The Efficient Advisor: Tactical Business Advice for Financial Planners
As advisors, we spend a lot of time working in the business—but not nearly enough time working on the business. In this episode, Libby pulls back the curtain on the exact quarterly CEO Day framework she recently led for her Systems to Scale alumni community. With Q2 coming to a close, she shares how to create the space for strategic thinking, avoid turning your CEO time into a glorified catch-up day, and walk away with a clear plan for the next 90 days. Whether you're a solo advisor or leading a growing team, this episode will help you become more intentional, proactive, and focused as you head into the next quarter. In this episode, you'll learn:How to structure a quarterly CEO Day that actually leads to action instead of becoming another day spent answering emails and putting out fires. The five key business categories every advisor should review each quarter, including people, finances, processes, client experience, and technology. Why brain dumps and structured reflection exercises help uncover opportunities, bottlenecks, and priorities that are easy to miss during day-to-day operations.A practical framework for identifying your next three quarterly goals and turning them into actionable plans that actually get completed.Libby shares the same process she used in her own advisory firm and now teaches inside her coaching programs. If you've ever wondered what it really means to "work on the business," this episode gives you a step-by-step roadmap for creating the time, clarity, and focus needed to move your firm forward. As you wrap up the quarter, consider blocking time on your calendar for your own CEO Day—you may be surprised by how much progress can come from simply creating the space to think strategically.Join the Systems to Scale Group Coaching Program HERE! As more Americans express the desire to age in place, navigating the intersection of financial security, legal protections, and healthcare needs becomes paramount. In this episode of Talk Law Radio, host and Texas attorney Todd Marquardt dives deep into the legal, financial, and emotional blind spots families face when preparing for long-term senior care. The episode features two expert guests who bring unvarnished truths and practical solutions to the table. First, Joseph Warren, a Financial Planner with Financial Planning HQ, discusses the critical role of financial strategy, market navigation, and radical accountability when building a roadmap for retirement. Then, Regina Yockey, Administrator at Avenues Home Care, joins the show to shed light on the realities of the home care industry, the power of proactive pre-planning, and what it truly means to provide compassionate, one-on-one care for our aging loved ones. Key Topics Covered The Power of Unvarnished Financial Truth: Joseph Warren shares why high-net-worth clients need advisors who act as a "financial CEO" rather than "yes men," highlighting a 2022 case study on moving excess cash into the market during high inflation to protect early retirement goals. Accountability & Holistic Strategy: Why simple investment management is only one piece of the puzzle, and how building emergency cash reserves (especially in volatile sectors like the Texas oil fields) takes the emotion out of unexpected industry shifts. The Landscape of Senior Rehabilitation and Home Care: Regina Yockey demystifies the transition from hospital short-term rehab to home care, breaking down Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and explaining how private caregivers preserve independence. Proactive Planning vs. Crisis Mode: A moving discussion on why families must have difficult conversations early—touching on dementia progression, long-term care insurance, and overcoming the "guilt factor" before an emergency or a fall forces a sudden decision. The "Take Care Of" Clause & Instruction-Based Planning: Todd Marquardt explains how families can transition from mere "permission slip" legal planning to instruction-based planning, ensuring an elder's explicit wishes are honored and sibling conflicts are prevented. Sinners & Saints: A thoughtful segment exploring proportional justice alongside heartwarming, real-life stories of caregivers going above and beyond—using music, companionship, and deeply personalized care to uplift seniors. Key Takeaways Information vs. Action: We are drowning in knowledge, but financial and retirement success belongs to those who act on the best advice with an accountable team behind them. The Hidden Cost of "Flat Fees" & Advisor Ethics: A look at traditional industry practices of ranking clients, and why flat-fee financial models ensure every client gets the attention they deserve. Pre-Planning Protects Dignity: Waiting until an acute medical event occurs limits your choices; early legal documentation and home assessments keep seniors safer and independent longer. Instruction is Key to Legal Protection: Legal planning shouldn't just be about passing down assets after death; it must explicitly address disability, incapacity, and specific long-term care desires to prevent family fractures. -Sponsored by Marquardt Law Firm and Financial Planning HQ -Go to marquardtlawfirm.com and financialplanninghq.net Contact Information Featured in this Episode Marquardt Law Firm (Todd Marquardt): Call 210-530-4278 or visit marquardtlawfirm.com. If you've ever struggled to come up with meaningful gifts, memorable client experiences, or even remember the little details that matter most to your clients, this episode is for you. In this Efficient Friday episode, Libby dives into the power of building a Client Intel Process—a simple but powerful system for gathering, storing, and using personal information to deepen relationships and create remarkable client experiences. More importantly, she shares the common mistakes advisors make when collecting client intel and how to avoid turning something thoughtful into something transactional. Based on conversations from a live Q&A with advisors inside The First 100 Days course, this episode will help you create more authentic connections with clients while using process to support—not replace—the human element of your practice. In this episode, you'll learn:Why asking clients to fill out a questionnaire about their preferences can actually diminish the impact of future gifts and gesturesHow to gather meaningful client intel naturally through conversations, observation, and the practice of "double-clicking"Creative ways to use personal information to surprise, delight, and strengthen client relationships throughout the yearHow to build a simple process for capturing and accessing client intel so no important details get lost over timeThe best client experiences aren't built on expensive gifts or elaborate gestures. They're built on making people feel seen, known, and valued. By creating a thoughtful Client Intel Process, advisors can use systems and processes to deepen human connection, strengthen trust, and create experiences clients remember long after the financial planning conversation ends.Check out The First 100 Days Course: The Advisor's Blueprint for a Remarkable Client Experience HERE!Learn more about T2MWorks HERE! Should UK financial planners be looking at the international advice market? Andreas Hollas has spent 13 years in Dubai building expertise that has no textbook, and the career it's given him is unlike anything available in the UK.In this episode of Financial Planner Life, Sam sits down with Andreas Hollas, chartered financial planner and technical advice director at Titan Wealth International, to explore what international financial planning actually looks like, the clients, the cases, the complexity, and the career opportunity most UK advisers don't even know exists.Andreas came straight out of university into financial services, built the largest client book at HHR, and now supports 80 advisers across Titan Wealth International with the most complex cross-border cases in the business. His clients span from the Dominican Republic to the Republic of Korea. His cases have no rulebook. His answers come entirely from experience. The result? A career at the front edge of a growing market that is desperately short of advisers genuinely equipped to serve it.If you're a UK financial planner curious about the international space, already working overseas and wondering what's next, or simply looking for a career path that rewards deep specialisation, then this is the episode for you. What we cover in this episode:What international financial planning actually means and who the clients really areWhy cross-border advice has no textbook and why that's the entire opportunityHow Andreas built the largest client book in his firm without being the busiest adviserThe supply and demand gap in the international market and what it means for career progressionWhat the One Titan philosophy means in practice for globally mobile clientsThe two routes into Titan Wealth International for UK advisers considering the moveWhy moving internationally doesn't mean losing your existing UK client relationshipsWhat the Denmark/Dubai case study reveals about what 13 years of experience actually buys youHow Titan Wealth's Next Generation Leaders programme is developing the next generation of international advisersWhy the international market rewards specialisation faster than almost anywhere in the UK profession

The Efficient Advisor: Tactical Business Advice for Financial Planners
If you've been listening to the podcast lately, you know we've been talking a lot about client experience, onboarding, and the first 100 days. And this week, I'm coming to you from the Ritz-Carlton in Chicago, where I'm speaking at a conference and taking notes on one of the most recognized customer experience brands in the world. As I've watched the little details and thoughtful touches that make the Ritz-Carlton experience so memorable, I couldn't help but think about how easily many of those same principles can be applied inside an advisory firm. In this episode, I'm breaking down three specific Ritz-Carlton practices that advisors can use to create more memorable, consistent, and remarkable client experiences. In this episode, you'll learn:How the Ritz-Carlton's famous $2,000 Rule empowers employees to solve problems, create memorable moments, and deliver exceptional service without waiting for management approvalWhy capturing client preferences and personal details is only half the battle—and how to actually use that information to strengthen relationships and deepen client loyaltyHow daily service meetings at the Ritz create consistency across the organization and how advisors can incorporate client experience discussions into their own team meetingsThe three foundational pillars of a remarkable client experience: empowering your team, collecting meaningful client intelligence, and creating processes that ensure consistence. The best client experiences don't happen by accident. The Ritz-Carlton has built a reputation for excellence by intentionally empowering employees, documenting client preferences, and creating systems that reinforce exceptional service every day. The good news is that you don't need a luxury hotel budget to apply these principles. Small, thoughtful actions backed by strong processes can help your clients feel seen, known, and valued—and that's what creates loyalty, referrals, and lasting relationships.Check out The First 100 Days Course: The Advisor's Blueprint for a Remarkable Client Experience HERE!Learn more about T2MWorks HERE! Why do smart, capable people ignore advice they genuinely believe is good for them? In this episode, Joy Slabaugh—a CFP® and Certified Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapist—joins the conversation to explore why behavior change rarely comes from better information alone. Joy explains how IFS helps financial planners understand the internal conflicts people experience around money, and why working with “parts” often succeeds where logic, pressure, and persuasion fail. The discussion reframes the advisor's role—not as fixing or convincing—but as facilitating self-led clarity, trust, and follow-through, offering a powerful framework that benefits both the people seeking help and the professionals who serve them. #financialtherapy, #behavioralfinance, #moneymindset, #internalfamilysystems, #IFStherapy, #moneypsychology, #financialplanning, #advisorlife, #clientbehavior, #behaviorchange, #emotionalintelligence, #selfleadership, #mindsetmatters, #moneyhabits, #financialwellness, #trusttheprocess, #innerwork, #clientrelationships, #financialadvisor, #psychologyofmoney, #decisionmaking, #humanbehavior, #moneycoaching, #professionaldevelopment, #advisorypractice A podcast that blends the nuts and bolts of financial advice with the emotions that drive our money decisions. Family Banking Ep. #7: Infinite Banking for Business Equipment In this episode of our Family Banking Series, I share a recent family deal on a camera purchase we made together with our children for our business. For years, we have had conversations with our children about the Infinite Banking Concept. They know we use our system of whole life insurance policies as our family banking system. We've been putting velocity on our money by paying premiums together, we've made policy loans for financing decisions, and we just keep leveling up and scaling what we can do together. This deal was about: 1. Paying premiums together, 2. Making policy loans, and then 3. Proposing an opportunity for our children to buy a camera, that I would then use in our business, and therefore pay them their principal back with interest over the next 6 months. The Infinite Banking Concept allows families to do more together, have bigger conversations about goals, plans, and dreams; it enables us to keep control and profit from our financing needs. What does it really take to build a successful financial planning career, and how much of it comes down to education, persistence, and understanding human behavior? In this episode, Gary Clement shares his unconventional journey from a math major with an interest in investments to an experienced financial planner, educator, and PhD holder. He walks through his early days in the industry, the lessons learned from working in high-pressure sales environments, and the pivotal experiences that shaped his transition into financial planning and education. Listen in to learn why behavioral finance is becoming central to the future of advice, how advisors can help clients overcome suboptimal decision-making, and why understanding human behavior is just as important as technical knowledge. Gary also unpacks how real-world experience, licensing, and continuous education can shape long-term career success in financial planning. You'll hear about career strategy for new planners, the importance of early job experience, and how to build momentum in a competitive industry. 75% of financial advisers lose their AUM when a client passes away. Not because of bad performance. Not because of high fees. Simply because nobody built a relationship with the next generation.Ben Mason form Kinvault did something about that. In this episode of Financial Planner Life, Sam sits down with Ben Mason, the founder of Kinvault, to discuss the technology he built to address one of the most overlooked risks in financial planning: intergenerational wealth transfer. Ben explains why AUM walks out the door on death, why families are being failed at their most vulnerable moments, and how a simple, white-labelled platform is changing both of those things at once. They get into the real numbers, why 25% of beneficiaries don't even know they can stay with the existing adviser, why only 4% of Gen X clients retain the family's financial adviser after inheriting, and why 90% of widows who do switch move to a female adviser. They also discuss what KinVault does for clients while they're still alive, why Ben believes this kind of solution will be a baseline industry expectation within five years, and the story of the adviser who lost £2.6 million over Christmas and called Ben in January to say he should have done it sooner. At £10 per household per year, the maths speak for themselves.Whether you manage a book of 200 clients or 2,000, if you haven't thought seriously about what happens to your AUM when your clients die, this is the episode to start with.In this episode, we discuss…Why 75% of AUM leaves on client death, and the three reasons behind itHow Kinvault builds a relationship with the next generation before it's ever neededWhat the platform does for clients during their lifetime, not just at the point of deathThe generational retention gap that should concern every adviser Why women are being left out of the financial planning process, and what that costs at the point of transferCost, implementation, and why this won't become shelfwareThe story of the adviser who lost £2.6 million over Christmas and signed up in JanuaryFinancial Planner Life is sponsored by Redmill AdvanceWhether you're starting out, already qualified, or building a training academy, Redmill Advance delivers expert-led learning, exam support and CPD from Level 4 to Chartered.✅ Trusted by top UK firms

"Don't sit around waiting to feel motivated. You take some little actions, and that often gives you the motivation and the momentum to move forward." Our hosts, Stephanie McCullough and Kevin Gaines, sit down to work through a HerMoney.com list of ten things to do when retirement is a decade away. The meta-lesson turns out to be bigger than any single item on it! The list, from Jean Chatzky's financial information service for women, gives them a useful scaffold, but what they keep returning to is the paralysis that keeps so many people from starting at all. Planning for retirement can feel like pushing a stone uphill; getting moving makes it roll the other way. The list items themselves span the practical and the personal. Test-drive potential retirement destinations before committing. Tackle home repairs now, while you still have a paycheck. Start volunteering, not just to give back but to road-test how you'll spend your time when work no longer fills it. On the financial side: understand what Medicare actually covers (spoiler: not dental, vision, or long-term care). Build your HSA if you're eligible. Track down old 401(k)s and check the beneficiaries on every account. Create your Social Security account online and verify your earnings record for errors. And on claiming age, Kevin pushes back on the blanket advice to "always wait" because Social Security strategy depends on how it fits the rest of your specific plan. The bonus tip says it all: say it out loud. Telling people you're planning to retire creates accountability. It makes the stone easier to push! Key Topics: ● Trying Out Retirement Destinations (04:24) ● Home Repairs, Renovations, and Aging in Place (07:21) ● Volunteering: A Test Drive for Your Time (12:02) ● Reclaiming Your Calendar… and Your Identity (13:35) ● Healthcare Costs, Medicare Myths, and HSAs (16:52) ● Building a Social Network Outside the Office (21:04) ● Checking In on Pensions and Old 401(k)s (25:30) ● Why the 10-Year Mark Is the Right Time to Find a Financial Planner (27:21) ● Social Security: "Wait" Is Not a One-Size-Fits-All Answer (29:33) ● Creating Your Social Security Account (and Checking Your Earnings Record) (31:02) ● Say It Out Loud (32:22) Resources: Retirement Readiness Quiz: https://www.aarp.org/money/retirement/readiness-quiz/ The 5 Years Before You Retire and other books by Emily Guy Birken: https://www.emilyguybirken.com/books HerMoney.com Article Discussed in this Episode: https://hermoney.com/invest/10-things-you-should-do-when-retirement-is-10-years-away/ Take Back Retirement Episodes Referenced: Making Your Own Story: Finding Meaning After 50 with Diane Gansauer Redefining Retirement: Finding Your Creative Voice Through Comedy with Lynn Harris The Challenges and Opportunities of Defining Your Identity in Retirement with Elizabeth Parsons Practicing for Retirement: Balancing Creative Pursuits and Financial Planning with Mary Jo Hoffman Simplifying Medicare: What's Important For You To Know with Susan Sloan Cultivating Creative Connections for Lifelong Wellness with Claire Waite Brown Getting the Most from Social Security: Smart Strategies for Women with Heather Schreiber Smarter Social Security: Getting What's Yours Without Panicking If you like what you've been hearing, we invite you to subscribe on your favorite platform and leave us a review.
