Pakula deserves more attention and respect as one of the grestest American film directors of any era.  His run of films in the 70's, from 'Klute' to 'The Parallax View' to 'All The President's Men'...all brilliantly shot by Cinematographer Gordon Willis (The Godfather films)...are as impressive and of their moment as any films made in this thrilling period of American filmmaking. In this episode, I dive into Pakula's understated persona and genius for working with actors, the period details and psychological explorations that result in a layered, non-showy film that rewards repeat viewings.  

This month we're spurning classic Noirvember fare for a month devoted to its stressed spawn: the investigative paranoia thriller! We're starting with the middle chapter of Alan J Pakula's paranoia trilogy: THE PARALLAX VIEW from 1974!Parallax is the least celebrated of Pakula's paranoia trilogy films, but we here on the pod love it: its (unfortunately) timely themes, how it feels about corporations, and its absolutely wild visual presentation. After a rest and a surprise visit from the Rona, we're back with a slightly different format for a look at Alan J. Pakula (1928-1998) and his Paranoia Trilogy. This trio of classic 70s films includes Klute, a murder mystery and character study carried by an incredible performance from Jane Fonda, the slow-burning conspiracy thriller The Parallax View, and All the President's Men, which dramatized two journalists' efforts to uncover the machinations behind the Watergate Scandal. Thanks to riveting performances, voyeuristic cinematography from Gordon Willis, and eerie scores, these films still hold up as singular depictions of paranoia, intricate yet nebulous criminal conspiracies, and mistrust of American political administrations. NOTE: A few of the clips used in this episode came from an interview Pakula gave in 1974. The audio quality of this interview is serviceable, but not ideal. In the 1970s, theories abounded when it came to the question of the 1963 Kennedy assassination. It probably wasn't the beginning of the Conspiracy Theory Crowd, but things certainly accelerated from there. And of course some of this stuff boiled over into Hollywood, which made a few films that touched on the events of November 22, 1963, often in the form of thinly-veiled stories. In this episode we're looking at two of them: 1974's The Parallax View, directed by Alan J. Pakula, and Winter Kills, from 1979 (or thereabouts, you'll just have to listen in to find out why it's not more specific), written and directed by William Richert. Victorian Racing Minister Martin Pakula is the first ever guest on The Spring Racing Breakfast and he talked to Cam Luke and Simon O'Donnell about crowds returning to Flemington for Melbourne Cup Day, and also the potential of Sydney jockeys coming to Melbourne for the Cox Plate.

Today on the Ellroy Boys, we're discussing a couple of films concerned with assassins, their networks and men who attempting to stop them. One, is a lean home invasion flick starring Frank Sinatra & Sterling Hayden, Suddenly, the other is The Parallax View, a film Alex Cox called the “greatest JFK conspiracy film of the all”. Whether or not you agree with said statement, Pakula's labyrinthine thriller, gorgeously photographed by Gordon Willis, is entertaining and wonderfully well put together. We discuss our favorite moments from each film and naturally, further extrapolate on how and why these movies are tied to themes so explicitly examined by our favorite writer.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about filmmakers! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today, Dan and Conor bring in the big guns(One Heat Minute Productions creator Blake Howard) to discuss one of the great filmmakers: Alan J. Pakula. After making a name for himself as a producer (he earned an Oscar nomination for To Kill a Mockingbird), Pakula emerged as a seminal New Hollywood director with his “paranoia trilogy:” Klute (1971), The Parallax View (1974), and All the President's Men (1976). And yet, he is rarely acknowledged in the upper-echelon of great 70s filmmakers like Coppola or De Palma. On this episode we focus on Pakula's underseen, unassuming western Comes a Horseman, his over-cooked domestic thriller Consenting Adults, and his final film The Devil's Own, which stars Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt. Conor, Blake and Dan also take worthwhile detours to discuss Presumed Innocent and The Pelican Brief. This is a wide-ranging talk, thanks in large part to our guest's deep wealth of knowledge on the subject. Topics include Brad Pitt's accent in The Devil's Own and that it's pretty good actually (!), what exactly auteur theory means (both Andrew Sarris and Pauline Kael come up, of course), how there are no consenting adults in Consenting Adults, and what we've lost from the blockbusters of eras past.
