Courtney B. Vance is known for playing men of power and purpose — from Johnnie Cochran in “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” to Uncle George Freeman in “Lovecraft Country,” Vance now takes on Cobra Bubbles in the live action remake of Lilo & Stitch. He joins Tom Power to talk about the emotional depth of Bubbles in the new remake, how growing up as a Black actor in Detroit during the 1967 uprising shaped him, and why he didn't watch a single video of the late Johnnie Cochran before playing him in "The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story."
She became a household name in the 90s as the lead prosecutor in O.J. Simpson's trial, but her career in law was accidental. Marcia Clark initially wanted to be an actress! Even though the prosecutor, author, and host had different career goals, she admits to Sophia that her interest in criminal law and solving mysteries started at a very young age! She also shares what it was like being in the eye of the storm during the trial of the century, the sexism directed at her, and how she felt when she first heard about the limited series The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story. Plus, Marcia talks about her new podcast, 'Informants: Lawyer X,' which is about a high-profile defense attorney who turned police informer against her own clients, and that is just the tip of the iceberg! Over the past several years, true crime's hold on the culture has tightened into a vice grip, with new titles flooding podcast charts and streaming platforms on a daily basis. This week on Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz take stock of the phenomenon, first by speaking with fans of the genre to understand its appeal. Then, onstage at the 2024 Cascade PBS Ideas Festival, they continue the discussion with The New Yorker's Patrick Radden Keefe, whose books “Empire of Pain” and “Say Nothing” are exemplars of the form. The panel considers Keefe's recent piece, “The Oligarch's Son,” which illuminates the journalistic challenges of reporting on sordid events—not least the difficulty of managing the emotions and expectations of victims' families. As its appeal has skyrocketed, true crime has come under greater scrutiny. The most successful entries bypass lurid details and shed light on the society in which these transgressions occur. But “the price you have to pay in sociology, in anthropology, in enriching our understanding of something beyond the crime itself—it's fairly high,” Keefe says. “You have to remember that this is a real story about real people. They're alive. They're out there.” This episode was recorded on May 4, 2024 at the Cascade PBS Ideas Festival, in Seattle, Washington. Sarah finally caved and watched Ryan Murphy's Jeffrey Dahmer series, the second most-popular show in Netflix history. (Can you guess the first?). It was difficult viewing, if also able to inspire a kind of love for one of Dahmer's victims. As she and Nancy discuss, the reasons to watch/not watch these shows are complicated. Is it possible to humanize victims who met a most inhumane end? Who gets to profit from misery, and what, if anything, do creators of dramatized true crime owe to those whose real lives were forever scarred? Nancy instead watched part of the Dahmer documentary, and she and Sarah compare notes on fictional vs. nonfictional tragedy. Did Alex Jones learn the meaning of “fuck around and find out”? Oh yes he did, and yet does not seem to care that he owes the parents of the children murdered at Sandy Hook nearly $1 billion. Nancy is appalled by Stewart's much-praised interview with Arkansas AG Leslie Rutledge, Sarah misses the old Jon Stewart, and we compare Stewart's smug “take-down” to a deeply reported, illuminating Reuters story on trans issues. Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski are the award-winning screenwriters and producers behind films like “Ed Wood,” “The People vs. Larry Flynt” and “Man on the Moon.” On the small screen, they were also behind the Emmy-winning miniseries “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.”Their new movie, “Dolemite Is My Name,” starring Eddie Murphy, tells the story of entrepreneur Rudy Ray Moore, an inspirational figure of the Blaxploitation film movement. The screenwriting duo obviously trades in biopics -- real-life stories about real-life people. But that's a tricky trade. How do you tell the story of a life? What players do you eliminate or consolidate? What timeline do you cover? This week’s episode of “The Call Sheet” covers that ground and a whole lot more!

Today on the Neil Haley Show, The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview MARCC ROSE of ‘UNSOLVED: THE MURDERS OF TUPAC AND THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G.' UNSOLVED: THE MURDERS OF TUPAC AND THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G. is a 10-episode, scripted true crime limited series that chronicles the dual police investigations of Detective Greg Kading (Josh Duhamel) and Detective Russell Poole (Jimmi Simpson) into the controversial murders of two of the rap industry's most legendary players, Tupac Shakur (Marcc Rose) and Christopher Wallace, AKA The Notorious B.I.G. (Wavyy Jonez). The series goes beyond the headlines to explore the complicated friendship between these two icons, delving into a culture that both defined them and was forever changed in the wake of their untimely deaths. In seeking the truth behind the conspiracies, the one question that begs to be answered is: how can a case this famous still be unsolved? Emmy® winner Anthony Hemingway (“The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”) directs and executive produces along with Mark Taylor through their Hemingway | Taylor production company. Kyle Long (SUITS) wrote the pilot and also executive produces. Greg Kading, a former LAPD Detective from the 2006 investigation into the murders, and author of the book Murder Rap, also serves as co-executive producer. The limited series is from Universal Cable Productions.
Georg und Eral fanden AMERICAN CRIME STORY: THE PEOPLE V. O. J. SIMPSON großartig. Sie reden über die Serie und kommen lange auf die Kardashians zu sprechen, die sie nicht kennen, aber doch irgendwie, scheint es, fasziniert sind. Pandora's been moving house and Dolly's been hosting Pretendmas (don't ask; she'll tell you all about it anyway) but there are still plenty of water cooler topics to discuss this week. From some brilliant pieces of journalism (including a heart-breaking piece by Empire Editor Terri White on the vital role a woman's refuge played in both her own childhood and in British society as a whole) to plenty of podcast recommendations from the ultimate podcat, Dolly, this week we discuss 'Cat Person', the New Yorker short story that went viral - and what this piece of fiction tells us about modern relationships; toxic masculinity; bad sex and female pleasure. We also play you an excerpt of the shocking and riveting speech given by former Facebook VP Chamath Palihapitiya at Stanford University, on how Facebook is ripping society apart. In light of this and plenty of other disclaimers from both former and present tech execs, we discuss the dangers of social media in both a personal and a social context. From the richest (first world FOMO caused by your Instagram feed) to the poorest (Whatsapp hoax that caused violence in a rural Indian village), we are all affected by social media in its myriad forms. What we are reading, watching and listening to:A Woman's Refuge Saved My Family, by Terri White for The Pool https://www.the-pool.com/life/life-honestly/2017/49/Terri-White-on-the-funding-crisis-hitting-women-s-refugesI Made My Shed The Top Rated Restaurant on Trip Advisor, by Oobah Butler for VICE https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/434gqw/i-made-my-shed-the-top-rated-restaurant-on-tripadvisorThe People vs O.J.Simpson: American Crime Story, on Netflix https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/80083977'Cat Person' - a short story, by Kristen Roupenian for The New Yorker https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/12/11/cat-personFallout, by Sadie Jones https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fallout-Sadie-Jones/dp/0701188502Ladybird directed by Greta Gerwig: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNi_HC839WoCariad Lloyd's Griefcast with Adam Buxton: https://www.acast.com/griefcast/episode-1---adam-buxtonJames Franco on WTF: http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/episode-870-james-francoCariad Lloyd's Made of Human with Jo Brand: http://mohpod.libsyn.com/31-jo-brand-i-was-surprised-the-heroin-addict-was-unfaithful Felicity Morse on Cat Person for The Debrief: https://thedebrief.co.uk/news/real-life/cat-person-short-story-new-yorker-consent/ Amy Jones on Cat Person for The... An Emmy winner in 2016 for The People vs O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, and Emmy nominee this year for this role on the massive NBC hit This Is Us, Sterling K. Brown has had quite a year. Last year we were captivated by the excellent FX drama The People vs O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, starring this week’s guest along with Sara Paulson and John Travolta, just to name a few. Brown portrayed prosecutor Christopher Darden with a performance that was complex, nerve wrecking and critically acclaimed by audiences and critics alike. Brown has had a long acting career with success on both stage and television but his role as Randall on This Is Us seems to have propelled him to the next level. His characters’ emotional journey and struggles have had audiences really connecting with the universal themes of family, joy and loss. The show ended the Spring season as the highest rated new network series among adults 18 to 49 with an impressive 12,8 million viewers watching the season 1 finale. This Is Us returns to NBC for its second season on September 26th with guest appearances by Sylvester Stallone, Dan Lauria and Debra Jo Rupp. Not to be missed! Brown can be seen in the upcoming film Marshall, alongside Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad and Kate Hudson. He is currently in production on three feature films; Marvel’s Black Panther, Fox’s The Predator, and Hotel Artemis, alongside Jodie Foster.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview THE PEOPLE V. O.J. SIMPSON: AMERICAN CRIME STORY Star Bruce Greenwood. He plays DA Gil Garcetti. The show airs Tuesdays at 10pm. ABOUT THE SHOW The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story is a limited series that takes you inside the O.J. Simpson trial with a riveting look at the legal teams battling to convict or acquit the football legend of double homicide. Based on the book The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson by Jeffrey Toobin, it explores the chaotic behind-the-scenes dealings and maneuvering on both sides of the court, and how a combination of prosecution overconfidence, defense shrewdness, and the LAPD's history with the city's African-American community gave a jury what it needed: reasonable doubt. From Executive Producers Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Scott Alexander, Larry Karaszewski and Brad Falchuk, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story stars John Travolta, Cuba Gooding Jr., Sarah Paulson, David Schwimmer, Courtney B. Vance, Sterling Brown, Nathan Lane, Kenneth Choi, Christian Clemenson and Bruce Greenwood. The limited series is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions. Bruce Greenwood recently played CBS News President Andrew Heyward in Truth, Jamie Vanderbilt's drama starring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford. In 2015 Greenwood had a recurring role on the critically-acclaimed TV drama Mad Men. He recently wrapped the sci-fi/thriller Spectral and the drama Father and Daughters opposite Russell Crowe. He was seen in Andrew Niccol's military drama-thriller Good Kill opposite Ethan Hawke. In 2014, Greenwood earned a nomination for a Canadian Screen Award for his performance in the film Elephant Song.
More than twenty years ago, the L.A.P.D. chased O. J. Simpson's white Bronco, kicking off a murder trial that captivated the nation. The New Yorker's Jeffrey Toobin wrote a book about the Simpson case, “The Run of His Life,” which is now the source for the television miniseries “The People vs. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story.” In a conversation with Toobin, Cuba Gooding, Jr., who plays Simpson in the show, explains that as a “young, black entertainer” he celebrated the acquittal verdict, but filming the show changed his feelings. The old TWoP bullpen is reunited as Pop Culture Happy Hour's own Linda Holmes joins us for a discussion of American Crime Story, Ryan Murphy's dramatization of (this season) the O.J.
