Où sont passées nos années 80 ? (Episode 2 : The Fine Young Cannibals)

A not great joke about losing brain cells, a car getting totaled, the late, lamented Hyundai Veloster, the stupidity of ethical nonmonogamy, a couple songs about dreaming, the tragedies of John Belushi and Chris Farley, a couple great parts from Animal House, a bad attempt at an Eminem song, the amazingly witty and just great person Craig Bierko, the creepiness of people hovering on the ceiling, Los Angeles is my friend and Sunnyvale is my enemy, and a great catchy as hell Britney Spears song. Stuff mentioned: Jim Morrison and The Doors "A Feast of Friends" (1978), Sugar File Under: Easy Listening (1994), The Minus Man (1999), The Moody Blues "Your Wildest Dreams" (1986), Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark "Dreaming" (1988), The Alan Parsons Project "Don't Answer Me" (1984), The Alan Parsons Project "Ammonia Avenue" (1984), Neighbors (1981), Continental Divide (1984), Animal House (1978), Eminem "Til I Collapse" (2020), Scary Movie 4 (2006), Scary Movie 3 (2003), The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996), The Thirteenth Floor (1999), Frank Lloyd Wright Ennis House (2655 Glendower Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90027), Frank Lloyd Wright Hollyhock House (4800 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90027), Brightburn (2019), Hereditary (2018), MOCA Grand (250 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90012), Dear John's (11208 Culver Blvd, Culver City, CA 90230), Book Soup (8818 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069), and Britney Spears "Baby One More Time" (1999).

In this episode, I speak with Andy McCluskey, lead vocalist of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, or OMD, as they are more commonly known. Andy formed OMD with co-writer and occasional co-vocalist, Paul Humphreys, at the tail-end of the 1970s. Their self-titled debut album (and its follow-up) was released in 1980 at the dawn of electronic pop, just as synthesised sounds were easing their way into the mainstream - and this is where our story begins. We begin by looking back at Andy's interests in art and design that saw him creating the first posters for OMD (see below), his ongoing creative relationship with legendary sleeve designer, Peter Saville, and follow the story right up to today with the brand new album, Bauhaus Staircase, released the same day as this podcast - Friday 27 October 2023. The new album references the Bauhaus art movement in its title, and its sleeve design is naturally complementary, but it is not the first OMD album with connections to art and design. So, join Andy and myself as we connect the dots, and along the way reveal that during this journey of more than four decades, OMD may actually have sailed those seven seas and finally come full circle... If you liked this episode, you may also enjoy the conversation I had with John Petch about his design work for OMD's 13th album 'The Punishment of Luxury'. Check out episode 6 of Art on your sleeve. In the 70s, the teenage years of Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys, one would have heard new music by word of mouth, from the music papers, and DJs like John Peel, and it is one of these channels that would have led the young Andy McCluskey in September 1975 to see Kraftwerk play at the Liverpool Empire. It's lazy to suggest that Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark were entirely influenced by Kraftwerk – both founder members were keen music lovers and had performed together in a band called The Id – but their debut single Electricity wears that influence  on its sleeve. There were some classic synthpop albums released in in 1980 and 1981 but in terms of maturity and sophistication, none came close to ‘Architecture and Morality', OMD's third album. McCluskey & Humphreys always did things there own way: "We kind of did songwriting in reverse. A lot of songwriters sit at the piano and hash out a melody and the chords first. With us, we start with a soundscape and crazy noises and quite often the song will land on top. We then realised we had a knack for a catchy tune".   OMD arguably took a wrong turn with their fourth album 'Dazzle Ships', released in 1983."We forgot to sugar coat the experiment. The album shipped Gold and returned Platinum, more copies were sent back than sold. It did scare us that it wasn't commercially successful. Even though our songs always start as experiments, we were conscious to keep it more commercial in order to rescue our career".  But even that record became a classic, eventually. Some 33 years on, in 2016, OMD played a triumphant show at London's Royal Albert Hall performing both Architecture and Morality and then Dazzle Ships back-to-back. That experience gave the band a new lease of life. 2017's ‘The Punishment Of Luxury' can arguably be confidently placed in the top three albums OMD had released to date. Almost forty years after they first got together, a band that was still adding to its finest work. The band's forthcoming album, ‘Bauhaus Staircase' bodes well for their late blooming fifth decade and extended longevity. This, despite McCluskey's wisdom suggesting otherwise.  "It's usually dangerous and stupid to make a new album unless you are really going to invest in it. People tell us we're iconic and influential, so we don't want to fuck it up by making a shit album".The band can rest easy. After 45 years working in their own unique way, they and their fans find OMD on a roll. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

When it comes to Vince Clarke, we just can't get enough (was that too obvious?).  So "don't go" anywhere (how 'bout that one?)! Born Vincent John Martin on July 3, 1960 in South Woodford, Essex, England, Vince Clarke is a classically trained musician who got the bug to make electronic music after hearing Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark in the late ‘70s, which led to the formation of a band with school chum Andy Fletcher called No Romance In China.  Shortly after, the duo added Martin Gore to the mix and called themselves Composition of Sound.  With the addition of lead vocalist Dave Gahan, Composition of Sound morphed into Depeche Mode.  Following the first Depeche Mode album Speak & Spell, Clarke teamed up with Alison Moyet for Yazoo, releasing two huge albums and a string of singles that hovered near the top of the charts. After Yaz, Clarke took up various production duties and projects, most notably The Assembly, before landing upon his most formidable partnership with Andy Bell in Erasure - an alliance that has resulted in 19 studio albums to date, including 5 that have hit #1 in the UK, and some of the most beloved singles of the past nearly 40 years.  That's only scratching the surface, of course, but let's just put it this way…he is an electronic music pioneer, a synth-pop legend, someone who helped to expand the definition of what a rock star looks like and sounds like.  Because some might say that we have trouble at times sticking to the topic at hand, we also cover the newly minted adult in Uncle Gregg's house (hint: it's not him), intimacy issues, a genius (question mark?) way to save the planet, jorts, hot knees, and cuddles.  Lots o' cuddles.  And what does Hollywood legend Jamie Kennedy have to do with Vince Clarke?  We're not sure either. One thing's for certain...we will NOT be calling ourselves Only Three Lads US! Awww yeah! Our O3L Spotlight Artist of the Week is UK garage rock trio The Len Price 3, whose 2007 debut album is being reissued on April 7th by Little Steven's Wicked Cool Records.  The record will be available on vinyl for the first time, and also contains four unreleased bonus tracks on CD and digital.  We are thrilled to play one of those unreleased tracks, the incendiary "Break Your Neck" on this week's episode.
