Joining are Melissa Lekan from my firm – The J. Stein Law Firm, Erin Harris from The Law Offices of Andrew Goldner, LLC and Melissa Hands and Shannon Redd from Steelhorse Law. We discuss the characteristics to look for in a successful paralegal, the paralegals role in a law firm and how paralegals can train attorneys to get better outcomes for their clients and run cases in a smooth and efficient way. We discuss the paralegals role in marketing and the crazy Tic Toc law firm videos that are popping up everywhere. We swap funny and interesting stories from their collective 50+ years of experience and get insight into what is most important in a corporate culture that incentives employees to do well and stay for a long time. If you work in a law firm this is such a great discussion to pick up tips on what has made these ladies (and their firms) so successful. If don't work in a law firm, you will still find the management principles very helpful and applicable to your workplace. Finally, we even invited Andy Goldner and Brian Caron back on the show at the end to give their perspective on how they set up their firms and their relationships with their paralegals. Andy and Brian were guests on Episode 2 so we thought it appropriate to have their paralegals join to fact check what we learned from them on running their firms. Today we’re revisiting an interview where Matt spoke with two entrepreneurs from Nashville, Tennessee. Sashank Purighalla is the CEO of BOS Framework, a product framework that helps developers get an MVP to market quickly. Andrew Goldner is an entrepreneur, venture capitalist and founder of GrowthX, an investment firm that helps organizations commercialize innovation through capital, talent and know-how. Both Sashank and Andrew have a lot to say about building an awesome minimum viable product (MVP). Launching a tech product can be a very rocky road for a startup. Technical issues are common, and user feedback during the early days of rollout is often focused around bugs and glitches rather than the product’s core features. This makes it difficult for teams to hone in on what’s working and what isn’t, which can delay the process of reaching product-market fit. And this all wastes a startup’s most valuable resource: time. For these reasons, our guests on today’s episode of the Igniting Statups podcast believe the traditional process for developing a minimum viable product (MVP) is broken. The first is Andrew Goldner, an entrepreneur, venture capitalist and founder of GrowthX, an investment firm that helps organizations commercialize innovation through capital, talent and know-how. Joining him is Sashank Purighalla, CEO of BOS Framework, which provides a pre-built suite of APIs, plugins and UI components for startups that are building software applications. According to Andrew and Sashank, the MVP process shouldn’t just be about building software—it should be about evaluating the market and creating a product that solves a real need. By leveraging in-depth research and tools that jump-start technical development, startup teams can discover what their market needs and spend their valuable resources building that solution. That means reaching product-market fit, revenue and profitability sooner, which could make the difference between startup growth and startup death. In this episode with Andrew Goldner and Sashank Purighalla, you’ll learn: Why a successful product has to do more than sound interesting. Reasons why venture funding might be the wrong choice for a startup. How GrowthX is fueling venture capital growth outside Silicon Valley. The big problem with the traditional MVP process. The benefit of market acceleration programs for discovering market truth. How a pre-built tech framework can help companies get to product-market fit. Andrew’s and Sashank’s greatest hopes for entrepreneurship in middle America. Please enjoy this conversation with Andrew Goldner and Sashank Purighalla!

Sean Sheppard, Sales Influencer and the Founder and CEO of GrowthX, joins me again on this episode. KEY TAKEAWAYS GrowthX is a Silicon Valley venture capital partnership with an accelerator focused on sales and an academy that trains people in sales, marketing, design thinking, and data science and aims at developing markets. Sean describes the ‘lasting-mover advantage’ for companies that own the customer use case. Sean reminds his clients to go slow so they can go fast later. Look first for the customer profile of ‘Mr. Right Now.’ The first into a market is not the last in the market. Apple was not the first GUI; Google was not the first search engine. Sean gives examples. The first company to the market can rarely sustain its position. Sean teaches three keys to build a lasting-mover advantage. The first is to own the use case by earning it through value. The use case is changing at a faster rate than ever. Andy Grove wrote that only the paranoid survive and that we constantly have to be staying out in front of everyone and everything. Sean’s partner, Andrew Goldner, asks people where their focus is. The second key to build a lasting-mover advantage is to figure out, once you own the use case for the customer, how do you own their thoughts and actions around it? Think about what you’ll do next based on what you’ve learned from what you did for your customers yesterday. They will guide you to where you need to go. Sales organizations are wholly focused on acquisition — closing the deal. They invest in marketing, sales support, Sales Executives and technology but forget about customer onboarding, adoption, retention, and growth. The third key to lasting-mover advantage is to design an organization around the knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed for learning, defining, solving for, and owning the use case as it evolves, with the proper roles in place. Who drives the functional data-driven learning loop? Sean suggests it is not an individual contributor but a person with market development responsibility and with certain skills and knowledge — the commercialization leader. ‘Stage relevance’ refers both to the product within the market, and to the qualities of the person that proactively develops and maintains the evolving use case. Andy says you have to keep learning and developing to be prepared. Sean reads biographies, histories, self-help and personal development books — no fiction. Always have a mindset to learn, grow, and do better. Your life will start to change positively. Turn off the TV and read. On yesterday’s episode of Mission Daily, we introduced you to Andrew Goldner, the co-founder of GrowthX, and we learned about his journey from lawyer to tech entrepreneur.  Today, we have Part 2 of Andrew’s interview, in which he discusses some advice he gave to Mission co-founder, Ian, about being “coin-operated,” and his strategy when it comes to investing in new companies. He believes that investing all comes down to looking at a company’s revenue, the knowledge founders have about their revenue streams, and how reliably they can predict them into the future.  “The reality is that not all revenue is created equally,” Andrew says. He also explains that no company can be built without a strong foundation, and part of that is knowing where you are, where you are not, why you aren’t certain places, and what you need to do to reach your goals. That takes intention, focus and a lot of hard work, but it’s worth it.  Andrew dives into all of that and more, on today’s Mission Daily episode.  — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. Andrew Goldner is the co-founder of GrowthX, and while he had a passion for technology very early on in life, it wasn’t until later in his career that he decided to pursue his first love.  After initially studying law with the idea of going into politics, Andrew was able to use his technical knowledge to his advantage and build a brand for himself in Internet-based law. Eventually, Andrew gave up life at the law firm and, after a quick detour in the restaurant business, he landed in the world of technology.  He initially worked at DoubleClick, helping salespeople and operations close deals with new partners and customers. In doing so, he learned that making deals was all about personal relationships and finding congruity, two lessons he brought with him to GrowthX. “When I was doing deals, I would encourage the salesperson, no, put down the keyboard,” Andrew says. “Put down the phone. Let's get on a plane, and yes, it's going to cost us a little money and time. Let's go and meet those people in their hometowns. Let's get there the night before. Let's take them out to dinner. Let's start building relationships with them, human interactions, because we're going to build up political points from that, so the next day when I am negotiating with the lawyer I can be more casual. I can be more human.” On Part 1 of his interview with Mission Daily, Andrew talks about his journey from law to tech, entrepreneurship and venture capital, and everything he went through in between. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning. Episode Summary Andrew Goldner is the co-founder of GrowthX, a trust-network of innovators and investors. GrowthX is more than just a venture capital fund because it focuses on generating value for others first, before making a pretty penny. Prior to starting GrowthX, Andrew was a global business leader and senior technology consultant. Andrew discusses with John on what makes GrowthX different, as well as why startup founders do not need to move locations to build their vision.   Key Takeaways 01:50 - How did Andrew go from Reuters to becoming a VC?   05:15 - You don't have to move locations to get funded. 08:10 - What is the vision of GrowthX?   09:00 - Unless your customers are in that expensive zip code, why even move there?   11:45 - GrowthX will be featuring the founders' faces on their website instead of their company logos.   14:25 - GrowthX plays for the long term and is more intently focused on building stronger relationships than bigger and better profits.   16:50 - When you first join a startup, it's best to just sit and listen to those around you before acting.   18:55 - What kind of attitude does it take to become a good startup founder?  21:15 - How can startup founders remain focused?   23:25 - Remember, you have a set of priorities and others need to respect that.   24:30 - Don't mistake 'being busy' as 'making progress'.   28:00 - Is the fund you're trying to reach really the right fit for your vision 29:25 - How hard is it really to change someone's behavior? Andrew explains.   32:35 - Visit Growthx.com for more info!   Tweetables Busy doesn't mean you're making progress. Focus on quality of investor meetings, not quantity. Humility is a trait investors seek in founders. Attitude allows you to get off the self-esteem roller coaster.
