Dr. Adam Mendelsohn, the CEO of Vivani Medical, seeks to enable people to receive the maximum potential benefits from medicines while minimizing the associated burden with taking those medicines. Drug implants overcome forgetfulness, procrastination, and other human behavior that impacts medication adherence. They anticipate expanding partnerships with various drug molecules and indications around their nano portal drug delivery technology. Adam elaborates, "When these medicines are evaluated in randomized clinical trial settings, they produce fantastic results. But these results don't translate into the real world in the way that they possibly could, and the primary reason for this is, as Charles Everett Koop, former US Surgeon General, once said, "Drugs don't work in people that don't take them." So, we are aiming to address this by developing miniature subdermal implants that can provide steady therapeutic doses over many months, guaranteeing medication adherence for these patients and, hopefully, improving real-world outcomes for chronic diseases." "The underlying technology we've demonstrated works with peptide therapeutics and some of the larger protein-based therapeutics. These are larger hydrophilic molecules that some of the other implant technologies have not been shown to be compatible with. We do believe that the technology could work with smaller hydrophobic molecules as well." "Down the road, we anticipate developing a portfolio of drug implants that can address adherence across a wide range of chronic diseases. But we have been pretty focused on a few different peptides and one in particular that we are preparing to begin a phase II clinical study early next year with around the type 2 diabetes indication. But the underlying technology is a platform that we think does have broad applicability." #VivaniMedical #MedicationAdherence #DrugImplants #ChronicDiseases #Type2Diabetes Vivani.com Download the transcript here

Until now, the story of Jews who served in the Civil War has been incomplete. Dr. Adam Mendelsohn's book aims to showcase their contributions and sacrifices while explaining how their time in the Civil War differed from that of other soldiers. From rations that were not kosher, to lack of opportunity to fully celebrate holidays, to relatively few comrades, it was not always easy for Jewish soldiers to practice their religion. He also shows how their views of race and slavery often depended on the side to which they pledged their allegiance. Mendelsohn also describes how the story of their service is still evolving, thanks to the work of scholars and archivists who are generating a database of every Jew who served and sacrificed.Information on "Jewish Soldiers in the Civil War" can be found at https://nyupress.org/9781479812233/jewish-soldiers-in-the-civil-war/Professor Mendelsohn's website can be found at https://humanities.uct.ac.za/department-historical-studies/people-academic-staff/associate-professor-adam-mendelsohnThe Shapell Roster of Jewish soldiers in the Civil War can be found at https://www.shapell.org/roster/Support our show at https://patreon.com/axelbankhistory**A portion of every contribution is given to a charity for children's literacy** "Axelbank Reports History and Today" can be found on social media at https://twitter.com/axelbankhistory https://instagram.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://facebook.com/axelbankhistory

Shawn and Marcus get together to discuss Game 1 of the NBA Finals plus what they see happening the rest of the series. They have lots of praise for DeAndre Ayton and believe he should be the MVP if the Suns win. Marcus feels that there is a hard cap to the Bucks' abilities to win the championship as Devin Booker did not have a great game and the Suns still dominated. Shawn is very interested to see if free throw discrepancies can affect the rest of the series in Bucks favour and that the Bucks must get Ayton into foul trouble every game for a better chance. We are privileged to host Professor Adam Mendelsohn in this episode. He discusses important findings from a recent set of surveys conducted by the Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies. Although at first glance, the South African community survey is not immediately relevant to Jewish education, it is obvious to me that these results are very significant indeed. Schools are embedded in a community and serve the needs of that society, while also shaping that society. Many of the survey findings discussed shape and are shaped by the Jewish education system.  This is an important conversation to set the scene for deep questions such as: What is the purpose of Jewish education in SA? In Cape Town? What are the best approaches? And how shall we proceed? I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed speaking with Adam.  You can read about our guest's bio below.  Kaplan Centre: http://www.kaplancentre.uct.ac.za/ Surveys: http://www.kaplancentre.uct.ac.za/kaplancentre/reports Adam D. Mendelsohn is Director of the Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies & Research and Associate Professor of History at the University of Cape Town. He is the author of The Rag Race: How Jews Sewed Their Way to Success in America and the British Empire (New York University Press, 2014) and co-editor of Jews and the Civil War: A Reader (with Jonathan D. Sarna, New York University Press, 2010) and Transnational Traditions: New Perspectives on American Jewish History (with Ava Kahn, Wayne State University Press, 2014). He was Chief Historian of the exhibition The First Jewish Americans at the New-York Historical Society, and co-curator of By Dawn’s Early Light at the Princeton University Museum of Art. He is co-editor of the journal American Jewish History. Much of his work focuses on the relationship between Jews in America and the British Empire prior to mass eastern European migration, a time when these fledgling communities were beginning to grapple with the challenges of living in liberal societies. While the time-period that he focuses on has remained consistent – the mid-nineteenth century – the themes he has explored have been more varied: economic mobility, cultural production, and religious innovation. His latest project draws on “big data” – a large database of Jewish soldiers who served in the Civil War – to reconsider the experience of Jews during this period.
