EPISODE 76 -Our guest today is Alison Tedford is an author, consultant and a mom. I'm Indigenous (Kwakiutl First Nation) and based in Abbotsford, BC. I have over a decade of government experience contributing to culturally sensitive data storytelling, policy analysis and program development and seven years of private sector experience creating information products that educate, inform and delight. I've helped entrepreneurs, governments and brand leaders design their visions of inclusion, strategize about how to get there with practical, concrete action and find the words to talk about it. I create an inviting space where questions are encouraged and welcome and that allows for growth and experimentation.Doing Good and Telling Better StoriesI take an intersectional approach and collaborate with non-profits and businesses that honour that Black, Trans and Indigenous Lives Matter, that disability access is a right not a privilege and that further the equality of women. I believe in creating an affinity based on shared values to create a committed community instead of driving action through fear, pity and shame. The Right Words At The Right TimeI believe in telling stories that centre the strength of communities that are served, sharing perspectives respectfully, through consent-based practices and in a way that's culturally sensitive. The best way we can respect our partners, the people who benefit from social impact work, is to share about these collaborations in a way that is anti-exploitative, does not centre narratives of saviorism and protects the dignity of all involved.Ethical impact storytelling allows impact-driven leaders to demonstrate stewardship of resources, keep donors and consumers informed of the impact of their dollars to drive retention, maintain trust and invite their audience to join in and get involved with what matters most to them. http://alisontedford.com/ ___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Have a podcast and need a great website? In this episode of the Revenue Accelerator Podcast, we have invited Alison Tedford, a business consultant and author specializing in inclusive communications. She did work in the public service around creating inclusion for indigenous people within the federal prison system. Today, Alison discusses inclusiveness and communications, their respective origins, and how they interact.Telling Someone's Story[00:45]When you think about storytelling and the role of a storyteller, you have to recognize the historical relationships that your subjects have had with who tells their stories, how they're represented in media, how their narratives are framed, and what level of consent they've experienced when their stories are told. It's important to consider when you're telling stories about people who are either different from you or share your identity. Writing Isn't Just Writing[03:54]It involves relating, mediating, translating, and interest-based negotiation. Sometimes, you have to be able to come back to a subject and say, I understand why these things are important to include. We need to figure out how to share that with an audience who might not have the same frame of reference and knowledge base. [04:50]Things can be factually accurate. But the aspects of a story that are emphasized and how things are positioned can make a difference in how people feel.Inclusion Value[08:19]When you are inclusive, you create many more opportunities for people. It's important not to engage in perfectionism to the point where you continue to exclude people who haven't had opportunities. You need to do the best that you can to create a space that is going to accommodate people.[10:31]What are your values? Who do you want to include? If somebody comes across your website if somebody comes across your work, experiences, your services, how would they be able to see those things? If those things aren't things you can articulate, or aren't built into your processes or language, then that's something to evaluate if things need to shift and research what people need. And how might you need to do things differently?[16:02]It's good to be clear about where you stand and understand who your people are and what they care about. Diversity Inclusion Statement[22:19]It's something that should be a living document. It shouldn't be something that you copy and paste because the way you include people might change over time because norms and expectations can change. Technology can change, and there are lots of different aspects that will change over time. So it's important to be current with your statements so that people know what to expect.Conclusion[25:10]Regarding diversity inclusion, sometimes people are afraid because they think they will be lectured and made to feel bad about themselves. It's not about guilt; it's about growth. We're all humans conditioned by our environments, and there's a lot of messaging out there that we internalize just being people. When we know better, we can do better.Discover more about Alison Tedford by visiting: http://alisontedford.com/ Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

"If we don't have the competency to actually be able to serve folks with different experiences, then it can actually be more harmful than closing the door to somebody.” Alison Tedford Everyone, regardless of their differences and abilities, desire to feel welcome and valued wherever they go. By creating a positive work environment that is inclusive, businesses position themselves for greater success. Our guest today, Alison Tedford, helps business be more inclusive and says that it is all about cultivating empathy and matching what businesses communicate with their actions. Alison Tedford is an author, business consultant in inclusive communications and Indigenous mother from Abbotsford, BC, Canada. She has written five books and advocates on issues of disability and Indigenous rights.  In today's episode, Alison talks about her career journey and how it prepared her for the work she currently does of helping business be more inclusive and cohesive. Listen in! Social media handles:  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alisontedford Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/alisontedford Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/alliespins  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alison-tedford-4a064793/  I started my career working for the Canadian federal government where I worked on indigenous issues within residential school claims, and then moving into the prison system. [2:20] I moved into the private sector and moved that big government experience into the private sector to help small businesses. [3:08] Diversity is about cultivating empathy and creating experiences where people feel welcome and valued. [4:38] A lot of people tend to shy away from having those conversations because they feel they don't want to get political. [5:22] The ultimate message is about letting people know that I care about what they're going through and what happens to them. [5:35] Politics will influence things and the decisions that are made impact different people in different ways. [6:25] It is just understanding that people are all having different experiences, and things are impacting them on different levels. [6:40] Often people come to me because they want to make a statement about something that's happened. [7:25] We always want to make it clear that we care about what's happening and that we're an inclusive business welcoming all sorts of people. [7:35] We have to look at how we make the experience match with what's in our hearts and what we want to say. [8:04] It's really about creating checks and balances so that your message is cohesive. [8:26] I don't have the same budget like Amazon or Google to implement some big initiative, but we can start from where we are instead and look at what we can do with the budget we have. [9:52] I try to encourage folks that it's okay to focus on an area that you're passionate about. [10:49] Just because you care about things doesn't mean you have to care about all the things all the time, you still have to leave room for yourself and to serve your clients. [11:15] The reality is that we need to welcome people that we're ready to serve. [11:35] If we don't have the competency to actually be able to serve folks with different experiences, then it can actually be more harmful than closing the door to somebody. [11:42] We don't have to be everything for everybody but we want to be intentional about having respect, care and concern for all people. [12:28] Commercial break [14:10] I try to keep things as simple as possible where I create systems that enable me do things consistently. [14:42 I try to make sure that I'm taking time to take care of myself as much as possible. [17:52] If you're going to spend the time and the energy and take the risks, it should be for something that means something to you. [18:14] I really make sure that what I do matters to me, and it's something that I feel like is consistent with what I want to see in the world. [18:50] I took a lot of time to experiment and find what I liked and finding the best environments. [20:39] There's so much abundance of opportunity and we really have to be judicious about what we decide to invest in. [21:02] If you're looking to make your business more inclusive, but you're feeling inadequate, remember Brene Brown's quote that say ‘Daring leaders are never silent about hard things. [21:52] If you're a business owner, you're daring leader meaning you're already qualified to speak on hard things. [22:09] You innovate every single day, and so you can innovate the way you work with people too. Science writer, Andrew Fazekas, The Night Sky Guy, author of National Geographic Backyard Guide to the Night Sky, is back talking about future missions to the Moon.  This week’s guest slate is presented by Marc “Mais Oui” Denis, a legendary Montreal broadcaster whom I had the pleasure to both idolize as a teenager and work with as a broadcaster.  Check out his website where he has tribute pages to both CKGM, Montreal’s former Top 40 giant in the 60’s & 70’s and also 1410 CFOX Montreal

To thrive in life, and to make money at work, we are told that there is a formula for success: work hard, hustle, be a team player, follow the rules, check off all the boxes, move up the ladder, think outside the box (but not that far outside!),  and definitely don't let your personal life affect your work performance.  But what if you are inherently missing an ingredient in that formula?   Alison Tedford is here to tell you that formulas are  exclusionary by default, that you most decidedly do NOT have to hustle to thrive, and you can take care of your own wellbeing FIRST, while still making money. Listen to this interview to hear how we can build a more accessible and equitable workforce,  do work that works for us, and continue to dismantle the toxic/patriarchal/grind culture that leaves us all exhausted.   Alison  is an author, diversity and inclusion expert and entrepreneur from Abbotsford, BC, Canada. She's an Indigenous mom with a disability and hope for a more accessible future. Her book Chronic Profit helps entrepreneurs struggling with chronic pain to simplify, systematize and use self-care to build businesses and lives that work for them.Follow Alison on the Gram!
