Tell us what you think of the show! This Week in Cleantech is a weekly podcast covering the most impactful stories in clean energy and climate in 15 minutes or less featuring Paul Gerke of Factor This and Tigercomm's Mike Casey. This week's "Cleantecher of the Week" is Tom Steyer, Co-Executive Chair of Galvanize. He reminds us that when we talk about climate now, the conversation is about technology, costs, and politics, which is important. However, we cannot lose sight of what this is truly about: passing on a livable planet. Tom reminds us about this after a weekend camping with his grandkids. Don't get zapped! In 3×15, "Galvanize," we meet child murderer William Barrow and, somehow, that's not the most disturbing thing about him. After escaping hospital custody via belly-full-of-flies (don't ask), he ends up on a greatest-hits-tour of Beacon Hills, ending up—where else?—but Beacon Hills High School.Elsewhere, Scott and Stiles decide to make Coach's life a little more interesting during Mischief Night via office dissolution and Allison and Isaac maybe, kinda, sorta let loose a little of their romantic tension. The twins are back and want to join Scott's pack, and no one's sure if it's a good idea. Scott comes to Kira's house for dinner, Mr. Yukimura suggests Kira could date the coyote (we're in favor! Malira 4ever!), and Lydia keeps hearing flies. This episode offers lots of good advice like: don't eat a whole chunk of wasabi at once; don't get kidnapped by a child murderer; and if you need to scream, let it out.xoxo,Fandom on the RocksFind us on the Internet: https://linktr.ee/fandomontherocksSupport the pod: Patreon.com/fandomontherocksCreate your own podcast today with Zencastr and share your story. #madewithZencastr
Bjarne is an SO/SP 8w9 with 3w2 and 6w7 fixes, though in this episode, he questions whether he might be a core Six. What emerges regardless is a portrait of a powerful, self-directed psyche shaped by an early awareness of exploitation, corruption, the failure of collective systems to protect the dignity of life. From political dreams as a child to his drive to awaken others to their own strength, Bjarne speaks about what it means to live with a sense of self-respect and moral propulsion. We talk about betrayal and its lasting scar: how one relational rupture cost him his emotional faith in others, replacing it with vigilance and paranoia. We also explore the engine behind his ambition, his disdain for comfort zones, and the sadness he feels watching others give up on their dreams. Despite his tough exterior, what drives him is a longing to ignite others into action and distribute his own fire so that others might reclaim their agency. This is a conversation about will, self-respect, the cost of vigilance, and the restless drive to feel truly alive. Jim is a dad of three, an avid skier & biker, and a major force in the world of startups, hospitality, tech, and wellness. He's built companies like Ascendant Tech, Galvanize, and now Gravity Haus—a boutique hotel and social club experience built for outdoor lovers & wanders seeking community. We talk about his journey from small-town Illinois to Vail, CO, how he made his first dollar, the lessons he's learned building multiple companies, and why mindfulness is at the core of everything he does. He opens up about fatherhood, building companies with his wife Alicia, success, mental health, and what he's most proud of (spoiler: it's not his businesses). Such a powerful, honest conversation, and I learned SO much from the few hours we spent together. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 8, 2024 is: galvanize GAL-vuh-nyze verb To galvanize people is to cause them to be so excited or concerned about something that they are driven to action. // The council's proposal to close the library has galvanized the town's residents. See the entry > Examples: “The original Earth Day was the product of a new environmental consciousness created by Rachel Carson's 1962 book, Silent Spring, and of public horror in 1969 that the Cuyahoga River in Ohio was so polluted it caught fire. … On April 22, 1970, some 20 million people attended thousands of events across America, and this galvanizing public demand led in short order to the creation, during Richard Nixon's presidency, of the Environmental Protection Agency (1970), the Clean Air Act (1970), the Clean Water Act (1972), and the Endangered Species Act (1973), and much more after that.” — Todd Stern, The Atlantic, 6 Oct. 2024 Did you know? Luigi Galvani was an Italian physician and physicist who, in the 1770s, studied the electrical nature of nerve impulses by applying electrical stimulation to frogs' leg muscles, causing them to contract. Although Galvani's theory that animal tissue contained an innate electrical impulse was disproven, the French word galvanisme came to refer to a current of electricity especially when produced by chemical action, while the verb galvaniser was used for the action of applying such a current (both words were apparently coined by German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, who modeled them after the French equivalents of magnetism and magnetize). In English, these words came to life as galvanism and galvanize, respectively. Today their primary senses are figurative: to galvanize a person or group is to spur them into action as if they've been jolted with electricity.
When Tom Steyer and Katie Hall came together in 2021 to bring Galvanize Climate Solutions to the world, it promised to be something rather unique. They both bring decades of experience managing many billions of dollars, incredible networks, and insights to find the best, most impactful investment opportunities for climate. Recently, Secretary John Kerry joined Galvanize as a Co-Chair, adding perhaps unparalleled international expertise to their team. The firm prioritizes not just financial returns for their investors, but also real climate impact. I was thrilled to sit down with Galvanize Chief Impact Officer Nicole Systrom to learn about how such an all-star team thinks about the impact they create. We spoke about Nicole's background, the three different asset classes Galvanize invests in, three different levels of impact they consider before and after their investments are made, the impact of the election on their work, and much more. I learned a lot and am certainly glad Galvanize is doing the work it's doing. Enjoy. In today's episode, we cover:[02:35] Nicole's background & career focus on climate[06:59] Galvanize & what makes it unique[11:21] Feelings & optimism in climate work[14:36] Galvanize's investment strategy across asset classes[15:59] Impact approaches for public equities, real estate & venture[17:59] Galvanize's thesis & embedding impact across the firm[22:36] Three levels of impact[24:02] Diving deeper into impact approaches for different asset classes[26:11] Galvanize's real estate investment strategy[29:24] Nicole's goals & priorities for the next year[32:42] The impact of the recent election[34:28] What else needs to change in climate finance[36:28] Closing reflections & call to actionResources MentionedGalvanize Climate SolutionsConnect with Nicole SystromConnect with Nicole on LinkedInConnect with Jason RissmanOn LinkedInOn TwitterKeep up with Invested In ClimateSign up for our NewsletterLinkedInInstagramTwitter

By now, you've likely noticed our refreshed look. We're evolving the show to focus on the inevitable impacts of climate change and the groundbreaking solutions shaping our future. To kick off this next chapter our first guest on Inevitable is Tom Steyer, Co-executive Chair at Galvanized Climate Solutions, a multi-strategy investment firm focused exclusively on the climate transition. A little over a year ago, Galvanize announced the final close of its Innovation + Expansion Fund at over $1 billion, one of the largest climate venture funds ever raised. Tom is also the recent author of the New York Times bestselling book, "Cheaper, Faster, Better: How We'll Win the Climate War," and he wrote the Forward to Project Drawdown. In 2020, Tom was a Democratic presidential candidate with a climate-focused policy agenda, and he participated that year on the primary debate stage alongside now President Joe Biden and now VP Kamala Harris, among many other notable Democratic party leaders. He's the founder of NextGen America, the largest youth voter organization in the USA, which he created in 2013. But Tom hasn't always been focused on the energy transition and climate change. In 1986, he founded Farallon Capital Management, a multi-strategy hedge fund that he ran for over 25 years and grew to hundreds of employees and $20 billion in assets under management. His story of having incredible success in one field and then feeling the inevitable pull to work on the biggest problem of our time is exactly the type of pathway that we plan to explore on this show. *We recorded this episode live during Climate Week NYC, in front of a fantastic audience. We'd like to thank them for joining as well as the folks at ethic for lending their beautiful space and JP Morgan for helping to sponsor the event. In this episode, we cover: [4:55] Tom's book theme: "do the obvious thing"[9:58] Tom's book theme: "the status quo will not go on forever"[13:53] Energy is wealth and how we can collectively retire fossil energy with renewables[17:06] Tom's decision to dedicate his career to climate and his early pathway[21:34] NextGen and the org's origins[23:32] Sharpening your bullshit detector[25:03] What prompted Tom's 2020 presidential run[26:05] The catalyst to Galvanize[29:26] The firm's different focus areas and strategy[34:45] Tom's "five plus one" approach to investing[38:01] The model Tom would like O&G companies to take in the transition[40:45] Thoughts on the "climate war"[44:13] What happens when climate tech is no longer a category[46:56] Tom's thoughts on permitting halting clean energy progress[49:59] Rapid fire topics including China and India[53:13] Hyperscalers and AI[55:01] Tom's policy wish list[59:29] His call to action for listenersEpisode recorded on Sept 24, 2024 (Published on Nov 4, 2024) Stay Connected with MCJ:Cody Simms on LinkedIn | Cody Simms on XVisit mcj.vcSubscribe to Our NewsletterEnjoyed this episode? By Adam Turteltaub The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, better known as the OECD, has long played a role in the fight against corruption. It's Convention on Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials in International Business Transactions has led to the proliferation of anti-corruption laws around the globe and encouraged compliance efforts. In this podcast the OECD's Ingrid Hampe (LinkedIn), Lead Policy Analyst, and Santiago Wortman Jofre (LinkedIn), Team Lead – Anti-Corruption and Integrity in State-Owned Enterprises , share information about another initiative of the OECD: Compliance Without Borders. A part of the Global Initiative to Galvanize the Private Sector as Partners to Combatting Corruption, and developed in partnership with the US Department of State, it pairs a compliance professional from the private sector with a relevant professional in a state owned enterprises (SOE) for three to six months. During this time the private sector provides hands-on support to help build structures within the SOE to decrease corruption. The key to success for these partnerships is creating the right match of partners. Each participant fills out a detailed form which captures their expertise or needs. The match is made accordingly, with care to ensure that it is compatible on other levels as well and that there are no potential conflicts of interest. The program is part of a growing wave of collective action efforts designed to create new strategies for stemming corruption. Listen in to learn more about this effort, and be sure to take a look at the Compliance Without Borders Handbook. For further information you can contact: Rita Guelzim at the OECD via email. Hundreds of billions of dollars have already been invested in clean energy projects in America since the Inflation Reduction Act was passed in 2022. With that level of spending, clean energy jobs are on the rise, meaning there's never been a better time to start a career focused on combating the climate crisis. The variety of roles in clean energy jobs means there are plenty of ways you can become a "Climate Person" in your professional life, even if you've been one in your personal life for a while. Being a "Climate Person" also isn't restricted to just careers in clean energy, but also means incorporating climate solutions into whatever it is you do for a living. Tom Steyer, co-founder of Galvanize Climate Solutions, founder of NextGen Climate America, and 2020 Democratic Presidential Primary Candidate joins the show this week to discuss his new book "Cheaper, Faster, Better: How We'll Win the Climate War" and strategies for becoming a "Climate Person" at a time when the world needs more of them than ever. We also talk about how turning politicians, business leaders, and investors into climate people will be critical to the sustainability of human life on our planet.
