New York and New Jersey investigate allegations that FIFA is misleading soccer fans -- and unfairly inflating World Cup ticket prices.A year ago, the arrest of an anti-corruption lawyer prompted dozens of journalists and democracy advocates to flee El Salvador. Now, that lawyer's husband says he can no longer stay silent. For more than a century, Saskatchewan's Legislature has had a well-appointed private bathroom for male law-makers. But female MLAs won't have their own updated loo until sometime next month. Ep 596 - Conservative Party of BC Leadership Candidate Peter Milobar By Stuart McNish   He is one of four sitting MLAs running for the leadership of the Conservative Party of BC: Peter Milobar was first elected to the legislature in 2017 as a BC Liberal in the Kamloops-North Thompson riding and is the current Finance Critic for the BC Conservatives. Prior to running provincially, Milobar was a councillor for two terms in Kamloops before winning and sitting as mayor for nine years, from 2008 to 2017.   In an interview with Rob Shaw, Milobar said, “I have a demonstrated skill set to deal with diverse views around a large board of elected officials. And then I know how to interstitch all of that with a government bureaucracy. So I think that very much sets me up well for the challenges facing British Columbia.”   As he enters the race, 10 people have indicated they want the job. Milobar says, “I bring a level of seriousness to the big issues facing BC. The biggest being the economy and its direct impact on affordability, crime, education and real estate.” As well, Milobar says, “I am uniquely qualified to address reconciliation in BC, and the manner in which Premier Eby and his party are addressing it, is counterproductive.”   We invited Conservative Party of BC leadership candidate Peter Milobar to join us for a Conversation That Matters about his vision for the party and the province.   You can see the interview here https://www.conversationsthatmatter.ca/ Learn More about our guests career at careersthatmatter.ca

The global chair of United Way Worldwide explains how he's watched his province's health care, education, and public safety systems gradually eroded over three decades. Fulmer advocates growing the economy through more natural resource development, addressing the province's record $13.3 billion dollar deficit through efficiency rather than cuts, and protecting property rights amid concerns around Indigenous land title decisions. He insists he would be a leader who would allow his MLAs to speak freely, while maintaining discipline amongst a fractured conservative movement. E146: Busayo Disu thinks the society has to meet the immigrants halfway

The Newcomers Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 27, 2026 68:56

In today's episode, I'm speaking with Busayo Disu, a pharmacist turned intercultural communication advocate who moved from Nigeria to Sherwood Park, Alberta in 2019. Since that time, she's launched the African Society of Strathcona County, written a children's book called Our Story, Our Voice, produced a documentary of the same name, and is organizing community dialogues between policymakers and immigrant families. This was one of those conversations where we got into it, albeit productively and respectfully. So here's the gist. Busayo's position on integration is the environment, its leadership, and its organizations have to create the conditions for integration. Without that, she says, any individual effort by the immigrants just generates unnecessary conflict. While I agree that society plays a part, I also think the immigrant needs to do the work of nudging society along to create those conditions. Healthy conflict is the way the world changes. This was a fun one. ----------Busayo and I also chat about:How she's building community dialogues between policymakers and immigrant familiesHow her children's struggles pushed her into community buildingWhat Canadians can do to welcome newcomersWhy she thinks immigrant parents need to get involved in building the society their kids are going to grow up in----------Dozie's NotesA few things that struck me as I listened through this week's conversation:The gap between policy and practice is where immigrants get lost in the workplace. Organizations will say they have a diversity and inclusion policy. But what are the actual steps? How is feedback received across cultural lines? Are there strategies for intercultural communication, or just a document filed away somewhere?"Passionate" can be a compliment or a code word, and the difference depends entirely on who's saying it. Busayo went to multiple job interviews where interviewers told her she was "so passionate." She later found out that it was polite Canadian for "you're too much." In Nigeria, it's okay to be passionate and direct. In a Canadian professional setting, it can be seen as aggression. This is one of those invisible cultural translation problems that no settlement guide covers. I think the fix is for both sides to understand that communication styles are culturally coded, and different doesn't mean wrong.Integration requires infrastructure that most communities don't have yet. And we immigrants need to do the work of building that connective tissue. Don't wait, stretch out your hand and kick off the conversation. Sometimes you'll get a handshake, sometimes you won't. And that's okay. The most effective immigrant advocates I've spoken to on this podcast don't wait for permission. Busayo got county funding for her book. She got the mayor to write the foreword. She got it into schools by aligning it with the Alberta curriculum. She's organizing a community dialogue in the council chambers with policymakers, MLAs, school principals, and religious leaders. She's the first Black member of the library board. All these happened because she showed up and made the case. That's how societies change. ----------Official Links✅ Connect with Busayo Disu on LinkedIn✅ The Avid Readers of Africa websiteOne AskIf you found this story helpful, please consider sharing it with one immigrant you know.

Raw Talks With Vamshi Kurapati - Telugu Business Podcast

In this Telugu podcast episode, Prof. K. Nageshwar Rao, senior journalist, political analyst, and former MLC, shares rare insights from a career that spans journalism, politics, academia, and legislative responsibility. From witnessing India's media evolution since the early days of Doordarshan and The Indian Express to being part of the first 24-hour Telugu news ecosystem with TV9, he reflects on how news, narratives, and political theatre have reshaped public discourse. The conversation explores how parliamentary discussions should ideally function, the gap between democratic intent and political drama, and why voters today are often ill-informed or misinformed, echoing Jayaprakash Narayan's warning from 1997. Prof. Nageshwar breaks down the deep nexus between media, business, and politics, the systematic delegitimisation of independent journalists, and why intellectual debate has been replaced by noise-driven television formats. Drawing from ancient references like Krishna, Sita, and Buddha, he places modern democracy in a broader civilisational context. He speaks candidly about money in politics, daily expenses of MLAs and MPs, manifesto design, welfare schemes like Dalit Bandhu, and how policies are crafted more for optics than outcomes. The discussion covers voter responsibility, opposition as a democratic asset, warning signals of institutional collapse, and why a healthy opposition and free media are essential checks on unlimited power.Prof. Nageshwar also reflects on student politics, Osmania University, the limits of funding without intellectual leadership, and how some of India's finest leaders emerged from campus movements. He shares personal experiences from the time of Indira Gandhi's assassination, his transition from journalism to politics, his eight years as an MLC, achievements, regrets, and the challenge of staying intellectually honest in public life. The episode touches on threats, ideological labelling, public perception, media pressure, AI in journalism, currency performance, global awareness, and the discipline required to stay informed. With calm reasoning and sharp clarity, he explains why neutrality is not the absence of values, but the courage to speak truth without fear.If you are interested in Telugu politics, Indian democracy, journalism ethics, media influence, voter awareness, student politics, and political analysis without theatrics, this conversation offers depth, context, and perspective that cuts through the chaos.

The role of the Assembly and ExecutiveIf we were to listen to and accept at face value those in the media who criticise the Assembly and the Executive as ineffective, and who question their value or use, we would mothball both institutions and sack the MLAs.Yes, there is justifiable frustration at the failure of the institutions to address concerns on health and education and delivery on Casement Park, Saving Lough Neagh, building the A5, delivering for Gaeilgeoirí, tackling poverty and hate crimes and legacy issues alongside problems in our public services. But that is not the fault of the institutions. It lies with the political parties and others who are blocking progress.Yes, there are problems but it is wrong to tar all our politicians with the one brush and it would also be wrong to hand over responsibility for these issues to unelected civil servants and to the British government. That would be irresponsible and stupid.Does anyone really want another British Secretary of State running this place? There have been 25 British Secretaries of State, mostly mediocre and forgettable, including some who contributed enormously to the conflict. We also need to appreciate that the London government is adding to the difficulties faced by an Executive which doesn't have the financial resources to tackle some of the issues of greatest concern. All of this is an argument for the end of Westminster rule. We need to say that loudly and often. London has never ruled us in our best interests. We who call this place home are the only ones entitled or fit to do that. That includes our unionist neighbours and their representatives. The reality is that the Northern statelet was not and is not a normal society.  Partition was a unionist and British imposed response to the demand by the people of this island to independence and sovereignty. The unionist regime at Stormont immediately and successfully deepened political and sectarian discrimination and the inequalities that were part and parcel of colonisation. The Northern state was a place where non-unionists were to have no say in its running and where the institutions of the state were closed to us. After 78 years of ‘Northern Ireland' the Good Friday Agreement began a process of fundamentally changing that system. It is a process. The Agreement was and is a unique arrangement to facilitate conflicting political visions. Republicans decided to enter Stormont – a place that represented all that was wrong with the Orange State – because we believed that a space was needed in which we and unionism could moderate our differences. Other venues were considered but we believed that unionists would be comfortable within the Stormont setting. And we opted for that. However, did anyone seriously think that generations and centuries of colonisation and prejudice could be overturned quickly? That the deep rooted antipathy to all things progressive or rights based, never mind nationalist or republican, would disappear overnight or even in the short term?  Only the most naive or stupid among us would have thought the British State would acknowledge its wrong doing and embrace equality and democracy?  No dear readers.  It was always going to be a battle a day- a process that demanded and demands perseverance, doggedness, generosity, resolve and strategic focus. Especially strategic focus.Cearta Anios. In May 2022, 20,000 activists took to the streets of Béal Feirste to demand Irish language rights. This An Dream Dearg mass mobilisation of both young and old was highly symbolic, positive, cheerful and confident. Four days after this protest, the British government took the first step to introduce Irish-language legislation, paving the way for historic social change in the Northern state. This legislation provided for the repeal of the centuries old  penal-law ban on the use of I

The BJP's central leadership is expected to take time in finalizing a consensus candidate. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has asked Singh to remain in office until alternative arrangements are made.
