This Saturday's "Saturday Matinee" on Vintage Classic Radio kicks off with the delightful "Our Miss Brooks" in the episode titled "Summer Vacation," which originally aired on September 4th, 1955. In this episode, the ever-enthusiastic Miss Brooks, portrayed by Eve Arden, looks forward to a peaceful summer vacation but her plans are humorously thwarted by the unexpected company of her beloved, albeit quirky, colleagues and students. The cast includes Gale Gordon as the blustery Principal Osgood Conklin, Richard Crenna as the earnest student Walter Denton, Jane Morgan as Mrs. Davis, and Jeff Chandler as the charming Mr. Boynton. Following that, we'll tune into "The Hardy Family" with an episode from 1949 called "Family Night Watchman.” Here, Mickey Rooney reprises his film role as the energetic teenager Andy Hardy. In this episode, Andy takes on the role of a night watchman for the family business, leading to a series of comedic misadventures. The episode features Lewis Stone as Judge Hardy and Fay Holden as Mrs. Hardy, bringing warmth and wisdom to the Hardy household. We cap off the matinee with "The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show" in the episode "Hotel Harris" from October 5th, 1952. Phil Harris and Alice Faye play exaggerated versions of themselves, dealing with the chaos of running a hotel. The humor escalates with Phil's bumbling management style and Alice's attempts to maintain order. The show also stars Elliott Lewis as Frankie Remley, Walter Tetley as Julius, and Robert North as Willie, all adding to the hilarity with their unique quirks. Each episode promises a blend of humor and nostalgia, bringing some of radio's most beloved characters back to life for the modern audience.

For our MGM 1943 episode, we look at two films that are highly representative of the Mayer ethos, The Human Comedy (directed by Clarence Brown), a portrait of WWII-era American small-town life infused with the beatific sensibility of William Saroyan (who provided the story), with Mickey Rooney in a coming-of-age story that's equal parts Andy Hardy and David Lynch; and the children's classic Lassie Come Home (directed by Fred M. Wilcox), which we compare to Mizoguchi's Sansho the Bailiff as a sold-into-slavery story but find wanting in its social analysis despite its Communist screenwriter. We try to tease the strangeness out of the sentiment—which doesn't really take much doing.    Time Codes: 0h 00m 45s:      THE HUMAN COMEDY [Dir. It is a uniquely American film about a fascinating time in American history. It has a backstory that's wonderful. But ultimately, it is a hopeful story, a hopeful story being told in a time when hope was somewhat limited.     The concept of the Human Comedy is based on the work of William Saroyan and William wrote in the style that been referred to as Troyan esque, it is optimistic, perhaps sentimental, at the same time as being somewhat cynical of the role of society and rules. Basically, it's this idea that everyone in a society is a value in as much as they present, a goodness of sorts, and that becomes more hazy. sering wrote the original screenplay and gave it to Louis B. Mayer of MGM, and Mayer picked up this 240 Page screenplay and said that Saroyan wasn't going to direct it as he had kind of hoped. And he had actually made a short film called The Good Job as sort of an audition for that. Mayer gave the script to another screenwriter and to a different director. And Serena adapted that screenplay into the novel The Human Comedy, which became his biggest seller.     The film was excellent. And it featured, among others, Frank Morgan, as the telegraph operator who was fantastic. He, I think, deserved incredibly high billing. And I think he even got it. We also had, of course, Mickey Rooney, who was the biggest star in the world at that point. Well, okay, one of the biggest stars in the world, he was huge. Donna Reed, Van Johnson, this wonderful set of character actors, which is actually the perfect set of actors to have for this story. Because it's not a straight narrative. There's narrative elements, of course, there's a through line. The idea being that the McCauley family is in Ithaca, California in the Central Valley during World War Two, and the oldest son is off at war, the other son has taken a job at the telegraph office, delivering messages, which are often messages of members of their families being killed in action.     And we see the interactions between people. What's fascinating is that serine often focused on sort of the focus on immigrant populations, he focused on the downtrodden, the gamblers, the sex workers, to a lesser degree. Here, he focuses on the McCauley family that is decidedly WASPey, for lack of a better word. And what he's done is he has presented them as poor or at least lower on the economic ladder, but an incredibly tight family, an incredibly loving family, and most importantly, I think, an incredibly earnest family, and that earnestness makes the dynamics of the story work. The shooting is wonderful, the script is great. There's probably not a lot of saurians original script, it's he won the Oscar for Best Story. And the story is all there really, but I think the way the dialogue is handled is less certain than it is traditional Hollywood dialoguing. What makes a story so powerful, though, is the fact that there is a positivity towards every scene, even when it's scenes of conflict. There are scenes of conflict towards an end, which is positive and beautiful. In other words, it's a Williams Orion story. Mickey Rooney is great in it. I love Mickey Rooney in general. I think here is his best non Andy Hardy work until we would see him in Sugar Babies and other things in the 70s and 80s.     I think that Johnson is great. We there's not a lot of him, but there's just enough that I was very pleased. None of reads. Okay, she's got her moments. But the real star is Frank Morgan. And his presentation is precisely what we get from Saroyan's take on the character and we see this 100% In the scenes where he is dealing with the sons and how he presents what he does. I mean, it's a kind of a showy role, honestly. The youngest     I love the family is adorable as always, I think it just Jack Jenkins was his name. I don't know if he did much after. But overall, every performance in it is good. The script is solid. The cinematography is good. I wouldn't say it was one of the best, the best shot films of the time, but it's beautiful. It really is. And that just may be my black and white bias. But ultimately, it is the best example of William Saurian on fill the time of your life also presents that serinus quality but is really more of a James Cagney film. But here you are getting to run through a work that isn't entirely so Ryan. And that actually helps that I think there was a remake of this done called Ithaca I believe in 2016 Directed by Meg Ryan, featuring Tom Hanks, Hamish Linklater, who is actually great in it, and it's okay. It's nothing special. But the original is so strong and such an excellent document of its time that it deserves to be included on the National Film Registry. Enjoy two free comedy episodes of The Aldrich Family w/ Bobby Ellis A) 11/23/52 Thanksgiving Show B) 12/14/52 Renting the Aldrich's House The Aldrich Family was the quintessential teenage sitcom, focusing on the comic exploits of Henry Aldrich as he negotiated the challenges of growing up in the modern age. Youngsters were quick to identify with Henry, a typical teenager in high school, who – along with his pal Homer Brown - faced adolescent tribulations on a weekly basis. The success of the program stemmed from its insight into the curious facets of an adolescent's nature and perhaps that was why teenagers of the times made up the largest group of faithful listeners. Henry Aldrich was the brainchild of Clifford Goldsmith, who wrote What a Life in 1937, a stageplay in which the character of Henry Aldrich first appeared. Henry's misadventures were broadcast as 10-minute insertions on Rudy Vallee's program in 1937, and became a weekly feature on Kate Smith's radio show throughout 1938. By 1939, the concept was expanded into a half-hour situation comedy series entitled The Aldrich Family. MGM's popular Andy Hardy movies had influenced the series. Andy's father was a judge and Henry's father was an attorney by profession and, like Judge Hardy, the patriarch to whom family members could turn to for advice. But most of the radio adventures centered on Henry's zany experiences. Ezra Stone was radio's first Henry Aldrich and would have the role the longest. There were other actors to portray Henry, including Norman Tokar, Raymond Ives, Dickie Jones and Bobby Ellis. Within two years, The Aldrich Family reached the top ten. A Crossley rating of 33.4 percent of listeners meant the show rivaled Jack Benny and Bob Hope. Hoping to cash in on the Andy Hardy film success, Paramount produced 11 Aldrich Family movies. A TV series and comic books followed. The show's popularity inspired a number of other well-meaning teenage sitcoms including: Archie Andrews, A Date With Judy, Meet Corliss Archer and That Brewster Boy.

The Philadelphia Story, in addition to being an interesting early rom-com, reflects well on one of the great mid-century movie titans, MGM. Tim tracks the story - the rise and fall, the palace intrigue, the style and viewpoint - of MGM through the momentous The Philadelphia Story and two smaller features in Love Finds Andy Hardy by George B. Seitz and Tea and Sympathies by Vincente Minnelli. Tim also official declares himself a leading scholar of Andy Hardy studies, while he and Matt would both like short men to calm down and realized that miniscule Mickey Rooney was once married to Ava Gardner.

The movies starring Fred Astaire with a variety of dance partners - notably Ginger Rogers - were popular as were the Andy Hardy films with Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney. We also attempt to ask a few questions along the way. Buckle up for a great Hollywood back lot story.Hole in the FenceBy: Donnie NordenAll of the stories in this book were written and lived by me, Donnie Norden. I was lucky enough to grow up in the "Heart of Screenland", which is how Culver City identifies itself. My plan is to chronicle and share my stories from this magical time. My true adventure diary- growing up on the MGM and Desilu backlots. Come trespass with me if you dare, through these enchanting, iconic landscapes. Go where cameras don't show you. It's dangerous for sure. You'll need to climb – very rapidly. You could get chased by Security or Guard dogs or arrested or hurt. Still want to come? Once inside you will never want to leave. My pals and I were soldiers in WWII villages, cowboys on the dusty streets of Tombstone, and pirates on the Bounty. On the rare occasions when it rained, we danced in Gene Kelly's footsteps in Singin' in the Rain. From that first time I poked my 10-year-old head through a hole in the tall fence surrounding the MGM backlot near my house in Culver City, I became intrigued, maybe obsessed. I began a coming-of-age journey through the studio backlots and through movies and TV shows past and present – the history, the romance, the fantasy, and how it all looked real, because it was real.I'll take you from sidewalks used in Singing in the Rain to Atlanta, where Gone With the Wind was filmed. We will hang out in Andy Griffith's house, the Walton's house and Andy Hardy's house. We'll watch as filming takes place on films and TV shows of the 70's from our staked out hidden birds-eye view locations. I'll even take you inside the tree stump used in Hogan's Heroes. We'll visit other studios as well like Warner's and Disney.During this decade-long period of trespassing, my success at eluding the guards caused MGM Studios to hire additional guards, known as “Studio Police”, to catch me… “The Phantom,” as I came to be known!A link to purchase Donnie's book on AmazonPodcast music:Intro and ending music Kamihamiha! - Alien Warfare Stems by Kamihamiha (c) copyright 2020 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial  (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/Kamihamiha/60882extra musichttps://pixabay.com/per Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial  (3.0) license.Podcast ©2022 King Dyro ProductionsMovie Reviews and Serious Nonsense is a King Dyro Production

In nearly thirty years of interviewing celebrities and big names, I didn't often get very Starstruck, but this day I did. It's hard to overstate how big a star Mickey Rooney was. Only a few more days until the next Riverdale. In the meanwhile, dig this:When we look back at American family life in the late 1930s, many of us view it not through the eyes of reality but, instead, thru the rose colored glasses of popular culture. If you were young yourself at that time, you have a more realistic memory of those years - but, if you're a baby boomer and beyond, you're more likely to imagine a typical American home, circa 1940, as being in Carvel where a teenager named Andy Hardy lives: clean, pleasant, prosperous, and where every challenge, crisis, or misadventure is resolved in time for a happy ending - complete with the occasional musical number. It's not surprising that we have this rosy vision of the past; after all, every entertainment medium did its best to create and sustain this image. Hollywood gave us a seemingly endless series of Andy Hardy movies, the Broadway stage gave us "What a Life!" which introduced the perpetually teenaged Henry Aldrich, and radio quickly turned Henry and his friend Homer into comedy characters that would endure for over a decade. As the 1940s progressed, the trend continued: perky teenager Corliss Archer came to radio in 1943, as did "A Date with Judy" - both sit-coms featuring a typical teenage girl dealing with her boyfriends, her often baffled parents, and the overwhelming dramas of high school social life. But it wasn't the stage, screen, or radio that would bring us our most enduring and innocent image of teenaged life; it was, instead, the comics. In December of 1941, just two weeks after Pearl Harbor, Pep Comics introduced a new character that continues to entertain readers to this very day - and his name is Archie Andrews. From the beginning, Archie was the epitome of the American teenager of the 1940s: dressed in a polka dot bow tie and a letterman's sweater that proclaimed his loyalty to Riverdale High, he drove a souped-up jalopy, hung out with the perpetually lazy Jughead Jones, and spent most of his time in a lovesick haze. Aside from occasional crushes on movie goddesses, Archie divided his affection between two teenaged beauties: Betty Cooper, a bright and down-to-earth blonde, and Veronica Lodge, a wealthy brunette who loved to toy with Archie's affections. Hitting just the right mix of familiarity, slapstick comedy, and small-town warmth, Archie and his pals were an instant hit with teen readers - and, in less than a year, the characters had made their way from comic books to a daily newspaper comic strip and to radio. In its first incarnation, "The Adventures of Archie Andrews" was a daily fifteen-minute radio series, aired over the Blue Network. Ratings were respectable and, after a brief move to a half-hour weekly slot, the five-a-week format returned on Mutual in 1944. But the series really hit its stride in June of 1945, when a largely new cast was introduced and it premiered over NBC in a Saturday morning slot that it would happily occupy for eight years. For the majority of the Saturday morning run, Archie was played by Bob Hastings, a talented young actor who had already made his reputation playing juveniles on dramatic programs. Woman-hating food-loving Jughead was played by Harlan Stone, perky Betty was played by Rosemary Rice, and the honey-voiced Veronica was played by Gloria Mann. If you were looking for subtlety or teenaged angst, you were never going to find it on "The Adventures of Archie Andrews"; in typical sit-com fashion, the plots usually revolved around some simple misunderstanding that quickly turned into bedlam. Aimed straight at a pre-teen audience, the programs were designed to be nothing more than loud, goofy, and fun - and, from the reactions of the studio audience that attended each live broadcast, the show was clearly adored by its listeners.

Mickey Rooney was six years old when he debuted in a silent film titled "Not To Be Trusted" from 1926, yet it was not his first time on stage. He made an appearance in vaudeville as an infant. As the star in the  Andy Hardy radio series, he played a teenager from Centerville, USA and the show was as successful as the 17 Hardy Family feature films made from 1938 to 1959 . In those films, his radio co-stars, Fay Holden and Lewis Stonewere were also featured.
