Over the past several years, true crime's hold on the culture has tightened into a vice grip, with new titles flooding podcast charts and streaming platforms on a daily basis. This week on Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz take stock of the phenomenon, first by speaking with fans of the genre to understand its appeal. Then, onstage at the 2024 Cascade PBS Ideas Festival, they continue the discussion with The New Yorker's Patrick Radden Keefe, whose books “Empire of Pain” and “Say Nothing” are exemplars of the form. The panel considers Keefe's recent piece, “The Oligarch's Son,” which illuminates the journalistic challenges of reporting on sordid events—not least the difficulty of managing the emotions and expectations of victims' families. As its appeal has skyrocketed, true crime has come under greater scrutiny. The most successful entries bypass lurid details and shed light on the society in which these transgressions occur. But “the price you have to pay in sociology, in anthropology, in enriching our understanding of something beyond the crime itself—it's fairly high,” Keefe says. “You have to remember that this is a real story about real people. They're alive. Sarah finally caved and watched Ryan Murphy's Jeffrey Dahmer series, the second most-popular show in Netflix history. (Can you guess the first?). It was difficult viewing, if also able to inspire a kind of love for one of Dahmer's victims. As she and Nancy discuss, the reasons to watch/not watch these shows are complicated. Is it possible to humanize victims who met a most inhumane end? Who gets to profit from misery, and what, if anything, do creators of dramatized true crime owe to those whose real lives were forever scarred? Nancy instead watched part of the Dahmer documentary, and she and Sarah compare notes on fictional vs. nonfictional tragedy. Did Alex Jones learn the meaning of “fuck around and find out”? Oh yes he did, and yet does not seem to care that he owes the parents of the children murdered at Sandy Hook nearly $1 billion. In 2011, Brown was cast in the Oprah Winfrey Network comedy series Tyler Perry's For Better or Worse playing the role of Jennifer, Tasha Smith's character best friend.[2] The series ran for six seasons. In 2014, she played the leading role alongside Nia Long, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Zulay Henao and Amy Smart in the comedy-drama film The Single Moms Club. She received positive reviews for her performance,[4][5] then the film has received negative reviews from critics. The following year, she appeared in an supporting role in a comedy film Ted 2.[6][7] In 2016, Brown played the role of juror Jeanette "Queen B" Harris in the FX drama series The People v. O. J. An Emmy winner in 2016 for The People vs O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, and Emmy nominee this year for this role on the massive NBC hit This Is Us, Sterling K. Brown has had quite a year. Last year we were captivated by the excellent FX drama The People vs O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, starring this week’s guest along with Sara Paulson and John Travolta, just to name a few. Brown portrayed prosecutor Christopher Darden with a performance that was complex, nerve wrecking and critically acclaimed by audiences and critics alike. Brown has had a long acting career with success on both stage and television but his role as Randall on This Is Us seems to have propelled him to the next level. His characters’ emotional journey and struggles have had audiences really connecting with the universal themes of family, joy and loss. The show ended the Spring season as the highest rated new network series among adults 18 to 49 with an impressive 12,8 million viewers watching the season 1 finale. This Is Us returns to NBC for its second season on September 26th with guest appearances by Sylvester Stallone, Dan Lauria and Debra Jo Rupp. Not to be missed! Una revisión a la más reciente entrega del reboot de Star Trek, con spoilers incluídos. elmaildepada@dixo.com @eseauto La nueva, hasta ahorita trilogía, de Star Trek es una saga a la cual no le estamos dando la importancia que merece. Está formada por tres películas muy completas, con un elenco que debería estar ya considerado como uno de los mejores ensamblados de los últimos tiempos. Es tan sólida, que la más reciente entrega, Beyond, no extraña para nada al director de las anteriores, J.J. Abrams, ni el guión del dueto maravilla formado por los escritores Kurtzman y Orci. (Aunque es cierto que el primero y el tercero no estuvieron del todo alejados del proyecto, pero ustedes entienden lo que quiero decir) En un verano en el cual, a excepción de CA:Civil War, hasta Pixar falló en volarnos la cabeza, al estrenarse Star Trek Sin Límites en México meses después de su exhibición en Estados Unidos y el resto del mundo, esta es la cinta que debería quitarnos el mal sabor de boca de la no-tan-mala-pero-rescatable Ghostbusters y la decepcionante Suicide Squad. Sin embargo, quizás precisamente por ésta situación, mucha gente dejará pasarla en la pantalla grande para desintoxicarse por unas semanas de las cintas de acción/franquicias/secuelas/reboots. Si usted lector tiene ese sentimiento, entonces no se equivoque y vaya a ver Star Trek Beyond. Se puede ahorrar el 3D más no el formato IMAX, para ver cómo se derrumba la icónica Entrerprise y nuestros héroes se encuentran varados en un planeta con creaturas extrañas. Es tan Star Trek. Por si fuera poco, Sin Límites es una cinta que puede apreciarse como una entrega autocontenida, donde no se necesita ni ser experto en el idioma klingon ni haber visto las dos películas anteriores...a menos que no quieran perderse las referencias al “viejo” universo de Star Trek que de manera tan sencilla, directa y sin complicaciones de más, nos explican en la primera cinta de ésta nueva versión. Aún si ésto ocurriera, sólo no entenderías una secuencia de no más de un minuto. Así como no puedo evitar sentir comezón, inquietud y un sentimiento de que lo estoy haciendo mal cuando me aventuro a ver una película secuela sin haber visto los capítulos anteriores (por ello insisto en la recomendación de ver Star Trek y Star Trek Into Darkness sólo si se quiere tener la experiencia completa) tampoco pude evitar sentir comezón e inquietud en la secuencia que provoca que Beyond no sea una cinta perfecta. Durante años, la solución ante una amenaza que involucra a miles de seres, por lo general robóticos, que claramente superan en número a nuestros héroes, ha sido la misma: córtales la señal que los controla, y entonces se desplomarán para convertirse en chatarra extraterrestre. Eso fue suficiente para pensar “¡Qué predecible”, pero si a eso le sumamos que la herramienta fue la canción “Sabotage” de los Beastie Boys, entonces me da la impresión que los guionistas resolvieron ésta escena en una etapa donde la creatividad no estaba fluyendo del todo. No tengo problema en haber escuchado “Sabotage” de fondo en la primera película de ésta nueva saga. Si tengo problema cuando se usa como herramienta. Siendo una canción que hemos escuchado en cientos de comerciales, videojuegos, películas y series de televisión ( Fighting Talk, A Kinght´s Tale, Futurama, How I meet your mother, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, My Name is Earl y muchos ejemplos más). Yo quisiera pedirle a cualquier curador musical que por favor dejen descansar Sabotage, Back in black, Stayin´Alive, Walking on Sunshine, Bad to the Bone, Sweet Home Alabama, Kung Fu Fighting, Born to be Wild y Low Rider para ilustar sus escenas. Echenle más ganitas. Además, escuchar una canción “real” en el universo por excelencia de la ciencia ficción, me saca de la fantasía. Fuera de ésto, Star Trek está más vivo que nunca, goza de una excelente salud, y aún con una cuarta cinta confirmada, me parece poco. Sí, hay reboots que sí funcionan, y quizás de no ser por éste, seguiría alejado del universo de Kirk y compañía por no encontrar el punto exacto en el cual brincar. Para mi, esto apenas va comenzando, y quiero que Star Trek viva más allá de lo que llevamos. Actress, writer and director Keesha Sharp shines in her current role as Dale Cochran, the wife of defense attorney Johnnie Cochran (Courtney B. Vance), in FX’s “The People vs. O.J. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Angel Parker  From  "The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story".   The show is the first installment of the new limited series from prolific producer Ryan Murphy, and features an all-star cast (Cuba Gooding Jr., John Travolta, David Schwimmer, Sarah Paulson and Courtney B. Vance) to portray the key figures in the infamous O.J.
