Simon and Manny deliver the definitive Chelsea season preview, packed with bold takes, honest predictions, and the kind of unfiltered analysis that only Chelsea Against The World brings. After a summer of upheaval, a new manager, record spending and genuine optimism, it is finally time to put predictions on the record. The hosts open with a review of Chelsea's final pre-season outing — a convincing 3-1 win over Real Sociedad that offered genuine encouragement about where Xabi Alonso has this squad heading into the opening weekend. The shape looked better, the intensity was there, and for the first time this summer Chelsea looked like a team with a clear identity rather than a collection of expensive parts. Then the transfer talk that refuses to go away. Pedro Neto has been heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and the Enzo Fernandez saga rumbles on with no resolution in sight. Simon and Manny break down both situations, assess what each departure or retention would mean for Alonso's plans, and give their honest predictions on how it all ends before the window slams shut. And then the main event — the predictions. Where do Chelsea finish? What is realistic in the cups? Who wins the Premier League? Who goes down? Golden Boot? First manager sacked? Preseason is over, Xabi Alonso's Bridge debut is this weekend, and somehow Chelsea are already a trophy up for the season. We name a standout, a disappointment, and admit we're more excited than we've been in years.Neither of us watched much of this preseason — that's the honest opener — but there was enough to draw conclusions from, and with Real Sociedad at the Bridge this weekend closing it out, we figured it was time to hand out awards. Real talk up front: Jason doesn't put much stock in preseason as a rule, and this year reinforced why. A “lock” (defensive player) got fouled heavily out there and it soured the whole exercise for him — friendlies should stay friendly. But even with the caveats, both of us walked away more optimistic about a Chelsea season than we've been in years. What Did We Actually Learn? Not as much as you'd hope. Morgan Rogers didn't feature at all before this week. Reece James didn't play a single preseason minute. Lacroix didn't play. Enzo's future is still unresolved. That's three, potentially four starters who never touched the pitch together, which means our attacking three of Rogers, Palmer, and João Pedro built zero preseason chemistry, and nobody has any real idea where Reece is even going to line up. The lineup against Johor Darul Ta'zim was about as academy-heavy as it gets — Sharman-Lowe in goal, a back three of Subuloye, Tosin, and Anselmino, Quenda and Gittens out wide, Essugo captaining a midfield with Nicoll-Jazuli, Estêvão in the hole, Jackson and Delap up top — and an almost unused bench because half the squad had already been sent home or was running on fumes from the match before. Coming out of it, we probably have as many questions as we went in with. Where does Reece play? Who does Lacroix actually replace? What happens to Quenda's minutes with Rogers, Neto, and Mudryk all wanting the same spots? The Squad Bloat Problem, AgainStill 45-ish players on the senior list, with Xabi reportedly wanting it down to 25. The transfer window closes September 1st at 6pm American time — three weeks from the recording date — and Chelsea still haven't moved Disasi, Badiashile, Tosin, Anselmino, Jackson, or Delap, plus Guiu still hanging around. People keep saying Chelsea are clearing deadwood. They aren't — a handful of academy loans doesn't count, and nobody wants to buy the players actually clogging the roster, because BlueCo overpriced them the first time around. The Athletic reported that some in the traveling party felt Xabi was running an A-team and B-team in preseason and that the B-team players sensed they weren't in his plans. Chelsea deny a formal two-tier system, but honestly — of course there's a pecking order forming. That's what a proper preseason is for. Some of you just aren't going to play. Fight for your spot.Standout of the Preseason: Marco PalestraUnanimous, and it isn't close. “Pastrami” was the best player in every match either of us caught — tireless, strong defensively, dangerous going forward, constantly getting up and down the right. He played right wing-back for Rúben Amorim at Sporting, so the position switch isn't new to him at all, and BlueCo, credit where due, got this signing right. Reigning Serie A Defender of the Season, and it showed. Other shoutouts: João Pedro for continuing exactly what he started last summer, Estêvão for looking the part again, Geovany Quenda for justifying a year of hype on this podcast alone, and Roméo Lavia — who, after three years at the club, finally completed a full 90 minutes. That's not a joke entry. That's the actual highlight some fans are pointing to.Worst of the Preseason: Tosin, Running Away With ItSome of the worst defending either of us has seen from a Chelsea player, full stop. We floated the theory that Tosin's entire remaining employment is a Cole Palmer loyalty play — Palmer goes to bat for his buddy, the club humors it, and now that Palmer has a new bestie in Morgan Rogers, maybe that's finally the door closing on Tosin. He's reportedly linked to Benfica, but the honest read is nobody sane pays real money for him — just cut the contract, since he cost nothing and there's no amortization to lose, and let him walk. Nico Jackson gets an honorable dishonorable mention: flashes of what he can do, still can't finish, and his framing in this Xabi system is genuinely unclear — a start-caliber player who might have to accept a bench role, when Chelsea might honestly rather have 35-year-old Danny Welbeck as the actual impact sub, because Welbeck finishes and Jackson doesn't. Also worth noting: Jackson volunteered to be subbed off early against Johor Darul Ta'zim specifically so Mudryk could get on the pitch before full time — genuinely selfless, and worth the shoutout on its own.Mudryk's Back, and So Is Austin MacPhee's TemperWe may have buried the lede on this one: Mudryk's actual return to a matchday shirt might have been the highlight of the whole preseason, full stop. And separately — Austin MacPhee, our set-piece coach and the man this podcast was talking up two weeks before anyone else noticed him, got caught on video screaming at a Johor Darul Ta'zim staffer to shut up after a nasty tackle on Liam Delap, to the point that Xabi Alonso had to physically pull him away. We'll take it. The man cares, and we're already crediting him for some genuinely sharp set-piece goals this preseason. We Also, Somehow, Won a TrophyBeating AC Milan came with the Indonesian Super Cup attached, which neither of us knew was on the line until the broadcast mentioned it mid-match. So: Xabi Alonso has technically already won a trophy at Chelsea. We're not rating it anywhere near a Community Shield or a UEFA Super Cup, let alone anything that matters, but you don't turn down a trophy. Put it in the cabinet and don't ask questions. Meanwhile Arsenal are probably about to win the actual Community Shield and spend the next several weeks reminding everyone about it — after a genuinely bad end to last season that this podcast watched in real time. Enjoy it while you can; Anthony Taylor isn't walking through that door to bail you out this year.Where This Leaves UsGenuinely more optimistic than last year, and for a specific reason: this is the first summer in the BlueCo era where our best players got proper rest. Cole Palmer and João Pedro skipped the World Cup and had a full offseason, unlike last year's fitness-compromised group. Reece James played 29 games and came out the other side of the World Cup okay, minus a one-match absence for a minor procedure. Jason's officially predicting a top-four finish this year — he didn't predict that last season — and thinks there's a real shot at silverware, while also, in the same breath, floating that Chelsea could bow out in the second round of the EFL Cup. Both things can be true. It's the first season in five years either of us has actually been excited about, and we're trying not to let that scare us.What's ComingSeason five of the podcast kicks off properly Monday with the official predictions episode. New for this season: a weekly Premier League predictions show (working title: Ten Wrongs in a Row), Thursday transfer coverage continuing until the window shuts and then pivoting to a looser Thursday live format, and the return of the Wheel — likely as a recurring “Us vs. The Wheel” segment letting a spin call one match's outcome a week. Suggestions for the shows are welcome in the comments. This is a public episode. Lose On Purpose: Our Big-Brain Plan to Get Chelsea a New Goalkeeper

Red, White & Blues FC | 4:45 AM Football, a Set-Piece Guru, and a Plan to Get a New GoalkeeperChelsea are in Sydney, we are not waking up for it, and Xabi Alonso just gave us a reason to root against our own back line.Preseason is here, which means Chelsea are on the other side of the planet playing Western Sydney Wanderers at 4:45 in the morning our time. We open by loudly committing to live stream it and then immediately un-committing, which tells you most of what you need to know about how much stock we put in the Sydney Super Cup. But underneath the jokes there's actually a bit of optimism creeping in this year — a training session that looked like real coaching, a new set-piece coach who might be the best in the business, and a manager saying things a manager is supposed to say. Then there's the goalkeeper situation, where we land on a plan so stupid it might work.Australia at 4:45 AM, and Why We're Even ThereThe tour is Sydney (Western Sydney Wanderers, then Tottenham), Hong Kong, Jakarta, and Malaysia, with Juventus and AC Milan in there too, a Real Sociedad friendly at Stamford Bridge on August 15, and then the season opener away at Fulham because we are apparently never allowed a home opener. Jason's read: this is a cash grab with terrible timing, and if BlueCo would just sell the front of the shirt — four years running now — maybe we wouldn't need to be chasing the Australian and Southeast Asian markets at dawn. Daniel's more forgiving: let the boys go on tour, do some PR, build rapport with a new manager. We check the weather in all four cities like the professionals we are. We also agree that a Tottenham derby in Sydney is not a derby, because nobody out there is going to hate anybody properly.Preseason Expectations: Please Just Don't Get HurtJason's forecast is bleak and specific — one to five players will get injured, they'll be pivotal, and the transfer strategy hasn't accounted for it, because it never does. Daniel finds the silver lining: minutes for the academy lads, Levi Colwill getting his legs back, Cole Palmer maybe getting going, and Estêvão on the pitch. We're missing Caicedo, possibly Enzo, Reece James, Morgan Rogers, and Geovany Quenda, which limits what anyone can actually learn. The bar is simple: don't lose to Western Sydney Wanderers, don't lose to the side in Jakarta. Lose to Tottenham, Juventus, or Milan and fine, we're learning a new system. And if there is one prayer we're saying out loud, it's that Estêvão comes home in one piece.Austin MacPhee Is Here and He's a Glorious BastardThe genuine highlight. Chelsea have hired Austin MacPhee from Aston Villa, the Scottish set-piece specialist who also works with the Portugal national team, whose Villa side outscored every club in Europe's top five leagues from set pieces in 23/24 and finished joint-top with Arsenal in the Premier League last season — the difference being Arsenal shat their way to it and MacPhee does it properly. If this podcast has one recurring complaint over four years, it's Chelsea set pieces. We once lost our minds over a short corner under Pochettino. Hiring an actual set-piece guru, rather than another motivational coach imported to install a “winning mentality,” is the single clearest sign that somebody at the club is taking this seriously. Daniel is now on a mission to find MacPhee's Twitter, ask him his favorite scotch, and get him on the show. Austin, if you're listening: there's also Miller Lite, and you look like a Miller Lite guy.The Goalkeeper Plan (Root Against Your Own Defense)Xabi Alonso has said everything is open, every position, and per Ben Jacobs on the CFC Hub he's asked the club for time to assess the keepers in preseason before making a recommendation. Which leads Daniel to the big-brain question: shouldn't we then want to ship a load of goals in Australia? Jason is fully on board — a preseason loss tells you nothing about the club, but it tells you plenty about the goalkeeper. So, Levi and Josh, do us a solid and let a few in. Underneath the bit is a real argument we go back and forth on. Robert Sánchez is a genuinely excellent shot-stopper — 95 saves, nine clean sheets, statistically a better shot-stopper than Mike Maignan, in a harder league — and the 47 goals conceded says as much about Wesley Fofana's pace, Tosin's one-v-one defending, and Mamadou Sarr as it does about him. But he can't distribute, he can't play with his feet, and every manager keeps asking him to do exactly that. There's a £60m keeper with a release clause sitting there in Diogo Costa who does both. Pay it, keep Penders, and let us stop holding our breath every time the ball rolls back.Estêvão vs. Yamal, and the Photo We Refuse to BelieveWe close on the good stuff. Alonso on Estêvão: “plays with the confidence of someone who's been in Europe for years — age means nothing when the talent is that special.” We both think this is his breakout year and the hype only grows. Jason rates him above Lamine Yamal for one reason: humility. The only off-pitch photos of Estêvão are of him in church; Yamal's are from the club. Not a moral judgment, just a pattern — Messi didn't live that way, Ronaldo didn't live that way, and Daniel's comparison point is Neymar, all that talent shadowed by off-pitch noise and injuries. And speaking of Messi, we are not letting go of the bathtub photo. Why did nobody see that image until the World Cup? We're calling AI, we're calling gaslight, and we're calling for a whole midweek episode of football conspiracy theories where we take turns dragging each other down the rabbit hole. Ryan desperately wanted to do three hours on the Copa del Rey final, which he was at, so there will be a Patreon show on Wednesday all about Real Sociedad's first trophy in front of fans since 1987.However, Manchester City beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Etihad on Sunday, so he and Musa focus their attention there for much of today's show. There's chat about what was a wonderful game, where both sides could feel lucky and unlucky on certain refereeing decisions, as well as lucky and unlucky on how certain chances fell. There were obvious positives for Manchester City, who closed the gap to three points and who can go top if they beat Burnley this week. But, despite the understandable disappointment, there were many positives to take for Arsenal, who will be frustrated about not stealing a point at the end. After that, there's some round-ups and shout outs for the rest of the Premier League, plus Bayern winning the Bundesliga and more! For more podcasts, ad-free and in full, plus access to the Stadio Social Club and much more, you can become a Stadio member by signing up at patreon.com/stadio.
