fWotD Episode 2660: Snooker Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 16 August 2024 is Snooker.Snooker (pronounced UK: SNOO-kər, US: SNUUK-ər) is a cue sport played on a rectangular billiards table covered with a green cloth called baize, with six pockets: one at each corner and one in the middle of each long side. First played by British Army officers stationed in India in the second half of the 19th century, the game is played with twenty-two balls, comprising a white cue ball, fifteen red balls and six other balls—a yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black—collectively called 'the colours'. Using a snooker cue, the individual players or teams take turns to strike the cue ball to pot other balls in a predefined sequence, accumulating points for each successful pot and for each foul committed by the opposing player or team. An individual frame of snooker is won by the player who has scored the most points, and a snooker match ends when a player reaches a predetermined number of frames. In 1875, army officer Neville Chamberlain, stationed in India, devised a set of rules that combined black pool and pyramids. The word snooker was a well-established derogatory term used to describe inexperienced or first-year military personnel. In the early 20th century, snooker was predominantly played in the United Kingdom, where it was considered a "gentleman's sport" until the early 1960s before growing in popularity as a national pastime and eventually spreading overseas. The standard rules of the game were first established in 1919 when the Billiards Association and Control Club was formed. As a professional sport, snooker is now governed by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association. The World Snooker Championship first took place in 1927, and Joe Davis—a key figure and pioneer in the early growth of the sport—won fifteen successive world championships between 1927 and 1946. The "modern era" of snooker began in 1969 after the broadcaster BBC commissioned the television series Pot Black, later airing daily coverage of the World Championship which was first televised in 1978. The most prominent players of the modern era are Ray Reardon (1970s), Steve Davis (1980s) and Stephen Hendry (1990s), each winning at least six world titles. Since 2000, Ronnie O'Sullivan has won the World Championship seven times, most recently in 2022. Top professional players compete in regular tournaments around the world, earning millions of pounds on the World Snooker Tour—a circuit of international events featuring competitors of many different nationalities. The World Championship, the UK Championship and the Masters together make up the Triple Crown Series and are considered by many players to be the most highly valued titles. The main professional tour is open to both male and female players, and there is a separate women's tour organised by World Women's Snooker. Competitive snooker is also available to non-professional players, including seniors and people with disabilities. The popularity of snooker has led to the creation of many variations based on the standard game but with different rules or equipment, including six-red snooker, the short-lived "snooker plus" and the more recent Snooker Shoot Out version. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:02 UTC on Friday, 16 August 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Snooker on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Matthew.

Rob revisits his conversation with snooker legend Ronnie O'Sullivan to bring you the best bits including how Ronnie has managed to overcome many personal struggles and how he became one of the greatest snooker players of all time. Ronnie Reveals His struggles with addiction How to surround yourself with the right people How Buddhism helped him Ronnie's past self-sabotaging behaviours How to learn valuable lessons from others The greatest lesson he has ever learnt The best snooker player in the world BEST MOMENTS "Nobody's perfect, but I just think having that person that's just behind you and you know they're behind you." "Buddhism was a good one for me because it allowed me to just try and find that contentment without handing my life over to this higher power." "If you just break it down into pure skill, tenacity, temperament, I'd say Higgins and Hendry have got a much better temperament than me." "I think a lot of the snooker fans that don't really know the intricacies of the game would probably all say me. But then if you get people that really know the game, they would probably either say me, Hendry or Higgins." "I wouldn't have chosen snooker. That was another mistake. My own kids, I was like, you're not playing snooker. I said, if you decide to play snooker, you're on your own." "Stephen Hendry taught me so much. Not like sit down and talk. I observed. You know, he wasn't going to give me that privilege to kind of educate me. So for me, it was like, this is the greatest snooker player there's ever been. I just have to watch, observe." "I have to put in the hard graft, I have to do a lot of the stuff and it's good that I think other snooker players recognise that and kind of respect you more for that side than just your talent." "Anyone can play well for three rounds of golf. When it comes to the final round, you've got to do it. A lot of them bail out, you know what I mean? And that's the difference between great champions that win a lot and people that still win but don't." He said: "It's obviously a big ask for me to win the World Championship but if I can keep my game and my mental strength improving then I can do some real damage. Every day I talk to the kid I was in the 1970s and say 'you're not done yet.' If I don't win another tournament, then it won't be for not trying." White also looks back on his run of six World Championship final defeats in the 1990s and names his worst moment as the 1992 final against Stephen Hendry when he led 14-8 before losing the last ten frames.

He said: "I'm not going to lie, I didn't want Ronnie to equal my record, and I don't want him to beat it. Why would I? But if he does, then fair play. He has taken the game to a new level and he is a wonderful snooker player. But it was also a relief. Maybe not that night - because there was a bit of sadness that he had won a seventh - but after a while it felt as if pressure was lifted from me because he has picked up the mantle now." Hendry also discusses the current state of his own game, his work as a television commentator and analyst, and the launch of his YouTube channel.

Ronnie O'Sullivan finally got to No. 7.Widely regarded as the most talented snooker player ever, O'Sullivan surely secured his status as the game's greatest by beating Judd Trump 18-13 to win a record-tying seventh world championship."That's probably the greatest result I've ever had," O'Sullivan said after sharing a long, tearful embrace with Trump at the end of the final at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. The 46-year-old Englishman joined Stephen Hendry in holding the modern-day record, adding to his world titles from 2001, '04, '08, '12, '13 and '20. Hendry won all of his in the 1990s.O'Sullivan also has won a record seven titles at each of the Masters and the U.K. Championship, the other two so-called "majors" in snooker.A right-hander who is also comfortable playing left-handed, O'Sullivan has the most career ranking titles (39), is the only player to make more than 1,000 competitive centuries, and has made more maximum breaks of 147 in competitive play than anyone else.Reaching seven world titles has long been a target of O'Sullivan's, though, and establishing a 12-5 lead over Trump after two of the final's four possible sessions set him on the way.Trump, the 2019 champion and also from England, recovered in the afternoon session and twice came within three frames of O'Sullivan.O'Sullivan held himself together to compile a match-clinching break of 85 before breaking down in tears in the arms of Trump."It's been a pleasure to share a table with him," said Trump, who grew up idolizing O'Sullivan. "It's an amazing achievement and he's the best player of all time."Hendry was in the commentary box at the Crucible and said it was a privilege to share the record with O'Sullivan."I'm actually surprised it's taken him so long to get to No. 7," Hendry said.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
