Whole grain is flavour. Tommy Aird of Tommy's Wholegrain Bakery in East Vancouver has dedicated his business to the pursuit of flavour in bread and pastry through the use of wholegrain wheat. He accomplishes this by buying the highest quality organic wheat berries from farms here in BC and milling his own flour. By controlling the whole baking process he and his team can hone done on making some of the delicious baked good I have ever eaten. The flour brings a massive amount of flavour, nutrition and craftsmanship to everything on offer in the bakery.  His passion for wholegrain is infectious and the "why" is the most important part. In this episode, my guest Sara Aird of @breakingdowncptsd and I unpack the lyrics to “My Tears Ricochet” from Taylor Swift's album, Folklore. We discuss our interpretations of the song through the lens of what it's like to walk away from a toxic or abusive family system. Some topics we cover are the duality of loving people but knowing you need to walk away from them, feeling misunderstood for making boundaries, and creating your own home base.Content note: suicidal ideation is mentioned briefly around the 12-minute mark, in addition to discussions of abuse (non graphic) throughout. On today's show, Wesley Aird discusses the Indigenous Voice. GUEST 1 OVERVIEW: John Ruddick grew up in Tamworth and then spent two years working on an outback farm. From 1991 to 1995 he studied history at the University of Sydney and then commenced as a staffer for Ross Cameron MP in the early days of the Howard Government. He had been an active member of the NSW Liberal Party and championed democratic reform of that party. In 2018 he published "Make the Liberal Party Great Again" which was a blueprint on how to optimally democratise an Australian political party in the 21st century. In mid-2021 he joined the Liberal Democrats after his disappointment with the Morrison and Berejiklian governments and their over-reaction to COVID-19 and the associated government debt. John has written op-eds for most of Australia's leading newspapers and has appeared frequently on Sky News and occasionally on ABC. John and his wife run a mortgage broking business. GUEST 2 OVERVIEW: Wesley Aird is from the Gold Coast Aboriginal community. He has worked in Indigenous affairs for over 25 years following ten years in the Army during which he was the first Indigenous graduate from the Royal Military College, Duntroon. His experiences in native title are his inspiration for honesty in cultural identification, and his experiences in the resources sector impressed on him the life-changing benefits of education, training and employment.

Lashrecse Aird was the youngest woman ever elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, lessons learned through the adversity of childhood informed Lashrecse Aird's legislative career. During her tenure in the House (2016-2022), Lashrecse Aird earned a reputation as a courageous and champion for social, racial, economic and environmental justice issues. Lashrecse Aird helped Virginia make history with the passage of Breonna's Law, prohibiting the use of no-knock search warrants. Her legislation also led Virginia to become the first southern state to declare racism a public health crisis, to declare access to water a human right, and to impose a ban on the use of facial recognition technology. Lashrecse was also a staunch advocate in securing the state's first certification and reimbursement policy for doulas, to combat maternal and infant mortality. Lashrecse is currently seeking the Democratic Nomination in Virginia's Senate District 13 against current Senator Joseph Morrissey. Get out and cast your vote on 6/20/2023.

Let's face it. When we are undergoing a spiritual awakening, transformation or personal discovery path of any kind, it's not something that is always filled with flowers, dreamy meditations and heart-swelling moments of newness and innate confidence. It can in fact be a time that is dark, challenging and filled with stress. And I could not think of anyone more amazing to speak to our spiritual journeys and the role that stress may play in those than my guest today Karen Aird. Karen runs an incredibly successful wellness centre and has developed a signature method for supporting people to work with stress in their lives - which is something of course we all experience in varying ways. I hope you love this episode ahead. Something tells me that the practical support within it is going to be so helpful for you.
