With changes to FOIP legislation, the surprise firing of the AIMCO board, a UCP legislative agenda that's entirely about social regression with nothing to address cost of living and a byelection looking in Lethbridge, we figured it was time to sit down for another conversation with Alberta Party leader Lindsay Amantea! It's time for a conversation with new Alberta Party leader, Lindsay Amantea! With more than a few pundits and political scientists making it clear that they believe Alberta is now inexorably a two party state, you have to wonder why the Alberta Party and it's leader believe that they have a place in the political conversation, and we pose exactly that question (and a whole lot more) in this upbeat and humorous conversation! What was the Alberta Party thinking? That's the question that we kick off this episode with after they deployed a clunky AI Avatar in a new video this week. From there we move into the ongoing developments in Justice Minister Tyler Shandros hearing with the Law Society, skyrocketing insurance rates and why the UCP's measures won't make the impact people need, the ongoing health care crisis and Smith's bizarre pivot on Justin Trudeaus "Just Transition". We basically just talk about circus that is Alberta's government Touch on the Alberta Party's irrelevance
A NDP majority was elected in 2015, and then in 2019 enough people voted for the UCP to give them a majority. Elections in different jurisdictions have shown that after each opposite direction election, many voters are left hanging with no home. Recent polls have shown that the UCP is having a hard time keeping voters, but not all are ready to vote NDP, so where do they go? The speaker will contend that at some point, Albertans may become tired of the instability of this back-and-forth undoing what the previous government did, only to have that repeat in the following election. The Alberta Party arguably occupies the center of Alberta politics, which is not far from the sentiment of most Albertans. Speaker: Barry Morishita, leader of the Alberta Party A long serving councilor and Mayor in the City of Brooks, Barry Morishita is well known in municipal government across the province having spent 7 years on the Board and Executive of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association becoming the association's longest serving President. His experiences traveling throughout the Province in this capacity & his passion for building communities earned him the Honorary Lifetime Membership from the AUMA. He retired from municipal politics in 2021 and soon moved into the provincial arena as the Leader of the Alberta Party. Barry is a proud Canadian of Japanese descent, married with two children & two grandchildren living in the City of 100 Hello's, Brooks, Alberta.

Welcome to the Cross Border Interviews With Barry Morishita A proud 3rd generation Japanese Canadian, Barry's paternal great-grandparents' immigrated to Canada in 1913. They, along with his grandmother, spent several years confined to a World War 2 Japanese internment camp in Tashme, B.C., during which time his father was born. Once released, they chose to move to Alberta in 1947 and eventually settled in the Rosemary area. His mother immigrated from England in 1952. His roles on City Council evolved to include leadership positions with the local seniors housing foundation, in regional economic development, and with Canadian Badlands Tourism, among others. In addition to the municipal and Senate candidate elections, two referendum questions were added by the Alberta Government to the 2021 Municipal Elections: (1) Should section 36(2) of the Constitution Act, 1982 – Parliament and the government of Canada's commitment to the principle of making equalization payments – be removed from the constitution? (2) Do you want Alberta to adopt year-round Daylight-Saving Time, which is summer hours, eliminating the need to change our clocks twice a year? The first question can arguably be considered partisan in nature given the rhetoric around equalization provided by the governing UCP party and it may have enabled an altered focus of people running and voting on local issues. Besides that, what did the vote on equalization actually mean? Similarly, the vote for Senate appointments among the 13 candidates running may have been a futile exercise. Lethbridge added two extra questions on their ballot (1) Do you support using a ward system to elect City Councilors (other than the Mayor) starting with the 2025 municipal election? (2) Do you agree that city council should approve plans to construct a 3rd bridge prior to 2030 as a municipal capital project priority? These questions were front and center during election forums and will no doubt be hot items for Lethbridge City Council to wrestle with going forward. Typically, partisan politics play a rather small role in municipal politics & the speaker will recount his extensive experiences and concerns. He will also estimate what the election results could mean for Alberta & speculate on the wisdom of allowing Political Action Committees (PAC's) & more money into municipal politics. Speaker: Barry Morishita A long serving councilor and Mayor in the City of Brooks, Barry Morishita is well known in municipal government across the province having spent 7 years on the Board and Executive of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association becoming the associations longest serving President. Deirdre Mitchell-Maclean is the host of one of a very particular podcast on Alberta politics, but the current format is the result of an evolution over several years. As well, with Deirdre's experience covering politics as both a journalist and a pundit, as well as someone who not only identified as a centrist but also actively volunteered for the only political party in Alberta that openly described itself as centrist, she is uniquely prepared to offer us a glimpse on what the often vaguely defined space on the political spectrum known as centrism is all about in Alberta as well as whether or not the Alberta Party is the only party to occupy that space. In Part 2 of this special two part episode, Deirdre tries to help us nail down what's going on in the middle of the political spectrum. The middle ground in the political spectrum seems to be where a lot of politicians want to be seen to be coming from when they aren't actively appealing to their base. But what does this mean for the future of politics in Alberta? Well that's what we get Deirdre to help us try and figure out! And why does Stephen have so little regard for everybody's time that he'd bother to talk about the Alberta Party? Zain Velji, as always, picks the questions and keeps everybody in line.
Albertans are furious at the tone-deaf, elite, entitled arrogance displayed by Premier Jason Kenney, at least one of his Ministers multiple MLAs, and political staffers who travelled to exotic holiday destinations in the midst of a pandemic. Ryan channels public opinion in an unprecedented nearly-hour-long opening statement. We hear from former Deputy Premier Thomas Lukaszuk, former PC Minister Richard Starke, and former PC MLA Jacquie Fenske (now interim Alberta Party leader) to fact check Premier Kenney's more dubious claims (most notably, that he didn't know Minister Tracey Allard and chief of staff Jamie Huckabay left Canada over the Christmas break). Psychiatrist Dr. Peter Silverstone and registered psychologist Kim Knull bring great advice around dealing with anger, and starting fresh in 2021.
It's our year end panel discussion blow out that's so big, we had to break it up into parts! (PART 2!) We wanted to do a bit of a follow up on the research that the Common Ground Initiative has been producing, so we assembled an expert panel to discuss some of the research, what it means for the future of political parties in Alberta, and a whole lot more! With an panel made up of... -One of the political experts who is involved in Common Ground, political science professor at the University of Alberta, Dr. Feodor Snagovsky (@FSnagovsky) -Journalist, podcaster, and political commentator Deirdre Mitchell-MacLean (@Mitchell_AB) -Journalist and commentator Max Fawcett (@maxfawcett) -Commentator and political organizer Scott Harold Payne (@scottpayne) In part 2 we talk about the Alberta Party's future, whether the NDP are left wing enough for Alberta's left, and what it will take to make more Albertans realize that they're Albertans! As always, if you appreciate the kind of content that we're trying to produce here at The Breakdown, please consider signing up as a monthly supporter at our patreon site at www.patreon.com/thebreakdownab, and if you're listening to the audio version of our podcast, please consider leaving us a review and a rating and don't forget to like and follow us on facebook, twitter and instagram all at @thebreakdownab.
On this extended edition of The Breakdown we take a look at the Teck Frontier mining project, the recent alarming changes to the AISH schedule, catch up on some of the embarrassing recent missteps from the Alberta Party and for our deep dive we sit down with Stoney Nakoda elder Rachel Snow to try and get some better context on the Wet'suwet'en crisis and the state of First Nation relations in Canada. We know that this is a much longer episode than normal, but the interview with Rachel is something that we're all extremely proud of, so we would encourage you to set aside some time and listen, as her perspective is a very important one.
On our first episode of the new year, we have an interview with the current Acting Leader of the Alberta Party, we take a look at the recent news about the Rutherford Scholarship from last summer (hint: it wasn't an IT problem) and we break down the incredible (and it really is incredible) list of missteps of the UCP War Room (the Canadian Energy Centre) and ask the fundamental question, are Albertans getting what they're paying for in the War Room or is this the UCP version of the Redford Sky Palace? We also officially are launching our patreon account! It turns out that travelling to Edmonton, equipment and renting spaces costs money, so please visit https://www.patreon.com/Thebreakdownab and help us keep doing whatever it is that we're doing here!
For March 10, 2019.... Catholic Watch.... Cardinal Pell makes prison his new home after he was found guilty on all 5 charges laid against him in the sexual abuse of two choir boys 22 years ago. Not to be outdone, the archbishop of Lyon, Cardinal Philippe Barbarin, was found guilty for failing to report allegations of sexual abuse. Police in Costa Rica raid the offices of the Archdiocese of San José and the Costa Rican bishops' conference as part of their investigation of two predatory priests. But Pope Francis remains undaunted and steadfast, finding that silver lining, saying that the revelations of sexual abuse is purifying the Church! Meanwhile, in Argentina with Catholic tendrils infiltrating its laws forces an 11-year old girl to carry to term a pregnancy resulting from rape. Quack Tract Quebec-based homeopathy 'aid' organization Terre Sans Frontières has been receiving moneys from Global Affairs Canada to push their Chagas' placebo treatment on Hondurans. After this was exposed by CBC journalist Vik Adhopia, doctors questioned this policy and successfully lobbied to end funding. The Alberta Party has announced mandatory vaccinations as part of their policy platform for the upcoming election. The Regressive Left Files New Zealand is the latest to repeal blasphemy laws. White oppressor and physician Deborah Cohan prostrates herself at the altar of social justice in a self-flagellating piece of garbage in - of all places! - the NEJM.
