcast For show notes go to: http://stephdennis13.com/category/careertalk/ To work together (resume reviews, career coaching, etc.): listentocareertalk.com For the Google Survey: https://goo.gl/forms/PToleX38QgQ4EPaz1 We are written, produced, hosted and edited by Stephanie Dennis You’re awesome!! List of all affirmations are in the show notes, too many to fit here :) Why do people like or say or enjoy affirmations? Positivity Helps give you a mindset shift Affirmations are statements or declarations. What is an affirmation? Written in present tense Read as an "I" statement. Since I am reading affirmations to you, I'll use 'you' instead of 'I' Positive. For example: 'money flows easily and freely to me' vs 'I am debt free'. You want to focus on abundance, NOT debt. While this is not a good thing, not all conflict is bad. Sometimes we can influence real change with conflict! Ask yourself: What are you fighting about? Who is leading the direction? How are you fighting / disagreeing? Is there discussion / debate? Ongoing fighting or is it more of a situation specific situation? Tips: Document the conversation / disagreement / outcome Try to get to the core of the issue Evaluate whether or not this is the right boss for you Need to bring a 3rd party? Be ok with uncomfortable conversations Find practical resolutions for both of you Be self aware Put yourself and your self care first Apologize if needed Make the agreed upon changes Confirm you're good with the leader once the issue is resolved --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Merch (you can get 15% off using code CAREERTALKPOD15): careertalkswag.com Paypal: paypal.me/stephdennis13 Anchor: https://anchor.fm/careertalk Amazon Wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3T3HCEGR737Y7?ref_=wl_share Steph's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stephdennis13/ Pod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/careertalkpodcast/ Steph's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephdennis13 Pod Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/careertalkpodcast For show notes go to: http://stephdennis13.com/category/careertalk/ To work together (resume reviews, career coaching, etc.): listentocareertalk.com For the Google Survey: https://goo.gl/forms/PToleX38QgQ4EPaz1 We are written, produced, hosted and edited by Stephanie Dennis You’re awesome!! People generally are talking bad about others because of THEIR unresolved issues, it's rarely about you! Bullies in general are terrible. Work bullies feel worse because we spend so much time at work. Tips: Ask 'what makes you say that / feel that way / think that way'? Ask if there is anything you can answer for them Call the person out / call them in Why did you do X? When it makes sense, explain your reasons for taking a particular action Put boundaries in place Take note Talk to your leader Consult with HR Seek support, someone you can talk to Track your wins Time for a new role? Sexism is complete BS. It shouldn't happen. And it does. Examples of sexism: Every time a woman is paid less than a man Every time someone tells a woman to smile Every time someone makes a comment about your looks / body Every time someone feels uncomfortable in the restroom with a trans person When someone assumes you have a different role than you do All the double standards Pink tax Feeling unsafe because of your gender Google dictionary definitions: Sexism - Prejudice, stereotyping, of discrimination, typically against women on the basis of sex Genderism - another work for gender bias What to do: Bring awareness Call it out Check on your colleagues Find your work support system Do not accept it Talk to HR Be honest and transparent To support the show: Online Store (you can get 15% off using code CAREERTALKPOD15): careertalkswag.com Paypal: paypal.me/stephdennis13 Anchor: https://anchor.fm/careertalk For show notes go to: http://stephdennis13.com/category/careertalk/ To work together: listentocareertalk.com For the Google Survey: https://goo.gl/forms/PToleX38QgQ4EPaz1 To connect: Instagram: @stephdennis13 @careertalkpodcast Facebook: www.facebook.com/stephdennis13 We are written, produced, hosted and edited by Stephanie Dennis You’re awesome!! As we've talked about before, work/life balance will never be perfect. AND there is a point where too much is too much. We are not robots and can't be expected to go 100 MPH 24/7. Two situations/reasons where we are working too many hours: Expectations we put on ourselves Expectations others set on us Tips for when we set expectations for ourselves: Set boundaries Utilize timers Set a schedule and stick to it 80-90% of the time Dig down deep and establish / determine why you feel the need / pressure to put on yourself Schedule time away Make a self care list Make a local wish list Research and understand achievement vs. perfectionism vs. compulsion vs. obsessed Establish your why Accept and embrace and encourage your failures Prioritize ALL the things Exercise / movement Meditation / spiritual / religious practice Tips for when others set expectations for us: Try to figure out if they put expectations on themselves that you are picking up Set boundaries Talk to your leader Can you add resources to the team Balance with exercise, movement, eating well, fun, self care, etc. Talk to HR or upper management if your leader can't help Evaluate if you're in the right place Put yourself first Burn out isn't fun, feeling exhausted isn't fun. Fuzzy brain is hard. You need to take care of yourself. You deserve it!! Signs you're working too much: Skipping meals / eating really bad No time with friends Not enough time with your partner and family Pets being neglected Missing key events Brain is fuzzy all the time Feel drained all the time Surviving on coffee / energy drinks Skipping exercise Not doing the fun things you're passionate about Feeling depressed or doubtful of your abilities Complete overwhelm Feeling like you're failing at everything Episodes: Tips for finding better work life balance - 6/27/2019 To support the show: Online Store (you can get 15% off using code CAREERTALKPOD15): careertalkswag.com Paypal: paypal.me/stephdennis13 Anchor: https://anchor.fm/careertalk For show notes go to: http://stephdennis13.com/category/careertalk/ To work together: listentocareertalk.com For the Google Survey: https://goo.gl/forms/PToleX38QgQ4EPaz1 To connect: Instagram: @stephdennis13 @careertalkpodcast Facebook: www.facebook.com/stephdennis13 We are written, produced, hosted and edited by Stephanie Dennis You’re awesome!! Ask yourself: How do I help my manager achieve team goals? Am I hitting my goals / KPIs? What am I doing to make my managers job easier? Am I doing anything to cause tension / friction at work? Action items: Ask your manager how you can help Discuss your wins in 1:1's or team meetings (when appropriate) Ask for feedback from your leader and team (if it makes sense, usually does) Look for areas where you make something easy for your leader or team Ensure the goals, individually and team are clear and have deadlines Is the entire team being held accountable for the same things? Our attitude, our personality, our actions, our work, etc. Jim Rohn has the famous quote, "you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with" Friends with the wrong people: Create some distance Start talking to some new people at work No thank you Rock those headphones Change up lunch habits Alone time Reserve a space to get out of a shared space for a couple hours If they aren't getting it, explain you have some big personal goals you're working towards and really want to put major focus on work Stay kind, cordial and nice Enemies with the wrong people: Why? No reason, ok KAREN Do you need to apologies for something? Work hard, let your results shine and contribute Be kind and nice Invite that person to lunch or coffee Ask the right people for advice, in a professional tactful way Time will squash most things Try their suggestions / ideas / thoughts Don't retaliate or react at all Do the right thing for your customers Ask them how they are doing Notes: Actions speak louder than words Be the bigger person / take the high road You are responsible for you Your reputation will be impacted on how you respond to someone's stuff To support the show: Paypal: paypal.me/stephdennis13 Anchor: https://anchor.fm/careertalk For show notes go to: http://stephdennis13.com/category/careertalk/ To work together: listentocareertalk.com For the Google Survey: https://goo.gl/forms/PToleX38QgQ4EPaz1 To connect: Instagram: @stephdennis13 @careertalkpodcast Facebook: www.facebook.com/stephdennis13 We are written, produced, hosted and edited by Stephanie Dennis You’re awesome!!
