Hello Rewriters - Happy International Women's Day and welcome to this month's episode.Today I'm speaking with Nicki Coe - Marketing Strategist, Business Coach and Co-Founder of the marketing agency Luna & Lion.Nicki worked in corporate media for many years but always knew she wanted to work for herself someday. Although she was constantly coming up with business ideas and plans, nothing stuck – she was always stumped by not having all of the answers and all of the detail laid out before she began. It was only when she overcame the old story that success requires you to know where you want to go that she was able to embrace and trust the pull of the next step, rather than planning for the big end destination. Ultimately, it was through this letting go of control and the need to know for sure that led to her creating two successful and fulfilling businesses.During our conversation Nicki shares her thoughts on:Overcome the need to know for sure in your careerStarting a business with your best friendUsing your emotions and feelings in goal & business planningResources discussed:Risk Forward: the Rewards of Not Knowing | Victoria Labalme | TEDxSantaBarbara: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC6NIY56S0AThe Source | Dr. Tara Swart: https://www.taraswart.com/the-source/ Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing (Tuckman's Model): https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_86.htm Connect with Nicki CoeConnect on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nicki_coe/?hl=enExplore more: https://nickicoe.com/Find out more about Luna+LionConnect on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lunaandlionagency/?hl=enExplore more: https://lunaandlion.com/Connect with MoniqueGet ‘The Weekly Rewrite' for tips and stories about creating a work+life that works: www.rewriterewrite.com/get-the-weekly-rewrite.My flagship 6-week group programme Rewrite Your Career Story starts again Monday 30th May 2022 – join the wait list here: www.rewriterewrite.com/rycs-waitlistConnect on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/the_rewriters/?hl=en and LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/moniquelshaw/The Rewriters is written, produced and presented by Monique Shaw. Their leadership styles during the invasion are polar opposite and easily showcased in four different areas: Power and Influence Relationships Communication Position This podcast does not go into detail about the day to day leadership of either leader but solely focuses on how each president is displaying two different types of leadership during the invasion. Application: As leaders it is important to not only reflect on our own leadership, but leadership being displayed by other leaders. Every leader wants their team to work together and achieve at a high level, but conflict, poor relationships, or lack of clarity may be hindering performance. Leaders cannot press a magic button to turn on “teamwork.” However, teams do move through predictable stages of development that lead to high performance. In this episode of Magic in the Room, Hannah, Luke, and guest Ben West discuss tactics leaders can use in each stage to build a healthy team, despite the ever-changing work environment. Do you belong to a group of like-minded individuals? Maybe, perhaps, it's a club that is enlightening and fun? That can be great. A Jeep Wrangler group is fantastic for me but no matter who you are or where you live there's a group of like-minded individuals waiting to share lighthearted experiences with you...is it a motorcycle group, a book group, a sewing group? Take your pick according to your interests and passions. I call these gatherings and meetings, extra-curricular groups with extra-curricular activities. These groups don't take you away from the true meaning of life...joy, laughter, fun, self-development, being with family, friends, and the people you care most about. They allow for your own authenticity and autonomy to stay intact. But do you belong to a group that allows thoughts of a negative nature? And does that group have questionable deeds, and actions that aren't so desirable in today's socio-political climate? Fighting, rioting, protesting? Perhaps it's a group or club that might secretly look down upon you or others you know which will, in turn, dissolve your self-esteem and deplete you entirely. The groups I talk about in this episode are definitely in the news and have been for a few years now. Here's a look back in history to when the KKK was extremely popular, and then I move on to quick summaries of the more well-known groups... Antifa, Black Lives Matter, Qanon, and the Alt-Right. These groups may be, selling you something they're not... just to get new members to belong. And the leader tells individuals their well-intentioned program or agenda is a must for the betterment of the country and the whole world. And soon enough after the first couple of meetings, that hatred, and divisiveness ensues. You say to yourself, 'That's not who I really am.' No group of any kind that has to convince you to do anything that makes you feel peer-pressure and stereo-types you has your best interests at heart. I promise you. It's true. A group of people that have a hankering to treat you and others really badly only cares about one thing. And, unfortunately, it is not you. It's themselves and their agenda. And now here's the caveat. Everyone here in America has the right to think anything they want and to do anything they want with their own time, even these hate groups and people that despise you and what you really believe in and stand for are afforded these rights. Choose wisely, be kind, be smart, don't blindly follow, but rather lead by example and always ask questions. That's when the real truth comes out. And most of all try your very best to walk away when you meet these challenging individuals head-on because these far-left and far-right groups don't give up, they don't give in and they are here to stay. In this episode we talk about team coaching and discuss the difference between team coaching and team facilitation. We share some stories about how team coaching can help teams be more effective. Examples that may indicate a team needs coaching include things like, a team being dysfunctional, not getting the results needed or finding that decision making is problematic. Peter M. Senge, the author of The Fifth Discipline says “It is amazing how often you come across teams with an average intelligence of over 120, but the team at a collective intelligence of about 60.” So it's rare that you come across a leadership team that won't benefit from coaching. We discuss why team coaching can be so powerful in shifting the performance of an organisation. It has been said that team coaching is the future, and we reflect on how coaching an entire leadership team – getting them really aligned around their purpose and working effectively together – can help shift an organisation more quickly than coaching individuals separately. We touch on some of the norms that it is regularly productive to work on, such as operating rhythm, decision-making and accountability and some simple exercises that any team can adopt. We also explore how HR might identify the need for and justify the investment for team coaching. We also look at the practicalities of team coaching. One or two coaches? Does the team coach work with the individuals in the team? Is there specific training and accreditation? This episode is about who you are, your personality traits, and providing resources to help you articulate your personality if this is a challenging exercise for you. It's all about the internal assessment. The meat of this episode presents different questions to get you to think about your personality in every-day work situations. Think about how you operate and what you would prefer. Remember, this podcast isn't just about me speaking to you, it's about taking action. I thought I knew myself pretty well after working for a while and going to grad school, but I soon realized that I had a host of preferences I didn't know I had. I also started paying attention to others preferences so I could learn and be mindful of what worked best for them. This type of attention is what creates a positive work environment and creates trust among colleagues. I also go into Emotional Intelligence to define what it is, the 5 components, and why it's important to your career success. There are three personality assessments I recommend in the episode: 1. MBTI - Meyers-Briggs Type Assessment 2. Clifton Strengths 3. Enneagram I want to caveat first that assessments are a starting point. They will not magically answer all of life's questions for you, though some feel that way. You won't always agree with the results, which is actually good because it means you are learning to articulate who you are! These aren't the only assessments out there, but they are the ones I use frequently and prefer over others. Here are links to helpful websites for these assessments: 1. MBTI - Meyers-Briggs Type Assessment You can find free MBTI assessment online, but they will not replace the real assessment. MBTI can only be distributed by a certified coach. When I start up coaching in 2020, the MBTI will be an assessment I use with clients. Please sign up to receive our emails so you are the first to know when coaching is available. https://www.16personalities.com This is my favorite site for quick MBTI information and content. 2. Clifton Strengths You can take the assessment here without a coach to interpret: https://www.gallup.com/cliftonstrengths/en/252137/home.aspx You can also purchase a book that has a code in it. These are the books I recommend: https://www.amazon.com/Strengths-Based-Leadership-Leaders-People/dp/1595620257/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=strengths+2.0&qid=1576776738&sr=8-4 https://www.amazon.com/StrengthsFinder-2-0-Tom-Rath/dp/159562015X/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=strengths+2.0&qid=1576776738&sr=8-1 3. Enneagram You can take the assessment here without a coach to interpret: https://www.enneagraminstitute.com This site also has good descriptions: https://www.enneagraminstitute.com/type-descriptions I also recommend the Instagram Account @enneagramandcoffee https://www.instagram.com/enneagramandcoffee/ and the podcast Typology: https://www.typologypodcast.com More information on Emotional Intelligence and my reference for the episode: https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_45.htm I also recommend this book: https://www.amazon.com/Emotional-Intelligence-2-0-Travis-Bradberry/dp/0974320625/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3BZ66L18ULDQQ&keywords=emotional+intelligence+2.0&qid=1576777285&sprefix=em%2Caps%2C196&sr=8-3 Take our quick assessment to determine if you should quit your job! The life and crimes of Jesse James Hollywood seems like something only found in the movies, but, sadly, the kidnapping and murder of 15-year-old Nicholas Markowitz, which he was behind, was very real. In this episode, Alysa tells, Lauren, about the case of how a popular, young drug dealer became the mastermind behind a devastating crime that occurred over a small debt. Besides detailing the case, they also discuss the movie, Alpha Dog, which is based on the case, how Hollywood was able to influence his friends and crew, and why bystanders may not act in emergency situations. The Strong Women’s Club Women's Success Stories in Business and in Life
Last week I mentioned two leadership styles: Transformational and Transactional, but there are many different ways to define leadership personalities. There is the definition by Lewin, which includes: Autocratic, Democratic and Laissez-faire. There is the Blake-Mouton Managerial Grid (See on Amazon), which mixes a people-oriented style with a task-oriented style, depending on the job at hand. There is the Path-Goal Theory, which weighs the ability of the employee with the ambiguity of the task at hand, then decides which approach to use. A book called Primal Leadership (See on Amazon) by Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis and Annie McKee talked about Six Emotional Leadership Styles: Visionary, Coaching, Affiliative, Democratic, Pacesetting and Commanding, and how each style might affect the emotions of your team members. And there is Authentic Leadership: people who inspire trust, are open about the problems they come across, don't ignore or hide them, and have a high level of integrity and are consistent. Where do you fit in? How do you lead? How do you influence, inspire, motivate, stimulate and individualise? In an effort to simplify and to condense: Here are four things that you can do to begin to be an authentic transformational leader. This is how you start: Set an example: high standards, ethical choices, excellence in character You will develop and communicate and exciting and ambitious vision for your group, and encourage their development towards that end You will stimulate their intellect: Foster open discussions about the vision and how you'll get there You will care about your team: genuine concern Thank you for joining me, Edie P.S. Next week we will talk about what to do where there are problems...
