However, we spent the bulk of this podcast talking about her experience as a swimmer who through hard work, grit, and dedication earned a scholarship to swim collegiately at Georgia Tech. Swimming has had a profound effect on her life and has installed the values that set her up for success in life.We had a great discussion about youth sports. Natanya talked about how to maximize the youth sports experience for children while making it fun and keeping them competitive. We discuss time management, early mornings in the pool and what it takes to succeed. A former swim coach, Natanya has strong feelings on “burn out” and shares her tips on raising successful athletes. We talked about when she realized that college swimming was a possibility and her recruitment process. Natanya talked about her college experience to include the connections made and how it prepared her for business and her law practice. We talked about the different trips she has taken involving swimming and being in the water. In 2018, Natanya founded Brooks Injury Law to have the opportunity to make a real difference in the life of others. Natanya wanted to bring individuals and families out of despair through recovery and to work with families to honor and comfort those who are not able to recover from their injuries.Natanya has implemented different marketing strategies and has followed the growth. Her goal for Brooks Injury Law was to always be able to help clients in need. As clients began to ask for help in different areas of personal injury law, instead of turning them away, she decided to expand our team. She was always well-equipped to handle road wrecks but as premises cases like negligent security shootings came in, we were able to bring in additional attorneys to handle the complex legal issues and appellate work that comes with those cases. Next, a medical malpractice branch was added to the firm, followed by a products, civil rights, and class action practice area. She has done just that with her firm now employing 9 lawyers and 25+ staff. As always, this episode is powered by the J. Episode 99 of Sports ‘N Torts is a special one! Parag Shah – CEO of Miles Mediation and Arbitration – issued a challenged. If we could raise $10,000 to support Side by Side Clubhouse he would come on the podcast and shave his head live! Well, thanks to all of your generosity we raised over $25,000!! Amazing. The donations came in from two camps: the Snip Squad (those who wanted to shave Parag’s hair) and the Lock Lovers (those who wanted to save Parag’s hair). In the end, both camps raised over $10,000 so we were left with no choice but to take the issue to Judge Hydrick from the Superior Court of Dekalb County for a ruling on who win’s … Judge Hydrick issued an Order in favor of the Snip Squad so Parag’s head was shaved live on the podcast! Chris the Barber put Parag in the chair and gave him a nice clean shave. Parag has been growing his hair since 2019 so this was an epic and emotional event. My 2004 UGA Law School Classmate Erica Parson and her husband, Mark Stewart, join the podcast in a hilarious, information and feel good episode. We sampled some Old Fashions and had a great time. Raised in Montgomery, AL, Erica spent her undergraduate years at Auburn University studying English and French. She worked in the South of France at the Festival d’Avignon for a summer and once she came to terms with the fact that she likely would not achieve her lifelong dream of becoming Queen of England, she decided to take her talents for zealous advocacy to the University of Georgia School of Law. She was so devoted to UGA’s advocacy program that Erica (and her husband Mark) have the unique honor of being the only couple to ever be married in the Hatton-Lovejoy Courtroom at the law school. After graduating from UGA, Erica began her practice in coastal Alabama, but relocated to Atlanta where she spent nearly two decades in Atlanta focusing her practice on general liability and automobile insurance defense, bad faith and coverage litigation with several major defense firms in the city. She is licensed to practice in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee and has successfully litigated cases in both state and federal courts at the trial and appellate levels. In 2020, Erica and her husband relocated to Rabun County, where she worked remotely and began to reimagine her career. Inspired by the work he had done over the years, Erica reached out to Arman about embarking on a new chapter together. With two decades of litigation experience, Erica has developed a uniquely measured approach to the practice of law that centers on compassion, understanding, and integrity with a healthy dose of good humor and a touch of irreverence. Erica lives by the wise wisdom of Roadhouse’s James Dalton: ‘All you have to do is follow three simple rules. One, never underestimate your opponent. Expect the unexpected. Two, take it outside. Never start anything inside the bar unless it’s absolutely necessary. And three, be nice. . . until it’s time to not be nice.’” Erica recently moved to Auburn, Alabama with her husband Mark and three dogs Waylon, Jesse and Hank so they could all be closer to family. She set up shop in the Columbus office and, in addition to her Georgia cases, is handling the firm’s Alabama and Tennessee cases, usually with Waylon and/or Jesse in the office with her.
James Robson from the Atlanta law firm of Glass Robson joins this weeks podcast in another great episode. James and his partner, Robert Glass, met in Law School and 10 years ago started their own personal injury firm. James has a diverse background working for one of the largest defense firms in the state and also two of the most successful Plaintiffs lawyers in the state. James talks about how these prior experiences shaped the lawyer he is, the law firm he has created and the way he approaches his case. By way of an example, James recently secured a $4M+ jury verdict. We talk all about this car wreck case and get into the weeds of the trial. James talks about his preparation, strategy and the arguments that resonated with the jury. We talk about what makes a case go to trial and how to prepare clients for the experience. We talk about the appeal process and what it means when a case “is appealed” after a big verdict. Outside of the office James is an adventurous guy. Always looking for his next challenge, James has completed 4 marathons and has now turned his attention to mountain climbing. And not the “hiking” version but the mountaineering version with handholds, footholds and all the things. James just returned from the Grand Tetons and he tells us the itinerary and the process to reach the summit up 13,000 feet. And don’t forget to check out our March 5, 2024 event at Side By Side Charity. We are actively raising money to shave Parag Shah’s head. 3a Law Management – founded by Alvaro Arauz – is a leading resource for helping lawyers start a Law Firm, run a Law Firm, market a Law Firm, and manage a Law Firm. If you are a lawyer/law firm owner or partner or want to start your own law firm, this is the podcast for you. Alvaro has been working for law firms around the country (and internationally) for over 25 years. He shares his time tested tips that have helped countless lawyers realize the firms of their dreams. We go over his four truth and he explains what they all mean and why they are important: 1. A brilliant attorney doesn't always equate to an accomplished business owner. 2. The success of a firm depends not just on your skill in the courtroom or conference room, but on your leadership skills and ability to comply with the rules of the game. Compliance mistakes are some of the most costly and destructive for any law practice.3. Some of the most skilled lawyers find difficulty in running their offices efficiently. Inefficiency is the root of failure. 4. 3a. law management helps attorneys translate their innate advocacy into a successful practice. We help lawyers identify and eliminate their weaknesses and create purposeful and effective new habits. A native of Atlanta (and my old next door neighbor), Steven has built and designed his law firm to carry out his vision of how a small business should operate. Sameer Ahuja is a successful businessman, entrepreneur and the President at GameChanger and we are so appreciative of him sharing his time with us. For those of you with kids or grandkids active in youth sports you KNOW GameChanger and you USE it regularly. Sameer is a great guy and I had a blast talking to him about the great work him and his team are doing.Let me start by saying I have a 12 y/o son who is very involved in youth baseball and whose games we have been following on GC for as long as I can remember. On top of that, I have been one of the parents on our teams who runs GC during the games and scores the games. To say I am familiar with, and fond of, the app is an understatement. So this was a big treat for me.Sameer tells us about the history of GC including its beginnings with the founders back in 2009. We talk about GC being acquired by Dicks Sporting Goods and its trajectory over the last 5 years with him as President. GC has now scored 40,000,000 games and has been used by 1,000,000 teams. GC highlights are now featured on MLB Network and MLB.com. Sameer shares the guiding principles of the company and how they view their role within youth sports and within families. Sameer tells the story of how the video feature and the highlight clip functions were born. He relieves the 'bet the company' decisions he made during Covid. Above all, Sameer considers GC a “happiness company”.We talk about constant updates to GC and what may be coming around the corner. We talk about the simplicity of the app, suggestions he gets from users, the random places he hears of people watching GC, the perfect streaming set up and of course the bickering by parents over whether a batted ball was a hit or an error.Sameer is a great follow on LinkedIn and you can find him at “Sameer Ahuja”Thanks for listening and if you enjoyed this episode please tell a friend and leave us a 5 star review. Dr. Jack Llewellyn joins Sports ‘N Torts this week for a super informative and entertaining episode. Dr. Jack is a sports psychologist who was the first psychologist to bring his skills and approach to professional athletes – specifically baseball players. Dr. Jack got his start in Major League Baseball after a former student of his invited him to work with the Expos. This allowed Dr. Jack to work with professional athletes on the mental side of the game to complement their physical skills. Ultimately, Dr. Jack was asked by Bobby Cox and the Atlanta Braves to help (at that time) a young pitcher named John Smoltz who was struggling. Working with Dr. Jack jump started Smoltz's career and his continued work with the team helped them on an unprecedented run of success. Dr. Jack tells us all about that experience working with the Braves and other MLB players including Chuck Knoblauch and Paul O'Neil. Dr. Jack's true passion, and current passion, is helping young athletes. As a father of two young athletes, I was specifically interested in what he had to say about the right way to raise children to find success and happiness in sports. Dr. Jack was not short on answers on everything related to how our children can get the most out of their youth sports career and how we should be talking to them during, before and after games. If you are a parent with young children who enjoy sports this is a must listen for you. We talk about proper goal setting and why it is important to lets kids be kids. Dr. Jack is an author of multiple books and a frequent speaker to Fortune 500 Corporations. He talks about how his mental approach system applies to the corporate world as well. Finally, Dr. Jack gives me some tools to overcome those first tee jitters on the golf course and how to better approach 3 foot putts. If you are an athlete, parent of an athlete, like sports, have a job or just want to strengthen your mental approach in life …. This podcast is right for you. You can find out more on Dr. Jack at https://www.allamericanspeakers.com/celebritytalentbios/Jack+Llewellyn/4463 and a simple google search will bring up his books.
