It ain't fall 'til September 23rd y'all. Hold onto sweet, scary summer for one more day by joining your resident basement girls Steph Grossman and Bianca Pérez in their discussion about the summer camp horror film that started it all: the original FRIDAY THE 13TH. Topics include a brief history of summer camp, the "whodunnit" aspect of the film, Steph's despise of Neddy, cozy horror, feminist subtext, final girls, motherhood, and how the famous "ch ch ch ah ah ah" sound is actually a remix of "kill kill kill ma ma ma" (really! That's what it says!). We also answer questions and comments from a few listeners who also happen to be authors: William Jensen, Brendan Deneen, and Amy Gentry. Amy Gentry is the author of the brand new suspense novel, BAD HABITS, a page turner with an eerie, cult-like academic setting—and a deadly outcome. This episode is a deep dive into the classist, racist, and often exploitative structures within universities. We talk sex as power, desire as weakness, the roles privilege plays in intellectual pursuits, and the erotics of pedagogy. It’s a delicious conversation dripping with intellect and innuendo. Amy--who holds a PhD in English from the University of Chicago--talks about her experiences in academic circles and how she sees class privilege, racism, and cult-like dynamics at play in them. Carly shares her experiences in graduate school of pronouncing words wrong while rubbing up against people who came to intellectual pursuits as a "birthright." Amy talks about the blurred lines in student-professor relationships at university and looks at the types of exchanges of power that can happen in hierarchal systems. We talk about the vulnerability of wanting something so hard that it makes you susceptible to exploitation or abuse. Amy divulges on the "sexy professor" trope and why it's such a common fantasy, and how she wrote the sex scenes in BAD HABITS. Amy talks about sex scenes in novels as "choreography," which Amy credits to Layne Fargo, the author of a bunch of super sexy thrillers, such as They Never Learn. Amy talks about the fun of writing characters who do unspeakable things, and the work of understanding their motives. Amy recommends Lisa Ruddick's academic writing on academia (how meta!). Her piece, When Nothing is Cool, is her most famous. She also references Kate Mann's Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny when we discuss the image of women with desire. Buy BAD HABITS here. Find Amy on Twitter (though she's taking a brief hiatus from Twitter) and Instagram @unlandedgentry.

Create the experiences you feel are necessary to better relate to your peers, supervisors and clients. 2. Share your career goals and/or areas of interest with your boss(es), they will remember and help you when the time is right.3. Reach out and ask for help, even if you are no longer a baby lawyer.4. Amy Gentry's live event at BookPeople Bookstore in Austin, Tx.
We are enjoying "Sex Education" on Netflix. Quite charming. Julia "speed listened" today's book. More on that Fyre concert disaster. Guest is Amy Gentry, author of "Last Woman Standing". "The Unknown Singer" update.
The author of” Good is Gone” has a terrific 2nd novel of suspense out and we could not put it down. Dana Diaz is an aspiring stand-up comic – a woman in a “man’s world”. When she meets Amanda Dorn after bombing at a comedy night they realize they have a common bond. They both work in a male dominated field (Amanda is a computer programmer) and they have both been wronged. Then Amanda talks Dana into a plan….for revenge. What happens next simply has to be read. This is the first book of 2019 that Hollywood should be fighting over!
Join us this Wednesday as we speak with author Amy Gentry

Horror writers like Stephen King and thriller writers like Gillian Flynn make us fear for their characters and look over our own shoulders. But it’s not as easy as writing, “Suddenly someone jumped out of the dark!” How do novels create that spooky, white-knuckle effect? In October, WLT Program Director Michael Noll spoke about these topics and more with writers Amanda Downum, Meg Gardiner, Amy Gentry, and Scott Johnson.

Join us this Wednesday as we speak with author Amy Gentry about her debut novel
For the eighth episode of The BodPod, Amy Gentry and I conducted a mutual interview. Amy writes The Good Eye, a column on style, culture, and feminism that appears every week in the Austin Chronicle. The BodPod was featured in her January 9th column. Amy holds a PhD in English from the University of Chicago and reviews fiction for the Chicago Tribune. She writes her own fiction as well, and is currently working on a novel that she describes as a "Houston mother-daughter noir." We covered a lot of ground in Part One: parental body policing; exercise in high school and beyond; changing fashion creating new insecurities, mainly for women; dance. In Part Two, Amy discusses her experience as an advocate for Safe Place, an organization that provides safety for individuals and families affected by sexual and domestic violence. We also discussed other issues, including Amy's horror fiction inspired by her Safe Place experience, and our feelings about Texas and post-Wendy Davis filibuster. Both parts are solid!
