On this episode I am joined by Lane Igoudin. In his candid and poignant memoir, A Family, Maybe Two Dads, Two Babies and the Court  Cases that Brought Us Together,  Lane details his and his husband Jonathan's fraught path through the Los Angeles County's foster-to-adopt process. A Family, Maybe offers an unprecedented look into the adoption process as it affects the lives of everyone involved, from the children taken into the system, to the suffering birth parents, to the couples hoping desperately to start a family of their own.In the fall of 2005, after years of preparation, planning, and waiting for a chance to raise a family, Jon and Lane were given the opportunity to foster an infant named Marianna. Lane and Jon fell in love with the child and decided they would give her the best life they could. Marianna's mother, a teenager in foster care herself, had voluntarily placed her in foster care before going AWOL. With her birth mother absent and father unknown, Marianna seemed to be on the fast-track to becoming adoptable. The couple could not have predicted the return of the child's mother, still in foster care, and the news that she was expecting a second child. With the second child also came the sudden appearance of the baby's birth father, a man 10 years older than the mother, which would complicate the kids' cases and begin to pull Lane and Jon's family apart.A Family, Maybe documents the ensuing spiral, rife with legal challenges, emotional blows, and no less important, political strife. In the early 2000s, with gay marriage and adoption still illegal in most U.S. states, Lane and Jon's family would join the first wave of out LGBTQ+ families fighting for respect and equality. A Family, Maybe is a story of hope and heartbreak; of relatable first-time parenting highs and lows, but also with the pressure of knowing the family you've built could be ripped from you at any moment.Lane IgoudinLane Igoudin (@laneigoudin) • Instagram photos and videosAshley ~ Filled Up Cup podcast (@filledupcup_) • Instagram photos and videosFilled Up Cup - Unconventional Self Care for Modern Women

She first learnt about plants and recipes from her grandmother who still remembered traditional remedies and folklore. After studying law and then herbal medicine, Amanda found it natural to start bringing together stories, plants, and magical places, drawing on the Scottish storytelling tradition, but in her own unique way. She has been showcasing her own work for over 10 years, performing and creating art in museums, libraries, forests, castles, schools and universities around the world under the banner Botanica Fabula. We discuss her book: The Time Travelers Herbal, Stories and Recipes from the Historical Apothecary Cabinet. Steeped in history, the herbalist's art paved the way for modern science - but didn't necessarily need to have been replaced by it. In The Time Traveler's Herbal, the traditional remedies and recipes that were passed down through the ages are offered to the modern reader as a means to reconnect with the natural world, while reaping the benefits. Steeped in the stories through which these remedies have been passed down to us, our connection to the past is fully explored in a romantic and meandering journey through the plants and flowers that have healed and helped us through the ages.  Amanda has offered a special discount (CURIOUSHERBAL25) for her Very Curious Herbal online courses.   https://www.botanicafabula.co.uk/online-courses We discuss her upcoming "Remedy for Valentine's Day" event. Angela is a Registered Clinical Counsellor and Founder of An Elegant Mind (AEM) Counselling Inc., a private practice that specializes in relational intimacy, sex, and psychedelics. Angela holds a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of British Columbia. She has over 10 years of experience helping people from the lowest to the highest rungs of society find meaning in life. At AEM, clients are taken through three levels of healing: individually–where you carve out your authentic sense of self, relationally—where you learn relational skills, and sexually—where you learn to use pleasure as a form of intimate relating and a way of being. The AEM method involves a deep acknowledgement of core wounds, the development of key skills for functional, loving relationships and the psycho-education required for the embodiment of the sexual self. Clients who have worked with therapists using the AEM Method  have experienced deep emotional release, compassionate strategies for becoming unstuck, and transformation into more authentic versions of self expression. On this episode we discuss the stigma and shame that can be associated with sexuality. It can start in childhood when curiosity around the topic can first start to develop. Angela shares her experience of going to the library to read books on puberty and always being interested in sex. Plant medicines and her education taught her self-love on a deeply profound neurological level which allowed her to seek out partners that were on her same level. Coming from a place of open-ness she wanted to hold space for others that are struggling to feel comfortable in their sexuality and unlearn the feelings of shame and guilt. She also shares her experience with psychedelics as a consumer and clinician. Psychedelics can have such a profound impact on mental health and emotional healing. We discuss what incorporating ketamine into therapy is like at AEM and what considerations you should have prior to receiving that type of treatment. An Elegant Mind Counselling: Vancouver Clinic for Psychological CounsellingVancouver Psychological Counselling Clinic (@anelegantmind) • Instagram photos and videosAngela Ivy Leong (@angelaleongrcc) • Instagram photos and videosAshley (@filledupcup_) • Instagram photos and videosFilled Up Cup - Unconventional Self Care for Modern WomenSOLD On The DreamWhat's a life selling real estate really like? Several psychiatry textbooks directly state this. According to Donna's research, it's not true. Senior Sociopaths is based on surveys of 2,377 Lovefraud readers who described their experiences with sociopaths who were age 50 or older. With a television announcing early statistics about pandemic mortality playing in the background while he learned that a significant portion of his practice—and ability to care for patients—was being restricted, he had an emotional breakdown. Facing physician burnout and depression, Pianka decided to sit down and write an outline about staying fit and healthy in a seemingly chaotic existence, and he kept writing until the sun came out (literally and metaphorically). What began as a simple reference guide for his patients, conceptualized prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, evolved into an unexpected second career as an inspirational writer. And, once it seemed possible after publication, he realized he wasn't done yet: All of his proceeds from the book will be donated to Ukraine relief. This book is entirely about creating meaningful difference for others, and the people in the Ukraine are the most in need of help right now. “Profits that would mean little to me in the grand scheme of things may mean everything to some of them.” It's All in Your Head was written directly for everyday individuals with busy lives and varied hobbies. Rather than another “how to” manual, it is a “why to” guide through the complicated space of fitness and nutrition. Incorporating the fundamental principles universal to successful diet and fitness programs and teaching self-motivation skills, It's All in Your Head unlocks doors to previously unrecognized potential and the ability to maintain fitness dreams. We have an in depth conversation about his personal experience with burnout and what the pandemic has been like from a front line workers perspective. We talk about the warning signs to look for, ways to start making positive changes and what he knows helped him permanently change things both mentally and physically. Joseph D.
